MEN’S BASKETBALLMICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association(MIAA) is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference.

The 2007-08 school year marks the 121stconsecutive year of operation for the NCAA Division IIIaffiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24,1888. From the very beginning, the MIAA has conductedfull-season championships in multiple sports. There havebeen changes in some of the sports (bicycle racing andIndian club juggling have long since disappeared, andbasketball did not even exist in 1888), but these changeshave served to develop the MIAA into one of America’sfinest NCAA Division III conferences, today offering 18sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members —Adrian, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet, and Saint Mary’s. Significantly, not one of these eightcolleges has ever belonged to any other formal league.Albion and Olivet were charter members although Albionis the only member to hold continuous membership. Ex-members are Michigan State University (1888-1907),Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), HillsdaleCollege (1888-1960), and Defiance College (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from1960 until 1997 when the Defiance College of Ohio andSaint Mary’s College of Indiana were invited to join. Italso marked the first time that the league added membersoutside the state of Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that the name of the conference would notchange. The inaugural year of current members are:Adrian (1908), Albion (1888), Alma (1902), Calvin (1953),Hope (1926), Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet (1888) and SaintMary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when theleague accepted Wisconsin Lutheran College ofMilwaukee as an associate member for the purpose ofcompeting in football. Wisconsin Lutheran announced in2005 that it will leave the MIAA after the 2007 season tojoin another conference.

Tri-State University of Angola, Ind., became aconference member in 2004-05 upon its acceptance as aprovisional NCAA member.

Olivet College is constructing a new multipurpose events center thanksto the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus. Cutler has contributedtwo donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. In recognitionof his outstanding support of the college, Olivet will name the facility TheCutler Events Center.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognitionof Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback andled the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majorityof the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College communityis grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”

Olivet College breaks ground for The Cutler Events CenterThe 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility will be added on to the
