Willamette has a reputation for fi nancial stability. Salem, the state capital, is the second-largest city in Oregon, with a populationof about 147,000. Dr. M. Lee Pelton was appointed the 22nd presidentof Willamette University in July, 1999. Under Pelton’sleadership, the University has increased its academic profi le, successfully employing strategies to attract the best facultyandthebrighteststudentsfromthestate,thenationandtheworld.Since2001,WillametteUniversityhasbeen rankedatoptier liberalartscollegebyU.S.NewsandWorldReport.PresidentPeltonholdsadoctoratefromHarvardUniversityand an undergraduate degree in English and psychology

fromWichitaStateUniversity,wherehegraduatedmagnacumlaudein1974.Hisareaof academicfocusis19thcenturyBritishproseandpoetry.Heservedasdeanof thecollegeatColgateUniversity(1988-91)andDartmouthCollege(1991-98).AtHarvard,hetaughtin the English Department and was the dean of one of Harvard’s 13 undergraduatecolleges. He continues to teach at Willamette in a variety of subjects ranging from 1stcenturyAthenstopost-apartheidSouthAfrica.

MarkMajeskibeganhistenurewithWillametteUniversityin October of 2000, following fi ve years as athletic director at the University of California, Santa Cruz and four yearsas assistant athletic director at Menlo College. A formerbasketball, track and softball coach, Majeski also workedvenuemanagementandoperationsforthe1994FIFAMen’sSoccerWorldCupandthe1996AtlantaOlympicGames.Healsowas involved at thenational level as amemberof theNCAADivisionIIImen’stenniscommittee.Hereceivedan

undergraduatedegreeinjournalismfromMenloCollegeandcompletedamaster’sdegreeinhighereducationadministrationfromSanJoseStateUniversity.AtWillamette,Majeskioversees20varsityathleticteams,withtheBearcatscompetinginNCAADivisionIIIandtheNorthwestConference,aswellastheIntercollegiateRowingAssociation.Inadditionto his NCAA committee work, he has been the basketball liaison between the NWCcoachesandathleticdirectors.Majeski lives inSalemwithhiswife,Deniseand their son,Jack,age1.

The Charles Bowles Track, located insideMcCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facilitythat showcases the fi nish line when WillametteUniversity is the host for cross country meets.In 2005, Willamette hosted the Charles BowlesInvitational for the 31st year and also hostedtheNorthwestConferenceandNCAARegionalmeets. The track also is home to Willamette’shighly-regarded track and fi eld teams. Ogdahl Field at McCulloch Stadium is thehome fi eld for the Willamette football team. Itis one of the top NCAA Division III facilitiesin the Northwest. It has the atmosphere of anoldstadium,buthasaFieldTurf playingsurface,spaciouslockerroomsandmeetingrooms. Located near McCulloch Stadium is Roy S.“Spec”KeeneStadiumatJohnLewisField, thehomeof Bearcatbaseball.Thestadiumfeatureschairbackseating inpartof thegrandstandandanoverallcapacityof 1,000. Theentirefootball,track,crosscountryandbaseball complex is adjacent to Bush’s PasturePark.Theparkhostscrosscountrymeetsonitswidepathsandalsoisknownforitsartexhibits,rosegarden,treesandexpansesof openland. McCulloch Stadium is located two blocksfromtheWillamettecampusandjustoneblockfrom Salem Hospital. The stadium seats about2,400 fans and has lights for night games. Thestadiumalso includes an athletic training room,which allows Willamette athletes to receive on-siteattentionandtreatment.

LocatedintheLestleJ.SparksCenteronthemain campus are offi ces for the Department of Athletics,classroomsandbasketballcourts.TheSparks Center also includes the offi ces of theDepartment of Exercise Science, plus locker

rooms, handball and racquetball courts, and aweight lifting and fi tness center. AttachedtotheSparksCenterisConeFieldHouse,wheremen’sandwomen’sbasketballandvolleyballplay.Thearenaseats2,500fans. Also connected to the Sparks Center is theWU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming.The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, alsomaybeseenfromaviewingareainthelobby. Near the Sparks Center is Sparks Field, anartifi cial turf facility for men’s and women’s soccer. Sparks Field is equipped with lights fornightgamesandseats500spectactors. ClosetotheSparksCenterandSparksFieldare six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s andwomen’s tennis teams host meets during thespringeachyear. Ontheeastsideof campusistheWillametteSoftball Complex. It includes covered dugouts,battingcages,ascoreboardandbleachers. The WU men’s and women’s golf teamsusually practice at Illahe Hills Country Club orCreekside Golf Club. Members of the men’sand women’s rowing teams have their ownboathouseandholdworkoutsontheWillametteRiverindowntownSalem.

Tricia Wright is in her fi fth season asthe head volleyball coach at WillametteUniversity.HeroverallrecordatWillametteis 49-48. Wright joined the Bearcats afterserving as an assistant volleyball coach atNewMexicoStateUniversityforfouryears. In 2004, Wright led the Bearcats to a19-6 overall record and a 13-3 mark inthe Northwest Conference. The Bearcatsfi nished in second place in the NWC. The 2005 season was a rebuilding year for theBearcats, who continue to feature a youngteamastheybegintheir2006schedule. As an assistant coach at New MexicoState, Wright helped the Aggies win the2001 Sun Belt West Division title. It wasthe fi rst conference championship for theNMSUteam.

