In his 11 seasons as UC San Diego head coach, Scott McGihon has brought great success to the Tritons’ swimming and diving teams. McGi-

hon, a 1990 graduate of UC Irvine, was a four-year varsity swimmer for the Ant-eaters. In 1993, he graduated from the University of Utah College of Law, and in 1994, took over the Beach Swim Club in Long Beach.

In 1996, he accepted a position as men’s assistant coach at the University of Utah, before moving on to the women’s program at the University of Iowa in 1997 as an as-sistant. After a one-year tenure with the seventh-place Lady Hawkeyes of the Big Ten, McGihon accepted the head men’s and women’s position at UC San Diego.

McGihon is a Level 5 ASCA coach, which is the highest level of certifi cation for coaches in the United States. In 1999, he

was named both the men’s and women’s swimming Coach of the Year at the Pacifi c Collegiate Swim Conference Champion-ships. Since then, he has been named either the Men’s or Women’s Coach of the Year an additional four times.

On the men’s side, McGihon has helped produce four Olympic Trials standards, nine individual NCAA national champi-onships, 57 individual All-Americans, 10 relays named All-American, three UCSD Athletes of the Year, the 1999 and 2004 PCSC Swimmer of the Year, the 2000 GTE Academic All-American of the Year, 2008 NCAA Division II National Champi-onship Male Swimmer of the Meet, and the 2004-05 NCAA Division II National Swim-mer of the Year. Currently the Tritons in McGihon’s men’s program hold 24 of the 27 school records and one NCAA record.

On the women’s side, the Tritons un-der McGihon’s watch have had the 2000 NCAA Swimmer of the Year, 2003-04 and 2004-05 NCAA Woman of the Year, six U.S. Nationals standards, 16 individ-ual NCAA national champions, four relay NCAA champions, one Olympic Trials standard, 59 individual All-Americans, 21 relay All-Americans and six UCSD Ath-letes of the Year. Currently the athletes in McGihon’s women’s program hold all 27 school records and two NCAA records.

The Tritons put together another succesful season in 2008-09 and for his help leading the squad, McGihon was named Pacifi c Coast Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year. Facing top Division I competition at

the Nike Cup, UCSD fi nished fourth over-all on the women’s side and fi fth on the men’s side. Both squads would then win the PCSC Championships at Long Beach, recapturing the conference titles they last won in 2007. UCSD sent 26 student-athletes to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Houston, Texas. There, Dan Perdew and Kendall Bohn would re-peat as national champions. Perdew set an NCAA record while winning the 100 freestyle while Bohn picked up the 200 breastroke in fairly comfortable fashion. The women piled up 425 points over the course of the event to fi nish third, match-ing their best fi nish at the D-II level. The men scored 221.5 points to place seventh overall, matching their 2008 performance.

In his fi rst year, McGihon led the Tritons to a pair of team championships in the Pacifi c Collegiate Swim Conference, the fi rst-ever league titles for UCSD. The fol-lowing year, UCSD turned in an outstand-ing farewell performance at the NCAA Division III Championships, and in 2000-01, the teams made a successful debut in the NCAA D-II, with the women fi nishing third and the men’s squad fi nishing eighth. At the 2004-05 NCAA Championships, McGihon directed the women’s team to a third-place fi nish and a Division II best fourth-place fi nish for the men’s squad.

McGihon resides in San Diego, Calif., with his wife Kristi and sons Chase and Blake. Kristi was an alternate for the 2002 USA Bobsled Olympic Team, as well as a mem-ber of the USA Track and Field National Team from 1994-1998.

Corrie Falcon begins her third year as an assistant coach with the

UC San Diego swimming program in 2009-2010. She assists in all aspects

of the program including student-athlete development, recruiting and camps. Falcon is a 2002 graduate of the University of Southern California where she was a four-year scholar-ship swimmer and All-American.

Falcon earned several honors as a collegiate and amateur swimmer. A National team member from 1997-2001, Falcon earned a bronze at the ’99 World University Games, was a two-time Olympic Trials multi-fi nalist, and a US National Champion in the 400 IM. At her alma mater, USC, she was a 2 year team captain, and

earned a Division I NCAA second place fi nish in the 400 IM.

Falcon’s experience includes a two-year stint as an assistant at USC for head U.S. Olympic coach Mark Schubert in 2001-03. Falcon’s expe-rience extends internationally where she coached age groups teams in Australia and England. Falcon is a former head coach at San Diego Mesa Community College.

Falcon enjoys surfi ng, open water swimming and yoga. She resides in San Diego with her husband, Ian.

Matt Macedo is entering his sec-ond year as an assistant coach

for the UCSD Swimming and Diving squad. Macedo started his coaching career in 2004, joining North Coast Aquatics in San Diego as senior assistant and senior development coach at the La Jolla J.C.C. In ad-dition, Macedo was hired in 2005 to co-coach the Carlsbad age group program. In 2007, he joined The Race Club in Florida as head assis-tant coach, with duties that included coaching the World team, which is composed of numerous past and current Olympians. Macedo also

coached at the Beijing Olympics.

Macedo, from San Jose, had an ac-complished career in Pacifi c swim-ming. Macedo went on to Cal where he was a 20-time All-American and graduated with a degree in Public Policy/Public Health. He was a two-time NCAA champion at Cal and member of the U.S.A. National Swim-ming Team. Matt represented the U.S. at the 2001 World University Games and was a fi nalist in the 50 free at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Mark Anderson is in his third year as the diving coach at UCSD.

He arrived at UCSD off a two-year stint where he served as coach for numerous programs. Anderson’s coaching includes the Pacifi c Diving Academy in Carlsbad, the Surf-City Diving in Huntington Beach and at his alma-mater, the University of South Dakota in 2005 and 2006.

