THE COACHES CLEVELAND BROWNS - ROMEO CRENNELRomeo Crennel is entering his fourth season as Head Coach and was rewarded with a two-year contract ex-tension (thru 2011) on Jan. 29, 2008. Crennel led the Browns to a 10-6 record in 2007, including a franchise-best seven consecutive home wins, and witnessed six Browns selected to the Pro Bowl. Crennel’s offense developed into a highly productive unit and ranked eighth in the NFL in offense (5,621 net yards) and scor-ing (402 points). The output of net yards and scoring also ranked third best in franchise history. Crennel was

named head coach of the Cleveland Browns on Feb. 8, 2005, the 11th full-time head coach in franchise history. Crennel returned to Cleveland in 2005, after serving as the Browns defensive coordinator in 2000, and along with Phil Sav-age helped rebuild the football operations. Crennel previously led the Browns to a respectable 6-10 record in his fi rst year as a head coach and added a 4-12 mark in 2006. His resume includes 38 years of coaching experience, including 27 years in the NFL. Prior to rejoining the Browns, Crennel served as the defen-sive coordinator for New England (2001-04), helping the Patriots to three Super Bowl victories. From 1997-99, Crennel coached the defensive line on the New York Jets. He spent 12 years on the New York Giants coaching staff starting as the special teams and defensive assistant coach in 1981. Crennel began his professional coaching career in 1970 at his alma mater, Western Kentucky. He also saw stints at Texas Tech, Mississippi and Georgia Tech before entering the professional ranks.

TENNESSEE TITANS - JEFF FISHERJeff Fisher is entering his 14th full season as head coach of the Tennessee Titans. Fisher holds the fran-chise record for wins by a head coach with 120 victo-ries. In a fi ve-year period between 1999 and 2003 his team’s success is unmatched by any coach in franchise history. Fisher led the Titans to four playoff appear-ances (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003), two Division titles (2000 & 2002), two AFC Championship Games (1999, 2002) and one Super Bowl berth (XXXIV). He presided over the most victorious (56 regular season wins and 5

postseason wins) and successful fi ve-year period in the franchise’s 47-year his-tory. Last year, Fisher led the Titans to a 10-6 mark and a playoff berth. Fisher originally joined the Oilers’ coaching staff on Feb. 9, 1994, after spending two seasons as the defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He was elevated to head coach on Nov. 14, 1994, replacing Jack Pardee, for the fi nal six games of the season. Fisher offi cially began his coaching career as an as-sistant for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1986, tutoring the defensive backs for three seasons before becoming the NFL’s youngest defensive coordinator in 1988. In 1991, Fisher headed west to be reunited with his college coach John Robinson, serving as the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator before joining the 49ers one year later.

CBS will broadcast the game with Don Criqui (play-by-play) and analyst Dan Fouts calling the action.

Browns Name 2008 Captains

Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel named LB Willie McGinest, LB Andra Davis, QB Derek Anderson, C Hank Fraley, K Phil Dawson and KR Joshua Cribbs as team captains for the 2008 season. The players were voted upon by their teammates.

McGinest (15th season) and Davis (7th season) will serve as defensive cap-tains, Anderson (4th season) and Fraley (9th season) will serve as offensive captains, while Dawson (10th season) and Cribbs (4th season) as special teams captains.

Each NFL club will have team captains wear a captain patch on their uniform. The idea came from NFL players during a meeting of Commissioner Roger Goodell’s new Player Advisory Council last season. The purpose of the program is to support and recognize the importance of team leadership through the role of the captains. Captains traditionally serve as a link between players, coaches and management to help foster cohesion within the teams.

Defense Grounds Bengals Running AttackThe Browns defense limited the Bengals to just 69 yards rushing in the Browns 20-12 victory on Sept. 28. The 69 yards rushing was the least amount that the Browns have allowed since Romeo Crennel brought the 3-4 defense to Cleve-land in 2005.

