2009 Season Outlook

Willamette volleyball enters the 2009 season with just four returning players. Head coach Tom Shoji hopes that the combination of these returning athletes and eleven newcomers will be what WU needs to take the program to the next level. Leading the way for the Bearcats are seniors Jessie McGraw and Julie Stutzman. McGraw was an Honorable Mention All-NWC selection in 2008. She has accumulated 506 kills and 506 digs during her Willamette career. Stutzman returns to the Bearcats after missing the 2008 season while she studied abroad in Austria. Kellie Menghini (So.) and Annika Moffett (So.) are the other two returning players for the young Bearcats. Menghini saw action in 33 games as a freshman in 2008. Moffett recorded 89 kills last season and will play opposite for the Bearcats this season. The Bearcats’ roster is full of new faces. Junior transfer Molly Blankenship comes to Willamette following two seasons at Spokane Community College. Ten freshmen from seven different states fill the final spots on the roster. Brigit Miller and Nicole Mertens both come to WU from Olympia High School. Madisyn Leenstra, from Bellingham, Wash., will be a middle hitter for the Bearcats.

Two freshmen, Jaci Abeloe and Natalee Uhlich, join Willamette after playing high school volleyball in Medford, Ore. and Yamhill, Ore., respectively. Josephine Johnston comes to WU from Florence, Mont. At 6’1”, Johnston is one of three Bearcats that are over six feet tall. Rounding out the 2009 roster are Danica Reed (Arvada, Colo.), Chelsie Mow (Honolulu, Hawaii), Emily Michelsen (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Kathy Lee Glenn (Murrieta, Calif.). The Bearcats participate in the Boxer Kickoff Tournament in Forest Grove, Ore., early in the season. After a preseason that keeps the Bearcats close to home, WU begins conference play on Sept. 18 at Whitman College. Two conference opponents, Pacific Lutheran University (13th) and University of Puget Sound (19th), are ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll.

Sophomore Annika Moffett played in 66 games for the Bearcats in 2008.

Senior Julie Stutzman (left) returns to the Bearcats after a year abroad.

Asst. Coach & What is a Bearcat

Left: A bearcat (bingturong) lives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia.

Right: The F8F Bearcat was designed to meet the Navy’s need for aircraft carrier protection.

Bearcat is another name for the Binturong, a viverrid mammal from Southeast Asia. It is neither a bear nor a cat. Instead, the name is a simple translation of the Chinese word for panda-xiong mao, which means “bear-cat.” The Bearcat is a nocturnal mammal that sleeps on branches and primarily eats fruit. It is a boisterous creature known to make chuckling noises when happy and wailing sounds when upset. The Bearcat is the size of a large cat, weighing 20-30 pounds. In athletics, Willamette is one of eleven collegiate teams with the Bearcat as their mascot. Most notable of these eleven is the NCAA Division I University of Cincinnati. Within the military, the F8F Bearcat is a single-engine fighter aircraft that was used the United States Navy in 1940s. The Navy’s elite Blue Angels flew in Bearcats.

Conference and National Affiliations

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over425 members and is the largestNCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with anathletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho,Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff careabout the well-being of student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Northwest Conference The nine private collegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leaguesin the nation. The NWC isnationally competitive in abroad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 83 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washingtonare Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitmanand Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and thenreturned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. TheCollege of Idaho withdrewfrom the conference in 1978.Whitworth dropped out in1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. TheNWC offers championships

in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to formthe Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA.
