Senior Miriam Crawford will lead an invigorated Citadel women’s track and fi eld team into the 2006 season after the building blocks for success were put into place in 2005. The 2006 edition of the women’s track and fi eld program looks to be stronger and have the same great depth that past teams have featured.

Last year the women broke or established seven indoor and nine outdoor school records. Not to be outdone, last year’s freshman class also broke or established four indoor and seven outdoor freshmen school records. This year’s stellar freshman class looks to have the same kind of impact on the Bulldog record books.

The 2006 squad looks to be young and competitive, featuring only one senior and three juniors. With the rest of the roster fi lled in with sophomores and freshmen, the young group is set to build a team for success in the years to come. Crawford, Laura Hewston, Stephanie McNeill and Amanda Rawl look to lead the Cadets in 2006.

Sprints & HurdlesCrawford and sophomore Jodi Whittle will carry the load in the sprints with help from Tosha Sanders and Christine DeVasto. Last year these four broke the indoor school record in the 4x400m relay and Crawford, Sanders and Whittle were a part of the outdoor school record 4x100m relay. This group also broke or established six additional

indoor and outdoor school records set last year. Vivi Brown and Maggie Bryan, who also lettered in Citadel Soccer, will join the 2006 team to compete in the sprints as well.

Middle DistanceA strong freshman class will give the women’s team some needed depth this year. Sophomore Flipper Reyes returns along with newcomers Megan Jenkins, Erin Ritter and Sarah Strickland. These three freshmen have already contributed greatly as they made up three of the top four runners on the 2005 Bulldog Cross

Country team that competed in the fall semester. Jenkins’ 2:17 high school time in the 800m is 10 seconds faster

than the school outdoor record of 2:27 and indoor record of 2:29. Those school records look to be rewritten as Jenkins gets better throughout her collegiate career.

DistanceLaura Hewston will move up from the middle distance group this year to better prepare for the 10k meter run at the Southern Conference championships. She will join Amanda Rawl, who will run the 3k and 5k runs during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Wilma Harp will join Rawl after competing in the steeplechase last year as a freshman. Ritter will likely move up in the steeplechase a few times before the conference championships.

ThrowsA very strong group of throwers will give the women’s team much needed depth this year. Junior Stephanie McNeill will be the cornerstone as she currently holds four school records (two indoor and two outdoor). Freshman Monique Edwards, who hails from Jamaica, has a personal best discus throw of 130’ to her credit, which is fi ve feet longer than last year’s top throw. Sophomores Laura Phelan, Tosha Sanders and Allison Taylor will handle the javelin duties again this year as Sanders returns from making the conference fi nals in her knob year.

Jumps & Combined EventsTosha Sanders will continue to represent The Citadel in the combined events as she had a solid freshman year in the pentathlon and heptathlon last season. Freshman Holly Maslowski looks to be a solid newcomer to the SoCon landscape in the pole vault.

The Citadel fielded one of their most talented women’s cross country teams in school history in 2005, coming off a remarkable 2004 season that sent the Bulldogs to the NCAA Regional Championships. Equaling their best Southern Conference fi nish in school history, the ladies had four individuals run marks in the sub 20-minute range for the 5k during the season, three of which came from the freshman class, signaling a good sign of things to come.

Freshman Megan Jenkins started the season with a personal best time of 19:21, placing fourth at the Gamecock Invitational. Jenkins was the fi rst runner to fi nish the race from the SoCon, placing fourth overall. Freshman Erin Ritter barely missed the 20-minute mark, placing 20th with a time of 20:01 while junior Laura Hewston fi nished 25th with a time of 20:12. The Citadel had an impressive fi rst showing in Columbia, placing sixth, one point shy of the College of Charleston (fi fth) and two points away from Georgia Southern (fourth).

Ritter fi nally broke the 20-minute mark in the second race of the year, running a time of 19:56 in the College of Charleston Invitational and placing fourth overall. Hewston quickly became the third Bulldog to eclipse the 20-minute mark as she fi nished fourth at The Citadel Invitational, running a 19:48, just behind teammate Jenkins who fi nished third with a time of 19:47.