While attending USD, he was a seven-time conference fi nalist and three-time All-American. As a four-year letterwinner and a leader in the North Central Athletic Conference, he received the NCC Diver of the Month

award eight times in his career. He was also a three-time NCAA Division II fi nalist on the one and three-meter board.

In his career he has coached and worked with two Junior Olympic Na-tional Champions, three NCAA Final-ists and one NCC Diver of the Year.

Anderson earned a B.B. degree in Music Education from the University of South Dakota in 2006.

As a Junior in 2008-09: Received All-American and All-Conference honors after a tremendous junior sea-son... qualifi ed for the NCAA Division II National Championships where he placed 12th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:04.53 in the consolation fi -nals and a personal best of 2:04.22 in the prelims... also at the NCAA Championships, placed 11th in the

As a Junior in 2008-09: Earned All-Conference accolades following a stellar junior year... recorded a per-sonal best of 1:56.23 in the prelims of the PCSC Championships en route to fi nishing seventh in the 200 IM... also placed seventh in the 100 breast while at the PCSC and ninth in the 200 breast, posting respective times

of 58.63 and 2:10.29 for personal bests... placed 19th in the 200 breast at the Nike Cup with a time of 2:11.68.

As a Sophomore in 2007-08: Posted season-best times in the 50 free, 100 breast, and 200 IM during the Nike Cup with times of 22.09, 59.62, and 1:57.49, respectively... fi nished 6th in the 200 breast at the PCSC Champi-onships with a time of 2:12.65, earn-ing All-Conference honors.

As a Freshman in 2006-07: Earned All-Conference honors at the PCSC Championships... in the 100 breast at the PCSC’s, Islip fi nished eighth with a time of 59.29 in the championship heat.

High School: Attended Plano Senior High School where he fi nished sixth in the 200 medley relay at state, 30th in the nation in the 200 medley and the team fi nished 11th overall at state.

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego swimming and diving team began its 2008-09 season with the annual Blue vs. Gold Ex-hibition meet Oct. 11 at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons split their men’s and women’s teams into two squads apiece, with the Gold squad emerging victorious with a 131-91 margin for the men’s squad and a fi nal score of 131-113 for the women. Steven Hardy led the way with three wins for the Gold team, while Sam Duimovich and Dan Perdew added two victories apiece for Gold. On the women’s side, Kendall Bohn and Shea Kopp each led the Gold team with two wins, while Karla Holman and Alexandra Henley each won two events on the Blue side. The Tritons will next be in action with the Alumni Meet on October 18 at 9:00 a.m.

Bohn won the 50 breast (31.66) and 150 breast (1:45.24), while Shea Kopp won the 50 back (29.15) and 50 free (25.15) Holman and Henley matched the dual victories, with Holman winning in the 150 fl y (1:37.16) and 50 fl y (27.96) and Henley winning the 150 back (1:39.44) and 300 IM (3:27.47) events. Also winning events on the day was Kai-ley Makuta in the 800 free (8:50.51), Anju Shimura in the 200 free (1:57.15), Shannon Simonds in the 400 free (4:16.02), and Au-brey Panis in the 100 free (55.32).

On the men’s side, Hardy repeated his Blue vs. Gold performance from last year, again winning the 50 back (25.40), 150 back (1:29.91) and the 300 IM (3:10.68). Perdew’s victories came in the 50 free (21.87) and 50 fl y (24.55), while Duimovich won in the 200 free (1:49.66) and 400 free (3:56.75). Oth-er winning times from the Gold side were Michael Lorch in the 150 fl y (1:36.60) and Todd Langland in the 100 free (48.61). On the Blue team, Kyle Begovich won the 800 free (8:09.89), Brandon Maryatt won the 50 breast (24.90), and Elden Carpenter came out on top in the 150 breast (1:38.50).

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego swimming and diving team started the 2008-09 season with a victory on Oct. 25 at Canyonview Pool, defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The men’s side won 15-of-16 events, earning 223.5 points to 75.5 for the Athenas. The Triton women were also dominant, winning 14-of-16 events for a 202-90 margin of victory. Dan Perdew and Steven Hardy won three individual events each to pace the men, while Anju Shimura led the way for the women’s team with wins in the 100 back and 200 back events.

The men’s 200 relay team of Hardy, Bran-don Maryatt, Andy Islip, and Todd Langland started things off right with a winning time of 1:37.51. Hardy would also collect wins in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.21, the 200 back in a time of 1:59.10, and the 200 IM at 2:00.09. Dan Perdew would touch fi rst in the 50 free (21.38), 100 free (47.83), and 100 fl y (54.82). The 400 free relay team, comprised of Brandon Maryatt, Todd Langland, Blake Langland, and Perdew would end the day in victory for UCSD with a time of 3:12.60.

Anju Shimura posted the only sub-minute time in the 100 back, fi nishing the event in 59.01, before putting together a winning time of 2:07.99 in the 200 back. Shannon Simonds and Alexandra Henley also posted strong wins for the UCSD women. Simonds’ time of 5:09.44 in the 500 free was almost 10 seconds faster than her next closest competitor, while Henley’s mark of 2:10.71 was nearly four seconds better than runner-up Neda Nguyen in the 200 IM event. The women’s 400 free relay team of Aubrey Pa-nis, Simonds, Ashtyn Douglas, and Shimura would win their event with a time of 3:33.36.

