Though the rules of the game have been in place for nearly 150 years,

everything about soccer continues to evolve, including the facilities and

playing surfaces. Northern Illinois has taken the next step in that evolution

with the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

HEAD COACH ERIC LUZZI

a for the game.

a for the players.

Talk to anyone who knows Northern Illinois Head Men’s

Soccer Coach Eric Luzzi, and those two points surface almost

immediately.

“Ericisaguythatcaresabouthisplayers,”wereamongthefirst

words to come from Northwestern’s head men’s soccer coach

Tim Lenahan on hearing that Luzzi had been named the eighth

head coach in NIU history.

Mike Avery, the leader of Valparaiso’s men’s soccer program

added, “Eric is very smart, speaks well, is a great teacher,

works very hard, and has a great passion for the game and the

players.”

It was those attributes and others that convinced NIU Associate

Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher to promote

Luzzi from associate head coach to head coach on July 1, 2009.

2009 NIU SOCCER2009 NIU SOCCERHEAD COACH ERIC LUZZI

“As our assistant and most recently, our associate head coach, Eric has had a great opportunity to work with and learn from [former head coach] Steve Simmons as they built a championship program at NIU,” Comphersaid.“IamconfidentEricwillcarryonthewinningtraditionof Northern Illinois men’s soccer and that, under his leadership, we will move to the next level. “

Luzzi was promoted to associate head coach of the Huskies in March 2009, a reward for his commitment and loyalty to NIU during his tenure. In 2006, he helped guide Northern Illinois to the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championships. That year, under the tutelage of Luzzi, goalkeeper Joe Zimka set an NCAA record for goals allowed average, and the Huskies set the NIU record for shutouts in a season with 14. In 2008, Luzzi was part of the staff that coached the Huskies to eight shutouts, a win over No. 2-ranked SMU, and a trip to the MAC Championship game for the second time in three years.

“All the pieces are here to continue competing for championships,” Luzzi said. “We have great facilities, we have been in the top-25 forthelastfiveyears, wehaveatopschedule, and, most importantly, we have a terrificgroup of committed student-athletes.”

A consummate Chicagoan, Luzzi followed up a stellar prep goalkeeping career at St. Ignatius High School as a four-year letterman and starting keeper at Saint Mary’s (Minnesota). His résumé includes two campaigns as head coach for Schaumburg High School prior to

hisreturntohisalmamater,wherehespentfiveseasonsguidingtheCardinals.

“We’re in Chicagoland, and that’s a big deal because this is my home,” Luzzi said. “The fact I’m able to stay here and now be the leader of a program that I’ve invested so much in over the last three years is exciting.”

Compher agreed that Luzzi’s Chicago ties were a large factor in the decision to promote the 33-year-old.

“He is a Chicago native with deep roots in the soccer community in this area, going back not only to his days as a high school coach, but to his days as a high school player,” Compher said.

Despitelivingintheareamuchofhis life,Luzzididn’tmakehisfirsttrip to DeKalb until June of 1999. Upon arrival, he saw a program he dreamed of one day leading.

“I remember thinking to myself, `the potential for this place is incredible,’ and how Northern Illinois should be competing for championships every single year,” Luzzi said. “The fact that literally 10 years to the week after that, I have the opportunity to lead the team in competing for those championships is special.”

The son of Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA) Hall of Famer and long-time St. Ignatius head coach Jim Luzzi, the younger Luzzi has also logged seven summers working with the Olympic Development Program (ODP), including the United States Soccer Federation’s Region II. In the winter of 2006, Luzzi was named head goalkeepers coach for USSF Region II ODP. During the summer of 2007, Luzzi traveled to France with the U-18 ODP squad as an assistant coach.

The Huskies’ newest head coach holds a USSF National “A” License, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and Level III National Goalkeeping License, a USSF Youth License and a Dutch Soccer Federation Youth CoachingCertificate.A1997graduateofSaintMary’s,Luzziearneda bachelor of arts in social science education and will complete his master’s in human development from SMU this December.

Luzzi married the former Kim Rodr in May of 2009. The two live in DeKalb with their dog Bob.

HEAD COACH ERIC LUZZI

“First of all Eric is a great guy, and I think that the number one thing with players is that they don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Eric is a guy that cares about his players. I really respect him, having gotten to know him at some of our camps and on the recruit-ing trail. He’s very knowledgeable, and a greatfit.SteveSimmonshasdoneagreatjob and it’s only natural that Eric continue that.”

