Established in 1844,Olivet College is a private,liberal arts institution locatedin south central Michigan,between Battle Creek andLansing. Olivet College is home to more than 1,000 students, whostudy under The Olivet Plan. In this unique educationalexperience, students engage in both curricular and co-curricularprograms that combine real world experiences with lectures andservice learning.
Olivet College offers 28 programs leading to a bachelor ofarts degree, a master of arts in teaching degree, and dual degreeprograms with two higher education institutions in Michigan.Olivet is accredited by the North Central Association ofColleges and Schools.
The college offers opportunities for students to getinvolved in more than 30 clubs and organizations. Approximately40 percent of all Olivet students participate in athletics on anon-scholarship basis.
Olivet consistently has one of the most diverse studentpopulations of any private institution in Michigan. In a typicalyear, the student body includes 20 percent minority studentsand international students from 20 countries. The scoreboard at end of the 2006 MIAA Championshipsreflects the best finish in school history for the
Olivet College women’s swimming and diving program.
2006-07 SEASON PREVIEWThe Olivet College women’s swimming and diving program
finished an all-t ime best third at the 2006 MichiganIntercollegiate Athletic Association Championships. TheComets hope that they can carry that momentum into this seasonand have another solid year.
“We are just going to go out and do the best job that wecan,” said fifth-year Head Coach Dave Stubbs. “You can onlybe the best that you can, you can control only yourself and notwhat other schools are doing.”
Olivet is most deep in the freestyle events. Sophomore AmyJohnson (Gaylord) leads the sprinters, while senior LauraHerzog (St. Joseph) leads the middle distance and distancefreestylers.
Johnson set school recordslast year in the 50- and 100-yardfreestyle with times of :24.50 and:54.14, respectively. At the 2006MIAA Championships, she wasthird in the 50 and fifth in 100.
Herzog holds the schoolrecord holder in the 200-yardfreestyle at 1:59.15. She also hastimes that rank second all-time atOlivet in the 500- and 1,650-yardfreestyle.
Other sprint freestylersinclude senior Tracey Fix (NewBuffalo/Comstock Park) andKalee Redder (Grandville/Jenison). The remaining distancefreestylers are Sarah Boyd(Napoleon, Ohio), Lisa Egelkraut(Battle Creek/Central) , NatalieIaceopelli (Southgate/Anderson)and Heather Michalsen(Plymouth/Salem). Boyd holds theschool record in the 1,650-yardfreestyle at 18:34.26.
Senior Christina Coxon(Mason) is expected to be joinedby freshmen Ashley Oliver(Ironwood) and Jackie Taylor
(Plainwell) in the backstroke events. Coxon has lifetime besttimes of 1:06.26 in the 100 and 2:23.19 in the 200.
Senior Carrie Schroeder (Marshall) and sophomore ErinTramper (Jenison) are returners in the breaststroke events.Schroeder placed ninth in the 100 at the 2006 MIAAChampionships, while Tramper finished third in the 100 andfourth in the 200. Sophomore Lauren Siedlik (Livonia/Churchill)is also going to compete in the breaststroke events.
Kimble along with junior Rachel Tunison (Erie/Erie Mason)swim in the butterfly events. In the 200 and 100 fly, Tunisonwas sixth and eighth, respectively, at the 2006 MIAAChampionships.
The quartet of Coxon, Michalsen, Oliver and Tunison areexpected to compete in the individual medley events. Michalsen
placed 11th in the 400 IM at the2006 MIAA Championships.
Senior Kristin Bloomquist(Holt) and junior Courtney Mich(Bay City/Western) are returningdivers. Bloomquist, who may missthe season due to a a back injury,is the school record-holder in allof the diving events.
“All of these student-athletes are fine people,” saidStubbs. “I owe a lot of gratitudeto the seniors because they haveput their hearts and souls into thisteam. If I could, I would put up amonument for them. They are therocks that we built this programon.