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego swimming and diving teams took part in their fi rst dual meet of the season Nov. 9 against UC Davis and Cal State Bakersfi eld at Can-yonview Pool on the UCSD campus. The Triton women’s team defeated Cal State Bakersfi eld, 185-56, and fell to UC Davis 107-135. The men’s side also picked up a victory over Cal State Bakersfi eld, 145-95, and lost to UC Davis, 92-149. Anju Shimura and Alexandra Henley fi nished 1-2 in the 200 back, with Shimura also serving as part as the winning 400 medley relay team on the women’s side. Carianne Cun-ningham, Holman, and Jennifer Sims put to-gether a strong showing in the 200 fl y event, fi nishing a close 2-3-4 with times of 2:11.82, 2:11.87, and 2:11.98, respectively.

The team of Sam Stromberg, Perdew, Blake Langland, and Todd Langland closed out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay, touching in a time of 1:25.62. Perdew was also victorious in the 50 free at 21.17, while Todd Langland’s win came in the 100 free with a time of 47.22. Elden Carpenter and Brandon Liu also won for the Tritons, with Carpenter fi nishing fi rst in the 200 breast at 2:10.51 and Liu recording a winning score of 258.60 in the one-meter dive.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC San Diego swimming and diving team met Divi-sion I opponent UC Santa Barbara Nov. 14 at Campus Pool on the Gaucho campus. The women’s side won four events during the day, while the Triton men recorded had six swimmers place second in events. Final scores for the day were UCSB 157, UCSD 104 on the women’s side and UCSB 177.5, UCSD 75.4 on the men’s side. Anju Shimu-ra won two events and Alexandra Henley had a fi rst and second-place fi nish for the women, while Steven Hardy recorded two second-place showings for the men.

UC San Diego competitors fi nished 1-2 in the women’s 100 back event, with Shimu-ra winning with a time of 58.63 and Shea Kopp fi nishing second in a time of 1:00.17. Shimura also won the 200 back event with a time of 2:06.03. Henley won the 500 free event in 5:03.70 and fi nished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.93, while team-mate Carianne Cunningham fi nished fi rst in the 200 breast event with a time of 2:25.29. Ashtyn Douglas and Karla Holman each re-corded second-place fi nishes with Douglas clocking in with a time of 53.46 in the 100 free and Holman completing the 100 fl y in a time of 59.62.

On the men’s side, Hardy came in as run-ner-up in both the 200 back and 200 IM events against the Gauchos, recording a time of 1:56.04 in the back and 1:59.35 in the IM event. Elden Carpenter fi nished 2nd in the 200 breast with a time of 2:07.83, while Juan Pablo Carrillo’s time of 59.34 placed him in a second-place time in the 100 breast. Todd Langland’s time of 46.81 in the 100 free, Sam Duimovich’s time of 4:48.45 in the 500 free, and Michael Lorch’s time of 53.82 in the 100 fl y also earned sec-ond-place showing at the meet.

UC San Diego Improve on Previous Finishes at Prestigious Nike Cup; Women Place

LONG BEACH, Calif. – At the Nike Cup event, the UC San Diego squad improved on its 2007 fi nishes with the Triton women swimmers com-ing in fourth overall with 817.5 points, ahead of Nevada, Pacifi c, Loyola Marymount and four-teen other schools. The men’s team came in fi fth overall with 679.5 points, over 200 points ahead of Pacifi c, which fi nished sixth.

On day one Daniel Perdew swam to victory in the 50 free with a fi nals time of 20.44, af-ter having swam a 20.14 in the preliminaries. Todd Langland also recorded a top-ten fi nish in the 50 free, with a time of 20.95 good for ninth overall. The men’s 200 free relay team of Sam Stromberg, Perdew, Blake Langland, and Todd Langland started the day off for UCSD with a third-place fi nish and time of 1:22.61.The women’s 200 free relay team of Shea Kopp, Aubrey Panis, Ashtyn Douglas, and Er-inn Deters fi nished with a second-place time of 1:34.40. Simonds seventh place fi nish came in the 500 free, where she fi nished in a time of 5:02.31. Shimura’s time of 23.85 in the 50 free also earned her seventh-place, while Alex Henley fi nished 10th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.03.

Kendall Bohn recorded the best fi nish for the UCSD women day two, fi nishing second in the 100 breast, while the 200 medley relay fi nished third, and Henley and Shimura each recorded a fourth-place fi nish in individual events. The 200 medley relay team recorded the best fi nish for the men, coming in second to start off the day. Pablo Carrillo followed up his accomplishments with the relay team in the 100 breast, fi nishing fi fth overall.

Bohn recorded a time of 1:03.79 in the 100 breast, improving by over one second from her preliminary time to fi nish second in the event. Teammate Mercedes O’Brien also recorded a top-ten fi nish in the 100 breast, fi nishing sev-enth with a time of 1:05.64. O’Brien was joined by Kopp, Jessica Ferguson, and Aubrey Panis in the 200 medley relay, as the quartet’s time of 1:45.50 was good for third-place. Alexandra Henley came in fourth in the 400 IM with a time

of 4:27.60. Shimura’s fourth-place fi nish was in the 200 free, with a time of 1:51.46, while Panis and Douglas fi nished in a dead heat at seventh and eighth, respectively, with a time of 1:53.31. Shimura also fi nished sixth in the 100 back event with a time of 56.96, while Karla Holman recorded an eighth-place fi nish in the 100 fl y with her time of 57.82.

The 200 medley relay team of Steven Hardy, Carrillo, Perdew, and Todd Langland opened day two of the Nike Cup with a second-place time of 1:32.21 for the Tritons. Carrillo then re-corded a fi fth-place time of 57.58 in the 100 breast, while Perdew went on to fi nish eighth in the 100 fl y in 50.34. Hardy also recorded another top-ten fi nish, with his time of 51.47 securing seventh in the 100 back event. Elden Carpenter and Kyle Begovich fi nished 12th and 13th in the 400 IM with times of 4:11.38 and 4:11.70, respectively.

