This is my first President'sColumn, and 1 have to say it is veryexciting. (Now Katy has to call meand remind me about the newsletter, and I can't pass the work on to Ed.)

So much has happened since the lastn e w s l e t t e r .

The NYC Marathon is history, with over 60 Taconicscovering the 26.2 mile course. Congrat-ulalions to everyone whoran the distance, and especially the first time marathoners. BarbaraBrittan and Barbara Kingsborough deserve congratulations from allof us for "jobs well done" for completing the marathon, AND forraising a combined total of over $15,000 for the Cancer andLeukemia Societies, The Mayflower Hotel was the site for ourpost race party for the usual accomp-lished marathoners and greatsupport team. Thanks to Pete Corsino, Susan Poet, Susan Solowand Fred Reger for getting into the City with all the party goods.Speaking of transporting to the City... Thanks go to EdMcLaughlin for getting all of us to the start!

The T aconic Dinner Dance on November 8 was a hugesuccess thanks to Chris and Fred Reger. The midnight hour camemuch too soon for most of us, but Taconics once again proved thatthey know how to dance and party.

The Great Taconic Lost Weekend was tons of fun for allthe kids and parents who were surprised by Santa's new look at theFriday night kids' party.

In the Cross Country Relay the following morning, we hadone runner blaze his own trial through Blue Mountain Reservation. As a result, his team, the Ossining Police Department, have lots oftales to tell regarding the "Lost Patrolman of Mt. Spitzenberg".The efforts of our race director, Pete Meisler, and his team of"Trail Blazers" deserve big thanks for a great job on the new trailroute made necessary by the heavy rains and high water level of thestreams we usually crossed. Saturday night we had our HolidayParty and despite the bad weather, we celebrated the HolidaySeason in style. Lots of food, music and good cheer.

Sunday's Couples Relay had a most exciting finish.Newlyweds Scott Abercrombie and Debby Kenny managed to holdoff an incredible effort by Dr. Greg Diamond and his bride NancyYoung (to steal a line from Jack Bums) to win first place and firstchoice of the wide variety of merchandise awards. Another fine jobby race director, Steve Calidonna. Congratulations to all thefin ishers .

Thanks also go to all the people who stayed on Sunday tohelp clean up. I have to mention these members because this is thetoughest job and one that few want to do. Thanks to SteveCalidonna, Billy Foley, Greta Olsson, Kathleen D'Ottavio, JackMagrone, Tom Church, Nancy Young, Greg Diamond, ChrisTippen, Carol Hansen, Myles O'Rhodes, Scott Abercrombie, andDebby Kenny.

See you all at the Freezer 5's in Febmary. If anyone hasany suggestions or ideas, or wants to volunteer to help at anyTaconic events, please call me and let me know. I wish you all awonderful new year and better times and injury-free miles ahead.

MAC Maligned -Taconic Apologizes -Mea CulpaBy Ed McLaughlin

In the November issue of Taconic Rurming Life, anarticle appeared which castigated the Metropolitan AthleticsCongress (MAC) for some perceived shortcomings. Thiswas precipitated by events surrounding Taconic RoadRunners Club being informed that our club dues had notbeen received by MAC, hence our club was not eligible tocompete in the MAC Championship series. This wouldcertainly have been very unfortunate for our Men's MatersTeam, which has a cormnanding lead in the team scoring.

Certain facts need to be clarified about this situation. As 1996 President of Taconic Road Runners Club, Itake full responsibility for the failure to follow-up with ourMAC renewal. This was the sole reason for the problem. The folks at MAC did nothing wrong with regard to ourrenewal. The article misplaced blame for this at MAC'sdoor, when, in fact, we were living in a glass house andthrowing stones.

The very good news is that through the good gracesof Rick Pascarella, former President of MAC, and PhilGreenwald, a director at MAC, MAC has seen fit to recognize the unique circumstances of our case and to retroactively reinstate Taconic. For this we thank MAC wholeheartedly.