Zastudil sets franchise recordWith winds gusting between 40-50 miles per hour on Sunday Sept. 14, against Pittsburgh, the conditions were perfect for a diffi cult task for kickers on the special teams units. However, Browns P Dave Zastudil established a career-best 53.0 gross average and 52.8 net average on his fi ve punts for 265 yards. Zastudil’s net average also established a team single-game mark (dating back to 1970) and ranks tied for second-highest net punting single-game average in the NFL. More impressively, Zastudil set the tone early in the contest as four of his fi ve punts came in the fi rst quarter kicking into the gusty winds and his fi fth kick came in the third stanza into the wind as well.

Browns Honor Hall of Fame GuardThe Browns will honor Hall of Fame offensive guard Gene Hickerson by wear-ing a sticker on the back, lower left of the helmet next to the NFL Shield for the remainder of the season. The round sticker will be black and have GH in white lettering.

Hickerson passed away Oct. 20 at the age of 73. Hickerson joined the Browns as a seventh-round draft choice out of Mississippi in 1957. His 15-year career, all with the Browns (1958-60, 1962-73), ended in 1973 as he played in 202 games, which ranks fourth highest in franchise history, including a streak of 165 consecutive games, which also ranks fi fth longest in team annals. He appeared in six Pro Bowls (1966-71) and was voted an all-league selection on fi ve occa-sions (1966-70). Hickerson was named the NFL’s most outstanding blocker in 1969 and throughout his career was part of an offensive line that paved the way for three Hall of Famers, legendary running backs Jim Brown, Bobby Mitchell and Leroy Kelly.

“Everyone associated with the Cleveland Browns is saddened by his loss,” said Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel. “His tenacity as a blocker and tough-ness as a player epitomized what it is to be a Cleveland Brown. We send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Hickerson family.”

Edwards Has Career NightWR Braylon Edwards set a career high with 154 receiving yards on fi ve recep-tions and a touchdown against the Giants on Oct. 13. It marked the ninth career 100-yard receiving game for Edwards. His previous career best was 149 yards at Arizona on Dec. 12, 2007.

Browns Get Offensive Against the GiantsIn the 35-14 victory over the Giants on Oct. 13, the Browns set season highs for points (35), fi rst downs (20), net yards (454), rushing yards (144), passing yards (310) and it marked the fi rst time that the Browns were not sacked all season.

Cleveland also converted on 9-of-13 third downs for a 69% success rate, also a season best.

Dawson reaches milestoneWith his four points against the Ravens on Sept. 21, K Phil Dawson topped the 800 point milestone and totaled 803 career points. Dawson has registered a point in each of the last 33 games. The last time Dawson failed to record a point was against Cincinnati on Nov. 26, 2006.

CRENNEL NAMED COACH of the WeekHead coach Romeo Crennel was voted the Motorola NFL Cach of the Week for Week 6. Crennel led the Browns to a 35-14 win over the undefeated Su-per Bowl champion New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Browns QB Derek Anderson threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns fi nding WR Braylon Edwards for 154 of those yards and one touchdown, while RB Jamal Lewis rushed for another touchdown and 88 yards. The Cleveland defense consis-tently pressured Giants QB Eli Manning leading to three picks by three different Browns defenders including a 94-yard interception return for a touchdown by CB Eric Wright.

Wright Named Defensive Player of the WeekDB Eric Wright was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15. Wright had three solo tackles, two passes defensed and one interception re-turned for a touchdown in Monday Night’s 35-14 win over the New York Giants on Oct. 13. In the contest, Wright’s fourth quarter interception sealed the victory as his 94-yard interception return for a touchdown turned a 13 point advantage into the 35-14 fi nal. The interception return also was the fourth longest in club history.

BROWNS ACCOMPLISH RARE FEATIn the Browns 35-14 win over the Giants on Oct. 13, P Dave Zastudil enjoyed a quiet evening. The Browns offense did not have to punt, did not commit a turnover or allow a sack for the fi rst time in club history. Since 1963, when sacks were offi cially recorded, there have only been four NFL games where an offense has not allowed a sack, committed a turnover or had to register a punt in a regular season game.

2008 Browns LegendsThe Cleveland Browns have announced that Warren Lahr (1948-59), Paul Wig-gin (1957-67), Walter Johnson (1965-76) and Eric Metcalf (1989-94) are the newest members of the Cleveland Browns Legends based on the combined voting of fans and 10-member panel. All four Legends were inducted at a special ceremony at Cleveland Browns Stadium during the Browns home game vs. The New York Giants on October 13.

