Presidents Report April 2008

Hello and Welcome.

A short report this month, Mister Ed wants everything in yesterday before he heads east for a few weeks. Tony Richards will do Mays mag so please send your reports etc to him.

Your committee has been looking at some new name badges, smarter and more durable and as soon as a design is settled we will go ahead, cost around $10 which the club will pay for. Then all you have to do is wear them so we can identify each other, the fine for not wearing them is not yet agreed upon but is expected to be similar to not wearing a seat belt plus double demerit points on long weekends!

Some great trips and socials coming up, be there, do it, what more can I say!

Hope to see you out there soon.

Your President,

Simon Newton.

TRIP PROMOTIONS/INFORMATION

Trip Coordinators Report April 2008

This is just a brief report to help the editor get the magazine out before he goes away.

Those few, who went along, including some international visitors who went with Karl, enjoyed the long weekend trip at the begin-ning of March to Hill River. Read the full story in the trip report.

The Easter trip to Lochada this year will be over by the time you read this with a good number of people planning on going. It should be a good time to relax and spin a few yarns over a camp-fire, whilst we solve the world’s problems.

The ANZAC day long weekend at the end of April to the not so hidden breakaway has been planned with a few different options available to allow for any variables that may pop up (now it’s able to be found by “googling” it on the internet).

NOTE: The above 2 trips have been swapped around as Lochada is currently too wet and will now be the Anzac trip. Editor.

There are trip promos inside for both the Pierre Repaire and Kari-jini trips are in the magazine. The interest in the Karijini trip is quite amazing and has caught me a bit by surprise. I will get some more info out to those of you who are interested soon, and I would like to thank Ian for the help he has given me so far as I have not tried organising something on this scale before. There are a few people who are interested in continuing down the coast and at this stage it looks like we will end up at Warroora station around the 26th July with the possibility of staying for a couple of nights.

See you out there David Peck

DINNER AT THE ROSE & CROWN – Sat 12 April

The Progressive Dinner in the Swan Valley scheduled for this date was not able to be organized. So as an alternative I have booked to go to the Rose & Crown Hotel in Guildford. We had an annual din-ner there about 10 years ago but have not been back since.

Unfortunately their website is under construction at the moment, if it does open before the date it is: www.rosecrown.com.au Their cur-rent menu is on the next page.

I have booked for 20 and seats will be allocated on the social sheet on a first come first served basis. If we exceed these numbers I will try and book extras, time permitting. Please contact me to get your name on the list.

Date: Saturday 12 April 2008

Time: 7.00 pm

Venue: Rose & Crown Hotel, 105 Swan Street, Guildford

Helena and Aurora Ranges. June LWE.

This is a wonderful area for bush camping and exploring just north of Southern Cross. Peaceful, remote and quiet, it is unlikely we will see any-one else out there.

There’s a report and photos of our last trip out that way on the club web-site, hopefully it will not be as muddy this time! We will camp at the base of the ranges and spend the next day exploring, returning to our camp. Return to Perth on Monday perhaps via Beacon and some interesting iso-lated bushland reserves.

Trip subject to weather conditions as this area turns to chewing gum after rain. An alternative trip will run if this happens, same type of camping trip, just different direction.

Meet.

Midland Shopping Centre, on the right just before Midland, near the bus and train stations.

When.

Saturday, May 31st to June 2nd.

Time.

7.45 for 8am prompt departure.

Fuel.

Full tank, refuel at The Cross.

Bring.

Camping gear for the bush and water, no facilities nearby at all. CB Radio essential, can be hired for $5 from the club.

Contact.

Trip Leader Simon Newton, 94505953, Presidents email in mag, or name on list at meeting.

LOCHADA EASTER TRIP RAINED OUT. NOTE CHANGE OF DATE.

Please come along and enjoy a great Anzac LWE camping in the bush, well almost, Toilets and Showers are available at our DEC adopted camp. We may retain the area on a care and maintenance basis even if we accept any new program DEC may offer us.

The Anzac trip will be just that, care and maintenance and plenty of time to explore some places we may not have been previously. Before the Iron Ore Miners move in!

New members welcome, we will have a bush cooking demo as well as advice on selecting equipment and planning for a real remote area trip which I have in mind for next year. The area should be fantastic after the recent rains, the lakes are full and watercourses are flowing. There are no fire bans in force with the Shire of Perenjori so the removed fence posts can be put to good use.

I will be going 2 days earlier to do maintenance and prepare camp so if anyone wishes to go at that time please let me know or you may travel on Friday in the convoy that will be arranged.