Not only did the article misplace blame forTaconic's dilemma on MAC, it also contained a number offactual errors. MAC has assured me that it has no ax to

grind with regard to preferring any club or Long Island as asite for its races. Much of the reason why the races are onLong Island is because the race directors of those races havecontacted MAC and have offered up their races to beincluded on MAC's schedule, both as "regular" races and asChampionship races. If we don't like going to Long Island, our recourse is to solicit MAC to put a Taconic race on theschedule.

With regard to Dan O'Brien's lost world record atRandall's Island, MAC was not responsible for the windgauge. That was the responsibility of the watch company incharge of the automatic timing.

The lesson to be learned from this is that we need tobe more circumspect in our criticisms. If we intend to do alittle tongue-in-cheek, good natured fun-poking at otherswithin the running community, we need to be sure that ourgood-spirited intent is clear, and that our words are notsusceptible to misinterpretation. Certainly, in this caseMAC didn't deserve the bad rap, and for that, I apologize onb e h a l f o f T R R C .

Ta c o n i c Te a m sTake To The CityBy Lee Saroken

The first three team races for 1997 in theNYRRC Club Championship Series have been set. InJanuary, it is the Northwind lOK on the 19th; on February 22, the Snowflake 4 Miler is the designated event;and the Brooklyn Half Marathon on the streets of Brooklyn on Saturday, March 8th completes the first quarter ofthe series.

HELLO OUT THERE: the Men's Open TeamNEEDS a captain. The job is basically one of coordinating the team (making phone calls) to ensure that TRRCfields a complete (and, with luck, a competitive) team offive sub-40-year-olds per race. Interested parties, pleasecall Lee at 244-8544. No resume need be sent.

Taconic has had to rely heavily on Masters andVeterans runners to score in the Open division. Thisshouldn't be the case. We have some VERY good Opendivision runners who need nothing more than a bit oforganizing and team-focused motivation to put them inthe upper echelons of the Club competition.

The defending champion 1st place Men's Masters Team (age 40+) will again be organized by ScottAbercrombie. Scott can be reached at 245-9629. Pleasecall if you are interested in participating.

The defending champion 1st place Men's Veterans Team (age 50+) will have Rich Nash at the helm.Cal l 248-6666.

The Women's Open Team, the Women's MastersTeam (age 40+) and newly scoring Women's VeteransTeam (50+) will be captained by Joan Deitrick, DebbyKenney (245-9629), and Lee Saroken (244-8544),respectively. Just to emphasize a point: in 1997,Women's Veterans (age 50+) will be scored separatelyfor purposes of the NYRRC Club Team Championship. This is a "golden" opportunity for Taconic's "GoldenGirls" to go for it as a TEAM. Please keep in mind that(to this point) none of the first three races conflict withany TRRC races, so if you can run, please give the teamcaptains a call.

Although these events are "competitive" againstother running clubs, please don't be dissuaded fromparticipating if you are a mid-too-back-of-the-packrunner. Taconic has often had to count on people tocome through in the clutches to help an overall teameffort, so everyone who shows, COUNTS.

Also, car-pooling to the NYC races has provento be not only a painless way to go, but also great fiin initself. As Jack Brenn£m keeps saying, "Life's a journey, enjoy the trip." (Jack frequently makes the trip to NYCwith the Men's Veterans Team.)

M Y M A R AT H O N E X P E R I E N C EBy Barbara Kingsborough

The Verazzano stretched before us, curving with theearth, surrounded by an arching expanse of indigo blue skyand sun shimmering ocean. Beyond the bounds of Brooklyn, brushing that very sk>': the spires of Manhattan. Tears ofjoy, sorrow, anticipation and sheer adrenaline, and then acannon shot and we were off, engulfing the bridge, filling itsempty expanse with 29,000 eager runners, each with ourindividual dreams & expectations.

The start of the New York City Marathon. The start of a wonderful journey.

So began my own journey through the 20.2 miles ofStaten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx (tiie Home ofthe World Champion Yankees) and Manhattan. It was anexhilarating, joyous, exuberant celebration of human spiritand camaraderie. 1 ran in a continuous party; cheers fromspectators, liigh fives everywhere, music from localstreet bands, hugs and kisses from friends and constantencouragement from Lee Saroken who very graciouslyvolunteered to shepherd me through my first marathon.

