THE CONVERSION OF SAINT PAUL Saint Paul’s entire life can be explained in terms of one experience—his meeting with Jesus on the road to Damascus. In an instant, he saw that all the zeal of his dynamic personality was being wasted, like the strength of a boxer swinging wildly. Perhaps he had never seen Jesus, who was only a few years older. But he had acquired a zealot’s hatred of all Jesus stood for, as he began to harass the Church: “…entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment” (Acts 8:3b). Now he himself was “entered,” possessed, all his energy harnessed to one goal—being a slave of Christ in the ministry of reconciliation, an instrument to help others experience the one Savior.

One sentence determined his theology: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (Acts 9:5b). Jesus was mysteriously identified with people—the loving group of people Saul had been running down like criminals. Jesus, he saw, was the mysterious fulfillment of all he had been blindly pursuing.

From then on, his only work was to “present everyone perfect in Christ. For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise of his power working within me” (Colossians 1:28b-29). “For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and [with] much conviction” (1 Thessalonians 1:5a).

Paul’s life became a tireless proclaiming and living out of the message of the cross: Christians die baptismally to sin and are buried with Christ; they are dead to all that is sinful and unredeemed in the world. They are made into a new creation, already sharing Christ’s victory and someday to rise from the dead like him. Through this risen Christ the Father pours out the Spirit on them, making them completely new.

So Paul’s great message to the world was: You are saved entirely by God, not by anything you can do. Saving faith is the gift of total, free, personal and loving commitment to Christ, a commitment that then bears fruit in more “works” than the Law could ever contemplate. franciscanmedia.org

ADORATION, ROSARY & MASS Every Wednesday

You are invited to come and pray the rosary at 6:30pm with the following schedule:

8:00AM to 7:00PM All Day Adoration 6:30PM Rosary 7:00PM Mass

Dear Parish Family, For nearly 30 years many of you have either watched me grow in the faith, entrusted me with your children to teach catechesis in the Faith Formation program, or have become friends to share the journey to Christ with more closely. Saint Raphael’s has truly been a wonderful faith community, sharing in my joys and sorrows. I will be forever grateful for all that Saint Raphael Parish has done to contribute to my deepening relationship with Christ, Mary, and the Church. It is with all this in mind that I ask you to join in my joy as I continue to discern my vocation to Religious Life. On January 23rd, I enter the Sisters of Our Mother of Divine Grace as a postulant. The Sisters are located in Port Sanilac, Michigan, about two hours north of Detroit in the “thumb.” They are a newer community, only being established in the last 10 years, and live out their charism of “Unity in Truth” by ministering in a parish that was once three separate parishes, and building relationships with other faith communities in the area. You can find out more information by visiting their website: www.sistersmdg.org. One of the things about taking this step towards Religious Life, is that I realize how incredibly blessed I am in my family, friends, and witnesses to the faith. I am confident that God’s grace will continue to be poured out on Saint Raphael Parish and Sacred Heart Parish, as we come to be united and strengthened in Christ’s love so that we can continue to share the Good News with our neighbors. I will make visits home from time to time, and though I am moving 244 miles away, we will always be united through Christ. Therefore, I will not say goodbye. However, know that I will keep you all in prayer, and hope that you will remember me in yours. Sincerely in Christ through Mary,

Irene Schneider

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

January 28th - February 2nd Faith * Knowledge * Service

STEPHEN FOSTER MEMORIAL CELEBRATION Tom Starsenic, superintendent of Allegheny Cemetery, invited the students of Saint Raphael School to sing at the Stephen Foster Memorial Celebration on Friday, January 11th at the Temple of Memories Mausoleum in Allegheny Cemetery. Under the direction of Mr. Legas, our school choir sang a medley of Stephen Foster songs. They also had the opportunity to learn about the life and songs of Stephen Foster, who was born in Lawrenceville in 1826 and is buried in Allegheny Cemetery. Mr. Foster composed more that 250 songs and piec-es of music. Among his best-known works are “Camptown Races”, “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair”, and “Hard Times Come Again No More”.

All grandparents are invited to join the children of Saint Raphael’s School as they celebrate their grandparents on Wednesday,

January 30th. If their grandparents are unable to attend, we encourage students to

invite another special adult - a family friend or a relative such as an aunt or uncle.

A continental breakfast will be served.

This is a free event, however, we are asking each family to bring a canned good or

non - perishable food item for our parish food bank.

The children have received sign up sheets

which are to be returned to their homeroom teachers by January 17th. A letter will go home with the children on January 23rd

informing them to which seating time they have been assigned (8:45AM or 10:00AM).

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN 3rd GRADE? The third graders returned from holiday break and eagerly started a literature novel unit. They are reading about the adventures of a carefree mouse, Ralph, in Ralph S. Mouse by Beverly Cleary. Reading a literature novel allows students to apply comprehension skills that they have been learning since the beginning of the school year. Our geometry unit continued with measurement and finding perimeter and area of a polygon. Students also continue to practice their multiplication facts. They are learn-ing and applying different properties of math as well. We are all looking forward to Catholic Schools Week coming up on January 27th.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GIFTS OF WARMTH On behalf of all at Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, we want to thank the members of St. Raphael and Sacred Heart Parishes for all the contributions of warm clothing to our Winter Warming Station. Your donations will ease the burdens of the homeless and financially struggling men, women and families we serve. The blessings that we can bring into someone else’s life are of immeasurable worth. Your generous donations make these blessings possible, and we are grateful—but more importantly, those who we serve are grateful and blessed by it.

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE!

To Each Individual the Manifestation of the Spirit Is Given for Some Benefit – Last weekend, as we celebrated the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, we also had an opportunity to reflect on our own Baptism. Through Baptism we are washed clean of Original Sin and enter into the life of grace through the gift of the Holy Spirit. And it doesn’t end there! In Confirmation we receive the fullness of God’s Spirit and are sent forth into the world as instruments of his life and love. Yet, while we are united in the Spirit of God as his children, we are not robots who all speak the same words or who do identical deeds in God’s name. Instead, as Saint Paul reminds us in today’s second reading, each one of us shared uniquely in the gifts of the Spirit so that we might fulfill God’s unique will for us. The journey of our life of faith must then include discerning the gifts that God has given us and how he wants us to use them. This is an important part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative. If each one of us has been endowed with spiritual gifts in what ways can we use them to enliven the Church? Spend a few moments in prayer this week and ask the Lord to help you know the gifts the Spirit has bestowed upon you and how you are being called to share them. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
