The First Joyful Mystery The Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary follow Mary’s journey as the mother of young Jesus. Through her eyes, we can see God’s love for the world. He loves all of us SO much that He gave His only Son, so that we may one day join Him in Heaven. During this Sea-son of Advent, we will reflect on those mysteries as we prepare for Christ’s coming. The first Joyful Mystery is the Annunciation. Luke 1:26-38 tells the account of The Annunciation when the Angel Gabriel asks Mary to bear God’s Son. “And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Mary shows perfect Faith in saying YES to God! We call this her Fiat. We pray this first mystery of the Ro-sary, and ask Mary to help us surrender our will to God, as He has perfect plans for our lives. *Cut and color each of the pictures this month to create your own Joyful Mysteries booklet!

THE ANNUNCIATION

Advent Week 1: The Candle of Hope As we enter into the first week of Advent and a new liturgical year, we are called to reflect on many aspects of our lives. The purple vestments worn during Advent and the purple can-dles of the Advent wreath signify a time of penance, sacrifice, and preparation. While these themes are similar to those of Lent, Advent also marks a time of hopeful anticipation for the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ, and for His second coming at the end of time. By utilizing an Advent wreath, Catholics can have a visual representation of the coming of Jesus - the light in the dark-ness. The four candles (three purple and one pink) are typically held in a circle of evergreen branches which in itself sig-nifies the passing of time and eternal life. The circular shape also connects to the infinite love Jesus has for us and His promise of eternal life with Him in Heaven. Over the next four weeks, we will examine the themes specific to each of the Advent Candles and what that means for our lives on Earth now. Theme: Hope Color: Purple During this week of Advent we are reminded to be hopeful as we anticipate Christ’s birth. Just as the first faithful held fast to the message of the prophets, we too are called to have hope in the coming of the Messiah and the fulfillment of God’s promises to us as His people. Prayer: “Bestir, O Lord, Thy might, we pray thee and come; that, defended by Thee, we may deserve rescue from ap-proaching dangers brought on by our sins, and being set free by Thee, obtain our salvation. Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.”

Next week: The Candle of Peace

SAINTS OF THE WEEKSAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, December 1: St. Edmund Campion—Martyr St. Edmund Campion was born in London, England on January 24, 1540. He was raised Catholic and acquired a strong education, but drifted away to Protestantism. He took the Oath of Supremacy acknowledging Queen Elizabeth as the head of the church, and became an Anglican deacon. Edmund began to doubt his Protestant-ism, so he traveled to Ireland to reflect and realized the errors of his ways. He returned to the Catholic Church, joined the Society of Jesus, and was ordained a priest in 1578. In 1580, he was chosen to be a missionary to England. While there, he was betrayed and handed over to the authorities. Edmund resisted temptations to renounce his Faith, which resulted in him being hanged, drawn, and quartered for treason.

Monday, December 2: St. Bibiana—Virgin and Martyr St. Bibiana was born sometime in the 300s as the daughter of two Roman Christians, Flavian and Dafrosa. When persecutions began under the governor, Apronianus, both of her parents were tortured and killed, leaving Bibiana and her sister alone in poverty. The two sisters began to fast and pray. Angered that their spirits weren’t broken, the governor summoned the sisters. Demetria, the sister of Bibiana, was killed on the spot for her Faith. Bibiana was sent to live with a woman named Rufina, who physically attacked her and tried to lead her into sin. Seeing that this was having no effect, the governor summoned Bibiana again, where he had her beaten at a pillar and struck with lead plummets until she died.

Tuesday, December 3: St. Francis Xavier—Confessor St. Francis Xavier was born on April 7, 1506 into a noble family in the castle of Xavier in Navarre, Spain. When he reached 18 years of age, he traveled to Paris to study philosophy. While there, he met St. Ignatius Loyola at the College of St. Barbara, and was converted away from his lifestyle of worldly concerns, and followed him. On August 15, 1534, Fran-cis and others made vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He traveled to Rome, and was ordained a priest in 1537. A few years later, he became one of the original members of the Society of Jesus. He traveled to Portugal, and in 1541 was sent to India to preach the Gospel. The pope made him apostolic nuncio to the East. Francis traveled all over India, pro-ducing numerous conversions and building countless churches. In 1549, he traveled to Japan as that nation’s first Christian missionary. In 1552, he set sail for China, but came down with a fever and died on December 3, 1552.

Wednesday, December 4: St. Barbara—Virgin and Martyr St. Barbara was born in the mid-third century in Baalbek, Lebanon to a pagan named Dioscorus. On account of her beauty, her father hid her in a tower to keep her away from men. As she grew older, he presented Barbara with suitors for marriage, but she refused. She was permitted to go out into the world where she learned about Christianity and was baptized. One day, Barbara informed her father that she had converted to Christianity and would no longer worship the pagan gods. The father was angered and he handed her over to the prefect of the city where she was subjected to various tortures. Ultimately, she was beheaded by her very own father. Immedi-ately following her death, both her father and the prefect were struck by lightning and died.

Thursday, December 5: St. Nicholas Tavelic—Confessor St. Nicholas Tavelic was born in Šibenik, Croatia around the year 1340 to a noble family. He joined the Franciscans and was sent to preach the Catholic Faith in Bosnia. He served in that territory for approxi-mately 12 years. In 1384, he signed up for the missions in the Holy Land. While there his responsibilities included caring for the holy sites, protecting Christian pilgrims, and converting non-believers to the Faith. On November 11, 1391, Nicholas went with some companions to the Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem to con-vert the Muslims present there. Their attempt to preach the Gospel was met with strong resistance, and they were arrested, beaten, and eventually beheaded for their missionary efforts.

Friday, December 6: St. Abraham of Kratia—Abbot, Bishop and Hermit St. Abraham was born in Emesa, Syria around the year 474. He entered the monastery in that city, but was forced to flee once it was overrun by pagan raiders. Abraham traveled to Constantinople, Turkey where he joined another monastery. When he was 26 years of age, he was named abbot of a monastic community in Kratia. Following a decade serving in this role, he retired to Palestine and lived as a her-mit. Abraham was called back and named Bishop of Kratia, a position he served for thirteen years. He later retired from this post and returned to the life of a hermit.

Saturday, December 7: St. Maria Giuseppe Rossello—Virgin St. Maria Rossello was born to a poor family in Albisola Marina, Italy on May 27, 1811. She suffered from health prob-lems at an early age which plagued her for her entire life. Maria wanted to enter a religious order, but was turned away because of her health and inability to pay the dowry to enter. When she was sixteen, she became a Franciscan tertiary. Maria had a talent for teaching children the Catholic Faith, so her bishop gave her a house where she and three of her com-panions opened a two-room school for girls. From these women came the order which became known as the Institute of the Daughters of Mercy. This new order devoted its efforts to teaching poor girls, performing works of charity, and caring for the sick in hospitals. Maria was named superior in 1840. By the time of her death, the order operated 68 facilities.

Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the Catholic Church through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor-mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini-mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership. ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church

requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Res-urrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, pa-rishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.

RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the re-ception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.