Wright graduated from the Universityof La Verne (Calif.) in 1990. While at LaVerne, shecompeted involleyball, softball,basketball and track and fi eld at the NCAADivisionIIIlevel. WrightwasLaVerne’sSportswomanofthe Year in 1989, capping a year in whichshe was the conference’s Most ValuablePlayerandwasnamedNCAADivisionIIIAll-America involleyball.Shealsoexcelledin track and fi eld as a two-time Division IIInational champion in the javelin. She wasan All-America selection three times intrack and fi eld. Wright was inducted intotheLaVerneHallof Famein1998.

Megan Fitzsimmonsjoins the Bearcatvolleyball staff thisyear as an assistantcoach.Fitzsimmonsgraduated from theUniversity of Port-land,whereshehadashortstintplayingmiddleblockerwith

thevolleyball team.Duetoseveral injuries,her collegiate athletic careerwas cut short.However, she continued her involvementin volleyball by coaching. She has coachedformultiple teamsover thepast fewyears,including Spokane Players VBC, GonzagaPreparatory High School, Spokane SplashVBC, Bridgetown VBC and Salem VBC.Fitzsimmons was a graduate assistant inathletics at Eastern Washington University,where she received a master’s degree inAthleticAdministration. In addition tohercurrent coaching duties, she works as themarketingcoordinatorforBearcatAthletics.

Roni Schneider isback at Willametteand is an assistantcoachwiththeWUvolleyball programafter a successfulcareer as a player.In 2005, playing atthe libero position,Schneider led the

Willamette defense, recording 530 digsto achieve Second Team All-Conferencehonors.Shealso led theNWC indigs anddigspergame.Duringa2005matchagainstGustavus-Adolphus,Schneiderrecorded43digs to achieve fi rst place in the Willamette recordbookfordigsinasinglematch.Hereffortsover two seasonswith theBearcatsyielded a career average of 5.73 digs pergame.Schneiderbeganhercollegiatecareerat nearby Chemeketa Community College,alsoinSalem,Ore.Sherecordedover1,100digsinhertwoyearsatChemeketa,puttingher in fourth place on CCC’s all-time digslist.SchneideriscurrentlyattendingWesternOregon University and plans to become aphysicaleducationteacher.

Smith also competes as a member of theWillamette track and fi eld team and is an active member ofWU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Smithwasathree-sportathleteandvaledictorianatGlideHS.

Lyamin transferred toWillamette fromBigBendComunityCollege in Moses Lake, Wash. As a sophomore at BBCC,she earned the Most Valuable Player Award and receivedtheScholasticAthleteAward.Lyamin joinsayoungBearcatteam,sohertwoyearsof juniorcollegecompetitionwillbeaplusforWU.Herlevelof experiencewillallowhertoplayright away. She has good defensive skills and will help theBearcatsatthedefensivespecialistandliberopositions.

Dr. Blake NonweilerDr.NonweilergraduatedfromtheUniversityof TexasSouthernMedicalCenterinJune,1989.Hecompleteda fellowship in Sports Medicine and ArthroscopicSurgeryattheUniversityof WesternOntario(London,Ontario, Canada) in July, 1995. He has been in pri-vate practice sinceAugust 1995.Dr.Nonweiler lives inSalemwithhiswife,Becky,andtheirthreechildren.

Willamette is a member of theNationalCollegiateAthleticAssociation and competes inDivision III, which has over425membersandisthelargestNCAA division. The collegesin Division III place a priorityon the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successfulcompletion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment inwhich a student-athlete’s activities with anathleticteamareseenasanintegralpartof hisorhereducationalexperience.Membersin Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III donot receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willametteand other NCAA Division IIImembersencouragestudentstoparticipate by maximizing thevarietyof athleticopportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willametteoften sends its teams to California, Idaho,WashingtonandTexasforin-regiongames. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity andgender equity among student-athletes andstaff.InDivisionIII,employeescareaboutthewell-beingof theirstudent-athletes.

affiliations

Thenineprviatecollegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that formthe Northwest ConferencearebuildingareputationfortheNWCasoneof thetopNCAA Division III leaguesin the nation. The NWC isnationally competitive in abroadspectrumof sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferencesin the western United States. The NWC’scurrentmembersinOregonareWillamette,George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washingtonare Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, plusWhitmanandWhitworth. The charter members in 1926 includedWillamette, College of Idaho (AlbertsonCollege), Linfield, Pacific, and the College of PugetSound(UPS).AlbanyCollegewasaddedin1931andwasamemberforseven

years, then departed andreturned in 1949 as LewisandClarkCollege.Thenextmember, Pacific Lutheran,joined in 1965, followedby Whitworth in 1970. TheCollege of Idaho withdrewin1978.Whitworthdroppedoutin1984,butreturnedin1988. Menlo College joined

theNWCin2006infootballonly. The NWC originally sponsored athleticcompetition for men’s sports only, butjoinedforceswiththeWomen’sConferenceof Independent Colleges in 1984 to formtheNorthwestConferenceof IndependentColleges.ThenamewasshortenedbacktotheoriginalNorthwestConferencein1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Members knew the move wouldfosterequity, sportsmanshipandagenuineconcernforallstudent-athletes.
