SAvOR THE HILL COuNTRy LuNCHEONSLocation: Texas Hill Country (various Wineries)
There’s no place like the Texas Hill Country in the Spring – and at each of the three host wineries, including Becker vineyards, Fall Creek vineyards and Stone House vineyard, wildflowers ran riot and created the perfect backdrop for the vines. Each winery’s unique and special setting created a stunning atmosphere, which guests enjoyed at this leisurely multi-course luncheon. Well-known Texas chefs created delicious dishes paired to Texas wines. Both host and guest winemakers talked about their wines and the challenges of being a winemaker in Texas.
Attendance: 150
TEXAS CuLINARy MASTERSLocation: The Four Seasons Hotel
Noted Chef Elmar Prambs (TRIO) hosted this gourmet multi-course dinner with each course ex-pertly paired with wines from the renowned Moet Hennessy portfolio. Chefs John Tesar (formerly of The Mansion on Turtle Creek, Dallas), Tyson Cole (uchi, Austin) and Paul Petersen (The Gage Hotel, Marathon) joined Chef Elmar and TRIO’s dessert alchemist Naomi Gallego in creating dishes that both delighted the palate and pushed the envelope. RESERvE TASTINGLocation: Sullivan’s Steakhouse
The Georges de la Tour Reserve wines made for Beaulieu vineyard by Russian émigré Andrew Tchelistcheff are legendary, and the six-square mile appellation is definitively the sweet spot for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. This tasting offered the chance to compare the reserve Cabernets from three of Rutherford’s prestigious wineries, including Beaulieu vineyard, Provenance vine-yards and Sterling vineyards.

WHERE TERROIR MEETS TRADITIONLocation: AT&T Conference Center and Hotel
Texas has a wealth of cultural and culinary influences: the indigenous Mexican population, the predominantly German pioneers of the mid 1800’s, the Creole and Cajun influences of Southeast Texas, the cowboy cooks and the more recent influx of Asian and African migrants. All have made their mark in this great state. This seminar gave guests the chance to connect the dots by pairing these distinct cuisines with the wines of Texas, with offerings from Becker vineyards, Fall Creek vineyards, Llano Estacado, Messina Hof vineyards, McPherson Cellars, Pheasant Ridge, Texas Hills vineyard and Alamosa Cellars.
Attendance: 38
RED, WHITE AND NEWLocation: The victorian Room, Driskill Hotel
This tasting of ‘anything but Cabernet’ from a select number of the Festival guest wineries of-fered the chance to visit one-on-one with the winemakers and taste their latest offerings. Guests sampled wines from Calina, Cambria vineyards, Carmel Road, Ferrari Carano, Grgich Hills, Long Boat, Louis Martini, Medusa/Spellbound, Treana, William Hill Estate and more.

QuE PASO?Location: Perry’s Steakhouse
Paso Robles has a reputation as the last outpost for maverick winemakers – maybe its historical ties to outlaw Jesse James set the tone back in the 1800s – but in reality it is the home to 170 bonded wineries, a large number of them highly regarded. Ross Outen, Austin’s own contestant in the upcoming PBS series “The Winemakers” moderated a lively panel of Paso winemakers, includ-ing Treana, L’Aventure, Clayhouse, Robert Hall Winery, Tablas Creek and J Lohr, as they talked guests through their wines in this seated tasting.
Attendance: 42
MINI SWIRLWINDLocation: Malaga Tapas and Bar
Diageo, the renowned wines and spirits house, brought its trademark ‘Mini Swirlwind’ tasting to Austin. Guests sipped, swirled and savored the wines of some of California’s top wineries, visited with the winemakers and enjoyed a plate of tapas at this walk-round tasting hosted by Chef Alejandro Duran at Malaga. Participating wineries included Beaulieu vineyard, Acacia, Archetype, Canoe Ridge, Chalone vineyards, Edna valley vineyards, Newhaven, Provenance, Rosenblum Cel-lars, Sagelands and Sterling vineyards.

SPONSORSHIPSponsorships were a major challenge for the 2009 Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival.Giant Noise inherited relationships with two presenting sponsors Central Market and Lexus that both elected not to participate in 2009.
With this net loss of $82,000 the Giant Noise and Wine and Food team was able to generate over $107,000 in cash and over $171,500 in trade from media partners, venues and other vendors. $279,000 in cash and in-kind sponsorships all total.
