Schedule / Home Meet Info

2009 HOME MEET INFORMATION

UC San Diego will open the 2009 season with a home meet against Point Loma Nazarene, Cer-ritos College, San Diego Christian College (women only), and Sonoma State (women only) on Saturday, August 29. The women will be running fi rst at 9:00 a.m., navigating a 2.5 mile course and the men will follow at 9:40, traversing across a 4.0 mile area.

The 2009 Triton Classic will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10 with the women running a 6k race, followed by the men at 10:00 on the 10k course. As usual at the Triton Classic, win-ners of each Division (I, II, III, NAIA, and Open) will be announced following the conclusion of all races. Entries for the race can be submitted at UCSDtritons.com.

Course maps for the 6k and 10k races at the Triton Classic are pictured below. The women’s course is on the left, while the men’s layout is on the right.

Coaching Staff

Nathan Garcia enters his third season as head coach of the UC San Diego men’s and women’s cross coun-try programs in 2009.

Garcia took over head coaching duties for both programs in July 2007 after the resignation of longtime coach and mentor Ted Van Arsdale. He served as an assistant under Van Arsdale for fi ve seasons prior to his ap-pointment to the top spot. Garcia also coaches distances events for the UCSD track and fi eld teams.

In his fi rst season in 2007 Garcia guided both the men’s and women’s teams to the NCAA Division II National Championships, marking just the second time UCSD has accomplished that feat at the D-II level. The wom-en’s team fi nished 11th at the championships, having moved up fi ve places from a 16th place fi nish the year before. The men fi nished in the 20th spot, marking their highest fi nish since 2003.

In 2008, he led the women’s team to a sixth place fi nish at the NCAA West Regionals, while the men came in seventh. Redshirt fresh-man Bre Schofi eld advanced to the D-II National Championships in Slippery Rock, Pa., fi nishing 22nd overall, which was UCSD’s best individual fi nish since 2002. Senior Jake LeVieux represented the men’s team, fi nishing 92nd.

Garcia earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from UCSD in 2000, graduating cum laude. He then completed a multi-subject professional clear CLAD credential at UCSD in 2001.

Garcia was a four-year athlete in both cross country and track at UCSD from 1996 to 2000. During his time as a Triton, he earned numerous athletic and academic honors, including Verizon All-Ac-ademic District VIII and CCAA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2000-01. He was also honored by UCSD on National Student-Athlete Day that same year.

Entering her third season as an assistant coach with UCSD’s cross coun-try programs is another former Triton in Lindsay Stalker.

Stalker returns to the sidelines after two very successful campaigns the last two years, including a trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships for both programs in her fi rst season in 2007.

A native of Corona, Calif., Stalker was a four-year letterwinner at UCSD from 2001-04. She earned All-CCAA honors after fi nishing with a personal best time of 22:24 at the conference championships in 2003, helping the

team to a second place fi nish overall. As a senior, Stalker had an impressive showing at the D-II West Re-gional, leading the squad to a second place fi nish after posting a time of 23:43. She earned All-West Region recognition for her performance and the Tritons advanced to the National Championships in Evansville, Ind., where they fi nished 17th.

Stalker was also a two-time All-American in track and fi eld in the 800m and 1500m. She graduated from UCSD in 2005 with a degree in human development.

Joining the Triton coaching staff in 2009 is Amy Hassell. Hassell enters her fi rst season as an assistant at UCSD following a very successful athletic career at Utah State.

Hassell was a four-year letter winner in both cross country and track and fi eld for the Aggies, posting school records in the indoor 800m (2:08.2) and outdoor 1500m (4:25.5). She helped guide the women’s cross country team to a Western Athletic Conference Championship in 2006 and was a USU NCAA Woman of the Year nominee as a senior in 2008. She was also named to the WAC Academic All-Conference team fi ve times.

Hassell graduated in the fall of 2008 with a B.A. in English and a minor in physical education and coaching. She received her Utah Educator’s License in 2008 and earned her preliminary California teaching credential earlier this year.