The Browns created the Cleveland Browns Legends in 2001 to annually honor former players who have made a major impact on the organization. Players must have been on the Browns’ active roster for a minimum of fi ve seasons. The Cleveland Browns Legends were determined by fan balloting on the Browns’ website – www.clevelandbrowns.com - (weighted 20%) along with voting by a 10-member Legends Panel (weighted 80%). Each of the Browns alumni in the Pro Football Hall of Fame were automatically inducted into the Cleveland Browns Legends.

Warren Lahr – DB– 5’11 – 189 lbs – Years with Browns: 1948-59A staple in the defensive backfi eld for the Browns for 12 seasons, Warren Lahr fi nished his storied career with 40 interceptions, landing him second on the all-time franchise list. In 1950, Lahr had his most prolifi c season as a cornerback, intercepting a career-best eight passes and ran back two picks for touchdowns. The Pennsylvania native followed his stellar 1950 season by returning two more interceptions for touchdowns in 1951 and started a streak of fi ve seasons (1951-1955) where he recorded fi ve interceptions. A graduate of Western Reserve, Lahr ended his career with 530 interception return yards and fi ve defensive touchdowns and cemented his place in Browns history. Lahr passed away on Jan. 19, 1969.

Paul Wiggin – DE – 6’3 – 242 lbs – Years with Browns: 1957-67Wiggin aided with the progression of the defensive end position as one of the most dominant players of his era on the end of the defensive line. A sixth-round pick in the 1957 NFL draft out of Stanford University, Wiggin was a two-time fi rst-team All-America selection and was inducted into the college football Hall of Fame in 2005. The durable Wiggin was the picture of endurance, playing in every game for 11 seasons in Cleveland. Despite playing his entire career at defensive end, Wiggin recorded three career interceptions and returned his lone interception in 1960, 20 yards for a touchdown. Born in Modesto, Calif., Wiggin returned to his alma mater and coached for three years after a three-year stint as a coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Walter Johnson – DT – 6’4 – 275 lbs – Years with Browns: 1965-76Nicknamed “Zoom” for his notorious quickness off the ball, Johnson was taken by the Browns in the second round of 1965 NFL draft and went on to play every game of all of his 13 seasons in the league. Johnson teamed with DT Jerry Sherk to create one of the most dominant defensive tackle tandems of their time. During his career, Johnson fronted a Browns defense that notched twenty or more forced fumbles in every season he was on the team. Even as an interior defensive lineman, Johnson corralled two interceptions during his storied career and even broke off a 24-yard kickoff return playing special teams in 1972. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Johnson attended Los Angeles State University and ended his NFL career having played in 182 games. Johnson passed away on June 30, 1999.

Eric Metcalf – RB/KR – 5’10 – 188 lbs – Years with Browns: 1989-94An explosive player at the University of Texas, Metcalf was selected by the Browns with the 13th overall pick in the 1989 NFL draft and made an immediate impact. In his rookie season, Metcalf rushed for 633 yards and six touchdowns while also reeling in 54 receptions for 397 yards and four scores. As a kick returner, Metcalf was regarded as one of the most dangerous players with the ball as shown by his 1,052 return yards in his second season, including two touchdowns one of which came via a 101-yard kickoff return. As his versatility increased throughout his career, Metcalf earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 1994 and 1995 before he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons. With 43 career touchdowns from scrimmage and 12 more from kickoffs, the Seattle, Wash., native remains one of the biggest playmakers in the history of the Browns organization.