When I began this project some 11 months ago, I neverdreamed that the marathon experience would be such anemotional high. I had heard stories of the glorious feelingof the finish line, the crowds along the way, but one muste.xperience these things in one's own terms to fully appreciatethem. The fact that I ran for the Leukemia society onlyheightened the euphoria.

I would recommend that anyone who is training for amarathon plan to participate in a fund raising effort atleast once. 1 was very afraid of the fund raising aspect.1 mean, who wants to badger one's friends for money; dollarsare stretched tight for most of us these days. However, I

found that the generosity of all my contributors was onlyoutmatched by their sincere words of support andencouragement. Without exception, everyone whom I contactedconsidered it an honor to be included in my effort and contributedgladly.

The Leukemia Society provided me with fund raisingsuggestions, sample letters and offered help with composingmy letter. There are other ways to raise money withoutdoing mailings, and they arc very imaginative !!! I am sureother charitable groups, e.g. The American Cancer Society,Sloan-Kettering Hospital, etc., can also supply you withassistance in jump-starting your fund raising drive.

It is not really difficult. The contributions justroll in and accumulate and, voila', before you know ityou have reached your goal M

1 found that knowing 1 was training for and ultimatelynmning in a marathon with a purpose beyond that of personalsatisfaction alone... that knowledge made all the differencefor me. 1 ran and finished this marathon with a deeplyemotional & spiritual sense of the community of mankind,of the essential goodness in all of us, the palpablereality that together we can make a difference.

Please make your next marathon one that will makea difference a difference for you and someonestruggling against all odds to defeat a tough enemy.Join the Leukemia Society's Team in Training or anyother charity you desire....do it for yourself, youwon't regret the decision.

You may contact Jean Montano at 914-949-0084 forinformation about Team in Training. They are noworganizing a trip to the London Marathon !!

I Know How Phidippides DiedBy V. Juliano

A long, long time ago, in a far-away place, far from theshores of Taconic, in a little town called Marathon. . .

Do you believe in fairy tales? 1 have some beach-frontproperty in Shrub Oak to sell, too!

The Phi-man didn't die. He lived to manage themodern day 26,2 in Greece. He wanted to make sure at leastsome of us did die running this one. He never liked the untruestory of his collapsing and dying after calling "NIKE" over thePersians after the battle of Marathon. His desire was to avengehis honor and become the race director from hell many yearslater. So. this 100th anniversary run seemed appropriate.

On October 20th, I think Zeus and Hera must havebeen arguing again. They were paying little attention to us meremortals here on earth. I don't understand: I was running rightby Zeus' temple, praying for strength. It wasn't answered! What followed, though, created havoc amongst some of usTaconics. Phi-man did his own praying to the gods. Poseidongranted little water. Apollo drummed up plenty of heat andsunshine, and Athena helped create an humongous traffic jamwith plenty of irate drivers. I thought for sure that Alexander theGreat was about to cut my legs off at the 30K. At that point, hope was gone on any PR's. It didn't matter anyway. Mr. Phi

didn't have mile splits in 490 B.C., and neither did we. Somesaid they saw a digital clock at the start, but it wasn't to be foundat the finish. I think they enlisted a group of Greek fishermen torecord bib numbers, though.

In spite of this, some of us did survive and completethis respectably. He douldn't have known, but when I cameupon the Olympic stadium, all of death's door lifted from myshoulders. That sight was a thrill, and worth the effort. Socratesis quoted as saying, "What a disgrace it is for a man to grow oldwithoute ver seeing the beauty and strength of which his body iscapable." I cannot think of a better place to run a marathon.

The "Great Eight" Taconics all had a good time.Whoever said tours could be a bore was wrong. MarathonTours put up a good spread for all of us. They have a lot ofexperience at it. Being with like minds and people carries thistype of tour off very well. (What runner doesn't like to tell ofhis/her war stories, other races and accomplishments?) Justrunning with someone for 26.2 miles kind of makes you longtime buddies - which I found.

Some Taconics are already talking about going toDublin in '97. 1 always wanted to visit Italy someday, andVenice '97 is where I hope to go. Maybe we can pass around asign-up sheet at the next meeting — who is interested?