The Bulldogs had a stellar showing at The Disney Invitational, fi nishing 11th in a fi eld of 33 teams. Jenkins and Ritter both ran under 20 minutes at 19:38 and 19:41, respectively, while freshman Sarah Strickland ran a personal best time of 20:03.

“The Disney Invitational was huge for our team,” said head coach Jody Huddleston. “Just a few years ago we would have fi nished 33rd in a race this large, but our ladies went out with a lot of confi dence in a tough fi eld that ran 297 runners. I was so excited that Sarah [Strickland] ran so fast and was sad that she barely

missed running under the 20-minute mark. That was the race that gave her the confi dence at Winthrop, where she placed second amongst Citadel runners and helped the team to fi nish fourth overall in the 15-team fold.”

Jenkins and Ritter ran the second and third fastest times in school history in the 4k at Winthrop. Freshman Caitlin Lincer had a stellar day at Winthrop, placing fi fth in the team group despite the fact that she had routinely been the No. 8 runner.

Strickland had another stellar day on the biggest of all days at the SoCon Championships, as she placed third on the team, running a 19:50. Jenkins and Ritter continued to set the pace for the Bulldogs as The Citadel tied a school best ninth place fi nish.

“We ran well but were a little disappointed with our fi nish,” said Huddleston. “We were able to beat the College of Charleston for the fi rst time ever two weeks before the conference championship but weren’t able to top them at the championships.”

The 2005 season was successful in many aspects and the Bulldogs expect an even better 2006 with a young group of talented runners returning to the squad.

Seniors Marcus Butler and Thomas Cummings hope to wrap up their Bulldog careers with conference championships as they lead The Citadel into the 2006 season. Last season, Butler ran third indoors and fourth outdoors in the 800m run while Cummings has fi nished fourth, fourth and third in the last three years.

Hard work and dedication throughout the off-season have helped improve the Bulldogs chances in 2006. Butler and Cummings also teamed up with Quintin Wright and Thomas Pressley to gain All-Southern Conference honors in the indoor 4x400m relay in 2005.

“We have been able to fi ll some holes from last season,” said Citadel head coach Jody Huddleston. “We will look to improve our outdoor fi nish of fourth place at the Southern Conference Championships.”

Sprints & HurdlesThe Bulldogs had their best showing in the 400m hurdles in the past 20 years at last year’s conference

championships putting three into the finals. Cummings led the way finishing third and earned All-Conference status. John Auer placed fi fth and Dan Sagmiller was a very close sixth. This year the Bulldogs add redshirt freshman Jamel Brown into the mix for an added punch in the 400m hurdles.

Juniors Quintin Wright and Thomas Pressley, who had very strong showings as sophomores last season, will lead a very talented group of sprinters. Wright was an All-Conference performer at the outdoor championships, running

third in the 100m dash with a personal best time of 10.58. He also fi nished fourth in the 200m dash with another personal best time of 21.47. At the indoor championships, Pressley made the fi nals in both the 60m and 200m dashes. In the 60m dash, he ran a personal best time of 6.94 placing fourth and ran another personal best in the 200m with a 22.20, fi nishing sixth.

The Citadel football player Dwight House will earn his second letter as he will give the Bulldogs depth in the sprints. As a freshman last year, House fi nished seventh in the 100m dash at the conference championships. Junior Cameron Easley and freshmen Wesley Merriweather and Caleb Moore will round out a strong sprint corps for the cadets.

Sophomore Jonathan Vallejo is expected to be much improved in the 400m and will get help from Chris Seabold and freshmen John Delgao, Ed Moore, Austin Young and Bryan Hladik.

Middle DistanceAll-Conference performer Marcus Butler will carry the load in the 800m run during his senior campaign. Butler fi nished third indoors and fourth outdoors and will look to move up into the top two places this year. Fellow 800m runner Matt Haight will give the Dogs some added depth.

In the mile run, Will Wilson, the No. 1 cross country runner for the Blue and White in 2005, seems to enjoy the shorter distance and is beginning to run very well. Junior Charles Kutz has really matured into a very dependable member of the Bulldog distance team. Kutz will drop down and run the 800m as well as the mile and will be a member of the distance medley relay team. Sophomore Robert Issac has improved tremendously and will push Wilson and Kutz all year. Freshmen Jorge Jimenez and J.T. Marcus will also look to help The Citadel in the mile.