Opposing defenses have to account for both of us on the fi eld and then it creates opportunities for other players.”Edwards became the sixth receiver in Browns history to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a single season, setting the franchise record for most receiving yards in a single season. Romeo Crennel Press Conference Transcript 12-1-08(Opening statement)- “Yesterday the team played a good game against a good football team. They did the things that we felt like we had to do to give ourselves the best chance to win and as it turned out those things looked like the correct things to do. At the end, there were one or two plays at the end of the game that they made and we didn’t make that made the difference in the game. It’s unfortunate because they played really hard, they executed the game plan the way it should have been executed but they were also playing against good players as well and sometimes good players make plays. They made the plays that allowed them to have a victory and gave us another defeat. The thing I think that we have to do is if they will play like that for the rest of the season that we’re still going to have our chances to win some games. That becomes the focus as we go forward, to execute the game plan to the best of your ability and everybody do their part. We’ll see how it goes from there. Now it’s going to be a little tougher because Kellen Winslow hurt his ankle and is getting an MRI and they will let us know what the results are. We are all concerned to see if it is a high ankle because they usually take a little bit longer but later on today we will know exactly what that is. Also, Derek Anderson hurt his knee. It didn’t look good, he’s getting an MRI and they will let us know exactly what the prognosis is on his knee. Just looking at it, they say best-case scenario might be a hyper-extended knee and he’s probably not going to be ready for this week. Worst-case is that it’s some kind of ligament damage. We’ll fi nd out what it is and then we’ll have to adjust. In adjusting, we have Richard Bartell on the practice squad and we just got him last week so he’s in a crash course trying to get familiar with the system. We also have Josh (Cribbs) who has been here and we’ve got some plays ready for him from this past game. That’s what we’re looking at and we’ll also probably look to see if maybe there’s a veteran available that has some background in the system and determine if that guy is available if we need to bring that guy in. That’s what we’re looking at going into the game this week. Like I told you, I thought they played good, they played as a team, they hung together and it went down to the wire again. Last year we were winning those games that went down to the wire, this year we’re not winning those games unfortunately.”

(On if the veteran quarterback being brought in would start)- “(His role would be) to back up. Because a veteran has been in games, he’s been reading defenses and will have some experience that might benefi t us.”

(On Ken Dorsey)- “He’s a very smart quarterback and he’s a competitor. Now, he probably doesn’t have some of the physical skills that some other quarterbacks in the NFL have. I think that’s probably been the biggest drawback.”

(On fans cheering when Derek Anderson got hurt)- “What we would hope is that everybody appreciates the effort that the players put out on the football fi eld and also respect the fact that they’re playing hard and that no one wants to see anybody injured, not at all. It’s unfortunate that it happened if that’s what they were cheering for. I’m not exactly sure so I would have to talk to some of those people who were cheering to see what they were cheering for.”

(On the team playing hard against the Colts)- “It’s rewarding in the fact that when you’re in this situation and your team is not doing well, everyone wants to see if your team will ‘quit’. As a coach, you want your players to play hard, to give great effort and to do the things that they need to do to give themselves a chance to win. I thought that our team did that yesterday.”

(On Corey Williams’ injury)- “I’m not exactly sure how he cut it. I saw him coming off and it was bleeding pretty good when he came off. They had to take him in and clean it up and stitch it up but he was able to come back and return.”

(On injuries sustained against the Colts)- “(Charles) Ali with his ribs, they gave him a prob-lem so he didn’t get a chance to play very much. We’ll have to see how that does as the week goes on. (Syndric) Steptoe had an ankle but he played with the ankle and every body else made it through okay.”

(On needing a ‘miracle fi nish’ in order to save his job)- “I don’t know anything about a miracle fi nish, I just have to play the next game against a very good football team, probably one of the best teams in the NFL this year in the Tennessee Titans. That’s all I can worry about and trying to get my guys to play the game plan that we put together. If they’ll go play hard then they’ll have a chance.”

(On surgery for Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn)- “That’s Brady’s decision on his fi nger and he’ll make that decision when he’s ready to make that decision. As far as DA, we’re still awaiting the results of the MRI so we won’t know until after we get those results exactly how long it will be or what may be required.”

(On if losing quarterbacks have been pass-protection issues)- “I think that we have to work on it because the NFL is a copy-cat league and when they see something that works then the next team is going to try it to see if you got it fi xed. For the next three games, we’re going to have to make sure we work on the bull-rush in practice and do a good job with it. Once we show them that we’ve got it fi xed and then they’ll try something else.”

