SWIMMING AND DIVING

The goal for the Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team in 2007-08can be described in one word, “three-peat.” Last year, the Comets captured itssecond straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championshipby a mere nine points over Hope College. With 19 returning letterwinners, includingsix All-MIAA selections, the goal to “three-peat” is a realistic one.

The returning All-MIAA performers are seniors Yury Bylina (Minsk, Belarus),Ryan Key (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep), Dustin Meisner (Temperance/ErieMason) and Koji Takahashi (Etobicoke, Ontario/Silverthorn CI) along with juniorShawn Bergman (Chelsea) and sophomore Nathan Busscher (Hamilton/HollandChristian).

Bylina, a two-time All-MIAA selection, excels at each of the four strokes. Atthe 2007 MIAA Championships, he broke the school record in the 200 (1:56.84)and 400 (4:09.72) individual medley. Bylina also ranks among the top-five all-time in the 100 freestyle and the 100 and 200 butterfly.

Meisner, a three-time All-MIAA pick, and Key rank 1-2 all-time in the 100and 200 breaststroke. Each of his first three years, Meisner competed at theNCAA Division III National Championships after winning the 200 breaststroke andbeing the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke at the MIAA Championships. Lastyear at the league championships, Key placed third behind him in both events.

Takahashi holds the school record in the 200 butterfly, an event which hewon at the 2006 MIAA Championships. Bergman was selected as the 2007MIAA Most Valuable Diver after winning both events at the league championships.Busscher had a stellar freshman season, as he placed fourth in the 200 and 500free and 3rd in the 400 IM at the MIAA Championships. He holds the school recordin the 200 freestyle (1:43.76).

Senior Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo/Central) tops the Olivet record books inthe 50 (:21.50) and 100 (:46.88) freestyle. Junior Brad Voss (Lansing/Holt) isright behind him in both events.

Other returning freestyle swimmers on the roster are Steven Davis(Davidsville, Md./DeMatha), brothers Brian and Sam Jaffee (Bowling Green,Ohio), Greg Seger (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) and Jason Wheatley (Portage/Central). Seger is a sprinter, while the others are distance freestylers. BrianJaffee is the current school-record holder in the 500 and 1,650.

Brian Johnson (Lansing/Eastern) joins Powers, Seger and Takahashi inthe backstroke events. Powers holds the school record in the 100 (:53.98), whileTakahashi achieved a school record in the 200 (1:58.39).

In addition to Key and Meisner, Nathaniel Burchfield (Lansing/Everett)and Andy Williams (Fenton) are returning breaststrokers. Burchfield, Bylina,Meisner and Williams add depth in the butterfly events.

Justin Hulsebos (Wayland) and Andrew Wasson (Grand Ledge) joinBergman as a solid group of divers for the Comets. All three placed in the topfive in both diving events at the MIAA Championships.

Freshmen Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington), MikeHarden (St. Johns), Rick Kinsey (Chelsea), Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western),Zach McMunigal (Grand Blanc/Flint Powers Catholic) and Carl Scozarri(Centerline) add depth at each of the swimming events, particulary in the freestyle.

With all of this talent, there is no doubt that the Comets have the student-athletes, who can continue to make an impact in the MIAA and compete anotherleague championship.

Olivet College is constructing a new multipurpose events center thanksto the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus. Cutler has contributedtwo donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. In recognitionof his outstanding support of the college, Olivet will name the facility TheCutler Events Center.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognitionof Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback andled the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majorityof the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College communityis grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”

Olivet College breaks ground for The Cutler Events CenterThe 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility will be added on to the

existing athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It will be used by thecollege and community for activities ranging from athletic events tocommencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts andconferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room. Olivet’s men’s and women’sbasketball, volleyball and wrestling programs will use the facility for practicesand competition. All of the college’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programswill use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning.

A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designer withMicrosoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoft in 1988,he launched the Windows NT group and has since led the development ofthree major releases of the product. In addition to leading the Windows 2000team, Cutler contributed to the architecture of all parts of the system. Inrecognition of his significant contributions to the field, Cutler was awardedmembership in the National Academy of Engineering in 1993.
