2011-12 Season outlook The 2010-11 season was one of the most successful ever in Wright State women’s basketball history. Picked to finish eighth in the preseason Horizon League poll, the Raiders instead won 20 games for the first time as a Division I member, going 20-13 overall and 11-7 in the league, good for fourth place. After advancing to the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament, WSU competed in a Division I postseason tournament for the first time by host-ing a pair of games in the Women’s Basketball Invitational, defeating Buffalo before falling to Manhattan in the quarterfinals. Along the way, Wright State set school records for three-pointers in a game with 13 against Valparaiso on January 8 and in a season with 227, smashing the previous mark of 161 set during the 2007-08 campaign. So what do the Raiders do for an encore in 2011-12? If it’s up to second-year head coach Mike Bradbury, it will be more of the same as along with five return-ees from last season’s squad, WSU will have nine newcomers, a group that is considered amongst the best in the Horizon League.

Seniors

Wright State returns two seniors in forwards Molly Fox and Shaunda Sandifer, both who played major roles in last season’s success. Fox, a Second Team All-Horizon League selection in 2010-11 and a Preseason First Team All-League honoree in 2011-12, led the league in offensive rebounds per game as a junior at 3.7. She was also ranked second in field goal percentage at .546, fifth in overall rebounds at 9.2

per game, seventh in defensive re-bounds per game at 5.5, seventh in scoring at 14.8 points per game and ninth in blocks per game at 0.8. Fox scored in double figures 23 times last season with 14 of those coming in league play, including a career-best 28 against Detroit on January 15. She also had 11 double-figure rebound efforts, her high being 16 at Longwood on December 11, and posted 10 double-doubles. Sandifer was a pleasant surprise for the Raiders last season after com-pleting a stellar career for the vol-leyball team as she earned Horizon League All-Newcomer Team honors. In 31 games, 29 of those starts, she averaged 6.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game with 18 blocked shots while shooting 47 percent from the field. Sandifer scored 13 points in her debut at Delaware State and was in double figures six other times, three of those coming in the final four games of the season. She also reached double figures in rebounds 13 times, including 16 against Loyola and 15 versus Central Florida and Milwaukee, and dished out five or more assists in a game three times.

Sophomores

With no juniors on the roster, three sophomore guards in Courtney Boyd, KC Elkins and Kayla Lamotte round out the list of WSU returnees. Boyd was second on the squad in threes made last season with 70 as she averaged eight points per contest. She reached double figures in scoring seven times, including 19 at both Ball State and Cincinnati where she made five threes on each occasion. Boyd also collected five or more rebounds in a game 11 times.

Elkins played in 26 games off the bench in 2010-11, scoring a season-high 11 against Green Bay on March 3 as she went five-for-six at the foul line. Elkins connected on 10 three-pointers a season ago and also had 16 assists, including four in the regular-season finale with Milwaukee. Lamotte appeared in all but one game with eight starts last season. She hit all four shots in scoring 10 off the bench against UIC on January 27 and hit eight of 10 foul shots as she had a season-high 13 at Detroit on February 12, all but one of those coming in the second half.

Newcomers

The Raiders have eight newcom-ers on this year’s team, including six true freshmen, a freshman returning from injury and a sophomore

2011-12 Season outlooktransfer. Guard/forward Mylan Woods is that sophomore transfer as she joins the program from Northwestern, where she played in eight games in the early part of last season. Woods was the Ohio Division II Player of the Year as a junior and senior at Hathaway Brown High School, lead-ing the Blazers to state titles in both of those seasons. She averaged 15.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in 2009-10. Forward Katrina Blackmon averaged 20.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game as a senior for Marion (IN) High School while shooting 46 percent from the field. She was a First Team All-North Cen-tral Conference honoree as a junior and senior after being named to the Second Team as a freshman and sophomore. Guard Kim Demmings averaged 19.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game her senior year as she led the Richmond (IN) Red Devils to their best record since 2005. She was selected to the Hoosier Basketball North/South All-Star game, was named Second Team All-State and was chosen as the Area Player of the Year by the Richmond Palladium-Item last season. Forward Kirsten Gliesmann, who sat out last season with an injury, averaged 9.2 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 1.7 blocks per game as a senior at Center Grove High School in Green-wood, Indiana. Selected as one of the Top 60 Seniors by Hoosier Basketball Magazine in 2010, Gliesmann is the school’s all-time leader in blocks and gathered in 595 rebounds in her career. Guard Sarah Hunter becomes the second product of Mason (OH)