AS A JUNIOR IN 2008: Injuries limited him to just two events all season… Had a promising start to the year, fi nishing fi fth overall in UCSD’s opener against Point Loma and USD on Aug. 29… Clocked in with a time of 22:32.6… Also ran in the SRU Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 4, placing 42nd overall at 27:10.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2007: Ran in all but one of UCSD’s meets on the year… Was named the Tritons Most Valuable Racer after fi nishing in the Triton’s top fi ve six times on the season… Was the top overall fi nisher in the season-opening dual meet against Point Loma Nazarene with a time of 22:22.9… Crossed the fi nish line fi rst for the Tritons in three straight meets from Sept. 22 through Oct. 20… Led UCSD fi nishers and placed 17th overall at the Bob Firman Invational with a time of 26:05.33… Crossed line with a time of 33:50.5 in the 10k at the Triton Classic, fi nishing 7th overall and fi rst among Tritons… Earned All-CCAA honors after placing 13th overall at the league championships with a mark of 25:40.70… that time was also tops among the UCSD men… Was the fourth Triton to fi nish and came in 30th overall with a time of 32:07.4 at the West Regionals, helping his squad grab the fi nal berth in the NCAA Championships.

AS A JUNIOR IN 2008: Finished among UCSD’s top fi ve in the team’s fi rst fi ve events to start the season… Came in second overall in the season opener against Point Loma and USD, clocking in at 21:51.9… Placed seventh overall and fourth on the squad at the CSUSB Coyotes Invite with a mark of 26:41… Helped the Triton men claim the SRU Pre-National Invite title with a fi fth place fi nish at 25:26… Was UCSD’s top fi nisher with a time of 32:34.0 at the Triton Classic, placing seventh overall.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2007: Made his fi rst appearance of the season at the Bob Firman Invitational in Boise and was the second Triton to fi nish, placing 26th overall with a time of 26:15.26… Was one of UCSD’s top runners from that point forward, fi nishing 13th overall with a time of 34:06.1 at the Triton Classic Invitational two weeks later… After fi nishing 50th at the CCAA’s, he bounced back with a stellar effort at the NCAA West Regionals, fi nishing 24th overall and fi rst among Tritons with a mark of 31:44.53… Was also the fi rst Triton to fi nish at the NCAA Championships in Joplin, Mo., crossing the line with a time of 32:52.7, good enough for 96th out of 187 individual runners… Earned UCSD’s Triton of the Year award at the end of the season for his performance.

AS A JUNIOR IN 2008: Was one of fi ve Tritons to fi nish in the top 10 at the CSUSB Coyotes Invite on Sept. 20, fi nishing sixth overall with a time of 26:40… Had a strong fi nish to the season, placing second on the team and 13th overall at the CCAA Championships in San Bernardino… Clocked in at 26:30.7, which was good enough for a spot on the All-CCAA squad and helped UCSD claim a second place fi nish as a team… Was UCSD’s fi nal scorer at the NCAA West Regional, fi nishing 70th with a time of 37.09.6 on his home course… Finished in the top 40 in three other events.

AS A JUNIOR IN 2008: Had a tremendous close to the season, scoring in UCSD’s fi nal three competitions… His highest fi nish of the year came on his a home course after he placed 19th with a time of 33:40.8 at the Triton Classic… Followed that up with a strong performance at the CCAA Championships, fi nishing 21st at 26:59.3… His time of 35:39.9 at the NCAA West Regional was good enough for third on the team and 45th overall… Finished 25th at the CSUSB Coyotes Invite… Was named the team’s Most Improved Runner at the end of the season.

Men’s Year In Review

The UC San Diego men’s cross country team, under the tutelage of second-year head coach Nate Garcia, opened the 2008 season with team titles in three of their fi rst four meets and went on to post a second place fi nish at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. Opening the year with a No. 3 ranking in the West Region, the Tritons fared well against all competitors with senior Jake LeVieux concluding the season with a 14th place fi nish at West Regionals and an individual invitation and top 100 fi nish at the NCAA National Championships.

Six Triton runners placed in the top ten in the season opening meet at home against Point Loma Nazarene and the University of San Diego. Junior Jesse Morrill fi nished second overall, while LeVieux, Daniel Anderson, and Gabe LaMothe crossed the fi nish line in fi fth, sixth, and seventh place, respectively. Kevin Klein helped complete UCSD’s 22-point victory with an eighth place fi nish.

