Our health food industry is currentlyunder serious threat from two EUdirectives, the Food SupplementsDirective (FSD) and the TraditionalHerbal Medicinal Products Directive(THMPD). These aim to limit thenumber of vitamins and other foodand herbal supplements which willbe allowed, to limit them to singlepreparations thus banning allvitamin, mineral and herbal mixtures, and to seriously reduce the allowabledosages. These directives purport tobe in the mane of consumerprotection. They are not.

The safe, effective natural foodsupplements which these cripplingdirectives seek to drive from themarket place are, in many instances, natural, essential components of ourbodies, substances which, inprevious centuries, we obtained fromour food, but which are no longerpresent in most food because ofchemicalised agriculture, long-termfood storage and food processingand manufacturing.

IT’S NOT TOO LATEThe EU directives aim to reducethese essential body components tothe level of pharmaceutical drugs, byapplying to them the same stringentrules as apply, quite rightly, to thesepotentially toxic substances. This isobviously nonsensical. How can youtreat natural components of the bodyas if they were toxic pharmaceuticaldrugs? It is not too late to campaignto protect these vital health-enhancing products. The health ofour country is already severelycrippled and the NHS is collapsingunder the burden of ill health. If thesedirectives become law in Ireland andthe UK, not only will the small

healthfood shops and independentvitamin and herbal manufacturers goout of business, thereby removingmillions of pounds per year for theeconomy, but the average person willno longer be able to takeresponsibility for his or her health, and will be doomed to rely on thetoxic pharmaceuticals which somany of us are at pains to avoid.

Sheila has been very occupied infighting the current EU directives infood supplements, we can all helpher and ourselves by writing to: The Rt. Hon. Tony Blair PrimeMinister 10 Downing StreetLondon SW1A 2AA

Below are exerpts from Sheila’sown letter to the Prime Minister.

Dear Mr. Blair,

“I write to you as a medical practitioner andspecialist in complementary medicine of many years standing. Together withmany of my colleagues and patients, I am deeply concerned about theimplications of the current EU directives on FSD and THMPD. These twodirectives are attempting to put essential components of our bodies into thesame category as toxic man-made pharmaceutical drugs. This is patentlyillogical, unscientific and insane.”

“Scotland in particular is called the "Sick Man of Europe". We get far lesssunshine, we have a relatively unpleasant cold, damp climate, our soils arehighly depleted and we do not have glacial melt waters to replenish our traceelements. A large majority of our populabon subsists on highly processed, devitalised foods. Many health professionals, largely those of thecomplementary persuasion, remedy this situation, as do many patientsthemselves, by taking vitamin, mineral and other nutritional supplements. Ifthese sources of health improvement and maintenance are to be denied tous, the ensuing increased burden of ill-health will fall on the already crippledNational Health Service.”

“In the interests of the health of this nation, I urge you to ensure that allthese natural. essential nutrients are removed from these two EU directives, where they do not belong. Do you wish to be remembered as the PrimeMinister who signed away his nation's health?”

She hasrecently been using Bi-Aura Therapyon a group of children at anorphanage run by Sister JosephinePurcell in Bolivia. We don’t have thestory about her stay yet, but here isthe background. The kids are agedbetween 2 and 14, all have sufferedterribly and have never experienceda stable time in their short lives. Sr.Josephine recognised that the largerorphanage institutions, whilst doingtheir utmost, were unable to helpchildren develop roots or their ownidentity, and they had no place theycould call ‘home’. A ‘home’ was foundand now 23 kids, including brothersand sisters from 5 families who hadnever even lived together and hardlyknew each other if at all, are finallygetting on with a family life. Jan’sstory will appear on her return. Untilthen we wish them all well.

A FEW NOTES &requests from maire

First of all hi to everyone and I do hope you are all in good form, happy andbusy. On this occasion, as you have seen we have lots to report, and by theresponse from you all it's great to see so many of our members so active.

