The last time the Olivet College men’s golf program won aMichigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championshipwas 2002. Since then, the Comets have finished third in 2003, 2004and 2005 and second in 2006. This year, Olivet would like to climbback to the top spot and also gain the league’s automatic bid to the2008 NCAA Division III National Championships.

“We have shown many times that we can post low rounds,” saidHead Coach Gary Morrison, who is in his 33rd season leading theComets. “The biggest thing that we need to do a better job at islearning how to finish a round and have better course management.”

The Comets will be led by senior captain Joe Kiss (East Leroy/Harper Creek), a 2006 first-team and 2004 second-team All-MIAAselection. Last fall, he played in all eight league jamborees andplaced fifth in the player standings with a 74.0 stroke average.Kiss’ low round was a 68 at the Pine River Country Club andZollner Golf Course.

“Joe is our best and most consistent player,” Morrison said.“For the most part, he has always been our low scorer. Joe hasalso done a great job as our captain the last two years.”

Juniors Brock Gleadall (Stratford, Ontario/St. MichaelsCatholic) and Justin Lesansky (LaSalle, Ontario/International)earned second-team All-MIAA honors in 2006. Gleadall posted a76.0 stroke average, while Lesansky recorded a 77.6 average.

“Brock has the ability to be a lot like Joe and consistently shoota low score,” says Morrison. “Justin also has the potential to be a

great golfer. His problem is that he likes to hit the long ball off the teeand not step back to analyze what his next shot would be.”

Seniors Justin Guscinski (Horton/Hanover Horton) andChristian Rowe (Midland/Dow) along with junior Eric Ross(Burlington, Ontario/International) saw action last year in the MIAAjamborees. Guscinski played in seven jamborees and narrowlymissed earning All-MIAA honors with a 77.9 average. Rowe playedin six rounds and averaged 77.8 strokes. Ross competed in threerounds and totaled 236 strokes for a 78.7 average.

“Justin is a very smart and intelligent player,” Morrison says.“He has as much talent as anyone on the team, he just has notshown it during competition. Christian has become a more maturegolfer, and I am expecting him to show some senior leadership thisfall. Eric’s poise on the course has improved greatly over the lasttwo years.”

The aforementioned golfers also saw action for the Cometsduring the 2007 spring season. Kiss led the group with a 75.7average in six rounds. Gleadall was next at 77.2, followed byRoss (78.5), Lesansky (80.5), Rowe (82.2) and Guscinski (85.0).

Junior Jacob Johnson (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) along withsophomores Adam Skiff (Allen Park) and Brenden Stewart (Barrie,Ontario/Innisdale) worked on their golfing skills last year in a coupletournaments as a junior varsity team for Olivet.

Adding depth to the roster are freshmen Sam Bepler (DeWitt),Nick Harless (DeWitt) and Cameron LaFountain (Marshall).

Gary Morrison is in his 33rd season as thehead men’s golf coach at Olivet. After third-placeMichigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association(MIAA) finishes in 2004 and 2005, the Cometsclimbed one spot to place second in 2006.Morrison led his team to a 16th league title in2002, which makes him the winningest golf coachin MIAA history and Olivet one of the most

respected NCAA Division III men’s golf programs. With 16 golf titles, three basketball and one baseball title, Morrison

is the winningest coach in Olivet’s history. He was inducted into the OlivetCollege Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.

Morrison graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1957, where hewas an All-MIAA performer in three sports. He earned a master’s degreefrom Western Michigan University in 1965.

Morrison resides in Olivet with wife, Judy, a 1970 graduate ofOlivet. They have four children: Scott ’82, Randy ’85, Gary ex’87 andHeather ’93, as well as 11 grandchildren.

HEAD COACH GARY MORRISON ASSISTANT COACH KEVIN ALLARD ’81Kevin Allard is in his third season as the

assistant men’s golf coach at Olivet. He servesas the junior varsity coach.

MEN’S GOLFMICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference.

The 2007-08 school year marks the 121st consecutiveyear of operation for the NCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. From the verybeginning, the MIAA has conducted full-season championshipsin multiple sports. There have been changes in some of thesports (bicycle racing and Indian club juggling have long sincedisappeared, and basketball did not even exist in 1888), butthese changes have served to develop the MIAA into one ofAmerica’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, today offering18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members — Adrian,Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet, and SaintMary’s. Significantly, not one of these eight colleges has everbelonged to any other formal league. Albion and Olivet werecharter members although Albion is the only member to holdcontinuous membership. Ex-members are Michigan StateUniversity (1888-1907), Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), Hillsdale College (1888-1960), and Defiance College(1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1960until 1997 when the Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’sCollege of Indiana were invited to join. It also marked the firsttime that the league added members outside the state ofMichigan. The league stipulated, however, that the name ofthe conference would not change. The inaugural year ofcurrent members are: Adrian (1908), Albion (1888), Alma(1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926), Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet(1888), and Saint Mary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the leagueaccepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as anassociate member for the purpose of competing in football.Wisconsin Lutheran announced in 2005 that it will leave theMIAA after the 2007 season to join another conference.

Tri-State University of Angola, Ind., became a conferencemember in 2004-05 upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAAmember.

Olivet College is constructing a new multipurpose events center thanksto the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus. Cutler has contributedtwo donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. In recognitionof his outstanding support of the college, Olivet will name the facility TheCutler Events Center. Construction began in September.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognitionof Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback andled the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majorityof the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College communityis grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”

Olivet College breaks ground for The Cutler Events CenterThe 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility will be added on to the

It will be used by thecollege and community for activities ranging from athletic events tocommencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts andconferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room. Olivet’s men’s and women’sbasketball, volleyball and wrestling programs will use the facility for practicesand competition. All of the college’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programswill use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning.

A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designer withMicrosoft and holds more than 20 patents.