“I’m excited for the future of NIU men’s soccer with the hiring of Eric Luzzi to lead the Huskies. I think the combination of Jeff Compher and Eric Luzzi can take the program to new heights. I believe that’s the kind of one-two punch that players and fans will be thrilled with.” ‘

quotes on LUZZI

What aspects the program will stay constant with you taking over as head coach?“Our standards are always going to be extremely high. There’s an expectation of our players thateverytimewesteponthefield, whetherit’sforpracticeoramatch, thatwecompetehard. There’s an expectation that our guys care about each other, and that they give of themselves for the team. Things like that are not going to change.”

What will change from when your mentor and friend Steve Simmons was head coach?“I am a different person than Steve, and I have a different personality. Because of that, the route to attaining the high standards we’ve always held is going to be a little different. Whenever you have a head coaching transition, even one as smooth as this has been, things will change in a lot of day-to-day ways. It’s an environmental change that I’m looking forward to, and I think that the guys are excited about, too.”

What have you learned in your seven seasons as a head coach that you will apply at NIU?“The last place I was at was a small school, with 1,500 kids. The school in general had a very tight community, family, feel to it. We extended that to our team. Coming here, it was something we started to do the last year or so, we are going to build a team in the truest sense of the word. A team to the point where everybody is invested, on the same page, and they care about their teammates as much as they care about themselves, which is sometimes hard to do in this day and age. We have the guys with the right personality and the right mentality who are willing to buy into that.”

What are the team goals heading into the 2009 season?“I don’t think it works if the coaching staff just goes out there and sets goals that some of the guys on the team may not buy into, or may not be what they want. We will spend a good chunk of time toward the end of preseason on goals. As a collective group, we will chart our course for the season. Based on what I know of our players, their

personalities, their mentalities, and some individual conversations about what we want to achieve, those goals will be very lofty.”

What makes the ideal Huskie soccer player?“They have to have certain aspects of their personality and mentality. Those aspects are a strong desire to win and compete no matter what the situation, an openness and a willingness to care aboutotherpeopleasmuchasyoucareaboutyourself, awillingnesstosacrificephysicallyforthe sake of the greater good, and a desire to be a part of something that’s very special. Those aretheelementsofthepersonalityandmentalitythatallofourplayershave.Onthefield,we’rea Division I team, so they have to bring something athletically, technically, tactically. Right now, we have a pretty good puzzle put together with the soccer pieces. It’s those other aspects that we really key on.”

What draws so many top-level student-athletes, coaches, and professors to Northern Illinois University and DeKalb?“DeKalb is a great college town. It has all the traditional feelings of a college town. You know that you are in a city where the whole town revolves around our university. When you live here, you also know that 25 minutes away is the western suburbs of Chicago, and that an hour away is the heart of one of the best cities in the world. It’s a quick drive or a quick train ride to go from our college town to one of the most exciting, vibrant, urban landscapes in the world. That unique geography has fostered a wonderful environment for creating a variety of experiences over the course of four years.”

Luzzi helped coached the Huskies to a school-record 14 shutouts in 2006.

scott dONNELLy

Inmanyways,thecareeroffirst-yearNorthernIllinoisAssistant Coach Scott Donnelly looks like that of his boss, Head Coach Eric Luzzi, on a three year delay.

Like Luzzi three seasons ago, Donnelly comes to Northern Illinois with time as the head coach of an

NCAA program, and has arrived with the connections, experience, and drive to help keep the Huskies on the winning track.

“Hehasexperiencedealingwithplayers, coachingthemuponthefield, getting the most out of them,” Luzzi said. “I can already tell he has a fantastic eye for recruiting and getting the right kind of players and people in here that are going to continue to help us compete at a very high level.”

Most recently, Donnelly served as the head coach at Mars Hills College in North Carolina, where in 2007 and 2008 he led the Lions to their two best seasons since the turn of the century. In 2008, Mars Hill recorded the fourth-highest win total in school history, and Donnelly guided the Lions to regional rankings in both of his seasons at the helm.

Prior to his stint at Mars Hill, Donnelly was the assistant and interim head coachatSewanee:TheUniversityoftheSouth, wherehewasresponsiblefor team training, recruiting, scheduling, travel and academic oversight. Donnelly has also spent time as the High Country Soccer Association Director of Coaching, and as an assistant coach at Division III Washington College in Chestertown, Md.

Also similar to Luzzi, Donnelly has an insatiable appetite for learning the game. A United States Soccer Federation “B” License holder, Donnelly earned his premier diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in June of 2008, and has served on NCAA and NSCAA regional ranking committees, and as a Division II national championships site representative.

Donnelly graduated from the State University of New York, Geneseo with a double major in English literature and Spanish language in 2002, and earned his master’s degree in European history from Washington College in 2005.

garrett BILLER

HeadCoachEricLuzzilikesalotofthingsaboutfirst-year assistant Garrett Biller. Luzzi admires his work ethic, his knowledge, and his recruiting ability. Most importantly, Luzzi admires that Biller is a winner.

