Replete with extensive international, collegiate and amateur experience as an athlete and coach, Petra Martin begins her rst season at the helm of the Bowling Green State University women’s swimming program in 2010.

Martin comes to the Falcons with eight years of experience with the Czech National Swim Team, three years of experience as a member of the University of Maryland swim team, four years of experience as an assistant coach in the collegiate ranks, and several years of experience through stints as coach of various amateur swim teams.

Most recently, she spent three seasons as an assistant coach at George Mason University.

While at George Mason, the 32-year old coached several World Championship trials quali ers and worked directly with swimmers who nished as high as second at the NCAA National Championships. Her sprinters broke numerous school and Colonial Athletic Association records, and they achieved NCAA Division I “A” and “B” qualifying standards.

During the 2009-10 season, Martin coached Ashley Danner to a second place nish at the Women’s NCAA Division I Championships in the 100 breaststroke and sixth place in the 200 breaststroke. Danner earned All-American honors in 2010 and honorable mention All-American status in 2009. She was also named the Female Break-Out Swimmer of the Year by the Collegiate Swimming Association.

In addition, Martin coached Eric Knight to Division I top 25 performances in the 50 and 200 freestyle. He broke the CAA record in the 200 freestyle in 2010 and received the Male Career Improvement Award by the Collegiate Swimming Association.

Martin further assisted in the coaching of Kate Zeigler, an Olympian and world record holder.

Prior to her work at George Mason, Martin served as the assistant swimming coach at the University of Maryland from 2003-2004, after graduating from the university in 2003.

During her time at Maryland, Martin assisted in virtually every aspect of the team. She held recruiting duties, assisted international student-athletes, supervised workouts and training, and performed fundraising and promotional work for the Terrapins.

Martin also has experience with several different amateur teams.

She worked as the associate head coach for the Fort Belvoir Swim Team in Alexandria, Va. and coached 80 adult triathletes as the head coach of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training.

Martin served as both general manager and head coach of the Potomac Raiders Swim Club from 2003-2005 and was also the head coach of the Maryland Masters Swim Team.

Martin’s international and collegiate swimming experience served as a starting point to her coaching career. She swam for the University of Maryland from 2000-2002 and earned honorable mention All-American status in 2001 for the 200- and 400-meter freestyle relays. She also earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference status in 2001 by helping her 200-meter freestyle relay team set a school record time of 1:31.34.

Martin earned Academic All-American honors in each of her seasons as a collegiate swimmer.

She competed internationally for the Czech National Swim Team from 1996-2004 and represented the team at various events, including the European Championships. Martin was ranked in the top 25 worldwide in the 50 butter y and the 50 freestyle during the year 2000. In that same year, she broke a Czech national record.

After earning three separate degrees at Maryland, Martin secured a bachelors degree in physical education from Emory University’s Oxford College in 2004.

She is married to Andrew Martin, a former All-American swimmer at Kenyon College, and the couple has a two-year old daughter, Caden.

Meg Richardson begins her rst season as graduate assistant swimming coach for the Falcons in 2010.

As assistant to head coach Petra Martin, Richardson is respon-sible for assisting on the pool deck with coaching, as well as team travel arrangements and day-to-day operations.

Richardson was a four-year letter winner for the BGSU swim-ming team from 2006 to 2010. During her time with the Fal-cons, she set numerous school records in individual and relay events and served as a team captain in her junior and senior seasons.

In 2006-07, Richardson helped the Falcons to two top- ve n-ishes in relay events at the MAC Championships, placing third in the 200 medley relay and fth in the 200 free relay. Individu-ally, she placed 12th in the 50 free.

During her sophomore season, she helped set two BGSU re-cords for relay events at the MAC Championships, as the team nished fth in the 200 IM relay and sixth in the 200 free relay. She also earned a 20th place nish in the 100 breaststroke at the OSU Invitational.

Richardson set a BGSU record in the 50 free and the 100 free and swam a new personal best time in the 100 breaststroke, the second fastest time in BGSU history.

Richardson again served as team captain during her senior campaign. At the 2010 MAC Championships, Richard-son broke three individual school records and aided in one record-breaking relay race. She set school records in the 50 free (23.09), taking ninth; the 100 free (53.06), taking sixth; the 200 free (1:49.82), taking seventh; and the 800 free Relay (7:23.27), taking seventh. Jon SteinbrecherCommissionerMid-American ConferenceProviding leadership in education and diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 64th year of service to the student-athlete.

Since its inception in 1946, the MAC has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive

Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commis-sioner in the 64-year history of the league in March of 2009. Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference.