On day three, Perdew won the 100 free event on the men’s side, while Bohn won the 200 breast event for the women. Both 400 free relay teams also recorded top-fi ve fi nishes to close out the Nike Cup competition. Perdew’s time of 44.78 in the 100 free was good enough for his second victory of the three-day event. The Tritons locked up both of the top spots in the 100 free with Todd Langland fi nishing right after Perdew with a time of 45.02. The 400 free relay team, consisting of Langland, Perdew, along with Brandon Maryatt and Blake Langland, also fi nished second with a time of 3:03.74. Hardy fi nished fi fth in the 200 back event with a time of 1:51.56.

Bohn was one of three Tritons to fi nish in the top-ten as part of the 200 breast event, win-ning with a time of 2:16.16. Neda Nguyen and Carianne Cunningham fi nished sixth and seventh with times of 2:20.14 and 2:23.05, re-spectively, in the same event. The women’s 400 free relay team then put a nice cap on the prestigious meet with a fourth-place fi nish, as Anju Shimura, Ashtyn Douglas, Shannon Si-monds, and Aubrey Panis completed the event with a time of 3:27.00.

TUCSON, Ariz. – The UC San Diego div-ing team fi nished up 2008 at the Wildcat Dive Invitational in Tucson, prepping for the rest of their season against top competition, including the University of Arizona, USC, UNLV, and BYU.

Brandon Liu recorded the best fi nish at the invite for the Tritons, fi nishing 20th in the consolation of the three-meter dive and 21st in the fi nals of the three-meter. Patrick Cohen led the way in the one-meter event with a top-25 fi nish and was followed in the standings by teammates Bryan McGrory, Liu, and Kevin Sullivan.

On the women’s side, it was Danielle Niculescu and Jennifer Lappe representing the Tritons in Arizona. Niculescu and Lappe, both All-Conference recipients last season, fi nished consecutively in both the one-meter fi nals and one-meter consolation events.

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women’s swimming and diving team re-corded a convincing 158-104 decision over conference rival Loyola Marymount Jan. 10 at Canyonview Pool. After falling by a slim 131-128 margin at LMU last season, the Tri-tons responded by winning 11 of 14 events at home, including the fi rst six events of the day. Ashtyn Douglas, Alexandra Henley, Sa-die O’Brien, Anju Shimura, and Jenn Sims all recorded multiple victories in leading UCSD to the win.

“There was really no revenge factor, but we came in here with the attitude that we weren’t going lose,” said head coach Scott McGihon.

UC San Diego got off to a good start, as O’Brien was joined by Shea Kopp, Jessica Ferguson, and Aubrey Panis in winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.69. Henley would follow that up with the fi rst in-dividual win of the day, completing the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:29.90. Douglas’ time of 1:55.05 secured fi rst in the 200 free, while Shimura won the 100 back and Sims won the 200 fl y with times of 58.95 and 2:07.29, respectively.

“Our plan was to win the fi rst fi ve races and hopefully have that shake their confi dence,” said Coach McGihon. “When we were able to do that we took control of the meet.”

Shimura’s second individual win of the day came in the 200 back with a time of 2:07.75. O’Brien picked up her fi rst individual victory of the day in the 200 breast with her time of 2:26.92. Douglas fi nished .13 ahead of LMU’s Jill Dahle, winning the 500 free with a time of 5:12.47, while Sims’ winning time of 59.07 in the 100 fl y accounted for her sec-ond win of the day. Henley closed out the individual competition, completing the 200 IM with a fi rst-place time of 2:10.56.

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego swimming and diving teams completed their home schedule Jan. 11 with a victory over Grand Canyon University at Canyonview Pool. The Triton men posted a 174-24 win, while the women fi nished with a 171-15 score. UCSD swimmers won all 22 events on the day. Dan Perdew and Kyle Begovich each won two individual events on the men’s side. On the women’s side, Alexandra Hen-ley, Aubrey Panis, Shannon Simonds, and Jen Sims each accounted for an individual win, as well as serving as part of winning UCSD relay teams.

The freshman 400 medley relay team of Shea Kopp, Sadie O’Brien, Henley, and Natasha Nguyen demonstrated a glimpse of the bright future of Triton swimming with their win in the 400 medley relay, best-ing UCSD’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ relay teams, as well as rival Grand Canyon, with a time of 4:01.59. The 200 freestyle relay ‘A’ squad of Deters, Simonds, Sims, and Panis later demonstrated their veteran expertise with a winning time of 1:39.24. Henley’s indi-vidual win came in the 200 fl y with a time of 2:13.78. Simonds won the 200 IM in a time of 2:12.16, Sims bested teammate Deters in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.11, and Panis won the 200 back event (2:15.08).

Perdew picked up victories in the 50 and 100 free events in front of the home crowd, clocking in with times of 21.20 and 47.14, respectively. Begovich’s two wins came in the distance events, topping the 1000 free with a time of 9:54.33 and completing the 500 free in 4:49.45, just ahead of Lohse’s time of 4:49.98. Hardy was joined by Pablo Carrillo, Andy Islip, and Todd Langland in winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:31.96. The 200 free relay team of Lang-land, Sam Stromberg, Blake Langland, and Perdew then completed the day in victory, fi nishing with a time of 1:25.01.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UCSD women’s swimming and diving team captured a dra-matic 152-146 win over the University of San Diego on Jan. 17, marking the team’s eighth consecutive year with a win over the cross-town Toreros. The Tritons entered the meet’s fi nal event at a 144-137 disad-vantage, needing a huge win to pull off the come-from-behind victory. UCSD’s 400 free relay ‘A’ and ‘B’ squads provided the nec-essary victory, fi nishing fi rst and second to seal the win. Kendall Bohn, Ashtyn Douglas, Anju Shimura, and Alexandra Henley also won individual events at the meet.

