HEAD COACH DEREK ARMSTRONG

Ted Van Arsdale enters his 15th season at the helm of the UC San Diego cross country program in 2006. After developing a program which gained national recognition at the NCAA Division III level, Van Arsdale has faced and successfully overcome many new challenges over the last five years, leading the men’s and women’s teams to a higher level in Division II.

In 2001, Van Arsdale led the Triton men’s team to a fourth straight third-place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, and the women’s team to a fifth-place CCAA finish. At the Division II West Regional, UCSD was fourth in the men’s division, earning a first-ever team trip to the Division II Nationals, and 12th in the women’s race. The Triton men capped one of the top seasons in the program’s history by finishing 15th at the NCAA National Meet in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania.

In 2002, it was the turn of the UCSD women to qualify for Nationals, making their first appearance ever at the NCAA Division II National Championships and finishing 17th at the meet in Ashland, Ohio, under snowy conditions. Van Arsdale’s Tritons produced their first Division II All-American, as senior Audrey Sung finished 19th overall. On their way to the National Meet, the UCSD women put together a fourth-place finish at the CCAA Championships and a third-place showing at the West Regional. The Triton men duplicated their fourth-place effort at the West Regional from the previous two years, but were narrowly denied a repeat trip to the National Meet. The men also finished fourth as a team in the CCAA.

2003 marked the first time at the D-II level that both programs qualified for the NCAA National Championships in the same season. The teams each finished second in the West Region after the women took second place in the CCAA, while the men finished third at the league championships. While at the NCAA Championships in Cary, N.C., the Triton women finished 16th in the country while also having their second-ever All-America selection as freshman Tina Firouz garnered the accolade for her 34th place finish. The men finished 15th in the nation senior Julian Nahan was the first UCSD runner to cross the line, finishing 45th overall.

The 2004 season provided a new challenge for UCSD as both the men and women were vying for a return trip to the NCAA National Championships. The women attained its goal of qualifying for the NCAA Division II meet with its second place finish at the West Regional only two weeks after finishing second at the CCAA Championships. The women ended the year with a 17th place finish at the D-II Championships. The men came up just short of qualifying for the event after a fourth place finish at the West Regional and a third place finish at the league champi-onships.

Entering the 2005 season with high expectations, Van Arsdale once again guided his squads to suc-cessful campaigns. The women posted their best-ever finish at the NCAA Championships, finishing seventh after finishing second at the NCAA West Regional and first at the CCAA Championships. Senior Mimi Hodgins earned CCAA and NCAA West Region Runner of the Year honors while also garnering All-America status along with sophomore Emily McGregor. The UCSD men once again finish third at the CCAA Championships before a seventh place finish at the NCAA West Regional brought an end to their season.

Before the move to Division II in the fall of 2000, Van Arsdale had established UCSD cross country as the top Division III program in the West and one of the nation’s most respected clubs. In 1998, he guided the men’s cross country team to its fifth consecutive NCAA Division III West Regional championship and seventh straight appearance at Nationals, and in 1999, the women’s team qualified for the Division III National Championships for the first time in six years, capturing the West Region title and finishing second in the CCAA.

Van Arsdale has been honored by his coaching peers on several occasions, winning nine Regional Cross Country Coach of the Year awards along with two CCAA Coach of the Year awards. He earned UCSD’s Excellence in Coaching Award for 1994-95. During his tenure as head coach of the UCSD track and field programs, Van Arsdale was selected Regional Track and Field Coach of the Year on three occasions and coached 13 All-American distance runners, including three 5,000-meter champions. He continues to assist with the track and field program at UCSD, directing all events from 800 to 10,000 meters.

Van Arsdale has been involved with UCSD since 1989, when he took over Masters running, a high-performance running program that puts out many national contenders and is one of the best adult competitive teams in California. Prior to coming to UCSD, Van Arsdale coached for three years at San Diego Mesa College. In his second year, he guided the men to a fourth-place finish in the state, their best finish ever. Van Arsdale also has been involved with the Jim Busch Sports Camp for seven years and directs a summer camp for high school teams on the UCSD campus. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education from Point Loma Nazarene College.

2005 MXC YEAR IN REVIEW

Returning for his 14th season at the helm of the cross country program, Coach Ted Van Arsdale hoped to continue the improvements the Triton men’s squad had shown since making the move from Division III five years ago. With a strong core of experienced seniors and a nice mix of impact newcomers, the team made strides after finishing fourth in the NCAA West Regionals one year ago. The team sustained their performance at the CCAAs, while also providing high points in the season with two team wins at home.