LeVieux was the top Triton fi nisher in the next three events, the Aztec Invitational, the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Invitational, and the SRU Pre-National Invitational. His second place fi nish in San Bernardino paved the way for UCSD’s second team title of the year. LaMothe and Morrill again were top ten fi nishers, placing fourth and seventh, respectively, while Max Mullender fi nished sixth to help secure the win.

The Tritons followed up their showing at the Coyote Invitational with a second consecutive win, claiming the team title at the SRU Pre-National Invitational in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. Running on the course that would later play host to the NCAA National Championships, LeVieux fi nished fourth overall, marking his third top 10 fi nish of the season, while Morrill followed in fi fth place and LaMothe took eighth.

The team then returned home for the annual Triton Classic with Morrill leading the charge on the 10k course. His time of 32:34.0 was good enough for seventh place out of 81 runners. He fi nished two spots ahead of LeVieux and UCSD went on to place second in the event.

UCSD recorded another runner-up fi nish two weeks later at the CCAA Championships in San Bernardino. Having fi nished third in the conference nine times in the previous 10 years, the Tritons rose to second behind a ninth place fi nish by LeVieux and a 13th place time by Mullender. Both athletes were named to the All-CCAA squad for their efforts. Freshman Jeremy Riley also had a strong showing, fi nishing 17th, while LaMothe and Mike Wright placed 20th and 21st, respectively.

At the NCAA West Regionals, held on the UCSD campus, the Triton men fi nished seventh overall as a team. Failing to qualify for Nationals, Garcia’s squad nonetheless put up a strong showing in a meet won by defending conference and regional champion Chico State. LeVieux fi nished 14th overall individually, claiming All-Region accolades and a trip to the NCAA National Championships in the process. LaMothe was the next fastest Triton runner, just 23 seconds behind LeVieux’s pace.

LeVieux then represented UCSD as an individual at the NCAA Division II National Championships to cap off the season. Returning to Cooper’s Lake Campground, where he had posted a fourth place fi nish less than two months prior, he battled snow and temperatures in the low 20s to clock a 92nd-place time of 33:06 and put the fi nishing touches on a tremendous senior campaign.

Senior Jake LeVieux paced the Triton men six times in 2008 and took home All-Region honors after fi nishing 14th at the NCAA West Regionals on November 8.

Women’s Year In Review

The UC San Diego women’s cross country team had another success-ful season in 2008 and a rookie runner from nearby Carlsbad was at the forefront of that success. Redshirt freshman Bre Schofi eld paced the Tritons in every event last season, helping UCSD win a pair of team titles and take third place at the Californina Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion Championships for the third straight year. Along with teammate Jake LeVieux, Schofi eld went on to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships as an individual, while earning All-CCAA, All-Region, and All-American honors along the way.

Head coach Nate Garcia’s team opened the year with a No. 4 ranking in the West Region and immediately went to work proving they were a top ten squad, defeating Point Loma Nazarene, the University of San Diego, and UNLV at home to open the season. Schofi eld gave a glimpse of things to come, winning her fi rst collegiate cross country meet with a time of 15:17.4, which was a full 22 seconds faster than the next fi nisher. Seniors Ashleigh Montgomery and Jessica DiMascio placed fourth and ninth, respectively, helping the Tritons claim the season opener.

UCSD’s second team title came on the heels of Schofi eld’s second indi-vidual win after she broke the tape at the Cal State San Bernardino Coy-ote Invitational with a time of 22:09. Teammate Amanda Keuhn fi nished third in the event, while Montgomery and DiMasico took sixth and eighth place to give the Tritons four of the top 10 fi nishers.

UCSD fi nished second at the Triton Classic two weeks later, propelled by eighth and ninth place efforts from Schofi eld and Montgomery, respec-tively. Freshman Elena Inouye fi nished 13th in the event.

Returning to the site of their Coyote Invitational win for the 2008 CCAA Championships, the Tritons placed third on the 6,000 meter course, with Schofi eld fi nishing third overall individually with a time of 21:55.7. She earned All-CCAA rec-ognition for her performance. Inouye turned in another strong effort, fi nishing 18th overall to earn CCAA Freshman of the Year accolades, while DiMascio, Keuhn, and Brianna Alban placed 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, respectively.