Meet. Gingers Roadhouse, Gull Service Station, Gt Northern Hwy, Mid-dle Swan.

Friday April 25th..

Time. 7.45 for 8 am prompt start.

Bring. 1 OR 2 Jerrycans of fuel, Perenjori has closed down for petrol.

All camping gear, food and water, there is water from a bore, its drink-able after boiling but you may wish to BYO. Insect repellent and fly net. Any tools you have found useful in the past for minor maintenance jobs. CB Radio essential. Can be hired from the club for $5

Suitable for camper trailers.

No Dogs though, DEC property.

Contact. Simon Newton. 94505953 or the Presidents Email in the Mag.

Preferably, come along to the GM and put your name on the trip sheet.

Casserole in the Shed with Xmas pud. Saturday June 14th

This year instead of going bush for Xmas the committee has decided on a less labour intensive activity for the small band of workers and everybody bring a plate of soup, casserole or dessert to share as we have done on previous progressive dinners, only we will stationary in my new shed. So if it is raining we will hopefully all be snug and dry

See Keith and put down your favourite dish on the trip sheet so that we don’t end up with 15 of one dish and nothing else.

Please also bring a small plate of pre dinner nibblies to share and if we have a large group a few extra chairs may be required.

BYO drinks, knifes, forks, spoons and plates.

See you in the shed starting around 5.30pm for nibbles.

Desert Sands.

Dullsville to Birdsville!

Planning is underway for a crossing of The Simpson Desert next year, a 30 day trip starting May next year. The plan is as follows.

Perth to Laverton, Anne Beadell Hwy to Coober Pedy, Dalhousie Springs, NT across the Simpson to Birdsville. Birdsville Track to Marree, SA then through the magnificent Flinders Ranges to Port Augusta and home across the Nullabor.

A minimum of 6 club trips required including 2 trips of 3 days or more and experience in on the move bush camping ( caravan park camping does-n’t count ) and the ability to get along with people 24 hours a day for 30 days.

A good sense of humour and adventure essential. Organize your holi-days or long service leave now and acquire the necessary experience if you don’t have it already.

Register your interest.

Contact trip leader Simon Newton. 94505953 or the Presidents Email.

I have crossed the Simpson in my Liberty from both directions a few years back with an ‘L’ model and Brumby and it is quite achievable. Vehi-cles will do it much easier if lifted. I would class the dunes as worse than the Canning Stock route, and you probably have twice as many but you only have half the distance. Expect the track to have deep ruts and mo-guls near the tops of the dunes from previous large vehicles digging in.

Although called a desert the area is well vegetated and there are plenty of flat camping spots between the dunes. Beware of the dingoes and don’t leave anything lying around at night or they will run off with it. They seemed particularly partial to footwear and garbage bags. (probably be-cause they were the main items left outside of the tent)

Karijini to Coast:- (Newman from 16th July):

“Despite the apparent harshness, the feeling of space and stark openness is one of the most compelling attractions of this region. Horizons are wide, and the possibilities endless” 1.

The vast Pilbara beckons you to luxuriate in cool pools in secret valleys – oa-sis in an endless landscape of rusty raw colours. Beautiful scenery, gnarled gums, spinifex plains and rugged vistas with space for all.

Join this trip at Newman on the 16th July, or travel in a convoy from Perth. An itinerary has been done, but it may change to suit the majority as we travel. You can join or leave according to your available time. Eventually we will emerge on the coast near Coral Bay on 26th July and travel back to Perth. You may connect after Ian Johnson’s Pierre Repair trip leaving Perth on 5th -15th July via the Carnarvon Ranges (conditions apply).

This is a casual trip, so no rush with time to relax. It’s camping all the way, sometimes in the bush, and we have been able to reserve some tent sites in the exclusive Karijini Eco Retreat [thanks Simon] – excellent!

Karijini NP is vast, rugged and beautiful with deep pools and waterfalls where the Fortescue River has carved its way down through layers of ancient colour-ful rocks – a slice through geological time.

In Millstream/Chichester NP there are freshwater pools, including the pretty Chinderwarriner Pool, Crossing Pool, Deep Reach Pool and Python Pool. Both Crossing Pool and Deep Reach Pool offer basic camping facilities along with Snake Creek The park also has fantastic walk trails as well as a number of scenic drives around the park.

We may have a meeting of participants (or those interested) to discuss tac-tics, tyres, spares, equipment and whatever can be shared. Suggestions and assistance welcome.

