HEAD COACH | Mark Youngs (9th Year)

MARK YOUNGS

Coach Youngs begins his ninth season at the helm of the Panther wom-en's basketball program . Under his guidance, the Panthers have a record of 201 wins and 61 losses, including a 144-25 record over the past four seasons . During Youngs' tenure, Davenport has achieved as much off the court as they have on the court . They were the 2006 WBCA National Grade Point Average Champions posting a team GPA of 3 .613 . They fol-lowed that up with a fifth place finish in 2007 with a team GPA of 3 .551 and sixth place in 2008 .

Coach Youngs was named the 2006 WHAC Coach of the Year after lead-ing the Panthers to their first ever regular-season conference title and fol-lowed with the same honor in 2009-10 as well as garnering the BCAM Women's Coach of the Year . In 2008-09, Youngs also earned the Russell Athletic Midwest Region Coach of the Year honors .

Coach Youngs on Davenport: "Davenport University has allowed me to have full control over how I feel a college basketball program should be run . They have always provided my teams with what they have needed to be successful . The support that the school has given our athletic programs is un-matched at our level of competition ."

Coach Youngs on his players: "First of all, great people and great players make great coaches . I think that the people that we have in our program are some of the nation's elite student athletes . They are goal-oriented, hard-working young women who have a passion for the game of basket-ball as well as the game of life . You cannot help but to be successful when surrounded with these types of athletes ."

Coach Youngs on his philosophy: "I feel to be successful, you have to out-recruit your competition . Once that is accomplished, you have to make sure you adapt what you run to your personnel . We are a difficult team to guard because we always have five girls on the floor that can score from both the perimeter and around the basket . We attempt a lot of three point shots and we create a lot of mismatches . We like to attack both offensively and defensively for forty minutes ."

Mark lives in Caledonia with his wife Amber and son’s Trey and Eli .

2010-2011 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | 7

2010-2011 SEASON PREVIEWDespite compiling a five-year cumulative record of 144-25, the Panthers program has potentially the strongest and deepest team in their short history as a program . The Panthers return every statistical leader from last year’s sweet 16 team, which was ranked #1 in the polls for a period of 7 weeks in 2009-10 . The team, led by 9th year head coach Mark Youngs, looks poised to make a serious run for their fifth straight WHAC Championship and earn their seventh straight bid to the National tournament .

DU will be led once again by the 2009-10 Michi-gan College Coach of the Year Mark Youngs and his two assistants Kelly Wandel and Shannon Rose . The

trio has established DU as a National powerhouse in women’s basketball . Additions to the staff this year will be two former DU hoopsters in Lady Panther Megan Peters and men’s player Kyle Brechting .

There are four seniors on the roster this year for the Panthers . Kallie Benike (Campbellsport, Wis .), the 2008-09 WHAC player of the year and two-time All-American, will be the leader of the team’s offensive arsenal . Benike averaged a team-best 12 .8 points and 6 .5 rebounds per game last year in just 22 min-utes per game . Kristi Boehm (Kent City, Mich .) is the team’s quarterback at the point guard position . She is the heart and soul of one of the best full-court presses in the country . Boehm was a third team All-American and a first team All-WHAC performer and is also con-sidered one of the best defensive players in the coun-try . Boehm averaged 9 .7 points per game, and led the team with 134 assists and a school record 140 steals a year ago . Jeannie Closson (Parchment, Mich .) returns for her senior year after finishing fourth in the nation in blocked shots (76) despite averaging just 21 minutes per game . Barb Clayborn is the fourth senior on the roster for DU . Clayborn had 36 points and 38 rebounds a year ago in limited playing time for DU . She will pro-vide much needed depth and experience this season for DU .

The junior class contains five players from last year’s team and adds an NCAA D-1 transfer as well . Carrie Grubius (Gull Lake, Mich .) was a second team All-WHAC selection a year ago . She led the team in three pointers with 65 and was third on the team in

scoring at just under 10 points per game . Karlee De-spres (Comstock Park, Mich .) averaged 5 .0 points per game in just 12 minutes of action . She was also third on the team in three pointers with 31 on the season . Abby Neff (Lagrange, Ind .) averaged 7 .4 points per game and Julie Janish’s (Whittemore, Mich .) 5 .2 per game will also be counted on to bolster what Coach Youngs calls “the best 2nd five in the country” . Raina Chambers (Pontiac, Mich .) will bring her electric quickness back and now that she has added a much improved three point shot to her arsenal, she will be a match up nightmare for opposing point guards . The transfer in this class is 6’3 Riana Hensley (Toledo, Ohio) . Riana played two years previously at the University of Akron, where she led the MAC in blocked shots and was fourth in free throw percentage as a sophomore .

