The Citadel’s women’s cross country team is poised to have a breakout season in 2006 as two talented seniors and a trio of stellar sopho-mores return and are paired with three highly touted freshmen runners. The team is coming off an incredibly successful 2005 season and could surpass that this fall. “Our women had a really good 2005 sea-son and I’m very excited about this fall,” said head coach Jody Huddleston, who is entering his 21st year at The Citadel. “They have shown tremendous improvement. We have a great base of runners returning this fall, led by seniors Laura Hewston and Amanda Rawl.” Hewston, a native of Summerville, S.C., was the team’s No. 1 runner in 2004 and was challenged by a trio of f reshmen r u n n e r s last fall. Rawl was the track t e a m ’ s Most Im-proved Ath-lete in 2006 and has had a good s u m m e r full of train-ing. She is poised to have a good fall season. A trio of girls, who had a p h e n o m -enal fall 2005 sea-son in their knob year, joins Hewston and Rawl in leading the 2006 squad on the course. “I expect Megan [Jenkins] to be our No. 1 runner this fall,” said Huddleston. “She, along with Erin Ritter and Sarah Strickland, had a very good track season as all three broke school re-cords. Erin ran 19:10 in the 5k in track season, which was a huge personal record for her. That time was the second fastest 5k ever ran by a Citadel woman. Sarah really blossomed late in the track season and crushed the school record at the SoCon Outdoor Championships in the 3000m Steeplechase.” The Bulldogs open up the season at the South Carolina Invitational on Sept. 1 in Colum-bia. They host the annual Citadel Invitational on Sept. 30 at James Island County Park.

The Citadel’s men’s cross country team is ready to open the 2006 slate and they should be a competitive team within the Southern Conference this year. A trio of strong seniors in Matt Holmes, Charles Kutz and Will Wilson will lead a talented crop of runners this fall. The Bulldogs, who had a tough 2005 season, are ready to get the season un-derway. “We have a good group of seniors this year, a

good group of leaders,” said Hud-d l e s t o n , who is en-tering his 21st year at The Citadel. “ C h a r l e s Kutz, Matt Holmes and Will Wilson are our three seniors this year and they should be our top three run-ners this year. They will get help from juniors Ste-ven Craig and Robert Isaac and f r e s h m e n

Stephen Dickey and Daniel Knight.” Will Wilson was named the Most Outstand-ing Runner for the 2005 season and the Columbia, S.C. native is looking to have a strong 2006 season. Wilson has probably the least experience out of this year’s roster after playing soccer in high school, but has improved exponentially every year he has been at The Citadel. “Will grew up playing soccer and didn’t run much in high school,” said Huddleston. “He even-tually gave up soccer and found out he is a pretty good runner. He finished in the top 10 last year at the Disney Invitational, a meet that had over 300 runners.” Wilson will join fellow seniors Matt Holmes and Charles Kutz in leading the 2006 team. “Charles [Kutz] has really matured and put in a good summer,” said Huddleston. “Physically, he should be able to be competitive. Matt [Holmes] has struggled with injuries the past couple years. We are hoping that he will get past that this year and have a good senior year.” The Bulldogs open up the season at the South Carolina Invitational on Sept. 1 in Columbia. They host the annual Citadel Invitational with the women’s team on Sept. 30 at James Island County Park.

Sixth year the Citadel (2000)

Entering his 21st year at The Citadel, head cross country and track and field coach Jody Huddleston continues to lead one of the most successful programs at The Citadel and in the Southern Conference. Huddleston’s tenure has seen 48 conference champions, 184 All-Southern Conference honors bestowed, the first woman to compete in athletics at The Citadel, the first woman to win a conference championship at The Citadel and the first woman to compete in an NCAA Championship event in school history. Huddleston led the Bulldogs through the historic 2006 track and field seasons, which included then-junior Stephanie McNeill entering the history books on several separate oc-casions and the women’s team doubling their best performance at a conference champion-ship. McNeill set history by becoming the first woman from the Military College of South

