SEASON PREVIEW AND SCHEDULE

MEN’S GOLF TEAM HOPES TOCLIMB ONE MORE SPOT

With three returning All-Michigan Intercollegiate AthleticAssociation (MIAA) golfers, the Olivet College men’s golf teamhopes that 2008 will be the year that it can climb the final rung ofthe ladder and win the MIAA championship for the first time since2002. The Comets have finished as the runner-up in each of thelast two years.

By virtue of winning an MIAA championship, Olivet would alsoreceive the league’s automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Division IIINational Championships.

Three seniors, BrockGleadall (Stratford, Ontario/St.Michael ’s Cathol ic) , JustinLesansky (LaSal le, Ontar io/International) and Eric Ross(Burlington, Ontario/International)earned All-MIAA honors last year.Gleadall and Ross were first-teamAl l -MIAA select ions, whi leLesansky was a second-teamselection.

Each member of theaforementioned trio played in allof the 10 MIAA jamborees. Rossled the group with a 74.5 strokeaverage, including low rounds of71 at two of the outings. Gleadallwas next at 75.9 and Lesanskywas third at 78.3.

Ross, Gleadall and Lesansky also had superior rounds duringthe spring season. Ross posted a 74.6 stroke average in sevenrounds, including a 69 in the second round of the Denison (Ohio)University/Ted Barclay Spring Invitational. Lesansky and Gleadallhad a 79.3 and 79.7 stroke average, respectively.

A fourth senior, Jacob Johnson (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) is alsoexpected to help Olivet along the way. A year ago, he played inhalf of the MIAA jamborees and finished with an 81.0 strokeaverage.

Sophomore Nick Harless(DeWitt) was a part of the juniorvarsity team last year and isexpected to compete for time inthe starting lineup. In addition,four recruits who played in thestate finals are going to push thereturnees for a position on thevarsity team.

As the only MIAA school withmore than one All-MIAA golferexpected to return, Olivet has theplayers to win the championship.Now, it will be up to them to playto their potential.

HEAD COACHGARY MORRISON

Gary Morrison is in his 34th season asthe head men’s golf coach at Olivet. Afterth i rd -p lace Mich igan In te rco l leg ia teAthletic Association (MIAA) finishes in2004 and 2005, the Comets climbed onespot to place second in 2006 and 2007.Morrison led his team to a 16th leaguet i t l e in 2002, wh ich makes h im the

winningest golf coach in MIAA history and Olivet one of themost respected NCAA Division III men’s golf programs.

With 16 golf titles, three basketball and one baseball title,Morrison is the winningest coach in Olivet’s history. He wasinducted into the Olivet College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.

Morrison graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1957,where he was an All-MIAA performer in three sports. He earneda master ’s degree from Western Michigan University in 1965.

Morrison resides in Olivet with wife, Judy, a 1970 graduateof Olivet. They have four children: Scott ’82, Randy ’85, Garyex’87 and Heather ’93, as well as 11 grandchildren.

Kevin Allard is in his fourth seasonas the assistant men’s golf coach atOlivet. He serves as the junior varsitycoach.

Al lard is employed wi th FremontInsu rance Company as a c la imsrepresentative. He graduated from Olivetin 1981 with a bachelor ’s degree in

business administration and concentration in insurance.Allard resides in Marshall with wife, Cathy, and 17-year-

old daughter, Kalynne.

Now Open!The Cutler Event Center

Thanks to the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus, TheOlivet College Cutler Event Center is now open. Cutler contributed twodonations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. Constructionof the facility began last October. A grand opening ceremony will takeplace after the Homecoming football game Oct. 4, 2008.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given inrecognition of Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the startingquarterback and led the Comets to one of their best overall records inschool history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding themajority of the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet Collegecommunity is grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through theyears.”

The 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility was added on to theexisting athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It will be used bythe college and community for activities ranging from athletic events tocommencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts andconferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track,locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room.

Olivet’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestlingprograms will use the facility for practices and competition. All of thecollege’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programs will use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning.

A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designerwith Microsoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoftin 1988, he launched the Windows NT group and has since led thedevelopment of three major releases of the product. In addition to leadingthe Windows 2000 team, Cutler contributed to the architecture of all partsof the system. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field,Cutler was awarded membership in the National Academy of Engineeringin 1993.