The sophomore class returns 6’0 post player Leah Sevcik (Kewaunee, Wis .), redshirt guard Kayla Gross (New Lothrop, Mich .) and newcomer Karli Harris (Fish-ers, Ind .) who transferred from NCAA D-1 Oakland Uni-versity . Sevcik was the second leading scorer amongst players who didn’t start a year ago for DU averaging 5 .7 points per game . Gross might be the team’s most dan-gerous three point threat off the bench this season . Harris is an extremely active and tough point guard, who played in every game last year for the Summit League Grizzlies . She will excel in the Panthers playing style and along with Hensley, should be a front-runner for WHAC Newcomer of the Year honors .

The roster contains only one player from the fresh-man class . 5’8 Monica Confer (New Lothrop, Mich .), will add much needed depth at the small forward position . Monica led her high school team to a 97-13 record and two state championships while compiling over 1000 points and 785 rebounds in her four years . As a senior, she averaged 13 .8 points and 11 .2 rebounds per game .

The 2010-11 schedule is torturous . 22 of the 30 games the Panthers will play this season will be against teams that won 16 games or more a year ago . The season starts out with a bang as the team heads to Nebraska to face Hastings College and Briar Cliff Uni-versity in their first two games . Hastings was ranked #1 in the nation last year in every poll that the Panthers weren’t ranked #1 . Briar Cliff ended the season ranked #8 in the nation and made a run all the way to the Final Four at the National Tournament . The third game of the year doesn’t get any easier as the Panthers will be at home to take on Olivet Nazarene . ONU has av-eraged over 102 points per game in two of the past three seasons and have led the nation in scoring in five of the last six years . Non-conference road dates to Georgetown, KY, Buffalo, NY, and a couple of games in Montana are also dates to circle on the calendar . The Panthers have just six non-conference home dates this winter and will welcome 2010 NAIA National Cham-pion Northwestern College (IA) on December 30th .

2009-2010 SEASON IN REVIEW

Top 5 Showdowns – The women’s team opened their season on the road in Sioux City, IA against #4 Hastings and #1 Morningside . Davenport managed to split with the nationally ranked powerhouses as they fell just two points short (64-62) against Hastings but rebounded with a convincing 78-64 win over top-ranked Morningside . The win on night two was the first in school history over the top ranked team in NAIA D2 .

Winning Streak Reaches 21 Games – The win over Morningside started a 21 game winning streak, which is the longest in school history . During the run Daven-port went over the century mark six times and posted wins over #4 Indiana Wesleyan (57-50), #14 Bethel College (90-76) and #16 Aquinas (94-40) .

Blackout Blowout – The showdown of #1 Davenport and #16 Aquinas within the Wolverine Hoosier Ath-letic Conference turned into anything but as the Lady Panthers built a 63 point lead midway through the second half and cruised to the 94-40 win over their ri-val . 10 different DU players posted as least four points in the game led by Kallie Benike’s 17 .

#1 Ranking – On the heels of a sweep in the WHAC/MCC Challenge, Davenport moved to #1 in the NAIA D2 women’s Top 25 poll . The top ranking was the first ever for a women’s team in the WHAC and they be-came only the third team (men’s or women’s) in con-ference history to achieve that mark . DU’s run at #1 would last just over a month until they fell to break their 21 game winning streak .

4th Straight WHAC Crown – Davenport sewed up their fourth straight regular season crown with a 71-61 win over GR-rival Aquinas . The win came with three games still to play in the conference regular sea-son . DU then went on to win their second ever WHAC Tournament crown by defeating UM-Dearborn in the quarterfinals, Cornerstone in the semifinals and Ma-

donna in the championship game . The win gave DU an automatic berth to nationals in Sioux City, IA .

Short Stay at Nationals – Looking to make their mark on the NAIA D2 ranks, the women’s team fell victim on “Upset Day” at the D2 National Tournament in Sioux City . Four of the top five seeds fell on day two of the 32-team tournament as DU was upset by Cardinal Stritch in the round of 16 .

All-American Honors – Davenport’s Kallie Benike and Kristi Boehm were both honored as NAIA All-Ameri-cans as Benike made the 2nd team and Boehm the 3rd team . It marked the first time in school history that two Lady Panthers earned the honor in the same year . During the year, Boehm broke the single season and career assists mark as well .