(On Martin Rucker’s role with Kellen Winslow and Darnell Dinkins out)- “That’s probably going to be more opportunities for him. He made the catch yesterday that was a good concentration catch so he’ll get more playing time if both of those guys (are out). Dinkins, he’s banged up and it doesn’t look like he’s going to be able to go this week and then if Kellen can’t go, he gets more playing time. The important thing is that he takes advantage of the opportunity and show that he belongs and that he knows what to do. There was one play that he went out there and we had a problem with the formation and we had to use a timeout. That’s not good exposure on that one but the catch that he made, that’s good ex-posure on that catch. This week and going forward, knowing that he might get more playing time, he needs to concentrate in practice, work good in practice and when he gets to the game have no problems with formations, no problems with effort and then be productive. That will help him a lot.”

(On Josh Cribbs as the quarterback)- “I think he’s one of the options that we have and we’ll have to look at these options and determine which one we think is the best. The thing that we do know is that he’s going to the games and we had some plays ready for him last week. We might have to expand that package depending on what happens in the next couple days. The thing that we do know about Josh is whatever we ask him to do, he does it full speed, gung-ho. If we asked him to be the quarterback he’d put everything he had into being the quarterback. Whether we ask him to do that or not, in the next couple days we’ll make a decision.”

(On how tough the season has been)- “This has been pretty tough. But you just work through it, that’s what you do.”

(On what the young players on the team are learning)- “I hope that they learn how hard it is to win in the NFL and that you can’t take anything for granted. You’ve got to work your best during the week, prepare all week and then be ready to play your best on Sunday and still there’s no guarantee that it’s going to be good enough. As we saw yesterday, one play made the difference in the game. I hope it’s been sinking in but you just really don’t know with some of these young kids. I hope it’s sinking in.”

(On the defensive performance against Indianapolis)- “In general, when you think about who they were playing against and the weapons that were available to a future Hall of Fame quarterback and with a future Hall of Fame wide receiver, a running back that’s quick and can go the distance, a tight end that can go out to the slot and make plays. Reggie Wayne is another good receiver, so when you think about the weapons they had available to them and to be able to hold them down without a touchdown, that’s a pretty good ac-complishment. Like I said, it wasn’t the prettiest thing because they did drive the ball some but holding them to fi eld goal attempts, if you can do that with Peyton Manning, a lot of coaches in this league would do that.”

(On if the offensive line isn’t as in-sync as is it was last year)- “Maybe we’re not a productive as we were last year but I think those guys as a group, they work very well together. Some-times, everybody isn’t hitting on all cylinders and that can cause you some problems. Each individual has different things that he has to deal with, different type players that he has to deal with, and sometimes you get a matchup that’s not a good matchup for an individual. Then you have to work around it as best you can. I think that we’re inconsistent at times.”

(On Brandon McDonald)- “I don’t know how smart a move it was but I felt like it would take some pressure off of him by not starting him in that game, giving him a chance to not be attacked right away. I think that in that particular game, that fi rst pass play was to that side where he would have been lined up. Now he has a chance to sit back, catch his breath and then go in and play the game which he did. Now, to have a game like he had yesterday, that just shows he’s learned something from the bad game he had against Denver. He’s working harder in practice and he’s applying his technique and his leverage and all of those things that you have to do to be a good player.”

(On if is unfair to be judged in a season with so many injuries to his team)- “People don’t care about whether it’s fair or not, they care about whether you win or lose. That’s the nature of this business that we’re in and I’ve said that all along. I didn’t have any rose-colored glasses on when I took the job. I’ve been in this league 30 years and I’ve seen a lot of things happen in 30 years. Most of it has to do with winning and losing so if you can win, you improve your chances of staying, if you don’t win then your chances are not as good.”

(On holding Peyton Manning to 125 yards passing)- “We’re dealing with human nature and sometimes human nature doesn’t make sense. Generally, when you’re playing the top quarterback in the league, you know that you better be at the top of your game. You prepare to try to get ready to play your best. I think that when you face a guy like that, that’s what you’d better do and I think that’s what they did.”

(On his message to the fans)- “If they watched this past game and saw how the guys played, how they executed, how they had a chance to win against a very good football team and it looks that team will be a playoff team depending on how things go the rest of the season, if they see how they played and performed against that kind of team, then the rest of the season we hope to get the same kind of performance and effort and have chances to win the games. That’s what we’re all trying to do.”
