HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 2

Happy Father’s Day

This weekend, we are celebrating Father’s Day. On this day, we remember all fathers, both natural and spiritual. The model and the exemplar of all fathers is Saint Joseph. He took seriously his role in the family. Saint Joseph was a spouse and a father and lived here on earth as if he were already in heaven. In a world where sometimes values are lacking, let us entrust all fathers to Saint Joseph and take him as the example for his important contribution to the Holy Family. In 1989, Saint John Paul II wrote an his apostolic exhortation on Saint Joseph, that “This bond of charity was the core of the Holy Family’s life, first in the poverty of Bethle-hem, then in their exile in Egypt, and later in the house of Nazareth.”

In the Gospel, when Jesus started his public life, he talks about the Father so many times. He revealed to us who the Father is. We know that the existence of God the Father ne-cessitates the existence of God the Son. By that same logic, a man is only called a father when he has a child. Similarly, we rightly call priests “fathers” for their spiritual fatherhood because they are spiritual fathers to the many souls entrusted to their care.

So today, let’s ask for the grace that all fathers, natural or spiritual, would acquire the vision of God and become like Jesus especially when he said to Philip: “Those who have seen me have seen the Father.” Happy Father’s Day!

Corpus Christi Holy Hour We want to thank our seminarian Sean Farrell for the super job of organizing the Corpus

Christi Outdoor Benediction last Sunday afternoon. It was a beautiful service, especially see-ing so many young families with children attending. Sean pulled this devotion together in a reverent way with very little time to do so. It was a lovely end to a day of grace from the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

3 ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE

Completing the Merger Process The process of naming our new parish is now beginning. This is an excit-ing part of becoming one. We would like all parishioners to be involved in this important process. Closer to our merger date of January 2021, five names will be submitted to Bishop Zubik as suggestions for his prayerful consideration. In July, our Pastoral Council will collect all name submissions and narrow the list to 15 names. It is helpful to review what it means to become one parish. A parish, by definition, must have three compo-nents: 1) a designated territory or geographical location, 2) people, and 3) priests to serve the people. A parish differs from a church, which is a sacred place of worship in service to the parish. Our new parish will be served by Sacred Heart and Saint Raphael churches.

General Overview of the Process You are invited to submit names for our new parish until July 7, 2020. Your submission will include three parts: the name itself, a rationale for proposing the name, and your name. Your suggestions may be submitted electronically through our website at www.bestpghparish.org/new-name, via email at [email protected] or by completing the paper form below and mailing it back to Manon Proulx at Sacred Heart Parish, 310 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

Any proposed name should be taken from: • the Most Holy Trinity; • Our Lord Jesus Christ, invoked under a mystery of his life or under his name as used in the liturgy

or Scripture; • the Holy Spirit; • the Blessed Virgin Mary under a given title already found in the liturgy; • the holy angels; • a saint from the list found in the Church’s calendar of memorials and feasts; • all names of those who are beatified or named “blessed”.

Please avoid the following: • a name that is already used many times in the diocese • hyphenated names of current parishes (absolutely not permitted) • the names of other parishes, Catholic and non-Catholic, in or near the territory of our new parish

(because that may cause confusion)

HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 4

Pastoral Council Update

Turning to One Another (Margaret Wheatley, 2002): Margaret Wheatley is a popular organizational theorist. Reflect with us using her quote below, how the first draft Mission Statement below and also mailed to you this week begin to em-body what Wheatley believes about community?

There is no power greater than a community discovering what it cares about. Ask “What’s possible?” not “What’s wrong?” Keep asking. Notice what you care about.

Assume that many others share your dreams. Be brave enough to start a conversation that matters. Talk to people you know. Talk to people you don’t know. Talk to people you never talk to.

Be intrigued by the differences you hear. Expect to be surprised. Treasure curiosity more than certainty. Invite in everybody who cares to work on what’s possible.

Acknowledge that everyone is an expert about something. Know that creative solutions come from new connections. Remember, you don’t fear people whose story you know.