The league has grown its commitment to championships by expanding to six its number of neutral site post season events – football (Detroit’s Ford Field),volleyball (Toledo’s SeaGate Centre), men’s and women’s basketball (Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena), softball (Akron’s Firestone Stadium) and baseball (Chilli-cothe’s VA Memorial Stadium).

The MAC tied a league record in 2009 with ve schools participating in football bowl games – Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Temple. This marked the second consecutive season for the MAC to send ve schools to bowl appearances and only the third time in conference history (2004, 2008, 2009). The 2009 season also witnessed Central Michigan ranked No. 23 in the AP poll and No. 24 in the USA Today coaches poll at the end of the season following a dramatic 44-41 2OT win over Troy in the GMAC Bowl. Two more MAC teams defeated Big Ten opponents during the regular season as Central Michigan defeated Michigan State, 29-27 at East Lansing, Mich., while Northern Illinois rolled to a 28-21 win at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.

For the rst time in its 64-year history, the MAC will have ve bowl relationships -- three primary and two secondary -- for the next four seasons (2010-2013). The three primary agreements are with the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl (Detroit, Mich.), GMAC Bowl (Mobile, Ala.) and uDrove Humanitarian Bowl (Boise, Idaho).

Several other milestones occurred in football last season. Central Michigan QB Dan LeFevour nished his career with three MAC Championships and four consecutive bowl appearances and completed his career with 150 total touchdowns -- most in FBS history -- and is the MAC career leader in total offensive yards, passing yards, completions, attempts and passing touchdowns. Bowling Green WR Freddie Barnes led the country in receptions and was one of three nalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top wide receiver. Western Michigan QB Tim Hiller won the 2009 Wuerffel Trophy, better known as the Humanitarian Heisman, given annually to one football student-athlete that showed excellence athletically, academically and in giving back to the community. This past April, ve MAC players were selected in the NFL Draft and over 20 more were signed to free agent con-tracts. Finally the National Football Foundation recognized 13 MAC student-athletes to the 2010 Hampshire Honor Society with success both athletically and academically with a 3.20 GPA or better.

In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC will enter the second year of its eight-year rights agreement (through 2016-2017 academic year) for football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The deal is the most extensive in the 64-year history of the conference. The agreement calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men’s and women’s basket-ball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Football Championship and a minimum of 11 regular-season football games.

Akron continued its dominance in men’s soccer and was ranked No. 1 in the country through the entire year. The Zips won their 12th regular season championship and fell to Virginia in the NCAA College Cup Championship Game. Akron coach Caleb Porter was named National Coach of the Year for NCAA Division I. UA striker Teal Bunbury received three honors, including the 2009 Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious honor in ntercollegiate soccer. Two Akron soccer players were selected in the top 10 of the MLS 2010 SuperDraft, including Bunbury (No. 4 overall to the

Kansas City Wizards) and Blair Gavin (No. 10 overall to Chivas USA).

Ohio’s men’s basketball team entered the MAC tournament as a No. 9 seed anddefeated Akron in the MAC Championship game. The Bobcats went on anddefeated No. 3 seed Georgetown in the opening round of the NCAA tournamentbefore falling to Tennessee. In wrestling Central Michigan won its ninth consecutiveMAC championship, while the MAC sent 26 wrestlers to the NCAA DivisionI Wrestling Championship where six grapplers secured All-America honors.Eastern Michigan won its fourth consecutive championship in men’s swimmingand diving, while Kent State won its 18th MAC title in men’s golf and receivedits 23rd NCAA appearance. Western Michigan made its fth consecutiveappearance to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament.

Women’s athletics continued to shine for the MAC this past year. For the rst timein MAC history ve basketball teams were invited to postseason tournaments.Bowling Green won the MAC tourney and received the invitation to the NCAAtournament, while Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Toledo all were invited tothe WNIT and Akron received an invite to the Women’s Basketball Invitational.

In women’s soccer, Central Michigan won the MAC championship and defeatedPurdue in its rst NCAA tournament match in program history. Ohiowon the MAC volleyball championship and defeated Notre Dame in the rstround of the NCAA tournament. In women’s swimming and diving, Toledowon its rst ever MAC championship, while Buffalo’s Meili Carpenter becamethe rst swimmer in school history to earn All-America status. Both CentralMichigan and Kent State competed at the NCAA Regional Championships ingymnastics, while KSU won its 12th consecutive women’s golf conferencetitle and advanced to the NCAA championships.

