MICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference.

The 2008-09 school year marks the 122nd consecutiveyear of operation for the NCAA Division III affil iatedconference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. Fromthe very beginning, the MIAA has conducted full-seasonchampionships in multiple sports. There have been changesin some of the sports (bicycle racing and Indian club jugglinghave long since disappeared, and basketball did not evenexist in 1888), but these changes have served to developthe MIAA into one of America’s finest NCAA Division IIIconferences, today offering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members —Adrian, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet, andSaint Mary’s. Significantly, not one of these eight collegeshas ever belonged to any other formal league. Albion andOlivet were charter members although Albion is the onlymember to hold continuous membership. Ex-members areMichigan State University (1888-1907), Eastern MichiganUniversity (1892-1926), Hillsdale College (1888-1960), andDefiance College (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1960until 1997 when the Defiance College of Ohio and SaintMary’s College of Indiana were invited to join. It also markedthe first time that the league added members outside thestate of Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that thename of the conference would not change. The inauguralyear of current members are: Adrian (1908), Albion (1888),Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926), Kalamazoo(1896), Olivet (1888), and Saint Mary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when theleague accepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukeeas an associate member for the purpose of competing infootball. Wisconsin Lutheran left the MIAA after the 2007season to join the Northern Athletics Conference.

Trine University of Angola, Ind., became a conferencemember in 2004-05 upon its acceptance as a provisionalNCAA member.

Thanks to the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus, TheOlivet College Cutler Event Center is now open. Cutler contributed twodonations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. Constructionof the facility began last October. A grand opening ceremony will takeplace after the Homecoming football game Oct. 4, 2008.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given inrecognition of Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the startingquarterback and led the Comets to one of their best overall records inschool history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding themajority of the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet Collegecommunity is grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through theyears.”

The 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility was added on to theexisting athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It will be used bythe college and community for activities ranging from athletic events tocommencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts andconferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room.

Olivet’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestlingprograms will use the facility for practices and competition. All of thecollege’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programs will use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning.

A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designerwith Microsoft and holds more than 20 patents.
