2004 BOSTON COLLEGE TRACK & FIELD MEDIA GUIDE

2003-2004 WOMEN’S PREVIEWEntering the2003-04campaign, theBoston Collegewomen’s trackand field teamreturns three All-Americans andnine of 10athletes who setnew schoolstandards lastyear. HeadCoach RandyThomas, whobegins his 11th

year as director ofthe men’s andwomen’sprograms, believeshe has shaped abalanced rosterwith a plethora ofpeak performerswho will nodoubt competeacross the board.

Once again, thedistance eventswill be the Eagles’strongest area. These resilientrunners areheaded by fiveseniors and a trioof All-Americans.Co-captain Jennifer Donovan, who hit anNCAA Provisional Qualifying time in 2003for the third year in a row, achieved All-America status competing in the 3,000-metersteeplechase. By clocking a time of 10:04.02,Donovan established a new school standarden route to a ninth-place finish (sixth amongAmericans) at the 2003 NCAA Champion-ships in Stanford, Calif.

Fellow classmate and 5,000-meter All-American Julie Spolidoro is the reigning BIGEAST 5,000-meter champion and all-timeschool record holder in that event.

Two-time All-American Maria Cicero, whoreceived the accolade in cross country as wellas the 10,000-meter race, currently holds theschool record in the 10,000-meter run with atime of 33:53.86, which snapped a 17-year-old standard.

The distance runners will also rely upon theleadership and experience of senior co-captain Jennifer Kramer, one of the mostversatile runners on the team. At one point

last year she participated in the1,000, 1,500, mile, 3,000,5,000, and distance medleyrelay. Kramer, a cross countryAll-American, was the runner-up in the 800 at the NewEngland Championships andfinished the year ranked thirdall-time at BC in the 1,500with a time of 4:23.56.

Another major contributorwill be senior Laura Smith, aperennial BIG EAST per-former who placed seventh inthe mile at the BIG EASTIndoor Championships.

Providing experience andstability in the middle distanceevents is junior MelissaSherman. Sherman capturedthe 500-meter crown at theNew England Championshipslast season. Sophomores AnneHessberg and Alexis Lake willsupply additional depth.Hessberg captured first placein the 800-meter run at theBU Quadrangle in 2003 andLake earned the top spot inthe 3,000-meter steeplechasewith a time of 11:18.10 at theSCSU Invitational. Also, thecoaching staff hopes forcontributions from Utah’s staterecord holder in the 400 and

800-meter runs, freshman Kathleen Smyth.

Within the multiple event competitors, assistant John Buckley will look to fill the voidleft by BC’s all-time heptathlon record holder,Christina Regan. However, the Eagleswelcome threeexperienced veteransand two highlydecorated freshmen. The multi-eventcompetitors are led byco-captain JulieHeyde (fifth all-timeon BC’s list with4,183 in theheptathlon) andjuniors Liz Hassanand Jackie Tanzella. The duo of Hassanand Tanzella placedfifth and eighth, respectively, at theBIG EAST OutdoorChampionships in2003. Thomas andBuckley also believe

freshmen Kasey Hill, who placed thirdnationally among high school competitors inthe indoor pentathlon last year, and EricaMarcus, a Massachusetts state qualifier in thehurdles, will also provide the Eagles withadded flexibility

In pole vault competition, second-yearassistant coach Dave Counts’ junior-class duoof Saki Sugano and Megan Mara each heldthe title of BC’s all-time record holder lastyear. While Sugano took the outright leadclearing 12 feet at the BIG EAST Champion-ships, Mara matched her classmate’s perfor-mance at the ECAC Championships. TheEagles will also rely on junior Amy Cebulskito have a few breakout performances thisyear.

Sophomore Jessica Fazekas made a splash inher freshman campaign breaking the indoorand outdoor school standards in the shot putin each season’s first event. She achieved anNCAA qualifying mark with her second-place toss of 45-10 ∫ at the UNH Invita-tional.

In the sprint/hurdle area, senior KatinaMcCrory is the team’s top returnee in the200 and 400 and also holds the second-highest mark in the long jump all-time atBC.

This year’s indoor and outdoor schedules arehighlighted by the conference champion-ships, which will be held at SyracuseUniversity during the indoor season andRutgers during the outdoor season. Duringboth the indoor and outdoor seasons, BostonCollege will compete at the New Englandand ECAC Championships. 2004 BOSTON COLLEGE TRACK & FIELD MEDIA GUIDE

2003-2004 MEN’S PREVIEWThe success themen’s track andfield squad aimsto attain in 2004will be based onquality leadershipfrom savvyveterans and theperformance of atalented crop ofnewcomers. Atthe forefront ofthe Eagles’ questfor success thisseason are seniorcaptains PatFilice, KeithNormant andShawn Wallace.Head CoachRandy Thomas, along withassistants JohnBuckley, DaveCounts, John Mortimer and Erin O’Reilly, know their selection as captains is as much atribute to their individual success, as atestament to the caliber of teammate each hasproven to be. The trio will not only fuel theteam with an edge, but also provide a teamapproach to a sport focused primarily onindividual accomplishment.