Real listening always brings people closer together. Trust that meaningful conversations can change your world. Rely on human goodness. Stay together.

First draft of our On Mission Pastoral Council’s Mission Statement: We are an urban parish of Pittsburgh’s East End dedicated to serving one another both within and outside our parish, but especially to the poor and marginalized of our community. Empowered by Christ to spread the good news of salvation, we are committed to forming intentional disciples of every age and accompanying them in their faith journey, with the goal of fostering an encounter with and deepening our relationship to Jesus Christ. We do this joyfully rooted in the Eucharist and our Catholic faith, employing our diversity and talents to support one another and build the Kingdom of God in love, mercy, and justice.

Coming Attraction: Father Joe wants to schedule summer backyard sessions again. These sessions will invite people to share with him their initial responses to the proposed Mission Statement for the new parish that we will become in Janu-ary. All the CDC guidelines for outdoor gatherings will be followed. Each session will be held on the lawn of either the Saint Raphael or Sacred Heart campuses. Details next week.

5 HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

Welcome to our New Parishioners Our new parish is committed to be a community where all are welcome. We believe that everyone is called to be on a spiritual journey and what matters is not where a person is on that journey, but that they are actually on the journey it-self. We warmly welcome with open arms our newest parishioners. As a new parish in January of 2021, we want to be-come with these new members a hospital for sinners, not a hotel for Saints. We simply ask that they help us and be open with us to what God is calling all of us to become. (excerpt from Divine Renovation by Fr. James Mallon)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Shalom!

I am writing this letter to let you how much I appreciate the love and support you have given me since I have joined St. Raphael family. After my first mass here in this Parish, I went home and told my sister Meta that I found my home. It was not about the beautiful building or the homily that day, but the people who welcomed me with open harms before knowing my name. So, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all. The past three mouths have been very difficult for all of us. The confinement and the uncertainty of this virus made everyday routine very challenging. We found ourselves watching television more than usual. Also in my case, I prayed morning prayers, the rosary, the divine mercy chaplet and even the vespers with the bishop and seminarians. However, watching George Floyd dying in front of me was not part of my new routine. It was not part of the better life some of us left our troubled mother land to find in the United States of American. Parents find themselves in fear for the children they are raising here. I witnessed my sister worrying about her African American young men she is bringing up in this country. I will admit that in the past, those kind of incidents seemed so far way until the video of Mr. Floyd. I saw my nephews and myself in him. It scared me! That is why I come to you my brothers and sisters who welcomed me some years back to pray for our human family on this planet. All the children of God’s family are created at his own image. Hate and racism is not of God and we are not born with them. Please let us make it our mission to pray for one and another and teach our color blind children and nephews to love like Jesus loves us. Let us cry to God to deliver us from these spirits of hate and racism. To allow ourselves to see Christ in everyone we encounter in our every day life . Thank you, May God bless

Response to the death of George Floyd and National Protest To continue from last week’s bulletin, in respond to the death of George Floyd and the National Protest, the following is an open letter to our parishioners from one of our Council Members, Rita Kafutshi.

In 1910, Pope St. Pius X with his decree Quam Singulari, allowed children who have reached the “age of reason” (around seven years old) are permitted to receive the Eucharist. He underlined Jesus’ words to the disciples: “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like little children, you will not enter into the kingdom of heaven … And whoever receives one such little child for my sake, receives me.”

Who is Saint John the Baptist: Saint John, a Jewish man, was born in the

early 1st century AD. He is revered as a major religious figure and is called a prophet by many faith and honored as a saint in many Christian traditions. According to the New Testament, John the Bap-tist and Jesus of Nazareth were relatives. After a period of desert solitude, he emerged as a prophet. He had a circle of disciples, and Jesus was among those who received the rite of baptism.

His mission was, in order to prepare for God’s judgement on the world, to proclaim that people should repent of their sins, be baptized, and produce appropriate fruits of repentance.