The UCSD men’s cross country team started its season off on the right foot with a win at their home course on August 27th. Senior Luke Sigmon paced the men with a time of 22:32.1 on the four-mile course, finishing one-tenth of a second faster than teammate and fellow senior Chris Beetley-Hagler. The Tritons, in fact, held the top six places, with senior Carl Lostrom, junior Dan Holligan, freshman Gabriel LaMothe, and sophomore Evan Tamura all finishing before the first non-UCSD runner.

The cross country squad followed up their home debut with a fifth-place showing at the UC Irvine Invitational on September 10th. It was Lostrom this time leading the team, finishing in 10th place with a time of 23:11.9 and Luke Sigmon finishing second for the Tritons, 14 seconds after Lostrom in 18th place. Beetley-Hagler, Holligan, and Tamura also again earned points for the Triton squad, finishing 29th, 30th, and 42nd, respectively.

Returning to the UCSD cross country course for their second and final home meet of the season on October 8th, the Triton men again defended their territory, winning their division with an average time of 26:39.56 for the 8k race. The senior triumvirate of Lostrom, Sigmon, and Beetley-Hagler again led UCSD, with Lostrom finishing first among Division II participants and ninth overall with a time of 26:14.1. Sigmon finished third in DII and 13th overall with his time of 26:32.2, while Beetley-Hagler was the third fastest Triton on the day with a time of 26:46.1, placing fourth in the Division II ranks and 18th overall. LaMothe finished close behind with a time of 26:48.1, coming in fifth in the division and 20th overall.

UCSD used the momentum from their win at home and parlayed it into a third-place finish at the CCAAs. The Triton senior trio all placed within the top-15, earning all-CCAA honors. Lostrom paced the team for the fourth straight meet, placing 10th overall with a time of 25:29, while Sigmon and Beetley-Hagler finished 14th and 15th with times of 25:56 and 25:58, respectively.

The UCSD men’s cross country team finished their 2005 season with a 7th place finish at the NCAA West Regionals at Chino Hills on November 5th as Gabriel LaMothe provided a glimpse of the future, finishing as the top overall UCSD individual runner in 38th place with a time of 34:37.2, 2.3 seconds in front of the Tritons’ second finisher. Lostrom finished in 39th, while freshmen Jake LeVieux and Matthew Noble were close behind, finishing in 40th place and 43rd place, respectively. Holligan rounded out the scoring of the 10k race for the Tritons with a time of 34:54.8, finishing in 47th place. Beetley-Hagler and Sigmon concluded their successful seasons and careers coming in at 56th and 59th place, respectively.

With four seniors departing the team, Coach Ted Van Arsdale will now look to use the strength of his returners along with new recruits to continue the improvement of the UCSD men’s cross country team next season.

2005 WXC YEAR IN REVIEW

The 2005 season proved an astonishing accomplishment for the members of the women’s cross country team. Under the leadership of Coach Ted Van Arsdale, who would go onto win CCAA Coach of the Year honors, and with Mimi Hodgins holding nothing back during her last year on the Triton team, UCSD took a huge leap among Division II schools, competing with tenacity and ascending to new heights of success.

The women’s cross country team started their tremendous campaign with a season opening victory on August 27th on the UCSD cross country course. They would again defend their home territory on October 8th with another win. Senior Mimi Hodgins finished first overall in both races, besting the next fastest runner by an average of 23 seconds

The Triton’s season continued at the UC Irvine Invitational where the squad again finished in the upper tier, coming in fourth of 17 teams competing in the meet. Hodgins again led the way with a second place overall finish and a time of 18:26.9. Sophomore Diane Dunn was the next highest UCSD finisher, completing the course with a time of 19:07.7, good for 20th place.

The women’s cross country team had another impressive finish at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, coming in 11th of the 47 participating schools, many of which were Division I participants. Equally impressive was Mimi Hodgins finish in 17th place out of 309 individuals with a time of 21:08.2. All seven Triton runners who competed finished in the upper half of the 6k race.

On October 22nd at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco the UCSD women’s cross country team reached a high point in winning their second CCAA title all-time. Hodgins, fresh off being named CCAA runner of the week, continued her dominance of the season by finishing as the top individual runner in the women’s 6k race with a time of 21:31, more than 30 seconds faster than her closest competitor. Hodgins was named CCAA Runner of the Year after her performance, while Coach Ted Van Arsdale was named CCAA Coach of the Year. Hodgins was joined on the All-CCAA squad by Nina Miller, Erin O’Donnell, Emily McGregor and Dunn, as each finished in the top-10 in the 6k race. The UCSD team average of 22:06.8 was 25 seconds better than second place finisher Chico State, who bested the Tritons at the CCAA Championships last year.

