With unemployment rates at some of their highest levels in decades, United States Rep. Grace F. Napolitano gath-ered together dozens of local businesses for a “Job Faire” on Aug. 17 at the Norwalk Arts and Sports Complex.

The Con-gresswoman represents the eastern portion of the San Gabriel Valley and Southeast Los Angeles County with some of her district com-munities fac-ing staggering unemployment rates, some as high as 14% according to figures with the Department of Labor.

Napolitano spent several hours Wednesday at the event talking and listening to the concerns of both job seekers and employers.

“I am here for one reason, I need a job and have been turned down by more than 35 companies during the past year and a half,” said April Martinez, a 26 year old resident of Norwalk who holds a Bachelors Degree in Business Admin-

istration. “It is really frustrating,” Martinez

said. “You go to a university, get a degree in business and can’t find any-thing other than a part time food service worker at a local restaurant,” she said.

Another job hopeful, said that he is looking for a job as a welder, and has

been unem-ployed for nearly three years. “I am 45 years old, and no one is hiring, and I am at the end of my rope,” Victor Areola said. “I have gone through all my sav-ings, and now I will take anything to get a job.”

Congresswoman Napolitano has been responsible for hosting several job recruitment events during her past seven terms in the House of Representatives. “I am committed to getting our commu-nity back to work,” she said.

Napolitano also holds annual work-shops on how local residents can secure federal housing loans, and conducts foreclosure seminars. “We are all in this together,” she said.