WORKING TOGETHER AS A TEAM.It is essential that we all work together, this is one of the reasons we set upthe Foundation. It is only by sharing our ideas and passing on referrals to eachother that the Foundation will grow in strength and numbers.I am so pleased to report that within the space of 2 years our membership hasgrown to almost 100 practitioners and naturally we receive lots of interestingsuggestions from many of you. One idea which has come up many times is -When members receive media exposure in magazines, newspapers, radio or T.V. please, please try to include the Foundation contact phonenumber and web site address. There are several very good reasons for this:-1. We, in the Foundation office have the resources to distribute information onBi-Aura Therapy.2. Sadly, by putting in an individual number it gives the impression that it is a'one man band'.3. Any article will cover a huge area of interest, and if people see there is onlyone private contact number it will certainly not have the same impact asincluding the Foundation phone number which by implication, will cover thewhole of the U.K.4. It is only by experience that we have discovered this, for example, when wehad an article in the Sunday Post, although it was a Scottish newspaper, wereceived interest from Scottish folk living all over the U.K.6. It must be said that any practitioner who has the opportunity to gain mediaexposure would, of course, receive any referrals that came through our phonenumbers. Some clients may, however, have special needs, e.g. home visits, which some practitioners do not offer - in these cases we would pass them onto an alternative practitioner.7. Finally, some of our practitioners have received tremendous publicity butalso alarm bells are ringing! There have been hugh inaccuracies in somearticles, whose fault it is at this stage is not relevant, but from now on pleasecheck with HQ before finalising a story with journalists, as there are severalguidelines which must be followed.

Our delightful and most talented Zoe Alexander will be going over to Irelandand travelling to London to run a corporate one day for our practitioners. Please do get in touch ASAP as to how many will be interested. Please don'tlet this slip, as we feel it is a most important day for many of our members.

Yes, without a doubt, the highlight of the year for everyone. Again, we havebooked the delightful and very popular Carberry Towers in Edinburgh. A datefor all your diaries. The weekend of October 3,4 & 5 2003.

Come on you Irish team! How about putting together a venue! Elfriede McNamera very kindly sent me some details and it sounds lovely. It's a place inCo. Wicklow called The Glencree (Tel 01282 9711 ) looks absolutely perfectfor us, so how about a volunteer going to have a look? Karen Gold very kindlyis moving on that front. Do give her a ring on 086 8277660 with anysuggestions or ideas or call the office and we’ll pass them on to her.

E X H I B I T I O NS TAND MANNING We need practitioners to help withour stands at the following showsthat are coming up soon:THE HEALING FESTIVAL23/24/25 August - LondonEXPO EXHIBITION23/24 November - LondonThis is a great opportunity to gainexperience of working in this type ofenvironment, so give me a call if youare interested. Some thank you’s.First of all to The Daily Mail’s LeslieGibson for a truly fantastic feature. What excitement! It has buzzed thefoundation in all directions creating47,000 data requests on the websiteand over 2,500 phone calls, not tomention hundreds of e-mails. Wehave been able to refer about 80% ofthe requests for treatment topractitioners, some of whom are nowbooked until September, and areplanning 4 day clinics where there isa need (just like the old days!) Also to Zoe for her own mediarelation skills in getting suchcoverage in Scotland and last but notleast to Eunice Goodwin for all herbrilliant work in producing theevaluation forms so necessary to ourfuture. The President of the BCMA(who is now an honorary member ofBi-Aura Foundation) was soimpressed that Eunice has beeninvited, (and has accepted) aninvitation to speak at this year’sB C M A annual conference. A l s othanks to Dan Kahn and Jean Li KamTin for constructing the new websitewhich we all agree looks veryprofessional. Finally, a million thanks to Lynne forher great contribution to The Bi-AuraFoundation and congratulations onher leap forward - she is gettingreferrals from the veterinary world.T h a t ’s it for now, have a greatsummer and we’ll see you soon!

ADVANCED TRAINING FOR EDINBURGH

clinical governanceCAM we supply theE V I D E N C E ?Firstly, can I thank all the therapistsat the advanced training weekend fortheir generosity and participation.

The evaluation form I havedeveloped is now in use in Ayrshireand through my dayjob activities, andwe want everyone in the foundationto participate fully.I have recently attended a seminar inLondon where the issue was clinicalgovernance for CAMS in primarycare. For those who are not exposedto this jargon, it is self-regulation of akind. Setting standards andmeasuring them, looking atoutcomes and benefits to the patient.Ensuring best practice based onevidence.

