A Few Terms from Mr. G!

Page 2: 2 2 Science Terms

Biomes & Populations• Biome: large naturally occurring

communities of flora (plants) and fauna (animals) occupying a major habitat

• Population: Group of organisms of the same species that live in the same area

Page 3: 2 2 Science Terms

Plant & Animal Life• Plants are

PRODUCERS: Organisms that make their own food

• Animals are CONSUMERS: Organisms that eat other organisms to get energy

Page 4: 2 2 Science Terms

Abiotic & Biotic Factors• Abiotic factors:

Any nonliving part of the environment that affects organisms

• Biotic factors: Any living part of the environment that affects organisms

Page 5: 2 2 Science Terms

Prey & Predators• Prey: Organism

that is captured and fed upon by another organism.

• Predator: Organism that captures and feeds on another organism.

Page 6: 2 2 Science Terms

Food Chains & Food Webs• Food chain: The

sequence of who eats whom in the biological community

• Food web: Complex interactions of food chains that interact in an ecosystem

Adaptations of Animals• Warning

colorization: conspicuous coloring that warns a predator that an animal tastes bad or is poisonous

Page 8: 2 2 Science Terms

Adaptation of Animals• Mimicry: the

evolution of one species to look like another which is poisonous, thus fooling its predators into leaving it alone

Page 9: 2 2 Science Terms

Adaptations of Animals• Other Adaptations:

Other ways of fooling predators, including camouflage; migration; hibernation; bodily expansion; and poisonous, painful or bad-tasting exterior.

Natural & Human Impact• Natural Impact:

Impact on a climate or biome that occurs naturally, such as natural disasters, storms, droughts, invasive species, and disease.

Page 11: 2 2 Science Terms

Natural & Human Impact• Human Impact:

Impact on a climate or biome caused by humans, such as pollution, human expansion, agriculture, global warming, species extinction, etc.