The 200 medley relay squad of Shea Kopp, Sadie O’Brien, Jessica Ferguson, and Au-brey Panis gave UC San Diego a good start on Saturday, winning the opening relay with a time of 1:49.18. Following three straight wins by the Toreros in individual events, Bohn and O’Brien fi nished 1-2 in the 100 breast with times of 1:07.62 and 1:08.16. Douglas was victorious in the 100 free with a time of 53.59, while Shimura’s 2:06.33 in the 200 back and Henley’s fi nals time of 5:05.92 in the 500 free were also good for wins on the day.

Still, the day belonged to the 400 free relay teams. The ‘A’ squad of Shimura, Douglas, Panis, and Shannon Simonds picked up the win with a time of 3:31.33, but the ‘B’ squad of Kopp, Natasha Nguyen, Ferguson, and Erinn Deters was equally impressive, beat-ing USD’s top relay team with their time of 3:35:00.

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC San Diego swim-ming and diving teams competed in a dual meet against UC Irvine and Cal Baptist at Irvine on Jan. 24. The Triton women posted two victories, defeating Cal Baptist 209-82 and host UCI by a 176-124 fi nal score. The men’s squad fell to Cal Baptist, 118-165, and UC Irvine, 96-185. Anju Shimura and Kendall Bohn led the way, winning two events each. On the men’s side, Kneif Lohse, Steven Hardy, and Pablo Carrillo each recorded a second-place fi nish.

The women’s 200 medley relay team got the Tritons off to a strong start, as Shea Kopp, Sadie O’Brien, Jessica Ferguson, and Au-brey Panis won the event with a time of 1:49.30. The 200 free relay team of Shimu-ra, Ashtyn Douglas, Erinn Deters, and Panis also won their event, fi nishing with a time of 1:37.20. Shimura’s dual individual wins came in the 100 back, with a time of 58.13, and the 200 back, with a time of 2:04.90. Bohn won the 100 breast in 1:06.24 and the 200 breast with a time of 2:22.13. Panis, Douglas, and Alexandra Henley also were victorious on the day, winning the 50 free, 100 free, and 400 IM, respectively.

Lohse’s second-place fi nish came in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.22. Carrillo was runner-up in the 100 breast with a time of 57.71, and Hardy fi nished the 100 back with a time of 54.02. The men’s 200 free relay team of Sam Stromberg, Todd Langland, Blake Langland, and Dan Perdew fi nished behind UC Irvine with a time 1:24.10.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The UC San Diego women’s swimming and diving team com-pleted their regular season on Jan. 31 at San Diego State against Wyoming, North-ern Colorado, and host SDSU. The UCSD women’s team defeated Northern Colorado, 213-49, but fell to Wyoming by a 148-114 score and to the Aztecs, 140-122. Anju Shimura was victorious in the 200 back event, while Tritons recorded runner-up fi n-ishes in six other events.

Shimura’s win in the 200 back came with a time of 2:04.23, while the sophomore from Irvine also fi nished second in the 100 back with a time of 58.38. Alexandra Henley fi nished second in 500 free, with a time of 5:01.16, and the 200 IM, with a fi nals time of 2:09.75 and a preliminary mark of 2:07.03. Erinn Deters was the runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 24.55, while Ashtyn Douglas placed second in the 100 free with her time of 53.40. Shimura, Deters, Doug-las, and Aubrey Panis would collectively fi n-ish behind only Wyoming’s ‘A’ team in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:31.35.

Triton Men and Women Capture Title at Pacific Coast Swimming and Diving Championships

Feb. 18-21, 2009

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The UC San Diego swimming and diving teams completed a great showing at the Pacifi c Coast Swimming and Diving Championships in Long Beach on Saturday, with each team recapturing the conference titles they last won in 2007.

The UCSD men’s squad was dominating, totaling 1561 points after four days, over 400 points ahead of second place UC San-ta Cruz. The women’s team fi nished just over 20 points ahead of rival Loyola Mary-mount with 1403 points to LMU’s 1381.

The Tritons got off to an amazing start on day one, with three school records in the four relay events and three new UCSD athletes qualifying for the NCAA National Champion-ships. The women’s 200 medley relay team posted the best fi nish of the day, winning their event with a school record time, while the men’s 200 medley and women’s 800 free also set new UCSD standards. Diver Kevin Sullivan joined the ranks of Tritons heading to Nationals in Houston with his performance on the one-meter board.

Shea Kopp, Mercedes O’Brien, Jessica Fer-guson, and Aubrey Panis won the 200 med-ley relay in a UCSD record 1:45.29. The men’s 200 medley relay of Steven Hardy, Pablo Carrillo, Dan Perdew, and Todd Lang-land responded with their Triton record fi nish of 1:31.37, good for second overall.

Both the women’s and men’s 800 free also fi nished as runners-up. The team of Alex Hen-ley, Panis, Erinn Deters, and Ashtyn Douglas posted another school record with a 7:27.60 mark. The men, represented by Brandon Maryatt, Langland, Michael Lorch, and Kneif Lohse, fi nished with a time of 6:45.76. Lorch and Lohse also picked up their fi rst NCAA qualifying times as part of the team.

On the diving boards, Danie Niculescu fi n-ished fi fth in the women’s three-meter with a score of 358.10. Sullivan secured a 442.80 point total for a third-place fi nish, and was fol-lowed by teammates Patrick Cohen in fourth and Bryan McGrory in fi fth, posting scores of 424.45 and 368.30, respectively.

At the end of day two, both the Triton men and women were at the top of the leaderboard with Lohse, Perdew, and the 200 free relay team each winning their events. The women’s squad received second place fi nishes on day two from Shannon Simonds, Henley, Deters, and the 200 free relay team.