Carolina to qualify for an NCAA Championship event, throwing a qualifying mark of 47’ 9” in the shot put. McNeill won her flight in the shot put at the NCAA Regional Championships with a throw of 46’ 10.25” as she finished 15th overall. The women’s team finished sixth at the SoCon Outdoor Championships with a school record 48 team points scored. Huddleston, along with assistant coach Kris Kut, coached McNeill as she won the 2006 Southern Confer-ence discus title with a throw of 141’ 2”, making her the first female cadet to win a SoCon Championship. Those accomplishments, along with regional and national media exposure, came in a 2006 track and field season that saw 22 school records broken, 19 athletes receiving All-Conference honors, three SoCon Athlete of the Week honors, two conference champions and two conference superlative honors. Moreover, McNeill was named the SoCon’s Outstanding Field Performer and freshman Shaquill Smith was tabbed as Freshman of the Year after he won the high jump, placed fifth in the triple jump as he set a new freshman school record (47’ 4.25”) and placed eighth in the long jump. Huddleston’s program first broke into the national headlines in the fall of 1997 when Mandy Garcia be-came the school’s first-ever female cadet-student-athlete and attracted unprecedented national media exposure as she set history. Garcia served as the lone member of the women’s cross country, indoor track and outdoor track “team” that year. Two years later, Peaches Hudson took second in the heptathlon and captured the institu-tion’s first female All-Southern Conference honor. Huddleston came to The Citadel from Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Okla., where he served as head coach for seven years. In 1984, he earned NAIA District IX Coach of the Year honors. Earlier that year, the Bison finished second at the league championships, the best track performance for the school in 10 years. An All-America decathlete at Florida Community College, Huddleston set a new national junior college de-cathlon long jump record in 1975. He transferred to South Alabama and went on to establish two school records. Huddleston graduated from South Alabama in 1977 with a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education. He earned a master’s degree in education two years later at that same institution. Huddleston has tgree children, Ryan (21) and Callie (16) and he and his wife, Mary Ellen, have one daughter, Mary Kathryn (21 months).

Kris Kut enters his seventh year as a coach at The Citadel, his first in a full-time coaching status. Along with Jody Huddleston, Kut has been on staff during the track and field programs through the past several years and has watched from the sidelines as school records have fallen over and over again. Kut, who focuses mainly on the field events and is the program’s recruiting coordina-tor, has helped coach 12 conference champions during his tenure at The Citadel, including the school’s first female to win a conference championship, Stephanie McNeill. Kut guided McNeill as she also became the first female from The Citadel to qualify and compete in an NCAA Championship event. Under his tutelage, The Citadel’s cadet-student-athletes have won 83 All-Conference honors and numerous school records have fallen, including 22 during

the 2006 season alone. Kut, a 2000 graduate from The Citadel, was a four-year letterwinner at The Military College of South Carolina as he pursued his bachelor’s degree in political science. He remained at the school as he earned his master’s degree in health, exercise and sport science in 2003. A three-time Southern Conference Champion as a cadet-student-athlete, Kut also received four All-Conference honors. He remains the school record holder in the javelin and was a junior national qualifier, competing in the 1997 Junior National Track and Field meet in St. Louis, Mo. As a senior, Kut finished seventh in the javelin at the prestigious Penn Relays, as well as first at several other key meets. Born Jan. 20, 1978, Kut married the former Holly Jones of Mechanicsville, Va., in 2003. They cur-rently reside in Mount Pleasant, S.C., with their two-year old son Andre Jackson and their three-month old son Preston.

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is a unique public institution with the mission of educating principled leaders through its Corps of Cadets and College of Graduate and Profes-sional Studies program.

Located in historic Charleston, S.C., The Citadel offers under-graduate and graduate degrees in the humanities, business, math, science, engineering and educa-tion. The Citadel’s reputation for academic excellence is reinforced by annual rankings from U.S. News & World Report that place The Citadel as number two in pub-lic colleges granting master’s de-grees in the South. The engineer-ing school is nationally ranked at number 27.

With an enrollment of more than 1,900, the Corps of Cadets is the nation’s largest military college program outside the service acad-emies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 percent of the grad-uating seniors earn military com-missions. The remaining gradu-ates attend graduate school or enter the job market.

The College of Graduate and Pro-fessional Studies, which is noted for Citadel excellence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,200 residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Academic programs at the col-lge are complimented by a strong commitment to service and em-phatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of gradu-ates who have served their nation, their professions and their com-munities with distinction.
