2006-07 SEASON PREVIEW

STRONG PHILOSOPHY PROPELS COMETS!In the spring of 2004, Kurt Soderberg was hired as Olivet

College’s new head men’s basketball coach. His coachingphilosophy is built around what he calls “The Five Pillars ofComet Basketball .” They include: care, collectiveresponsibility, communication, selflessness and trust.Soderberg will emphasis these as he aggressively workstoward building a successful basketball program at Olivet.

“If we can make these five pillars the center of who we areas people, they will become who we are as a team, andeventually, they will become the culture of our program,” saysSoderberg. “Successful teams tend to have some very commoncharacteristics, and I believe ‘The Five Pillars’ encompassmany of those characteristics.”

To take advantage of the athleticism the Comets have onthe team, Soderberg is committed to playing a very solid man-to-man defense.

“I believe that players will do what you emphasize,”Soderberg said. “If you make it clear that a certain aspect ofthe game is important to you, more times than not, it willbecome important to them.

“We start every practice with an emphasis on beingfundamentally sound, communicating, defense andrebounding. Hopefully, over time that will become what weare known for. I believe that with those pieces in place, we cancompete with anyone.”

This philosophy does not end on the basketball court. The Comets are also expected to be academically committed, present themselves with class and be productive members ofOlivet College.

“We will work very hard to recruit and retain student-athletes who aspire to these expectations,” stated Soderberg.“It’s quite simple: people who make winning a habit off thefloor are more likely to win on the floor.”

The Olivet College men’s basketball program will have anew look in 2006-07. The Comets return only two letterwinnerswho accounted for 13 percent of the team’s scoring last year.Six players from last season’s jayvee team are expected tocontribute at the varsity level. In addition, Olivet also welcomesseven newcomers to its varsity team.

The returning letterwinners are junior shooting guard JeffCooper (Dowagiac) and sophomore forward Eric McCoy(Charlotte). Last year, Cooper averaged 6.8points per game to go along with 27 three-pointers. McCoy saw action in 23 gamesduring his rookie campaign at Olivet. Hegrabbed 36 rebounds and scored 35 points.

“I am happy with the work that Jeff andEric have done in the off-season to getbetter,” said third-year Head Coach KurtSoderberg. “They were very committed to theweight room. Jeff is an excellent three-pointshooter and has worked on doing a betterjob at taking the ball to the basket. We havehelped Eric work on extending his range andbecoming a better shooter.”

Last season, Evan Jones (Charlotte), RobMajors (Pinckney), Paul Smith (Napoleon)and Brandon Way (Detroit/Southwestern)saw limited minutes on the varsity team andcombined to score 14 points in 54 minutes.Junior John Zenner (Kingsley) andsophomore Joel Childrey (Concord/JacksonCounty Western) also secured spots on thevarsity team after playing the entire 2005-06season on the junior varsity team. However,

Childrey will miss this season after tearing ligaments in his leftknee during the preseason.

“Evan and Rob are both strong, physical players,” saysSoderberg. “Paul is a little undersize for his skill level, but hehas worked hard at getting better. Brandon is a very good playerand excellent on-ball defender.

“John has made great strides at becoming a good player. Itwas a hard loss to take when Joel went down with the knee

injury. He has already had surgery and isworking hard in rehab.”

Freshmen Blake Brannick (Jackson/Jackson Lumen Christi), Bryan Dutton(Napoleon), Joel Kerns (North Judson, Ind.),Jon Shurr (Davison), Andy Sierminski(Jackson/Jackson Lumen Christi) and AndreWilliams (Detroit/ Highland Park) haveearned a spot on the varsity team.

“Blake has a very high basketball IQ,”Soderberg stated. “He is a strong defenderwith great perimeter skills. Tyler reallyunderstands the game and has great instincts.Bryan is a coach’s kid, who is deceptivelyquick.

“Joel has great range and a nice toucharound the basket. Jon is a superb rebounderand does not turn over the ball a lot. Andy isprobably the crown jewel of this year’srecruiting class. He is the complete package,a great shooter and tenacious rebounder.Andre is our most athletic recruit. He makesgreat decisions and is extremely coachable.”

2006-07 OLIVET COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE

Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic AssociationThe Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)

is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference. The 2006-07 school year marks the 119th consecutive year

of operation for the NCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. From thevery beginning, the MIAA has conducted full-seasonchampionships in multiple sports. There have beenchanges in some of the sports (bicycle racing andIndian club juggling have long since disappeared, andbasketball did not even exist in 1888), but thesechanges have served to develop the MIAA into oneof America’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, today offering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members — Adrian,Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet and Saint Mary’s.Significantly, not one of these eight colleges has ever belongedto any other formal league. Albion and Olivet were chartermembers although Albion is the only member to hold continuousmembership. Ex-members are Michigan State University

(1888-1907), Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), HillsdaleCollege (1888-1960), and Defiance College (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1954until 1997 when Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’s College

of Indiana were invited to join. It also marked the firsttime that the league added members outside the Stateof Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that thename of the conference would not change. Theinaugural year of current members are: Adrian (1908),Albion (1888), Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926),Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet (1888), and SaintMary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the leagueaccepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as anassociate member for the purpose of competing in football.Wisconsin Lutheran announced in 2005 that it will leave theMIAA after the 2007 season to join another conference.

Tri-State University became a conference member in 2004-05upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAA member.