UCSD’s season came to an end at the NCAA Division II West Regionals, which were held on the Triton Cross Country Course. Despite the familiar surroundings, the Tritons fi nished in sixth place as team, missing the cut to return to the NCAA National Championships. Schofi eld crossed the fi nish line fi fth overall, which earned her a spot on the All-Region squad and punched a ticket to the national meet. Montgomery fi nished 27th in her fi nal race as a Triton, followed by Inouye (51st), Alban (59th), and Kim Andrews (61st), respectively.

While the Tritons failed to qualify for the National Championships for the fi rst time in seven years as a team, Schofi eld did not disappoint as the team’s sole repre-sentative in Slippery Rock. She capped off her phenomenal fi rst season with a 22nd place fi nish in the snow and cold, clocking in with a time of 22:19 to record the highest fi nish for a UCSD athlete at the national meet since 2002. Scofi eld, who shaved 22 seconds off her previous time on the same course, brought home All-American accolades from the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association by virtue of her top 25 fi nish.

This is UCSD Athletics...

• Triton teams have captured 29 National Championships while 37 teams have fi nished as National Runners-Up. 44 others have achieved National Third Place honors. All told, UCSD has won a total of 171 national, regional, and conference championships.

• Individually, 130 Triton student-athletes have captured National Championships and a remarkable 990 student-athletes have been named to All-America teams.

• UCSD student-athletes have excelled academically as well, earning 23 prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships and 140 Academic All-America selections. Consistently, over 55 percent of the student-athletes earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, placing them on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

• In 2008, UCSD was ranked fi rst in Division II and 20th overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association Power Rankings, which are based on student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength, and athletic prowess of the university.

• In 2008-09, UCSD posted a Seventh Place Finish out of over 300 schools in the Learfi eld Sports Director’s Cup, an award emblematic of the best overall athletics department in the country. Since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2000, UCSD has placed in the top seven programs in the country on eight different occasions and fi nished second overall twice.

Earl W. Edwards

Earl W. Edwards - Director of Athletics

Earl Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March 2000. Since his arrival, the UC San Diego athletics department has been nationally recognized for its academic and athletic achievements on numerous occasions. Under his guidance, the 23-sport program has made a very successful transition from the NCAA Division III ranks to Division II. In fact, UC San Diego has surpassed all expectations at the D-II level, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001.

Since moving to Division II in 2000, UC San Diego has been ranked among the top six programs in the country on seven different occasions. In two of those fi nishes, UCSD was the national runner up. UC San Diego also won four straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioners Cup titles in 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09, an award that recognizes the best overall athletics program in the conference. In 2008, UC San Diego was ranked No. 1 in Division II and No. 20 overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Collegiate Power Rankings, which comprehensively measures student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess.

Edwards has served on many regional and national committees and organizations. Currently, he serves on the Executive Council for the CCAA and he served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) from 2003-07. Edwards was the president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and has severed on numerous other NCAA committees, including the Division II Management Council, the Division II Championships and Minority Opportunities and Interest, the Walter Byers Scholarship and Committee for Women’s Athletics. He has published several articles in Athletic Management and was featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue. In 2007 he was selected Athletic Director of the Year for the West Region by the NACDA.

A 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Edwards earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He then went on to receive his masters in Sports

Administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1973. In addition to working as athletics director at East Stroudsburg University and UC San Diego, he has athletics administration experience at the University of Massachusetts, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, and Drexel University.

Athletic Performance / Sports Medicine

Two integral parts of the UC San Diego athletics department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports.

The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are planned and monitored out by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance. Mamula brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics and represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room, which is over 12,000 square feet in size and features state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and fi rst class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete, helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletics Department as one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the country.

The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists.

The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program, where some of the athletic training students fulfi ll their clinical experience. Additionally, the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation.

Community Outreach

The University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area.

In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years.

Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton

teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to fi nd out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food

for the parents.

In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005.

Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefi t the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.

The UCSD campus is located in La Jolla, Calif., just minutes north of America’s sixth largest city, San Diego.
