Who has the advantage?

UTAH vs. NOTRE DAME

MICHAEL CONROY/Associated Press

Freshman Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees makes a pass against Tulsa during the second half of their game in South Bend, Ind.

Senior Day pressure will push Notre Dame

QUARTERBACKUTAH!Jordan Wynn will need a better performance than he had against TCU (two interceptions and a lost fumble) if the Utes hope to bounce back from the tough loss. On the year, Wynn’s 147.6 pass-e!ciency rating is second best in the Mountain West Conference, and he’s completed 65 percent of his passes (128-for-197), throwing 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He’s had four 200-yard passing games, with a career-best 325 yards coming against Iowa State.

NOTRE DAME!With starter Dayne Crist (torn patellar tendon) out for the remainder of the season, 18-year-old true freshman Tommy Rees will get his "rst career start this week. Rees replaced Crist in the "rst quarter against Tulsa and completed 33-of-54 for 334 yards for four touchdowns in a loss—Rees also threw three picks in the game. Rees has a pass-e!ciency rating of 125.3. Nate Montana, son of NFL Hall-of-Fame quarterback Joe Montana, has been promoted to backup.

EDGE: UTAH

RUNNING BACKSUTAH!TCU pummelled Utah’s usually potent running game, holding them to a combined 51 yards—their season-rushing average is 111 yards. Both Matt Asiata and Eddie Wide have surpassed 500 yards on the season and have combined for 18 touchdowns (15 rushing and three receiving). Wide is sixth in the MWC in rushing average (58.1), and Asiata is seventh (57.2). Asiata’s 23 receptions is third best on the team, and Wide’s 22 catches come in fourth-best.

NOTRE DAME!The Fighting Irish also lost their starting running back Armando Allen (torn hip carti-lage) for the season. Through eight games, Allen rushed for 514 yards and two touchdowns. Replacing Allen at the position is Cierre Wood (274 yards and two touchdowns) and Robert Hughes (17 rushes for 90 yards). As a team, Notre Dame averages 113.4 yards on the rush.

EDGE: UTAH

RECEIVERSUTAH!DeVonte Christopher returned from injury last week to lead the team with six catches for 73 yards. On the year, Christopher has 572 yards and "ve touchdowns on 32 receptions. Senior Jereme Brooks leads the team with 40 receptions and has scored four touchdowns. Shaky Smithson (14 catches for 243 yards and three touchdowns) and Luke Matthews (13 catches for 207 yards and two touchdowns) have been Wynn’s other main targets at receiver thus far.

NOTRE DAME!Michael Floyd enters the game as the leading receiver on either team with 55 catches for 728 yards and eight touchdowns. Theo Riddick (38 catches for 406 yards and three touchdowns) is the Irish’s second-leading receiver but has not participated in their previous two games against Navy and Tulsa. Stepping up in his stead has been TJ Jones (22 catches for 287 yards and three scores) and John Goodman (14 catches for 116 yards).

EDGE: NOTRE DAME

OFFENSIVE LINEUTAH!The Utes’ veteran line was nearly impenetrable up until last week, when it allowed the TCU line to disrupt Wynn throughout the game and gave up a sack that led to a turnover. On the year, the Utes allowed just four sacks for a loss of 27 yards.

NOTRE DAME!The Fighting Irish have given up 17 sacks on the year for a total loss of 100 yards. However, they performed well in their last game against Tulsa, allowing just one.

EDGE: UTAH

DEFENSIVE LINEUTAH!Because of the depth at defensive line, senior Christian Cox (45 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks) and junior Sealver Siliga (25 tackles, a half sack and a recovered fumble) are the only two linemen that have started every game. Senior end Derrick Shelby has started the past three games and is sixth in the MWC in with two forced fumbles. Nose tackle Dave Kruger has chipped in 20 tackles, two TFL and a half sack. Trevor Reilly, Neli A’asa, Junior Tui’one, Latu Heimuli and Star Lotulelei also have recorded sacks.

NOTRE DAME!Kapron Lewis-Moore is the leading tackler among linemen with 36 stops and has 2.5 TFL and 2.0 sacks. Ethan Johnson (25 stops) leads the line in TFL with 6 and is second on the team in sacks (5.0), and nose tackle Sean Cwynar has 23 tackles (seven solo) and a forced fumble.

EDGE: UTAH

LINEBACKERSUTAH!Chad Manis (40 tackles, two TFL) practiced all this week and is expected to return after sitting out last week. Chaz Walker leads the team, is "fth in the MWC with 79 tackles and had a career-best 18 stops against TCU, which was the most by a Ute since Antwoine Sanders’ 18-tackle game in 2001 against BYU. Matt Martinez is second on the team, with 53 stops to go along with four TFL, 1.5 sacks and an interception.

NOTRE DAME!Manti Te’o leads Notre Dame in 100 tackles (51 solo) and is tied for second in TFL (7.0). Carlo Calabrese is second among linebackers with 59 stops and has 2.5 sacks. Darius Fleming (34 stops) is the leading sack-master with 5.5. Outside backer Kerry Neal has chipped in 32 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

EDGE: NOTRE DAME

DEFENSIVE BACKSUTAH!Nickel back Lamar Chapman was contained last week but ranks fourth in the MWC in sacks (5.5), TFL (9.5) and TFL average (1.06 yards). Senior corner Brandon Burton has one interception and four pass breakups this year and 14 on his career—his 10 breakups last season was second best in the MWC. Safeties Brian Blechen and Justin Taplin-Ross have combined for 79 tackles, four interceptions and "ve pass breakups.

NOTRE DAME!Safety Harrison Smith is second in stops behind Te’o with 66 (37 solo) to go along with his two interceptions and is tied for the team lead in pass breakups (5)—he collected six stops and a pass breakup against Tulsa on Oct. 30. Corner Gary Gray led the team tackling against Tulsa with eight and has 45 total on the year, along with a pick and "ve breakups. The starting secondary as a whole has six intercep-tions.

EDGE: UTAH

SPECIAL TEAMSUTAH!Placekicker Joe Phillips is second in the MWC in points per game (8.3) and is 9-of-10 in "eld-goal attempts this year. Punter Sean Sellwood had a career-long punt of 67 yards last week against TCU, and three of his eight punts that game went for more than 50 yards. Return specialist Smithson leads the nation in both punt return average (22.8) and return yards (570). However, he’s only mustered 15 yards o# punt returns in his previous three games combined as teams have focused in on him.

NOTRE DAME!Placekicker David Ru#er is perfect on all 13 of his "eld goal attempts this season with a long of 50 yards. Punter Ben Turk is averaging 38.9 yards on 48 attempts. Turk has placed 18 of those inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, with a long punt of 56 yards. Return specialist Bennett Jackson has collected 464 yards on 21 kick returns (22.1-yard average).