Cheers, David Peck.

Pierre Repairre and/Or Carnarvon Ranges (July 2008)

Blue Hills & Red Ridges 1

In July 1991 the Geraldton 4WD Club and many others repaired Well 6 (Pierre Spring) on the Canning Stock Route (CSR). Maintenance is again required which entails replacing the deck planks. We have been invited back to lend a hand – a great opportunity to assist in the preservation of a truly beautiful and historic place on the CSR. Ian Stockbridge and the Geraldton 4WD club are supervising this worthwhile project which should take about 4 days on site. Leave Perth 5th July, Wiluna to Granite Peak station then a short section from Well 5 to Well 6 on the CSR 7th July.

After the well project, return home the same way, or enhance the adventure to the scenic Carnarvon Ranges on 11th July.

“looming blue out of the sandplain, changing to brilliant red – a huge mass of crazily tilted sandstone” 2

Connected by a track winding through sandunes and spinifex plains, there are many places of tranquil beauty, endless walks, hidden waterholes and a panel of Aboriginal paintings arguably the best in WA outside Kakadu. Exit 15th July via Neds Creek or Beyondie Station to the Great Northern Hwy. Then home; or another adventure beckons with David Peck’s Karijini to Coast trip! [From Newman 16th July].

Have a look at your diary now and apply for a place ASAP as late entries will not be accepted. You may do so with your Subaru (subject to acceptance) or other make of 4WD. Your vehicle and driving experience will form part of a basic acceptance assessment.

This promo is deliberately short on info – please ask for details.

Cheers, Ian Johnson.

For Application and several handouts contact Ian Johnson 9448 5419 [email protected]

Please note Ian will be away 22nd April to 25th June.

JOHN FORREST BIKE RIDE - SUNDAY MAY 25 2008

Time to dust off the bicycle, pump up tyres, check brakes and get the legs working. On this ride we will do a section of the Railway Reserve Mountain Bike Trail into John Forrest National Park. For additional infor-mation on the trail; Google "Railway Reserve Trail" (Information from Australia).

The trail is the original railway formation, which went up Greenmount Hill; as a result the gradient is only very slight.

The intention is to do an "out and back" i.e. follow the trail for a while; turn around and come back. I hope to cover about 10 to 15km. Do not be concerned about the distance; the return section is all downhill!

The trail is wide and well maintained and is suitable for all levels of riding ability. However, if you are planning on coming along, please ensure your bike is fitted with "fat" tyres; road bikes with skinny tyres may be difficult to handle.

Toilet facilities and a Kiosk are located at the Park.

Date: Sunday 25 May, 2008

Time: Meet at 8.45am for a 9am departure

Meeting place: Carpark at the corner of Pechey and Morrison Roads, Greenmount

Bring: Bicycle with "fat" tyres, bicycle helmet (recommended; just in case), water, torch (if you want to walk through the tunnel), money for refreshments at Kiosk or bring your own

Tripleader: Martin Southwood (Ph 9349 0182)

Snorkelling/Breakfast – Sunday 24 February 2008

Where: Mettams Pool

Attendees: approx 20 members.

I arrived a bit early so I could go for a walk. What an excellent idea. Took in the views and warmed up the body at the same time. By the time I got back to Mettams Pool though, it was still feeling a bit cool.

When I got to the beach Simon and Anne and the Wilcox family and Robert and Wendy were all there, some in wetsuits. Other members soon turned up and yet more members were coming for breakfast only.

Initially, I had doubts about whether I would go in, but eventu-ally I put my procrastination aside, donned mask and snorkel and took to the water. Well, the water really was quite warm and there were plenty of fish to see. Wendy even pointed out an octopus to me. I was very pleased that I did go in.

After everyone had finished their snorkelling and some had showers, we all headed to Peter and Ursula’s home just a short distance away. Some drove and others who had parked at their home walked.

Peter and Ursula had gone to a lot of effort to make us feel wel-come. Chairs and tables were out, as was juice and tea and coffee making facilities and some fruit and other bits and pieces. All very pleasant if you ask me and members happily chatted amongst themselves as the morning passed by.

Many thanks to Peter and Ursula for making us welcome at their home and for setting us up for breakfast in style. Thanks also to those who attended.

Tony Richards.

Waeco Fridge Mods

What I did first was to remove the handles on my Waeco CF-40 fridge as they took up to much room. I replaced them with rope handles held on by aluminium strap and attached stainless ring tie down fittings to the lower bolt holes.

