tomato holds lirst rank in the vere-table garden. It is truly the kinr ofvegetables.

When properly grown tomatoplants may be made to yield largequantities of fruit. For this reason.this column next week will be de.voted in a large Ilart to the cultureof tomatoes in Victory Gardens .

We will consider staking, pruning.fertilization of soil and other salientpoints to help raising large quanti.ties of luscious fruits from compa-ratively small space.

Please look for it.

Yet, not withstandinll thesepreferences, it would be a ireat mis-take if this column encouraged thosewho uninitiated in home gardeningto attempt to grow wha tever theyliked without regard to the feasibil-ity of the undertaking.

There are certain types of vege.tables which although easily &r0wnWOllld be neither profitable oorpracticable io a small garden.Among these we might mentionpumpkins and potatoes. Vegetable.which are more difficult to grow orwhich prefer special soils and alolli' period are not recommended.Celery is one of the vegetablescOlllin. under the latter category.

The list of vegetables which isgiven below includes all varietieswhich can be easi!y grown and ma-tured before killing frosts. ThehOllle gardener may grow any num-ber in the list including all of themif he 01' she SO desires.

REVIEW

Local Scouting's most recent ad.dition to the military services of ournation was the call of Edward Wells.Scoulmaster of Detroit Troop 29.

Wells was commilsioned as cap.tain in a motor transport divisionand ordered to report to Camp Leefor duty immediately. He was em-ployed with the 0 Ids - Cad i11a cbranch of General Moton sincecoming to Delroit shortly afterWorld War I. He has been inter-ested in boys work for over 2.2years and became Scoutmaster ofTroop 29 10 years ago. During hisScoutlOg career he berved as a vol-unteer leader not only in his owntroop but as swimming and life sav.ing instructor in various schoolpool<.

At the Detroit area Scout coun-cil's annual me~ting in 1941, \Vellswas honored by the award of thesilver beal'er, a national Scoul hon-or for his outstanding sen'ices toboyhood. He recehed his eaglebadge in May 1935.

Attention! Gro'lePointe BuRnea Men'sLeague Bowler.

Captain Well, is the loath localScout leader, (according to localcouncil record) to be called to ac.tive service since Pearl Harbor.Scouting's ranks of lea.dership havebeen seriously d~pleted by enlist-ments but most sponsoring institu.tions such as churches and schools.have met the difficulty by recruitingprospective leaders from bigher agebrad'ets ...... 5 was the case in 1917and 1918, Scout membership is onthe increase because many boys arefinding a,'enues of p"blic servicethrough the Scouting program suchas slavage collecting, "ictory gard.ening, food conservatioa programs, war bond sales promotion, and OCDmessenger service.