“He has experience at high-caliber programs both as a player and a coach,” Luzzi said.

Biller spent the last three seasons at Hastings College in Nebraska, where theBroncoscompileda44-14-5record,andfinishedinthenationalNAIAtop-25 in all three years. Biller helped coach Hastings to three conference and regional championships, and was deeply involved in recruiting, travel, and scouting.

Before coaching at Hastings, Biller was a graduate assistant coach at Wayne State, where he served as the women’s team’s top assistant and goalkeeping coach. With Biller’s help, the Wildcats turned a corner in program history, ranking 15th among the most improved soccer teams in the nation.

Biller started his winning ways as a player at Simpson College. In his four seasons, the Storm went 55-23-8, and played in four postseason tournaments. With eight career goals and 10 career assists as a centerback, Biller displayed a tenacity on the pitch that helped Simpson to its highest ever ranking in the NSCAA poll in 2000.

Biller also has experience with the Nebraska Olympic Developmental Program, where he acted as the 1995 boy’s head coach, and as a coach at multiple summer camps, including Northern Illinois, Oregon State, and Creighton.

After graduating from Simpson in 2003 with a degree in sports administration, Biller earned his master’s in sports management from Wayne State in 2006.

Volunteer Assistant Coach | First YearHamline University (2006)

al MORAWIECKI

Al Morawiecki joined the Northern Illinois men’s soccer staff in the summer of 2009, and has made an immediate impact on the program.

“Al brings an appetite to do whatever he can for our program,” Luzzi said. “He has a wonderful personality

around the guys, who have taken to him very well.”

Morawiecki spent the last two seasons at Concordia University St. Paul as the graduate assistant women’s soccer coach. At Concordia, he was responsible for organizing and implementing training sessions, assisting with recruiting, and coordinating the team’s academic affairs.

With extensive experience coaching at the club level, including as a state coach with the Minnesota Olympic Developmental Program, Morawiecki brings the work ethic and determination to help Northern Illinois reach the top of the Mid-American Conference.

Morawiecki graduated from Hamline University in 2006, where he played both soccer and hockey. He earned his master’s degree from Concordia in May of 2009.

“Ifyousacrificeforeachotherandtheteamnow, you’regoingtogetsomuchmoreinreturnalittlelater,”hesaid.“Truesacrificewillhaveahugepayoffinterms of the overall experience and the season that we’re going to have.”

In 2009, Luzzi and the Huskies are looking to continue the most successful run inprogramhistory.Over thepastfiveseasons,Northern Illinoishaswon56 matches, delivered a MAC Championship to DeKalb, and upended two top-10 teams. In order for that unprecedented level of success to continue, Luzzi believeseachmemberofhisteammustsacrificeforoneanother.

“There’s an expectation that our guys care about each other, and that they give of themselves for the team,” he said. “We are going to build a team in the truest sense of the word, to the point where everybody on our team is invested, on the same page.”

Thatteam-firstphilosophyhelpedtheHuskiestothe2006MACChampionship,and to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The players who were freshmen on that team are now seniors, and Luzzi believes their experience will be essential to the upcoming year.

“Our seniors have a very unique perspective because they do have an appetite to experience those same feelings again,” Luzzi said. “They know how hard we’ve had to work over the last couple of years and how close we’ve been. They know the margin for error is so small. I think those are lessons that they’re going to be able to pass on to our younger core of players.”

The Huskie soccer renaissance that taught many of those lessons began with a commitment to defending. The Huskies recorded 35 shutouts from 2005-08, a trend Luzzi is intent on continuing.

“Obviously defending has been a big part of our formula for success over last several years and the expectation is that is going to continue,” Luzzi said.

Two essential defenders are seniors Kyle Knotek (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and Josh Karsten (Barrington Hills, Ill./Barrington). The pair have combined to play in 105 games, and hold 92 career starts.

“Our back line is going to start with Josh,” Luzzi said. “He has been a staple as one of our centerbacks for pretty much his entire NIU career, and he is going to be the leader of our team from the back.”

While Karsten will be the keystone of the center, Knotek will act as the shutdown defender on the outside.

“When you have to play against players like (former Akron forward and current MLS starter) Steve Zakuani, you need outside backs that can shut things down,” Luzzi said. “When you’re talking about a guy that can shut things down, there may not be a better player in the whole country than Kyle Knotek.”

Knotek, an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American, is widely regarded for his unceasing motor on the field, a characteristic shared bysophomore defender Alex Evert (Marietta, Ga./Harrison).