DistanceMatt Holmes, a junior from Taylors, S.C., should improve greatly this season, as he consistently held No. 2 cross country spot this past fall. Steven Craig will push Holmes in the 3k and 5k indoors and may try the steeplechase this year.

ThrowsFifth-year senior Rick Austin will lead a very strong

The strength of the 2005 The Citadel men’s cross country team was their team cohesiveness and ability to run together in a group. A solid start and a tough fi nish was the story of 2005, but experience was gained that could set a good 2006 season in the making.

The Bulldogs opened up at the Gamecock Invitational where they showed promise with only a 36 second gap between the top fi ve runners. The Citadel fi nished second to Western Carolina by 10 points; the closest the Bulldogs have fi nished within the Catamounts in several years. The Citadel’s top fi ve all ran under 17:00 for the 5k race and the Bulldogs put two runners in the top 10 with junior Will Wilson fi nishing third and junior Matt Holmes placing seventh.

The Citadel continued their early season success at the College of Charleston Invitational where the

cadets won dual meets over both the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern. Wilson and Holmes were fi rst and second, respectively, against Charleston and The Citadel swept the top fi ve fi nishers against CSU.

The Bulldogs placed second in the 25th Annual Citadel Invitational. The Citadel continued to have a strong showing, placing second for the 14th time in the quarter century long event. Three Blue and White runners fi nished in the top 10 as Wilson placed second overall. Holmes came in fourth and senior Marcus Butler fi nished eighth. However, Furman had an

outstanding day, putting six in the top ten and edging The

Citadel in the team score.

The Bulldogs then headed to their toughest challenge of the season in Orlando, Fla., for the Disney Invitational. With over 30 teams and over 260 runners, the fi eld was tough enough without the weather being a factor. A 90% humidity level in Orlando gave the race an additional challenge that the Bulldogs overcame, fi nishing seventh out of 37. Wilson had another stellar day, placing ninth overall with a time of 26:10.

The Citadel struggled late in the season as they ran a disappointing ninth at the Winthrop Invitational. Holmes led the Bulldogs with a 24th place fi nish in Rock Hill, S.C., while No. 1-runner Will Wilson, who was ill, placed 55th overall.

The Bulldogs rounded out the 2005 campaign at the SoCon Championships. Wilson fi nished in 40th place and Holmes placed 48th overall. Robert Isaac, who regularly was a top fi ve fi nisher in The Citadel’s groupings, was unable to complete the race.

Wilson and Holmes will be two of the three seniors leading The Citadel in 2006 as they will lend their experience and leadership to a younger team.

group of throwers. As a junior, Austin was a fi nalist in four throwing events at the conference championships: hammer, javelin, shot put and discus. Austin did not compete outdoors last year in preparation for this season. He will be challenged this year in the hammer by junior Zach DiBois and in the shot by junior Alex Croskey. All three are capable of a very big throw and all have worked very hard in preparation for the challenges facing them.

JumpsAn area that needed improvement in 2005, The Citadel has added two talented high jumpers in Shaquill Smith and Kareem Royal. Smith brings a top height of 6-6 while Royal has hit the 6-8 mark. Both Smith and Royal are also competitive in the long and triple jumps. The Bulldogs also welcome newcomer Alex Johnson who brings in a 14-6 mark in the pole vault.

Jody Huddleston and his staff continue to strive to build the men’s and women’s track and cross-country programs into competitive teams with high standards of sportsmanship. In his 20th season with the Bulldogs the men’s program has established or broken 15 indoor and 14 outdoor track records. To date, 165 members, including two women, have earned All-Southern Conference laurels, 43 of which were individual champions.

The 2005 season was a solid year in growing both programs as the men fi nished the outdoor season fourth in the SoCon while the women matched the school’s highest team point total ever scored at the SoCon (Outdoor) Championships.

The 2004 season was good for the Bulldogs as Huddleston led the men’s outdoor team to it’s third fourth-place fi nish in fi ve years at the league championships. The men’s 4 x 100 relay team, comprised of Quintin Wright, Marcus Cohen, Cameron Easley and Thomas Pressley, represented the Bulldogs at the Penn Relays and took The Citadel’s fourth consecutive title in the event that features all the military teams from the academies.