CAM is very much being discussedat several forums, notably:• The above seminar, that hadrepresentation from people whoregularly communicate with To n yBlair.• At a newly formed group - The

forum for integrating CAMs into theNHS in Scotland.• The Scottish Parliament PublicPetitions Committee as a result ofPetition PE571 on 3 Dec 2002• By the BMA, who were asked bythe Scottish Parliaments PublicPetitions Committee as a result ofPetition PE57. This calls on theScottish Parliament to introducelegislation that would require HealthBoards in Scotland to integrate andimplement the recommendationsfrom the 1996 report by the NationalMedical Advisory Committee onComplementary Medicine and theNHS.

There are already 5 complementarytherapies accepted within the NHS tosome extent. Bi-Aura will never beone of them unless we get evidence.Clinical governance is an evidence-based approach. It is not enough thatthe clients and ourselves can see thebenefits, we must demonstrate thisto others. The easiest place to start

Bi-Aura Foundation • Newsletter • May 2003

evaluation in CAM is with clientsatisfaction and demonstration ofbenefits to their health. This is mademore powerful with large volumes ofinformation.

The evaluation forms and summaryevaluation forms are available on theBi-Aura web site. It is likely that I willbe arranging a database for theresults and facilitating the formdistribution for those of you not on e-mail.

If we want to put Bi-Aura on the map,and benefit everyone, we mustevaluate what we are doing and tellpeople about it. It will also help us tomove into the NHS sector. This canprovide endless opportunities ofwork.

This is an exciting time for CAM butwe must be in it to win it. For furtherinformation, please contact theFoundation. Thanks, Eunice

A LETTER FROM ASENIOR THERAPIST

I trained as a Bio-Energy therapist in 1996 having previously trained as ageneral and occupational health nurse and midwife. Following the completionof the course in Bio-Energy, I began to work in clinics in the U.K. and Ireland.I began to work from home, initially treating friends, neighbours, relatives andacquaintances for free, just to gain experience and confidence. Over the pastfew years, my work with energy has become a full time job; working fromhome, overheads are kept to a minimum. I still treat some people at no costthere, if either they have no resources or just cannot afford the full amount. Ialways begin with 4 consecutive days, and then follow up sessions at regularintervals. I charge £25 per single session.I have never advertised, my work is all by word of mouth.

Hi Everyone,It seems ages since I met up withMaire, Linny, Ann and the gang atGmex last year. My family have keptme very busy since then but I havestill managed to keep up with my Bi-Aura clients.I have had calls from Wr e x h a m ,S h r e w s b u r y, Stockport andBirmingham from the Web Site.I don't turn any of the clients down asI use the contacts to get groups togive little demonstrations and talks tospread the word.I have a clinic day at a chemist inNewcastle under Lyme on a Tuesdayand on Wednesdays I have a roomwith a healing group in the markettown of Leek. I have the room thereon Thursday nights, I have a stallwith a country fair in Hartington in thePeak district. I use it to advertise myBi-Aura Therapy but do it under thedisguise of a craft stall.I have found it very beneficial to beinvolved with other therapists whoorganise these events. Once theyknow they can rely on your support, itgets your name about as a therapistand for new venues that crop up. Iran my own fair last October in myvillage hall here in Brown Edge. Theweather was absolutely atrocious butwe had a brilliant day. I had twentytherapists and stall holders - alloffering something different for thepublic to try. It must have gone downwell as they all want to come backthis year. This week I am in a localhotel 7 p.m. - 11p.m. followed by theChatsworth House Fair in two weekstime. My philosophy is if I keep outand about telling everyone about Bi-Aura, people will want to try thetherapy and then find out how good itis and spread the word.Bright blessings - Linda Lea

Marjorie Stirrat writes:Norwell Clinic has been open foralmost two years and we haveevolved very quickly in the past year. Our focus has changed and is nowalmost entirely energy therapies. Bi-Aura being a major therapy alongwith Thought Field Therapy.Part funded by Tayside police forcewe are working in Dundee and Perthwith drug and alcohol users and wehave just heard that a ‘personcentred’ room is being created inDundee where we may work for twodays a week if we wish. Anotherbreakthrough is Perth prison wherewe are working with staff for one daya week for the next six weeks and mythanks go to Michael for teaching ushow to focus on shorter sessions andto Lynne for the stress techniquesshown to us on the corporate day. Both are invaluable for the work inthe prison. John worked with a localcompany and they have agreed tosend their staff to us for therapies, quite an accolade and our firstcorporate experience. Our privateclients are steady and so as you cansee Norwell Clinic is thriving andgoing from strength to strength.Marjorie StirratNorwell Clinic, Perth Aerodrome,Scotland
