The project was located on the banks of the Tombigbee river in Leroy, Alabama in the Charles r. Lowman Power Plant. The “Pinning System Project” consisted of one hundred 54-inch diameter cased drill shafts, averaging 112 feet in length. The drilled shafts were installed to stop the slope failure occurring at the banks of the Tombigbee river. beCK (in conjunction with Jordan Pile Driving of mobile, Alabama) designed and installed a system of trestle work bridges and long reach drilling equipment to construct the pinning shafts in the required location. This

was accomplished without applying any construction loads to the existing river bank. each drill shaft had an average of eighty feet of casing installed down to an underlying limestone stratum, and then a drilled penetration into the limestone another twenty feet. inclinometer casings and strain gauges were strategically placed in ten of the one hundred shafts to monitor the movement of the slope as new air quality control additions to the plant were constructed. enGineer: black & Veatch

The interstate 10 / uS 59 interchange near downtown Houston was touted as one of the busiest highway intersections in the state. Widening uS 59 at this intersection was no easy task for TxDoT, due to the cities’ growth surrounding the interchange. The design called for large diameter deep foundations (to support single columns) in very tight locations. beCK was the successful bidder due to their

experience and highly productive equipment for installing large diameter shafts with the high water table and soft coastal soils found at the site. beCK manufactured a 500 horse power drill attachment, mounted on a 165-ton crane, to install the 108” diameter shafts with depths of 140’ deep in these tight areas.enGineer: Texas Department of Transportation

The super conducting super collider was a Department of energy project to build a giant underground atom smasher. To accomplish this, they had to construct a 30 foot diameter underground tunnel 64 miles long. The tunnel was shaped like an oval and would house large electromagnetic race track that would control the atoms. beCK was contracted to install access, alignment and vent shafts

to facilitate the tunnel excavation. These access shafts varied from 18 to 30 feet in diameter to depths of 285 feet. beCK developed a system of installing a series of secant piles to stabilize the upper soft soils and high torque drilling equipment to excavate the lower shales.

During construction of a 5 mile elevated section of the Leroy Selmon Crosstown expressway, it was discovered that the installed drilled shaft foundations had insufficient capacity to carry construction loads. This deficiency was not discovered until approximately half of the segmental bridge was constructed and a failure occurred at the leading edge of construction. A geotechnical investigation determined 27 of the constructed bents needed remediation. 2-48” diameter sister shafts with depths of up to 90’ where installed at each deficient bent. The sister shafts had to be installed under the existing bridge, with as little as 18’ clearance, and in the 45’ median between the existing grade lanes of the toll road. beCK’s

limited access drilling capabilities were required to complete the remediation foundations. Temporary casings were installed down to limestone, and drilling fluid was used to stabilize the remainder of the excavation. A casing oscillator designed by beCK was used to advance the casing, and a low clearance drill rig designed and manufactured by beCK was used to excavate the foundations. After the excavation, the shafts where cleaned and SiD tested. The reinforcing cages and CSL tubes had to be spliced over the excavation and set in concrete with a pump, also designed and built by beCK.

This section of the new Carolina bays Parkway in myrtle beach, South Carolina crosses over SC 544. A. H. beck Foundation Co., inc. and Applied Foundation Testing offered an alternate foundation design utilizing beCK’s patented post grouting process, “Post Stressed Pier” uS Patent no. 6,371,698. The Post Grouted Shafts were implemented as a value added alternate to conventional drilled shafts. The use of the Post Grouted Shafts resulted in a

savings of up to 25 feet per shaft. The final design called for 10 - 54” diameter shafts 66 feet in depth. The first production shaft was instrumented and a full scale load test was run using AFT’s 2000 ton Statnamic testing device for design verification and to establish the grouting criteria.

This project consisted of installing 4 wells to house sump pumps that collect condensate from steam powered generator turbines. These wells were installed inside an existing power generation facility with a 5 foot thick reinforced concrete slab. This section of the facility was constructed below sea level so the 5’ concrete slab was the only thing keeping the plant from flooding. beCK designed a method to create an artificial water head at each sump location so the 5’ thick

slab could be penetrated and the sumps could be excavated down to -40.0 in elevation. once the sumps were excavated a pump casing had to be installed and concreted into place. Limited access drilling equipment and all materials had to be flown in with an overhead crane to reach the locations inside the building to prevent flooding of the facility basement.