While the Eagles look to fill the void left bydistance runner Vernon Mickle, Thomas andMortimer will turn to a number of seasonedveterans and a solid group of young athletescompeting in the distance events. At the corewill be a good group of returning performers.Senior Byron Gartrell and juniors DrewBouchard and Adrian Anderson will provideconsistent scoring in the 5,000-meter runand vie for strong performances in champi-onship competition. Gartrell is an All-BIGEAST selection in the 5,000-meter outdoorrun while Anderson owns BC’s fastest time in2003 in the 3,000-meter run, and Bouchardearned the eighth seed in that event at the2003 BIG EAST Indoor Championships.

Wallace, the two-time tri-captain andWakefield, Mass. native, is the Eagles’ topreturnee in middle distance events. Specializ-ing in the mile, Wallace owns a third-placefinish at the New England Championshipswhere he ran a career-best time of 3:53.90.He will, no doubt, be a reliable contributorfor the Eagles in middle-distance events thisyear.

Junior Trevor Rozier-Byrd provides theEagles with another excellent middle-distancerunner. The Freehold, N.J. product is a BIGEAST outdoor qualifier in the 3,000-meter

steeplechase. Rozier-Byrd turned in theEagles’ best time in the 1,500-meterrun last winter and owns the second-best time in the 1,000-meter run in2003, just three seconds behindsophomore teammate AnthonyCalabro. As a freshman, Calabrocaptured first in the 1,000-meter run atthe BU Tri-Meet and claimed fifth inthat event at the New EnglandChampionships. Junior Dan MacIsaacwill also be called upon to provide solidperformances in the 800-meter run.He ran BC’s second-fastest time(1:55.49) in 2003 in that event at theTerrier Invitational indoor competitionlast year.

The Eagles also have high hopes forfreshmen Mark Alizzi and StephenWalsh, who look to step right into themix in the distance events. Walsh was atwo-time state champion in the 1,500mwhile Alizzi, a two-time New York State

cross country county champion, is heralded asone of the best distance high school runners inthe country in 2003.

Normant, the senior tri-captain and BC’s all-time record holder in the 500-meter run, heads up a young but talented group ofsprinters. He gives the Eagles experiencedleadership in the 400-meter events and thetriple jump. At last year’s Brown Invitational,Normant blew the competition away, finishingthe 400 in 55.96, almost 2.5 seconds ahead ofthe runner-up. Also a versatile athlete,Normant is a BIGEAST Indoor qualifierin the triple jump andtook seventh place atthe New EnglandChampionshipsleaping a career best45-7 ˘.

The Eagles will alsorely on the return oftalented juniors GeoffAtkins and AshleyJefferson, who look toimprove upon alreadysuccessful sophomoreindoor and outdoorcampaigns. Atkins, a2003 BIG EASTqualifier, earned topoutdoor performancesfor Boston College lastseason in the 100, 200and 400-meter dasheswhile Jefferson setindividual season-bestmarks in the 55 and

60-meter dashes. Jefferson, also a multi-eventcompetitor, qualified for the 2003 BIG EASTIndoor Championships in the triple jumpand will provide depth and be a solid scorerin the long jump as well.

The Eagles will also rely on a decorated duoof freshmen in the 200 and 400-meter events.Tom Wehr captured two individual 400-meter Connecticut State Championships andhigh school records in the 100-meter dashand 400 while fellow freshman ChrisCaulfied was a two-time All-Hudson Countyselection at St. Peter’s Prep and holds the highschool’s record in the 400-meter run.

The multi-event competitors are headed byjunior Ryan Sullivan, who qualified for theBIG EAST Championships in indoor andoutdoor competition last year and looks toimprove upon his successful sophomorecampaign. The Tewksbury, Mass. native heldthree Boston College top performances lastspring. His season-best time of 7.93 in the55-meter hurdles was tops for BC last yearwhile his performance in the 60-meterhurdles at the BIG EAST Indoor Champion-ships earned him the top time for the Eaglesas well. Sullivan cleared 6’4.00” in highjump competition at the Terrier Cup toestablish three season-best marks in indoorcompetition last season.

Sophomore David Lucia is the Eagles’ topreturning thrower while senior tri-captainFilice gives the Eagles added leadership in thethrows events. Lucia was the top performer

in the shot put, weightthrow and discus as afreshman and Filice hasbeen four-year letterwinner and dependablescorer in the throwsevents.

The men’s squad willshowcase its talent atindoor and outdoor BIGEAST conferencechampionships, whichwill be held at SyracuseUniversity during theindoor season andRutgers during theoutdoor season. Duringboth seasons, BostonCollege will alsocompete at the IC4AChampionships whilethe outdoor portion willshowcase the Eagles atthe Raleigh andPennsylvania Relays.
