7) ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

Additive Manufacturing refers to a process by which digital 3D design data is used to build up a

component in layers by depositing material. The term "3D printing" is increasingly used as a

synonym for Additive Manufacturing.

PURPOSE OF THE EVENT

Additive manufacturing is an emerging technique and it is considered to be the future of

manufacturing in all fields of engineering. So it is important for an Engineer to be completely

aware of the developing technology.

THE CONCEPT

Any component to be 3D printed is scanned and morphed in the computer with 3D

modelling softwares like autodesk etc., and then printed in the 3D printer which uses liquid

resins by pouring it in the programmed areas along with binding material which solidifies the

fluid and finishes the component. There are other methods like laser sintering etc.

EXPECTATIONS

A basic knowledge about the process involved in additive manufacturing and the various

methods involved.

RULES OF THE EVENT

All the participants will be shown a 3D component which has to be modelled by

the participants.

The 3D model should be done by the use of hands and some stationery kits etc.

The material that will be used to do the model will be told only during the event.

Participants should submit a report on the model they developed and they will

go through a viva with the judge.

Team size : 4 students.

All kits and aids will be provided.

Page 9: 1)CIRCUIT DESIGN - saeiss.orgsaeiss.org/saeiss/uploads/2016/10/Update-23-events... · 7) ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING Additive Manufacturing refers to a process by which digital 3D design

SOFTWARE

Modelling & Flow analysis (Solidworks, NX CAD, Ansys FLUENT or any equivalent software)

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge on automobile design

Hands on experience on Design and Flow analysis software

BLUEPRINT

Prelims: Each team will be given a model of 3D object. They will have to do certain

modifications and perform flow analysis to reduce the Drag coefficient value.

Finals: Each selected team will be given a rough model of a car. They will have to do certain

modifications and perform flow analysis to reduce the Drag coefficient value.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Depending upon the maximum difference in the initial and final values of Drag coefficient.

TIME DUARTION

Prelims: 1 hour

Finals: 3 hours

NOTE

Drag coefficient is a common measure in automotive design as it pertains to aerodynamics.

Drag is a force that acts parallel and in the same direction as the airflow. The drag coefficient of

automobile impacts the way the automobile passes through the surrounding air. The reduction

of drag in road vehicles has led to increases in the top speed of the vehicle and the vehicle's

fuel efficiency, as well as many other performance characteristics, such as handling and

acceleration. Lowering the drag coefficient comes from streamlining the exterior body of the

vehicle. When automobile companies design a new vehicle they take into consideration the

automobile drag coefficient in addition to the other performance characteristics.

22) DESIGN OF ASSEMBLY

AIM:

This event tests the ability of the students to assemble different mechanical components and

parts.

DESCRIPTION:

Each student has to assemble the parts of the given mechanical component and the kinematic

simulation has to done.

PERQUISITES:

Students participating in this event should have good knowledge of general mechanical

components and should be aware of designing softwares like NX SIEMENS, SOLID WORKS,

CATIA etc.,

REQUIREMENTS:

Around 20 to 30 computers having designing softwares ( NX SIEMENS preferably).

PARTICIPANTS EXPECTED:

Around 75 to 100 participants can be expected . If the number of registrations are more we

would make it a team event with 2 members per team.

JUDGEMENT CRITERIA:

Whoever finishes the assembly in the least time would be considered the winner and

simulation is also useful to test the perfection of the assembly.