The project consists of 1100 drilled shafts from 48 inches to 72 inches in diameter and 50 feet deep, for a 4.4 miles long pipe rack connecting the new facilities of “Petroleos de Venezuela” (PDVSA) Cardon refinery in Venezuela. The work was carried out through a variety of soil conditions, from very soft soil to very hard-abrasive coquina. The 72 inch diameter drilled shafts were required to install several vertical oil pumps throughout the refinery. beCK

teamed up with a local contractor who provided local labor, support equipment and materials for the project and completed the original scope in six (6) months. Additional scope was added to beCK’s contract as a result of the speed of construction, having a final scope with over 2,500 drilled shafts completed in only nine (9) months. enGineer: m. W. Kellogg

This section of the scenic natchez Trace Parkway in natchez mississippi crosses Catherine’s Creek and melvin’s bayou. An elevated bridge structure 1720 feet in length was designed to span both streams. The design also had to assume that the future convergence of these two streams would be under the bridge, so up to 60 feet of scour in some areas, had to be factored into the foundation design. Due to this large depth of scour, the original foundation design consisted of clusters of H piles along with drilled shafts, which resulted in a very expensive design. A. H. beck Foundation Co., inc.

and Applied Foundation Testing offered an alternate foundation design utilizing beCK’s patented post grouting process, “Post Stressed Pier” uS Patent no. 6,371,698, which significantly reduced the depths of the drilled shafts to the minimum tip elevation for lateral design limits and helped to bring the project back into budget. The final design called for the installation of 26 post grouted shafts 72” in diameter ranging from 75 to 100 feet deep. one full scale test shaft was also installed and tested using AFT’s 2000 ton Statnamic testing device.enGineer: Wilbur Smith and Associates

To widen and deepen the flood channel, new soldier pier retaining walls were constructed to protect the existing bridge abutments. A total of 67-50” diameter soldier piers 50’-0” deep were constructed under 13’-0” of overhead clearance. each soldier pier had 24-#18 vertical full length reinforcing bars that had to be spliced together in sections as each went into the shaft. To protect the existing abutment, full length temporary segmental casing was osculated in place as the shafts were constructed.

on many occasions the existing piling had to be cut out of the new shafts using cutting teeth on the bottom of the segmental casing. All of the channel wall work was constructed inside a levee at an elevation of –4 below sea level with the river running at elevation +1 on the other side of the levee. Phase ii of the project consists of installing 20 new shafts to support the existing bridge bents after the channel is deepened. These 50” diameter shafts ranged in depth from 70 to 90’-0” deep.

Project consisted of two 12 foot diameter drilled shafts 130 feet deep. While the majority of the structures were constructed with a pile cluster/footing foundation, two piers required single large diameter drilled shafts due to the limited width of the construction zone and to eliminate the differential settlement of the embankment. beCK worked with Dorsett brothers Concrete Supply, Doran Steel, TnT Crane & rigging, and PumpCo to manufacture a 12’ diameter auger, mix 3000 bbl of bentonite mineral slurry, set 12’ diameter x 20’ long permanent casing and excavate the 12’

diameter x 130’ deep slurry displaced drilled shaft. Steel plate templates were furnished to facilitate the tying and placing of a 75,000 lb reinforcing cage with 40 #18 bars. A 7 sk concrete was designed with admixtures to maintain a minimum 4” slump for the duration of the pour. 625 CY was batched, delivered, and placed in less than 4 hours with the use of two articulated boom pumps pumping into two 12” tremie pipes.

ProbLem: installing high capacity foundations in between existing structures over water

SoLuTion: beCK designed long reach drilling equipment in order to reach a large cluster of drill shafts

This project consisted of 97 drilled shaft foundations 60 inches in diameter, between 90 and 120 feet in depth. Phase i of the project had to be constructed in between the two existing iH 10 bridges, leaving a working width of only eighty feet (80’). The scope of work also included an osterberg cell load test for design verification.

Due to the footing for the new bridge foundations (consisting of clusters of 12-60” diameter shafts) and the narrow working width between the bridges, beCK used long reach drill attachments they had fabricated to be able to reach across the footings and construct each one from only one side.

The job consisted of drilling 74 drill shafts behind an existing damaged historical wall. The fortifications of old San Juan represent a highly significant cultural and historic landmark to Puerto rico. The national Park Service is charged with the preservation and maintenance of this historical landmark. The nPS issued a permit to Pr DToP to reinforce the damaged wall, which would later be reconstructed in the same manner it was originally constructed more than 300 years ago.

beCK designed and installed 74 – 36” diameter shafts close to 80’ deep soldier piers to support and protect the existing historical wall. beCK also had to rebuild the existing sidewalk and street above the wall after the soldier pier construction was complete. Due to the historical nature of this repair several agencies were involved: Pr Historic Conservation office, nPS, Pr DToP, Autoridad de Carreteras, and the San Juan mayors office, along with personnel from the Governor’s office.enGineer: Autoridad de Carreteras