Lohse and Kyle Begovich fi nished 1-2 in the 500 free, recording times of 4:30.56 and 4:37.93, respectively. Perdew won the 50 free with a time of 20.47, while Todd Langland came in fi fth at 20.78. Brandon Maryatt, El-den Carpenter, and Andy Islip placed 5-6-7 in the 200 IM, while Sam Stromberg, Todd and Blake Langland, and Perdew won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:22.10.

Simonds’ time of 5:00.39 was good for sec-ond in the 500 free event. Henley would rep-licate that fi nish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.91. Kendall Bohn fi nished fourth in that same event with her fi nals time of 2:06.97, while posting the best time among all com-petitors during the preliminaries of the event. Deters and Panis fi nished second and third in the 50 free, with Deters posting a time of 23.58 and Panis fi nishing in 24.02. Niculescu also performed well for the diving team, fi n-ishing fourth on the one-meter boards with a score of 366.15. The 200 free relay team of Ferguson, Deters, Simonds, and Panis fi n-ished as runner-up with a time of 1:34.95.

The Triton men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams remained in the lead after day three, with the men extending their ad-vantage and the women’s squad holding off conference rival Loyola Marymount. Lohse posted a winning time of 1:39.57 in the 200 free, while Henley, Bohn, and the 400 medley relay squad also won their events.

Lohse won the 200 free with a time of 1:39.57. Perdew fi nished second in the 100 fl y, but posted a new personal best and UCSD top-ten time at 50.13. Sam Duimovich fi nished third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:07.31, while Hardy was third in the 100 back at 52.12. Brandon Maryatt and Carrillo placed 3-4 in the 100 breast, fi nishing with times of 57.68 and 58.16, respectively. The 400 med-ley relay team was also the bronze fi nisher

on Friday, as Hardy, Carrillo, Maryatt, and Perdew combined for a fi nal time of 3:25.98. McGrory was the top fi nisher for the diving squad, coming in second with 457.80 points on the three-meter boards.

Bohn and Henley won the 100 breast and 400 IM, respectively. Bohn posted a personal best 1:03.54, while Henley entered the Tritons all-time 10 top marks with a time of 4:25.87. Henley and Bohn were joined by Karla Hol-man and Simonds in winning the 400 med-ley relay event with a time of 3:50.98. Sims fi nished second in the 100 fl y with a time of 57.37. Panis was fourth in the 200 free, fi n-ishing in 1:52.65. Kopp nearly joined her teammates with a top fi ve fi nish, placing sixth with a time of 59.27 in the 100 back.

On the fi nal day, Perdew was the Triton’s top fi nisher, winning the 100 free event. Henley, Bohn and Sims each won their events during the fi nal day of competition.

Perdew’s win in the 100 free came with a time of 45.26. Todd Langland fi nished third in the same event, fi nishing in 45.56. Begovich was runner-up in the 1650 free with a time of 15:55.23, followed by teammate Lohse in third with his time of 16:03.26. Hardy was second in the 200 back at 1:52.10. Carpen-ter and Duimovich posted team-best times in the 200 breast and 200 fl y at 2:05.81 and 1:55.31, respectively. Both placed fourth in their events. The 400 free relay team of Lohse, Blake Langland, Todd Langland, and Perdew fi nished second in the champion-ships’ fi nal event.

Henley won the 200 back with a time of 2:01.82. Bohn won the 200 breast in 2:16.22, with O’Brien fi nishing second and Carrie Cunningham coming third, posting respective times of 2:22.03 and 2:22.13. Sims topped the 200 fl y event in 2:03.62, with Holman fi nishing third at 2:08.38. Panis, Deters, and Douglas fi nished 3-4-5 in the 100 free and Elizabeth Strub placed sixth in the 1650 free with a time of 17:48.31. Deters, Douglas, Simonds, and Panis’ second-place time of 3:29.14 in the 400 free relay helped cap the conference win for UCSD.

HOUSTON, Texas – The UC San Diego swimming and diving team, powered by fi nal day repeat national championship perfor-mances from Dan Perdew and Kendall Bohn, fi nished third in the women’s division, with the men fi nishing seventh at the 2009 NCAA Divi-sion II National Championships.

The women, who placed eight individuals in fi nals or consolation fi nals and broke three more school records on day four, piled up 425 points over the course of the event. The third place fi nish, one spot better than 2008, matched their best ever at the Division II level and fell just short of second place Wayne State’s 453.50. Drury (618.5 pts.) ran away with the title.

The Triton men, hurt by a second relay dis-qualifi cation in the 400 free relay Saturday morning, scored 221.5 points while equal-ing their placement of a year ago. The two DQs likely kept them from fi nishing as high as fourth. Drury, with 543 points, also won the men’s team title.

“It was great to be able to be a signifi cant contributor at the fastest D-II meet in his-tory,” said head coach Scott McGihon. “We closed out the meet swimming as well as we could possibly have expected.”

The highlight of the fi rst day that saw six school records broken was the gold medal performance of the women’s 200 medley relay team, composed of sophomore Anju Shimura, freshman Mercedes O’Brien, soph-omore Jessica Ferguson and senior Aubrey Panis. with a school record-breaking time of 1:42.56.

The Tritons nearly had a second national crown but defending champion Perdew had to settle for silver in the 50 freestyle despite clocking a blazing 19.69 to erase his own school mark. He fi nished .03 seconds behind Goran Majlat of Limestone College. Team-mate Todd Langland was 14th in the same event (20.49).

Perdew’s female counterpart in the 50 free-style, senior Erin Deters, posted a new UCSD

standard of her own, going 23.20 while taking sixth place. Panis was 12th in 23.65.