Two weeks later on November 5th in Chino Hills, the Triton women earned a berth in the NCAA Division-II Championships with a second-place finish in the NCAA D-II West Regionals. Hodgins finished first overall for an incredible third race in a row and fourth time on the season with a time of 21:59.8, besting Chico State’s Katie Lee by 2.1 seconds. The top-5 runners for UCSD all finished in the top-20, with O’Donnell crossing the finish line in seventh place with a time of 22:30. McGregor, senior Michelle DiMeo, and Miller finished in 15th, 19th, and 20th place, respectively.

The Tritons ended their season with the same mix of determination and success that they had demonstrated throughout the year, finishing 7th in the NCAA Division-II Championships, earning their best team finish in the Championships. The team moved up 10 places from last year and nine places from their previous all-time best. Hodgins, as she had done all season, paced the Tritons, finishing with a time of 22:14 in the final race of her Triton career, coming in 23rd out of 186 runners. McGregor was the second UCSD runner to finish, with her time of 22:34.5 putting her in 35th place, with O’Donnell also placing in the top-50 with a time of 22:44.2 in 44th place. Hodgins and McGregor became only the second and third All-Americans in UCSD’s Division II history.

UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Earl W. Edwards - Director of AthleticsEarl W. Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March, 2000. Under his guidance, the 23-sport program has made a successful transition from the NCAA Division III to Division II. In fact, UCSD has surpassed all expectations in Division II, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001, and finishing in the top-10 of the Director’s Cup standings in four of its first five seasons.

Edwards’ move to UC San Diego represented a homecoming, as he had previously served as Associate Athletic Director at UCSD from 1987 to 1993. He then took a position as Director of Athletics at East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. During his seven-year tenure at the NCAA Division II institution, he served on numerous NCAA committees, including a 1999 appointment to the Division II Management Council. Edwards is also currently a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Executive Committee.

Edwards is a 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a master’s degree in Physical Education and Sports Administration from the University of Massachusetts. In addition to East Stroudsburg, he has athletic administration experience at UMass, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, Drexel University and UC San Diego. While previously serving at UCSD, Edwards initiated the Triton Athletic Associates, the athletic department’s primary fund-raising source. Edwards now presides over a UC San Diego program which is recognized nationally for both its athletic and academic achievements.

A Proud Tradition of Academic and Athletic Excellence!

• Triton teams have captured 29 National Championships while 35 teams have finished as National Runners-Up. 33 others have achieved National Third Place honors.

• Individually, 110 Triton student-athletes have captured National Championships and a remarkable 850 student-athletes have been named to All-America teams.

• UCSD student-athletes have excelled academically as well, earning 21 prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships and 127 Academic All-America selections. Consistently, over 55 percent of the student-athletes earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, placing them on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

• UCSD was awarded the 1998 Sears Directors’ Cup for NCAA Division III, recognizing the nation’s top overall athletic program. Since moving to Division II in 2000, the Tritons have finished fourth, third, 12th, second, and sixth respectively.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area.

In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years.

Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to find out what special

presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents.

In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last two years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005.

Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.

UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Two integral parts of the UC San Diego athletic department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports.

The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are monitored and planned out by Matt Kritz, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics. Kritz represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room that is over 12,000 square feet in size with state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and first class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletic Department as one of the premier intercollegiate programs in the country.

The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is the hub for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Marcia Klaiber MA, ATC and her staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists. Alongside Klaiber is assistant athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS, who assists in every aspect of the training room.

The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two part-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program where some of the athletic training students fulfill their clinical experience. Additionally the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation.

From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you health and back on the field of competition in no time.

SAN DIEGO - AMERICA’S FINEST CITY

The UCSD campus is located in La Jolla, Calif., just minutes north of America’s sixth largest city, San Diego.

Spanish for ‘the jewel’, La Jolla is one of San Diego’s first neighborhoods to be settled. The city of La Jolla has spectacular beaches and park areas that are popular for great diving, swimming, surfing, hiking, romantic sunset strolls, and family fun. La Jolla’s village area boasts a beautiful Mediterranean charm and a cool Southern Californian vibe, and rolls out the red carpet when it comes to it’s fine dining, theatre, cultural activities, boutique shopping, art galleries and fine lodging establishments. It is no wonder why La Jolla’s Prospect Street was dubbed ‘San Diego’s Rodeo Drive’.

Named “America’s Finest City” due to its hospitality, beauty and ideal climate, San Diego is located at the southern tip of California, just north of Mexico. The residents of San Diego county are so physically active that Sports Illustrated magazine once called it “Sportstown, U.S.A.” San Diego’s 70 miles of beaches are a haven for swimmers, surfers, divers, boaters and sunbathers.

The city of San Diego is a major commercial busi-ness center with more than 2.6 million residents and a varied economy based in agriculture, manufactur-ing, aerospace, technology, electronics, aircraft, ship-building, scientific research and tourism. The city is one of the largest biotech centers in the U.S.
