1The Pirates Won Their Second PBC Championship Last Season With A 15-1 Record

The AASU men’s basketball team enters the 2001-2002 season having to deal with a lot of new things - anew head coach in John Marhefka, nine new players toincorporate and a new task in defending the school’ssecond Peach Belt Conference championship.

Not everything has changed for the Pirates, how-ever, from last season’s squad that won a school-record 16 games in a row, earned the first Division IInational ranking for the program in over 20 years andculminated their record-breaking season with a trip tothe NCAA Championships, just the Pirates’ secondsuch postseason trip since joining the Peach Belt in1991.

True, the head coach is new, but in title only.Marhefka, the top assistant to departed head coachGriff Mills last season, assumes the head coachingposition having spent four of his last five seasons withthe Pirates in both a graduate assistant and full assis-tant coaching capacity. Marhefka’s assistant coach in

2001-2002will beformerAASU guardSteve Ray,who movesup from hisgraduateassistantcoachingduties fromlast season. The thirdcoach on thePirates’ staffis also afamiliar face- two-timePeach Belt

Conference Player of the Year Robert Campbell willbe on the bench, assisting coach Marhefka and coachRay this season as well.

Nine new players dot the Pirates’ roster, but AASUalso returns five key contributors to last season’s team,

2 The Pirates’ 16-game Winning Streak In 2000-2001 Was A School Record

Two-time All-America guard Robert Campbellwill join the AASU coaching staff in 2001-2002to help the Pirates defend their Peach BeltConference Championship.

Senior guard Mick Jordan is thePeach Belt Conference’s leadingcareer three-point shooter goinginto 2001-2002.

including the starting backcourt of seniors DontaHumphries (5-10, Sr., Statesboro, Ga.) and MickJordan (5-9, Sr., Sarasota, Fla.).

Humphries, who transferred to AASU from Geor-gia Southern last season, made an immediate impacton the Pirates in 2001-2002, averaging 6.4 points, 3.1assists and 1.5 steals a game as a junior. Playingmostly two- and three-guard for AASU, Humphriesstill ranked among the Peach Belt leaders in assistsand steals and will focus more on becoming a truepoint guard for the Pirates in his senior season.

The Peach Belt Conference’s leading career threepoint shooter, Jordan will be one of the top offensiveweapons for the Piratesin 2001-2002 afterhitting 50.4 percent ofhis three-pointers in2001-2002 and helpingthe Pirates rank 7th inNCAA Division II inthree-point shooting.Jordan ranks second all-time on the Pirates’three-point shooting listand needs just 35 three-pointers to becomeAASU’s all-time leaderin three-pointers made.

The Pirates’frontcourt in 2001-2002will benefit from the return of Bart Westgeest (6-9,Sr., Wassenaar, The Netherlands). A key bench com-ponent AASU’s Peach Belt Conference run each of thelast two seasons, Westgeest will have the opportunityto start in the middle as a senior and brings a hard-working mentality and toughness to the main postposition for the Pirates. Westgeest averaged 3.8 pointsand 3.4 rebounds per game last season, playing 15minutes a contest, and should see those numbers risein 2001-2002.

AASU has two other key returnees in guardsBrian Hobbs (6-1, Jr., Loganville, Ga.) and JustinWood (6-0, Soph., Midland, Mich.). Hobbs, another

Sophomore guard Justin Wood is one offive returnees for the Pirates from lastseason’s squad that set a school recordwith 16 consecutive wins.

Junior forward Lamarr Chears, whoearned All-OCCAC honors atLakeland CC in 2001-2001, is one ofnine Pirate newcomers.

long-distancestandout for thePirates who hit 24three-pointers lastseason, will be inthe mix at shoot-ing guard whileWood, a walk-onfreshman lastseason who sawaction in 31games, will com-pete for time at thepoint guard spot.

For the Pirates tobe successful in2001-2002, how-ever, several of thenine newcomers

will have to make an immediate contribution. That contribution could come from Missouri

Southern State transfer Willard Winn (6-7, Sr.,Brunswick, Mo.). Winn averaged 7.8 points for theLions and led the squad in blocked shots last seasonand projects to be a solid power forward for thePirates this season.

Joining Winn in the Pirate frontcourt will beOwens CC transfer Lamarr Chears (6-6, Jr., Toledo,Ohio), Calvary Baptist HS standout Josh Abernathy(6-6, Fr., Savannah, Ga.) and Cedar Valley Collegetransfers Nik Douyias (7-0, Jr., Ionnina, Greece) andIan Jones (6-6, Jr., Oklahoma City, Okla.). A skilledoffensive player, Douyias gives the Pirates a goodscoring threat in the middle while Chears, Jones andAbernathy can each see action at the forward posi-tions in 2001-2002.