He is the precursor or forerunner of Jesus and even is recognized as the start of the Christian era. Jesus saw in John the last and greatest of the prophets, identified as "Elijah who is to come", which is a direct reference to the prophecy of Malachi 4:5–6, that has been confirmed by the angel who announced John's birth to his father Zecharia.

According to the New Testament John was sentenced to death and subsequently beheaded by Herod Antipas sometime between AD 28 and 36 after John rebuked him for divorcing his wife, Phasaelis, and then unlawfully wedding Herodias, the wife of his brother Herod Philip I.

It is probable that John’s followers buried his body and revered his tomb at Sebaste (originally Samaria). Saint John the Baptist is the patron saint of Jordan since his beheading is said to have taken place there. He is also the

patron saint of Puerto Rico. More to the north, he is a patron saint of French Canada and Newfoundland. In Quebec, his feast day is officially called the Fête Nationale du Québec, and in Newfoundland as “Discovery Day”. Just to name a few more, he is the patron of Porto in Portugal, Jerusalem, Malta, Florence, and Genoa, Italy. His feast day is June 24.

Thanks to Jim Scanlon We would like to express our gratitude to Jim Scanlon who has been a faithful parishioner, trusted volunteer, and loyal friend of Sacred Heart Parish and school for many years. Jim served as a member of the Sacred Heart School Athletic Association, while his two children were students at SHES. He volunteered at the parish Fish Fry's, served on the school's Safety Committee, and co-chaired the Catholic Schools Week Family Breakfast. He circled the entire city block from Walnut to Emerson and Alder Streets with quiet enthusiasm and devotion. As a valued member of the Athletic As-sociation, Jim created and coordinated the use of the Activities Building. He managed the distribution and collection of building keys, communicated team schedules with coaches and school personnel and took an active role in caring for the gymnasium. Jim's ability to collaborate with the parish office, team coaches, school personnel and parents of athletes provided a seamless line of communication with everyone. His most rewarding role was that of coaching young athletes and helping them to develop personal integrity, teamwork and athletic potential.

Jim's was present and available to the multiple needs of every parish group and his respect for everyone was evident in the short time we have known him. His leadership and influence will be greatly missed at Sacred Heart. We wish him and his family God's continued blessings as he moves from Sacred Heart Parish to another area and parish of Pittsburgh.

Faith Formation / Religious Education We are now registering students who will be in grades 1 through 8 for the school year 2020 – 2021. Our Faith Formation / Religious Education will be an “at-home-family” model with the parents as the “first and best” teachers of the faith – with the support of catechists on a regular basis. Parents and students will have a text book along with many digital components, videos and assessments. This model offers flexibility and quality family time as well as a strong connection between parents and catechists. With the recommendation of our Faith Formation Advisory Board and the guidance of the Religious Education Department of the Diocese, families will find this “distance” model an enriching experience! Forms have been sent out to families cur-rently in the program. Please contact Father Steve [Faith Formation Coordinator] for a registration form or more information – 412-661-0187 or [email protected].

our St Raphael – Sacred Heart grouping will begin again in September. People who are not yet baptized and those who have been baptized in another faith community are invited to a journey of prayerful dis-cernment leading to full membership in the Catholic Church.

Please contact Father John Sweeney at 412-661-3100 to set up a time to meet with him for an initial introduction. Weekly sessions will begin after Labor Day. Be part of the “new evangelization!” Invite a friend, neighbor or family member to take part and ex-plore our faith!

If you need to schedule a Mass Intention, please call Barb at 412-661-3100

Each weekday Mass that is concelebrated by our priests can have up to three Mass intentions (one for each priest to offer). If you take a look at our Mass inten-tions list for the week, you will notice that we have many openings since no day

this week has three intentions. While we work on pinpointing our new Mass schedule, we realize that scheduling Sunday Masses may be a bit trickier at this

time, but many weekday Masses are still available. Please contact Barb at 412-661-3100, ext. 110 if you wish to schedule a Mass intention.