From two-time Super Bowl quarterback winning Ben Roethlisberger (Miami),NFL Defensive MVP James Harrison (Kent State), three NFL Pro Bowlers(Cleveland KR Josh Cribbs, San Diego TE Antonio Gates, Pittsburgh LB JamesHarrison), British Open winner Ben Curtis (Kent State), World Series winningmanager Bob Brenly (Ohio) and Olympic bobsled team member BrockKreitzburg (Toledo), the Mid-American Conference continues to excel in producingleaders in the world of athletics.

Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo,Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’sand women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was foundedas a ve-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler,Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members.

The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, forfootball only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998),Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University(1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are BallState University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern MichiganUniversity (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), Universityof Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947).

In 1946 men’s basketball was the rst competitive sport in the MAC, whichnow sponsors a total 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’sstructure in 1980.

For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and eld, outdoor trackand eld, wrestling, golf and tennis.

Dr. Carol A. Cartwright, who is one of the most highly respected voices in higher education, is the rst woman to take a presidential role at Bowling Green State Uni-versity. She was named the presi-dent of BGSU Jan. 6, 2009, after serving as interim president since July 2008.

Dr. Cartwright’s experience in Ohio was key to the BGSU Board of Trustee’s decision to name her president. She also has a keen understanding of the opportunities available through the University System of Ohio and is supportive of the vision of Gov. Strickland and Chancellor Fingerhut.

Dr. Cartwright’s career has been distinguished by innovative teach-ing, pioneering research and national leadership. She became Kent State University’s 10th president–and the rst woman president of a state university in Ohio–in March 1991. She retired as president in June 2006 and was named president emeritus. Prior to her career at Kent State, she was vice chancellor for academic affairs at the Uni-versity of California at Davis and dean for undergraduate programs and vice provost at The Pennsylvania State University.

Under Dr. Cartwright’s leadership, student success became Kent State’s top priority; many mutually bene cial partnerships were forged with businesses, schools and other universities; the status of teaching and public service was elevated; academic programs were launched in a wide range of high-demand and emerging elds; the university pioneered technologies that enhance teaching and learning; enrollment increased in quantity and quality; building and celebrat-ing diversity became an institutional priority; new collaborations and exchanges connected Kent State to every corner of the world; the university constructed 21st-century facilities from residence halls to research labs; and Kent State successfully completed its rst, major fund-raising campaign.

Dr. Cartwright held prominent leadership roles on higher education’s most in uential national organizations, chairing the board of direc-tors of the American Association for Higher Education and serving on the boards of directors of the American Council on Education and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. She chaired the National Collegiate Athletic Association Executive Committee and served as a member of the NCAA’s board of directors. She also served on the executive board of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education; the Center for Re-search Libraries board of directors; and the American Council on Education Commission on Women in Higher Education. She cur-rently serves on the board of directors of the American Association of Colleges and Universities; the Knight Commission on Intercolle-giate Athletics; and the National Public Radio board of directors.

Dr. Cartwright was a leading member of numerous regional and statewide civic and economic-development organizations, including

the Greater Akron Chamber, the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education and NorTech. She co-chaired the Ohio Technology in Education Committee, which developed Ohio’s master plan for edu-cational technology from preschool through graduate school. Her participation in initiatives to improve Ohio’s economy includes past service on the Governor’s Commission on Higher Education and the Economy. Dr. Cartwright also serves on the boards of directors of three companies with headquarters in Northeast Ohio: KeyCorp and PolyOne Corporation of Cleveland and FirstEnergy Corp. of Akron.

The scope of her contributions to higher education led to Dr. Cartwright’s induction into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame in her rst year of eligibility. She received Distinguished Alumni awards from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and the University of Pittsburgh; the Clairol Mentor Award in Education; the YWCA Greater Cleveland Women of Achievement Award; the Northeast Ohio ATHENA Award; and the March of Dimes Franklin Delano Roosevelt Humanitarian Award for Excellence. After announcing her retirement as president, she was honored throughout the region, state and nation, including recognition in the form of resolutions of appreciation from the Ohio Legislature and the U.S. Congress. She was awarded the title “President Emeritus” from the Kent State University Board of Trustees. In addition, the Auditorium Building on the university’s Kent Campus was named “Carol A. Cartwright Hall” in her honor.

Dr. Cartwright earned master’s and doctoral degrees from the Uni-versity of Pittsburgh and her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.

She and Dr. G. Phillip Cartwright have three children, the youngest of whom is a Kent State graduate, and two grandchildren.

Greg Christopher is in his fth year as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Bowling Green State University. Christopher, the 12th full-time athletic directer in school history, began his duties in July of 2006 has accomplished a great deal in his rst four years in Northwest Ohio.