Vinny displays the Taconic colorsat the Greek finish line.

Masters Back On Mac Track Other Races, Other PlacesBy Jim Bagg

A TRRC Masters team arrived at the Syosset Sprint4M on November 2. This race scored double points in theMAC series and it was at this venue last year that TRRCstarted to distance thcmseh es from Runners Edge.

Steve Calidonna led the way. finishing second in the40-44 age group behind perhaps the best masters runner inthe area. Paul Mascali, Nick Caswell was second Taconic.but first in the 45-49 age group. Paul Pacchianna scored forthe first time in his short Taconic career and was the difference in the team scoring, as Taconic squeaked by RunnersEdge by only 12 seconds. Ken Filmanski. back on the road toobesity, was the final team member, and was able to beat a6;00 per mile pace by 1 second.

Additional good news befell the team when it wasapproached by masters runner Rick Ashby who finished 2seconds behind Steve. Rick will be moving to the area shortlyand plans to run for Taconic. Did someone say "NationalChampions?"

If you were there, you had a good lime! Fred andChristine Reger put together a terrific part>' for all of Taconicat this year's dinner dance. The music was fun. Dancing wasenthusiastic. Food was delicious and plentiful. And. of course, the liquid refreshments flowed freely.

This was also a time to hand out awards: some

serious, some less serious. On the "serious" side, the prestigious Member of the Year award was presented to LeeSaroken. All who know her recognize that Lee is a constantambassador and recniiter for TRRC and its teams. She can beseen behind the scenes and on the front lines at almost everyTaconic function. And. if that isn't enough, she has agreed tostep forward as the next club president. Congratulations!

Fred and Christine Reger have brought new energ\' toTaconic. They and tiieir daughters were recognized as"Taconic Family of the Year." in appreciation for their untiringcon t r i bu t i ons .

A few years ago. Greg Diamond brought Taconic to anew level of sophistication with computer scoring. He updatesthe membership mailing lists and race results on a regularbasis. This year, he brought TRRC to the internet with thedevelopment and constant editing of a homepage. Drop him anote @ http://mcmbcrs.aol.com/grcg/trrc.htm.

Thanks and congratulations were extended to EdMcLaughlin, in appreciation for his second two-year term aspresident. Taconic will continue to look for Ed for his ideasand energy.

On a less serious side, special awards were presentedto Dan Moffitt for an exceptional water slop. (It was rumoredthat his raisins. Power Bars. Gatorade, etc.. etc, in addition toiced water put him over the lop in what has become a highlycontended t i t le .

North County News won best Tee-shirt honors. (DidMargie Katt and Richie Adamski really model for the caricatures?)

Jack Magrone accepted the teasing and photo in goodhumor as his eating escapades were described and honored inthis year's special photo award to the "Magrone Zone."

Joanna Nash receiN cd a few rolls of film as a token ofthanks for the many photos she has (and continues to) contributed to Taconic Runnine Li fe,

Ken Filmanski received a fresh pack of unsharpenedpencils with new erasers to assist him in his journalisticcon t r i bu t i ons .

Lee Saroken recei\ cd a special "Join TRRC" banner toassist her in her recruiting efforts.

Joanne Bertram was presented with a bottle ofGatorade, in recognition for spearheading the "Pumphousewater stops."

And Gerr}' Radlauer and Michael Boulos took away"most enthusiast ic" revelers!

See you next year!

Saturday, December 7, 1996 was raining with temperatures in the mid 30's.Almost a perfect day to run 4+/- miles through the mud.

The normal stream crossings near the beginning of the course were lakes, and even the unfeeling course markers knew thatthe runners wheren't dumb enough to do a biathalon in Dec. To keep things from being too easy,an extra mile was addedto the middle of the courses.

Thanks to the volunteer: Dan Caffrey, Brian Wheaton, Dave Fleischman, Don Villineuvie, Liz Pasquale, Debra Kenney,Greta Olsson, Kathleen D'Ottavio, Howie Solow, Lee Saroken and Fred Reger. . .and Dave O'Toole, who made surepermits were in order.
