We want everything to be on time. We dont want to waste time waiting for something, not knowing when it will happen. This also applies to our discipleship jour- ney. We want to know when the Lord is coming. So that we can prepare and be ready for His coming. But, as Jesus tells us; about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. It might sound pessimistic. It might even prompt some doubts in faith. But Jesus does not intend to discourage us. He assures us that His coming is certain, but that its coming will be unexpected. The season of Advent returns and a new li- turgical year begins as we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent today. We will hear again and again these words: The hour is at hand, you must be ready for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.Advent invites us to enter into the stage in which the coming of the Lordis promised but, as for when it will happen, no one knows. The timing is not the cru- cial matter; it is our preparation that mat- ters. The Advent season provides us with an opportunity to prepare and be ready. It in- vites us to be an Advent people, waiting for the Lords coming. It calls us to be active in waiting confidently for his coming, set- ting our hearts on God, and deepening our relationship with God and His people. Saint Paul says, We instructed you how to live in the way that pleases God, and you are so living, but make more progress still. Advent announces that the Lords coming will happen soon. It is a time of prepara- tion. It calls us to ourselves, because we know that the Person who is coming has the power to change our lives, and that He will take us into his own Kingdom where we will share true joy and the fullness of life. We must always be ready because He comes at an unex- pected time, with no great fanfare or grand parades. The Lord comes again because He loves us and wants our salvation. Advent is a time to remem- ber Gods great gift, the gift of his own beloved Son, made human to be one like us. The Son then shared His Fathers love by giving His own life for everyone who comes to Him. Dur- ing this season of Advent, we are invited to give, in return, our gift to God by preparing ourselves for his coming. This is the time, as todays gospel reminds us, therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.Redempt Jawa CSsR © Redemptorists 2019 Liturgy Help © 2019 Liturgy Help © 2019

First Reading Is 21-5 A reading from the prophet Isaiah

The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem In the days to come the mountain of the Temple of the Lord shall tower above the mountains and be lift-ed higher than the hills All the nations will stream to it peoples without number will come to it and they will say lsquoCome let us go up to the mountain of the Lord to the Temple of the God of Jacob that he may teach us his ways so that we may walk in his paths since the Law will go out from Zion and the oracle of the Lord from Jerusalemrsquo He will wield authority over the nations and adjudi-cate between many peoples these will hammer their swords into ploughshares their spears into sickles Nation will not lift sword against nation there will be no more training for war O House of Jacob come let us walk in the light of the Lord The Word of the Lord

Responsorial Psalm

(R) Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord

1 I rejoiced when I heard them say lsquoLet us go to Godrsquos housersquo And now our feet are standing within your gates O Jerusalem (R)

2 It is there that the tribes go up the tribes of the Lord For Israelrsquos law it is there to praise the Lordrsquos name There were set the thrones of judgement of the house of David (R)

3 For the peace of Jerusalem pray lsquoPeace be to your homes May peace reign in your walls in your palaces peacersquo (R)

4 For love of my brethren and friends I say lsquoPeace upon yoursquo For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good (R)

Second Reading Rom 1311-14 A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Romans

You know lsquothe timersquo has come you must wake up now our salvation is even nearer than it was when we were converted The night is almost over it will be daylight soon ndash let us give up all the things we prefer to do under the cover of the dark let us arm ourselves and appear in the light Let us live decently as people do in the daytime no drunken orgies no promiscuity or licentiousness and no wrangling or jealousy Let your armour be the Lord Jesus Christ

The Word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia alleluia

Lord show us your mercy and love and grant us your salvation Alleluia

Gospel Mt 2437-44

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus said to his disciples lsquoAs it was in Noahrsquos day so will it be when the Son of Man comes For in those days before the Flood people were eating drinking taking wives taking husbands right up to the day Noah went into the ark and they suspected nothing till the Flood came and swept all away It will be like this when the Son of Man comes Then of two men in the fields one is taken one left of two women at the millstone grinding one is taken one left lsquoSo stay awake because you do not know the day when your master is coming You may be quite sure of this that if the householder had known at what time of the night the burglar would come he would have stayed awake and would not have allowed any-one to break through the wall of his house There-fore you too must stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expectrsquo