SaidLuzzi:“AlexEvertisplayerthathadafantasticspringforusasanoutsideback.”

The Huskies also return the experience in the back of Francis Otira (London, England/Finchley Catholic) and Tim King (Arlington Heights, Ill./Conant), both of whom saw action in 2008 as freshmen.

ThefinalpieceoftheHuskiesdefensivepuzzleisDannyLopez.Renownedforhisversatility,Lopez(BuffaloGrove, Ill./Stevenson)couldfill thespaceinthedefensivemidfieldleftbythegraduationofDrewJeskey.

“Danny Lopez is a very difficult player for other teams to deal with in themidfield,”Luzzisaidof thesenior. “Hecloses thingsdownata rate thatnotmany other guys can.”

AheadofLopezinthemidfieldwillbeacombinationofFreshmanAll-AmericanBrad Horton (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), Luis De La Cerda (Guadalajara, Mexico/Waubonsie Valley) and Luis Mojica (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East). Horton led

the Huskies in goals (six) and points (15), and creates danger for the opposition whenever he touches the ball.

“I know that whenever Brad has the ball, there is the potential for something big to happen,” Luzzi said.

De La Cerda, with seven career goals, and Mojica, with four assists in his time at NIU, can also provide a spark to the Huskie offense, though Luzzi hasn’t decided exactly how he will utilize their talents.

“Luis and Luis are very good playmakers, and it’s our job as a coaching staff to put them in the right positions to make plays,” Luzzi said.

NIU’s skilled and experiencedmidfieldwill be feeding theball to a versatilegroup of forwards. In addition to bringing back 83 percent of the goals scored in 2008,theHuskiesreturnfourstrikerswithsignificantexperience.SeniorBenThomas(Hamilton,Ohio/Fairfield)ledallforwardswithfourgoalslastseason,and has found the net eight times in the 55 matches of his Huskie career.

“Certainly Ben Thomas is the most experienced striker we have,” Luzzi said. “He hassomeathletictoolsthatmakeitdifficultforopponentstostaywithhim, andthereisintelligenceinthewayhemovesthatmakeitdifficultforopponentstodeal with him.”

An athlete who has the physical tools to challenge the opposition is junior Juan Hoyos(Aurora,Ill./WaubonsieValley).Afterscoringtwogoalsinthefirstmatchof 2008, including a spectacular bicycle kick from the 18-yard line, Hoyos struggled with injury and appeared in just six matches. Luzzi expects a healthy Hoyos to contribute heavily to the NIU attack.

“Juan Hoyos is a physical presence up top that I can’t imagine many opposing backlines are going to be prepared for,” Luzzi said. “He has worked really hard in the last six or eight months to get himself to a level where he can have an impacteverysingletimehestepsonthefield.”

Another forward with unique physical tools is 6-foot-5 Norwegian Finn Jor (Oslo/Academy for Elite Athletes), who contributed two goals and an assist to the attack as a freshman one year ago.

“He is a Norwegian so he comes with a different soccer pedigree than a lot of our American kids,” Luzzi said. “He has a tactical awareness of how things should be done in that role. He is also a handful, at 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds of solid athlete.”

Thefinalpieceof theHuskies’puzzle isbetweenthepipes, whereLuzzihasto replace three-year starter Joe Zimka. Junior college transfers Chris Tidwell (Shabbona, Ill./Indian Creek/Kishwaukee C.C.) and Nate DuBois (Lemont, Ill./Lemont/Loras) are in the running, as is freshman Jordan Godsey (Ocean Springs, Miss./Ocean Springs).

Luzzi is confident the Huskies have all the pieces in place to compete foranother MAC Championship.

“I know that our guys can compete with anybody in the country on the soccer field,”hesaid.“Ithinkouremphasisisgoingtobecontinuingtobecomeatrueteam. Our expectation is we are going to be one of the tightest, hardest-working groups of players in the country. When you pair those things, it’s going to allow our family to achieve things that most people don’t think are possible.”

Nicknamed “Mr. Hat Trick,” Eric Roy be-came the initial ‘mega scorer’ in Northern Illinois University men’s soccer history. He established school records for goals in a match (four), a season (16) and a career (43) during his three-season varsity tenure. While those hallmarks have since been surpassed, he continues to share the record for most hat tricks (five) along with Ed Kositzki. Roy scored the school’s first-ever hat trick with three goals against Illinois on Nov. 4, 1967. The team MVP as a sophomore (1967) and junior (1968), he lettered on teams that produced a cu-mulative 21-3-0 record under Bill Healey (1967-68) and Dave Bucher (1969). In addition, he won three letters as a Huskie wrestler.eric ROy