The fridge now fits neatly on the left side and is held down with webbing straps. I placed a stainless ring tie down fitting toward the centre of the rear sill; it is attached to a slide on captive nut which fitted into an existing hole in the metal structure underneath, though I had to grind it down a bit to fit.

Page 19: 2008-04

Page 19

SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC

Then came the auxiliary battery for the fridge with a smart start relay un-der the bonnet adjacent to the main battery. I have placed an Anderson plug up at the top of the front passengers left leg plastic kick plate. The auxiliary battery initially was placed in a standard battery box, but this was to big for my liking so I found a plastic tool box that is just the right size and placed it in there, with a circuit breaker and cigarette socket and Waeco style socket.

Page 20: 2008-04

Page 20

SUBARU 4WD CLUB NEWS

The battery box sits on the floor in front of the front passenger seat and is strapped to the seat support rails if the back seat is being used, or normally it sits on a little shelf that fits over the transmission tunnel in the back. This is a wooden frame over the transmission tunnel with some slotted metal angle around the front edge and back down the two sides which attaches to the two studs that are under the front of the rear seat base (I just had to use them for something) and the bat-tery box is strapped down to the angle and a couple of shackles that fit into the rear of the front seat support rails.

Hill River Day 2

I had never been to Hill River before, never even heard of it, so when Martin suggested it at a committee meeting I was determined to go. I am glad I did, the trip up via the coast from Lancelin is always fun but the continuation from Cervantes was new to me. The track on had started to grow over from when Martin & Simon had done it some years before, when we reached a well formed hard base road a few km south of Hill River we discovered why. Most people now travel in via this new road so it is not so isolated.

Camping spots were hard to find on this long weekend which I guess will be so in the future as more people get to hear about it. Martin en-quired from some fellow campers that there was no track further on to Jurien so we made use of the new road to take us up to Indian Ocean Drive. The reason for the new road became obvious as development of what will become known as the Hill River Estate was springing up. We said goodbye here to Karl with Tina & Reinhart who had to head off home (via the Pinnacles) to catch a plane the next day. They seem to have enjoyed the trip immensely and thanked everyone profusely for giving them the experience of the Australian Bush. The rest of us went to Jurien for morning tea.

The next port of call north on the coast was the Sandy Cape Recreation Park. This by the looks of it had recently been created with 38 individ-ual bays for overnight stops and a tentland area, It certainly should be considered for a future trip. We never actually reached this area as Martin discovered a track heading south and after following a 4WD track we eventually reached North Head. This was another new dis-covery for me. It is situated on a headland with a beautiful bay near its tip. We drove to a small carpark as close as we could get to this bay and walked over a small dune along the beach to its western end to get out of the stiff breeze. Here some of us had a relaxing dip. Swimming back I noticed a black shape slithering down a dune. I called out to Martin who was on the shore who turned round to see a big Dugite heading towards him. It dissapeared into a bush and continued on skirting the shore. Some of us walked up to North Head where two 2nd world war anti-aircraft bunkers were situated. Near the highest point a

granite memorial can be seen for a scuba diving shark victim who per-ished in 1967. We returned to our cars for lunch and then travelled a more direct track out back to the highway. One more track was fol-lowed towards South Bay near Green Head but this petered out and we were forced to retrace our steps. Back to Hill River to find somewhere to camp. By this time the wind was picking up so instead of going back to our last nights camp it was decided to head back down the track to Cervantes to find somewhere more sheltered. Unfortunately nowhere suitable was found so back in town it was agreed to call it a day and get back to Perth before dark.

Fiona, Teleah and I thank Martin and Dale (who had had is licence for only 2 days and drove most of the trip) for a most enjoyable weekend going to a lot of places I had not been to before. Thanks also to Simon, Ann, Karl and friends for their company.

Property

Simon has just completed the update to his first aid training. He indi-cated that we should re-check our 1st aid kit contents, to ensure we still have the latest suggested items. Also we need to ensure the kit is available for all club trips.

Merchandise all polo shirts = $23.00 and jackets = $35.00 and bean-ies = $11.00, caps, hats, transfers also available.

4WD Association

• Tony and Simon attended last months meeting. There is a general lack of volunteers at the association. Our current insurance is through the Association, and Simon has found it difficult to find alternative op-tions (having tried several insurance companies). Feelings regarding the association are however still open, and this is currently just an ex-ploration of options . The question being raised is – “is being a mem-ber still an asset to us other than the insurance?”.

• The association have asked for any articles we have for them to publish on their association web-site.

• There night navigation course is being run again this year.