The Pirates also bring in two more junior collegetransfers, Dave Pisarcik (6-3, Jr., Brook Park, Ohio)and Jason Sanders (6-5, Jr., Fort Walton Beach, Fla.)who are skilled enough to play this season at guard orsmall forward. Pisarcik brings toughness and a goodscoring mentality to the Pirates, while Sanders has thequickness and size to be successful in both positions.

Rounding out the Pirate newcomers are walk-onsLuke McGee (6-6, Fr., Savannah, Ga.) and RobbRitch (6-4, Soph., Mexico Beach, Fla.). McGee, ahigh school teammate of Josh Abernathy, will adddepth at center and Ritch could see time at both guardand forward.

The Peach Belt Conference elected to move from16 conference games to19 conference games, adding to the impor-tance of the league’sannual slate. AASUstarts off the seasonwith two road trips toWingate - the team thatknocked the Pirates outof the NCAA SouthAtlantic Regional lastseason - and Presbyte-rian, then also plays ahome-and-home withcross-town rival Savan-nah State. S ince its founding in 1935, Armstrong AtlanticState University has continued to develop tomeet the Savannah community’s educational

needs. From its first location in Armstrong House indowntown Savannah to its current home on a scenic250-acre lot off of Abercorn, the university has becomeone of the finest educational institutions in the South-eastern United States.

Armstrong Junior College was established by theMayor of Savannah and other public officials in 1935.Housed in the beautiful and historic Armstrong House,a gift to the city from the family of George F.Armstrong, Armstrong Junior College grew over theyears to occupy eight additional buildings in theForsyth Park and Monterey Square areas.

In 1959, as Armstrong College of Savannah, itbecame a two-year unit of the University System.

The Board of Regents conferred four-year statuson Armstrong in 1964 and the college moved to itspresent 250-acre location, a gift from DonaldLivingston and the Mills B. Lane Foundation, in December of 1965.Additional buildings joined the eight original structures asArmstrong added professional and graduate programs and tripled insize.

In July of 1996, the Board of Regents voted to rename thecollege to Armstrong Atlantic State University to reflect its missionand identity. The university’s reputation of excellence is still evidentin its dedication to students, with a supportive environment.

2000-2001: A Season To Remember

26 AASU Won 13 Straight Games In 2000-2001 By Eight Points Or Less

The Armstrong Atlantic State men’sbasketball squad enjoyed a season toremember in 2001-2002, capturing itssecond Peach Belt Conference champion-ship, collecting a school-record 16-gamewinning streak and earning the school’sfirst national ranking in 17 years.

Led by two-time Division II All-America Robert Campbell and seniorsGreg Favors, Tavares Brown and CyrilleMainnemarre, the Pirates ranked in the top25 nationally in scoring defense (65.6 ppg,21st), field goal percentage (49.5 percent,11th), field goal percentage defense (40.5percent, 19th) and three-point shooting(41.1 percent, 7th). The Pirates opened thePeach Belt season with 15 straight leaguewins, a record, and finished the year with aschool record-tying 25 wins. AASU alsoascended as high as No. 22 in the DivisionII Bulletin Top 25 poll and advanced to theNCAA Championships for only the secondtime since the Pirates joined the Peach BeltConference in 1991.

This from a team that started the season an unimpres-sive 1-2 at the Disney’s Division II TipOff Classic in earlyNovember and, as late as Christmas, stood at just 7-5 on theyear. Beginning with a sound 70-51 win over Valdosta Stateon December 30th, the Pirates would reel off 16 consecu-tive wins, including a remarkable 13 straight where themargin of victory was just eight points or less. During thestreak, the Pirates:• Trailed at Georgia College &State University by 14 points, 58-45, with 6:33 remaining in thesecond half but rallied to forceovertime and win, 73-68.• Erased a 10-point deficit toUSC Aiken with three pointsremaining, using a RobertCampbell three-pointer with onesecond left for a 66-63 win athomecoming.• Trailed GC&SU at home bysix with 2:15 left, but rallied towin, 67-66.