Versatile freshman Alex Henley served notice that she is a force to be reckoned with this week, setting a new school record (2:01.79) while racing to third in the 200 individual med-ley. On or near the lead all the way, Henley narrowly missed nabbing a title in her fi rst NCAA event.

UCSD’s other individual school record was registered in the 1,000 freestyle by senior Kneif Lohse, whose 9:15.69 garnered sev-enth place and lifted him past Devin Spicer on the all-time list by .16 seconds.

Junior diver Kevin Sullivan, who feels his best event is the one-meter board, claimed 10th on the three-meter, racking up 340.35 points.

On day two for the women’s side, UCSD opened the night with a silver medal effort in the 200 freestyle relay, with the quartet of Shimura, Ashtyn Douglas, Deters and Panis touching in 1:32.16 to knock down the oldest existing women’s relay mark by more than a second and a half. The women closed out

their night with a sparkling 3:44.64 swim in the 400 medley relay, the team of Henley, Jenn Sims, Bohn and Deters taking over three seconds off the standard set in 2008.

The men were equally as impressive. The foursome of Sam Stromberg, Todd Langland, Blake Langland and Perdew came home third in the 200 freestyle relay, turning in a time of 1:20.90 in the fi nal after blazing to a 1:20.02 in the prelims. Perdew and Todd Langland returned in the concluding 400 medley relay, joining Steven Hardy and Juan Pablo Carrillo for a fi fth place fi nish in 3:17.44. For leadoff man Hardy, tonight’s race carried added sig-nifi cance. After being disqualifi ed for a false start in Wednesday night’s 200 medley relay, he wanted to come back strong.

Day two was certainly not only about the relays. The Tritons scored chunks of points in the 200 freestyle, producing new school marks in both the men’s and women’s races. Panis, the senior from Anaheim, lowered her own school record in the prelims and returned to do it again in the fi nal, going 1:50.69 while placing fi fth. In the same event, Deters was seventh, Douglas 11th and Shimura 14th. An-

other senior, Lohse turned the same back-to-back record trick on the men’s side. He wound up sixth in a blanket fi nish, clocking 1:37.80 in the fi nal. Sophomore Brandon Maryatt took 10th.

Henley, third in Wednesday’s 200 individual medley, notched sixth Thursday in the 400 in-dividual medley, shaving more than two sec-onds off her prelim time, covering the distance in 4:24.48, the second best time in UCSD his-tory.

Three Triton swimmers reached the consola-tion fi nals in the 100 butterfl y. Sims was 10th (56.24) and Bohn 15th while Perdew claimed 16th (49.90) on the men’s side.

The squads came out of day three with three additional school records to add to the haul of 11 over the fi rst two days as well as a pair of top four relay fi nishes.

Henley and Lohse got things going early. The precocious Henley, making her third individual fi nal of the meet, swam the third fastest time in school history (4:56.35) while fi nishing fi fth in the 500 freestyle. In the same event for the men, Lohse took sixth, clocking 4:29.6 after snagging his third school mark of the meet with an ultra-quick 4:26.81in the prelims. He was disappointed about his performance in the fi nals.

“I think that’s the fi rst time in my life I’ve gone slower in the fi nals than the prelims,” he la-mented. “I was stoked about my morning swim, it was exactly what I wanted to do and I thought I had a legit chance at a national championship. I think I just went out too fast.”

The Triton women continued to pile up points in the individual events. Shimura (55.76) and Kopp (57.02) were fourth and 11th in the 100

backstroke, Sims (2:02.84) and junior Carianne Cunningham (2:06.72) placed sixth and 15th in the 200 butterfl y and Bohn, the defending NCAA champion in the 200 breaststroke (which she’ll swim Saturday night), led three UCSD point scorers in the 100 breaststroke.

The fastest qualifi er in the prelims, Bohn was second in a multi-swimmer photo fi n-ish, posting a time of 1:03.10. A repeat of her morning mark (1:02.99) would have given her the championship. O’Brien put on a good show out of Lane eight in her fi rst NCAA fi nal, grabbing fi fth (1:03.61) and another freshman, Neda Nguyen was 13th. Bohn was upset at the missed op-portunity but philosophical afterward.

“That race was all sorts of crazy,” said the Manhattan Beach native. “I was really excited and just lost focus a little. I was thinking about racing and didn’t concen-trate enough on my turns which were not well-timed—but it was fun and I’ll take second place. That’s not bad.”

Two Triton men fi nished 11th while swimming in consolation fi nals—Hardy in the 100 back-stroke (49.87) and Carrillo in the 100 breast-stroke (56.32). It was a breakthrough for Har-dy who dipped under the 50-second barrier for the fi rst time.

Earlier in the day, Sullivan had another solid outing, registering 359 points to fi nish 11th on the one-meter board. He placed 10th on the three-meter on Wednesday.

The concluding 800 freestyle relays showed the Tritons at their record-breaking best. The women’s unit of Panis, Deters, Shimura and Douglas smashed the school record by more than four seconds (7:23.54) but had to settle for second. Drury, which had posted a 7:21.89 mark in a timed morning heat, got the crown with being there to provide competition as Deters steamed home on the anchor leg, far ahead of her in-pool rivals.

chor slot—outswam its eighth seed, setting a new UCSD standard of 6:39.34 while netting fourth place. For Lohse, it was a fi tting way to wrap up day three.

“It was nice to end on a high note, especially as part of a relay team in a dogfi ght,” said the free-spirited senior. “Brandon and Michael needed some hardware and it was my duty to close it out strong.”

Two swimmers who certainly met high ex-pectations on the fi nal day were Perdew and Bohn. Saturday night, both successfully defended crowns they won last year in Co-lumbia, Missouri. Perdew, who earlier in the meet was nosed out in the 50 freestyle, went wire-to-wire to smoke an elite 100 freestyle fi eld in an NCAA record 43.30.