Huddleston coached The Citadel’s first female athlete in 1997, Mandy Garcia, who became the school’s fi rst-ever female cadet-student-athlete. Two years later, Peaches Hudson took second in the heptathlon and captured the institution’s fi rst female All-Southern Conference honor. In 2000, Huddleston led the women’s team to their highest conference fi nish when the ladies fi nished in eighth place at the outdoor championships.

“We continue to improve as a team (both men and women) as a result of the efforts of [assistant coaches] Kris Kut and Brian Johnson. These two young men are the backbone of this entire program and we would not be as good or successful as we are

without them,” Huddleston said. “They both have full-time jobs and then come to the track and coach until it gets dark and then spend the next two hours recruiting. Brian is a school teacher and Kris is the deputy director of The Citadel’s summer camp and they still make time for these young men and women each day.”

Huddleston came to The Citadel from Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Okla., where he served as head coach for seven years. In 1984, he earned NAIA District IX Coach of the Year honors. Earlier that year, the Bison fi nished second at the league championships, the best track performance in 10 years.

An All-America decathlete at Florida Community College, Huddleston set a new national, decathlon long jump, Junior College record in 1975. Kris Kut begins his fi fth year as a cross country and track and field assistant. Like Huddleston, Kut has watched as six men’s school records have fallen. His main responsibility is with the throwers and has coached three conference champions and nine All-Conference performances. On the women’s side, he has watched four school records set by the throwers.

During his years as a cadet at The Military College of South Carolina, Kut captured the Southern Conference javelin title three times, while earning All-Conference accolades four times. With a throw of 204-10 in 2000,

he established a new school record.

As a senior, Kut earned a spot at the Penn Relays in the javelin and fi nished seventh. He took fi rst at several other key meets including the Furman Invitational. The 1999 season was a good year for Kut as he fi nished second at the SoCon Championships in the javelin and third at the Duke and Clemson Relays. As a freshman, Kut also earned the opportunity to represent The Citadel at the 1997 Junior National Track and Field meet in St. Louis, Mo.

A member of The Citadel class of 2000, Kut also earned his Master’s in Physical Education from The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies in 2003. Kut, born Jan. 20, 1978, married the former Holly Jones of Mechanicsville, Va., in the summer of 2003. Last year, they were blessed with the birth of their fi rst son, Andre Jackson.

his M.A. in Health and Exercise Science. In these two years, his athletes collected 18 All-Southern Conference honors and set 12 school records.

Johnson received his B.S. in Physical Education from Charleston Southern University in 1998. As a member of the track and cross country teams, he was twice named to the Big South All-Academic Team and received All-Big South honors in the 3000 meter steeple chase in 1998.

Johnson also serves as a physical education teacher at Charleston Progressive Academy. He continues to compete in many road races and recently traveled north to compete in the 2004 Chicago Marathon. Johnson and his wife Emily reside on Johns Island, S.C.

The Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa was born in Springfi eld, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel, Rosa was the starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force. A command fi ghter pilot with more than 3,600 fl ying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange offi cer fl ying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in Georgia, Idaho, New Mexico, South Carolina, and South Korea. He served as inspector general for Pacifi c Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokesman for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He has also studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has fl own the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircrafts, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130. On Jan. 3, 2006, Rosa returned to The Citadel where he serves as 19th president. He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (’03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the curriculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson is in his sixth year as the Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletics experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athlet-ics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fi fth athletics director in The Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the fi ve previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his fi rst fi ve years leading The Citadel’s athletics pro-gram, Robinson’s skills as a proven fundraiser have already benefi ted The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past fi ve years, the school witnessed the open-ing of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athlet-ics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the fi rst two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served fi ve years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for fi ve years, increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in South-ern Conference men’s basketball history to earn league Coach-of-the-Year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fi fth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson concluded a six-year term serving on the pres-tigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the NCAA’s most infl uential committees. The Committee is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Divi-sion I men’s basketball championships. Robinson earned a bachelor of science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, W.Va. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and seven grandchildren.