“The men’s and women’steams have not only made animpact athletically at OlivetCollege, but they have also madean impact on the college. All ofthem are great student-athletes.”

2006-07 COACHING STAFF
HEAD COACH DAVE STUBBS
Dave Stubbs is in his fifth year as Olivet’shead men’s and women’s swimming and divingcoach. He is also an instructor in the college’sHealth, Physical Education, Recreation andSport Department.
Prior to coming to Olivet, Stubbs was aswimming and diving coach at the high schoollevel for 29 years, where he compiled 531 winsand 143 losses along with 31 conferencechampionships.
Stubbs is a member of the Michigan HighSchool Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He also received the 2003
ASSISTANT COACHES JIM CULVER, RICK EDWARDS AND STEVE LEWIS
Jim Culver, Rick Edwards andSteve Lewis are serving as assistantcoaches for Olivet. Culver andEdwards work with the swimmers,while Lewis is the diving coach.
Culver is in his fifth season asan assistant coach. He retired fromBattle Creek Lakeview High Schoolin June 2001. At Lakeview, Culvertaught accounting for 34 years. Healso served as an assistant swimmingand diving, and football coach for 20 years.
Edwards is in his third year as an assistant coach. He was ateacher for 33 years at Lansing Eastern High School.
Edwards has 34 years of coaching experience at Lansing Easternand Okemos schools. In 2002, he received the National High School
Culver Edwards Lewis
Matt Mann Award, which is presented by the Michigan InterscholasticSwimming Coaches Association (MISCA) for continued leadership,contributions and service to high school swimming in Michigan.
Stubbs coached the 1999 MISCA Class Two National ChampionshipTeam. He coached numerous state champions, was named the RegionalCoach of the Year three times and served as the president of the MichiganSwim Coaches Association.
Stubbs received a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s ofhealth and physical education from Bowling Green State University inOhio.
Stubbs resides in Battle Creek with wife, Jackie. They have threechildren.
Coach of the Year award. Edwardshas earned numerous awards fromMISCA. In addition, he is one of thefounders of the Michigan Water PoloAssociation and is a referee for highschool water polo.
Lewis is in his fourth season asthe diving coach. He also servesOlivet as a campus safety officer.
Prior to joining the Olivet staff,Lewis was a diving coach at Battle
Creek Lakeview and Marshall high schools for five and four years,respectively. He attended Western Michigan University for two yearsand was a part of the swimming and diving team.
Lewis lives in Battle Creek with wife, Tricia, and two daughters,Courtney and Kaitlyn. Courtney is a sophomore at Olivet.

Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic AssociationThe Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)
is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference.The 2006-07 school year marks the 119th consecutive year
of operation for the NCAA Division III affiliated conference.The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. From thevery beginning, the MIAA has conducted full-seasonchampionships in multiple sports. There have beenchanges in some of the sports (bicycle racing andIndian club juggling have long since disappeared, andbasketball did not even exist in 1888), but thesechanges have served to develop the MIAA into oneof America’s finest NCAA Division III conferences,today offering 18 sports for men and women.
The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members — Adrian,Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet and Saint Mary’s.Significantly, not one of these eight colleges has ever belongedto any other formal league. Albion and Olivet were chartermembers although Albion is the only member to hold continuousmembership. Ex-members are Michigan State University
(1888-1907), Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), HillsdaleCollege (1888-1960), and Defiance College (1997-2000).
The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1954until 1997 when Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’s College
of Indiana were invited to join. It also marked the firsttime that the league added members outside the Stateof Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that thename of the conference would not change. Theinaugural year of current members are: Adrian (1908),Albion (1888), Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926),Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet (1888), and SaintMary’s (1997).
The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the leagueaccepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as anassociate member for the purpose of competing in football.Wisconsin Lutheran announced in 2005 that it will leave theMIAA after the 2007 season to join another conference.
Tri-State University became a conference member in 2004-05upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAA member.