Christopher oversees an 18-sport program which has a budget of $17 million and 75 full-time employees. BGSU, which is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and

Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), is one of 13 programs in the country which sponsor Division I-A football and compete in men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey on the Division I level.

A native of West Lafayette, Ind., Christopher has moved the BGSU athletic department forward in multiple areas in his rst four years. The Sebo Athletic Center was completed in the fall of 2007, featuring expanded and state-of-the-art sports medicine and rehabilitation facilities as well as a strength and conditioning area for all University student-athletes. The new front entrance for Doyt L. Perry Stadium, the building also houses administrative of ces as well as of ces and meeting rooms for the football Falcons.

The Sebo Athletic Center is part of $14 million in new or renovated athletics facilities completed during Christopher’s tenure. That facilities list includes the new Keefe Tennis Complex, a renovation to Whittaker Track, improvements at baseball’s Steller Field and the FieldTurf inside Perry Stadium.

Additionally, another $40 million is underway, including an $4 million renovation to the BGSU Ice Arena and a $36 million convocation center. The Stroh Center, a brand-new arena for the Falcon basketball and volleyball programs, is scheduled to be completed in 2011. Incremental facility improvement plans are also underway for other BGSU athletics venues.

Athletic achievements of Christopher’s four years include eight conference banners, the most in a four-year span at BGSU since the early 1990’s. Highlights include the remarkable run of women’s basketball. The women’s hoops Falcons became the rst team in conference history to advance to the ‘Sweet 16’ of the NCAA in 2006-07, winning a MAC record 31 games along the way. Curt Miller’s team made its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, following the Falcons sixth straight conference title.

In Christopher’s tenure, football has played in two post-season bowl games, including the 2008 GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and the 2009 Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho. The 2007 football team also shared the MAC East Division title. In 2008-09, the men’s basketball team won its rst regular season MAC title in decade, advancing the NIT post-season tournament. And baseball has won three consecutive MAC East Division titles, including overall conference regular season championships in 2008 and 2009.

In the classroom, the Falcons have ourished, as the number of student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or above has increased in each of the last three years. In 2009-10, BGSU student-athletes set a new bar for cumulative GPA record, charting a 3.07 mark, and 196 BG student-athletes had a GPA of at least 3.0. The student-athlete graduation rate is greater than the overall student body’s graduation rate.

Christopher implemented the Falcon Leadership Academy, a leadership development program for BGSU student-athletes. Christopher, along with several other administrators in the athletics department, serves as an instructor for the class, which represents each of the department’s 18 varsity sports.

Christopher’s background in fundraising and development has been evident in his rst four years at BGSU. There have been double-digit percentage increases in the external funding areas, including development, corporate marketing, licensing and concessions. Christopher has furthered the department’s logo transition and

integrated an external communications plan.

Christopher came to BGSU after spending nearly a decade at Purdue University in his hometown. He served as Associate A.D. for External Relations and John Purdue Club Director at Purdue University. Christopher, who had been at the school since 1997, was a member of the department’s senior staff. He was accountable for external and revenue-related areas for Purdue’s $50 million department. In his role, he oversaw several areas, including development, marketing, promotions and advertising, athletic licensing and sports information.

Under his leadership, Purdue raised $17.2 million in total giving for Athletics in his nal year there. He also played a signi cant role in a seven-year campus-wide capital campaign which raised $111 million for Athletics during that period. Projects that came to fruition in that time frame include tripling the number of endowed athletic scholarships and several facility additions or renovations. Among the facility projects were an indoor golf training center, football stadium renovation, aquatic center, indoor tennis center, and basketball video board campaign. He also was the advisor for Purdue’s chapter of Athletes-in-Action, and served a period of time as the sport administrator for Purdue’s men’s and women’s tennis programs.

Christopher served as Executive Director for the Society of Professional Journalists in Greencastle, Ind., from 1994 to 1997 after joining the organization in 1991 as its Marketing and Development Director. During that time, he managed a staff of 15 for the nation’s largest not-for-pro t journalism organization. His tenure focused largely on external relations, fueling growth that doubled the net worth of the foundation and association. He also improved relations with SPJ’s 250 local chapters and negotiated contracts and corporate partnerships.

Prior to joining SPJ, Christopher was an Account Executive at WWWV-FM in Charlottesville, Va., from 1988-90. In that capacity, he designed and managed station promotions, including partnerships with the athletics program at the University of Virginia. He also was part of the “Page Program” at NBC in New York in 1988 where he served as a research analyst, assisting the Manager of Sports Programming and Market Analysis in research of television sports.