“That was my goal at the beginning of the year—to break the national record,” said the junior from LaVerne. “But to actually do it, I can’t really describe how great it feels. To win one is all you can really ask for, but to do it twice, especially for our seniors who are really my class—well, I had a lot of help on this one. I told [assistant coach] Matt [Mace-do] that I was going to make everyone hurt the fi rst 50 and see what happens coming home. I think my two strengths are speed and having what it takes to close out a race. It worked out for me tonight.”

Bohn, like Perdew came in as a favorite and had already been nosed out and relegated to runner-up in the shorter version of her specialty. There would be none of that on this night, however, as she also led block-to-wall, clocking 2:15.55 while winning the 200 breaststroke in fairly comfortable fashion. UCSD had four point-scorers in the event with Neda Nguyen (5th) and O’Brien (11th) and Cunningham (13th) following Bohn.

“I have to say winning this year was more of a relief,” said the senior from Manhattan Beach. “Last year I wasn’t really expecting anything, so I was really excited. This year, I was favored and wanted pretty badly to go out on a good note. I’m proud of myself and happy with the last race of my career.”

McGihon was thrilled with the accomplishments of his two stars.

“It’s very diffi cult to repeat in anything and to have two do it on the same night, that made it extra special. Perdew get-ting the national record was icing on the cake,” said McGi-hon.

Perdew and Bohn were hardly the only luminaries for UCSD. In the women’s 200 back-stroke, Shimura fi nished 4th in the school record time of 1:59.56. She erased a record set in the prelims by team-mate Henley who wound up one spot behind her in the fi nal. For the multi-talented Henley, it was her fourth indi-vidual fi nal of the meet. Anoth-er freshman, Kopp took 16th. Panis closed out her career with a 15th in the 100 freestyle (52.09).

On the men’s side, Hardy add-ed to an already solid meet by grabbing 11th in the 200 backstroke with a personal best of 1:49.66. Juniors El-den Carpenter (2:04.13) and Carrillo (2:04.53) were 11th and 12th respectively in the 200 breaststroke. Earlier in the day, Lohse, who racked up three school records this week, took 15th in the 1,650 freestyle (15:46.60).

In the fi nal event of the eve-ning, the UCSD foursome of Shimura, Simonds, Douglas and Deters delivered a third school mark (3:24.24) while fi nishing third in the 400 free-style relay.

This is UCSD Athletics...

• Triton teams have captured 29 National Championships while 37 teams have fi nished as National Runners-Up. 44 others have achieved National Third Place honors. All told, UCSD has won a total of 171 national, regional, and conference championships.

• Individually, 130 Triton student-athletes have captured National Championships and a remarkable 990 student-athletes have been named to All-America teams.

• UCSD student-athletes have excelled academically as well, earning 23 prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships and 140 Academic All-America selections. Consistently, over 55 percent of the student-athletes earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, placing them on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

• In 2008, UCSD was ranked fi rst in Division II and 20th overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association Power Rankings, which are based on student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength, and athletic prowess of the university.

• In 2008-09, UCSD posted a Seventh Place Finish out of over 300 schools in the Learfi eld Sports Director’s Cup, an award emblematic of the best overall athletics department in the country. Earl Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March 2000. Since his arrival, the UC San Diego athletics department has been nationally recognized for its academic and athletic achievements on numerous occasions. Under his guidance, the 23-sport program has made a very successful transition from the NCAA Division III ranks to Division II. In fact, UC San Diego has surpassed all expectations at the D-II level, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001.

Since moving to Division II in 2000, UC San Diego has been ranked among the top six programs in the country on seven different occasions. In two of those fi nishes, UCSD was the national runner up. UC San Diego also won four straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioners Cup titles in 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09, an award that recognizes the best overall athletics program in the conference. In 2008, UC San Diego was ranked No. 1 in Division II and No. 20 overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Collegiate Power Rankings, which comprehensively measures student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess.

Edwards has served on many regional and national committees and organizations. Currently, he serves on the Executive Council for the CCAA and he served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) from 2003-07. Edwards was the president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and has severed on numerous other NCAA committees, including the Division II Management Council, the Division II Championships and Minority Opportunities and Interest, the Walter Byers Scholarship and Committee for Women’s Athletics. He has published several articles in Athletic Management and was featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue. In 2007 he was selected Athletic Director of the Year for the West Region by the NACDA.

A 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Edwards earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He then went on to receive his masters in Sports

Administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1973. In addition to working as athletics director at East Stroudsburg University and UC San Diego, he has athletics administration experience at the University of Massachusetts, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, and Drexel University.

Located on the eastern end of campus, between Eleanor Roosevelt College and Warren College, the Canyonview Aquatic Center features two outdoor, Olympic-Size Pools, which can be divided into 8 lanes of 50 meters in length or 19 lanes of 25 yards in length. The west pool is home to the UCSD men’s and women’s water polo teams, as well as the men’s and women’s swimming teams. The east pool is used for recreational swimmers in addition to the UCSD men’s and women’s diving teams who practice and compete while the diving boards and platforms used by the UCSD Diving Teams are located in the complex on the east side.

Two integral parts of the UC San Diego athletics department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports.

The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are planned and monitored out by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance. Mamula brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics and represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room, which is over 12,000 square feet in size and features state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and fi rst class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete, helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletics Department as one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the country.

The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists.

The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program, where some of the athletic training students fulfi ll their clinical experience. Additionally, the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation.

The University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area.

In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years.

Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton

teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to fi nd out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food

for the parents.

In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005.

Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefi t the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.