The Pirates swept the seasonseries with Kennesaw State forthe first time in school historyand also defeated ColumbusState three times during the year,

Cyrille Mainnemarre and the Piratesdefeated Columbus State three timesduring the 2000-2001 season, includingpicking up their first-ever win over theCougars in PBC Tournament play.

including a 76-71 win in the Peach BeltConference tournament that was thePirates’ first-ever triumph over the Cougarsin conference tournament action. Individually, senior Robert Campbellembarked on a season-long chase for theall-time NCAA Division II steals record.Trailing Oronn Brown of Clarion by 117coming into the 2000-2001 season,Campbell - already AASU’s and the PeachBelt Conference’s leader in steals - col-lected a career-high 113 steals to finishsecond by just four thefts to Brown on theall-time NCAA Division II steals chart. Thetwo-time PBC Player of the Year, Campbelladded plenty of other highlights during hiscareer, becoming the PBC’s all-time leaderin assists, earning All-PBC honors threeconsecutive years for the first time inschool history and finishing his Piratecareer as the all-time leader in gamesplayed and third on the all-time pointscoring chart, becoming just the thirdAASU player to score 1,500 career points.

Senior Greg Favors earned All-PBC honors and in justtwo seasons with the Pirates, ranks 10th all-time in AASUhistory in rebounds. Senior Tavares Brown, who holds theAASU mark for all-time games played with Campbell at118, became the 15th player in AASU history to score1,000 points and ended his career eight on the all-timerebounds chart.

AASU Honor Roll

36 Robert Campbell Was AASU’s First Two-Time All-America Selection In 21 Years

With a history as long as the existence of basketball atArmstrong, the Dearing Cup has become a symbolamong the Pirate faithful for dedication, preparation and

execution on the basketball court. Named for longtime Savannah andArmstrong Atlantic State basketball supporter Ashley Dearing, theDearing Cup is awarded to the AASU player with the best free throwpercentage each season. Below are listed the winners of the DearingCup - an award that has been given each of the past 47 years. Last year, junior Mick Jordan (right, pictured receiving the awardfrom Ashley Dearing) captured the Dearing Cup by hitting 32 of his 37free throws for an outstanding .865 free throw percentage. Historic Savannah, Georgia, islocated on the Atlantic Coast, at theconfluence of the Savannah River and theAtlantic Ocean. Throughout its history, there has been one adjective consistentlyused to describe Savannah: beautiful.

The reason? There’s something aboutthe unique beauty of Savannah thatcannot be forgotten. Streets with canopiesof moss-laden trees are honored venuesfor scores of historic homes. The townsquares that Savannah’s founding father,James Oglethorpe, laid out as publicmeeting places are now treasured “pocketparks” located throughout the downtownarea.

A renovated waterfront area serves asthe hub for shopping and entertainment.Nearby sandy beaches draw streams ofvisitors with persistent cool breezes andthe endless lure of the rolling sea. Finally, there’s an indescribable - but readilydiscernable - feeling in the air thatpervades Savannah, a kind of “laid back”approach to the world, a “rootedness” that makes living orworking in Savannah an experience second to none.

By way of affirmation, Le Monde, the leading Frenchnewspaper, called Savannah “the most beautiful city in NorthAmerica.”

Savannah has recently captured the imagination of a nationthrough its history and its appearance in several feature films, including “Glory,” “Forrest Gump,” “Something to Talk About,”“Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil” and the 2000 hit

This Is Savannahfilm “The Legend of Bagger Vance”starring Will Smith and Matt Damon. Also, Savannah hosted the yachtingevents of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Asa result, tourism has become one of theleading industries in the area.

Savannah hosts over six milliontourists each year. Tourism impacts theSavannah area by over $634 million. Thecity boasts over 7,000 rooms and morethan 100 restaurants as folks have learnedthat Savannah is more than just aconvenient rest stop on the interstate toFlorida.

The climate of Savannah featureswarm, and sometimes hot, weather formost of the year. There are seven monthsin which the average temperature is 70degrees or higher. The lowest averagehigh is in January at 60.3 degrees.

The population in Savannah isroughly 130,000 and Chatham County isthe fifth most populous county in thestate of Georgia.

Savannah also sits centrally located to some of the southeast’sfinest beaches. Tybee Island, located less than 30 minutes fromArmstrong Atlantic State’s campus, offers six miles of unspoiledsands, tempting seafood and gracious accommodations. Resort areassuch as Hilton Head, South Carolina, are less than one hour awayand provide even more relaxing getaway options.

Whether it’s the lure of historical settings, the friendliness of asouthern community or the beautiful climate of southeast Georgia,Savannah is the place for you.