High School to become part of the program in as many seasons, joining Kayla Lamotte. As a senior, Hunter averaged 8.0 points, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals a game. Guard Abby Jump comes to WSU after averaging 12.2 points per game with 72 made threes for Ryle High School in Kentucky as a senior while AAU teammate Teonia McCune, a 6-3 center, averaged 16.1 points and 16.3 rebounds per game last season at Fern Creek High School in Louisville. The final newcomer, forward Breanna Stucke, averaged 12. 4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game as a senior for nearby Tippecanoe High School.

Schedule

After playing just 11 regular-season games at home last season, including only two of their first 10, Wright State has 15 on this year’s slate, including an in-season tourna-ment for the first time since being in Division I. The Raiders open at home for the first time since 2003-04 on Sun-day, November 13, against Ball State before hosting Delaware State on November 19. WSU then hits the road for its next five games, includ-ing matchups versus Big 12 opponent Missouri and a rematch against Buffalo to end November. The road swing continues into December with games at Morehead State, where Bradbury coached for three seasons, and at crosstown rival Dayton on December 6. Following a home game against Southern Illinois and a trip to Miami,

the Raiders will host the Wright State Invitational Presented by Holiday Inn December 18-20, marking the first time WSU has hosted an in-season tournament since 1986-87, the fi-nal season in Division II. Central Michigan, Longwood and Southeast Missouri round out the field. Wright State then turns its atten-tion to the 18-game Horizon League slate, which begins on Wednesday, December 28 with a home game against Valparaiso. The Raiders host Butler, who advanced to the Women’s NIT last season, on New Year’s Eve while defending league champ and Sweet Sixteen participant Green Bay comes to town on January 12. Fel-low WBI participant Cleveland State rounds out the home schedule on February 25. The Horizon League Tournament begins on Monday, March 5 and continues through Sunday, March 11, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

The 2011-12 season will feature a new videoboard inside Wright State’s Nutter Center

Mike Bradbury was named as the sixth Raider women’s basketball coach at Wright State on April 21, 2010 and he hasn’t stopped.

Last year was a year of firsts for the WSU women’s basketball program as it played in its first post-season tournament as a division I school when it hosted two round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The team also recorded the most wins in division I with a 20-13 record. Three Raiders received Horizon League honors--LaShawna Thomas first team, Molly Fox second team and Shaunda Sandifer Newcomer Team.

Bradbury, who led Morehead State to a 50-44 record over three seasons, posted a 22-11 slate in 2009-10, including a bid to the post-season Women’s Basketball Invitational. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Xavier and Cincinnati.

“Mike emerged from a great pool of candidates,” Grant said. “His success as head coach at Morehead State along with his recruiting

experience in this region made him extremely appealing to us. He has been a key recruiter in this region and helped secure several Top 25 recruiting classes to Xavier and Cincinnati, not to mention a highly-ranked class in his first year at Morehead State.”

Bradbury was an integral part in signing the nation’s top-ranked player at Xavier in 2006-07. While at UC, he helped sign three top 25 classes. In each of his last ten seasons as an assistant coach, his teams qualified for postseason play. In all, 12 of the 17 teams he has been involved with have made postseason appearances, and nearly every team has posted a .500 record or better.

Bradbury spent five seasons at Xavier, and all five resulted in postseason appearances, including two NCAA tournament berths. In his initial season at Xavier, in 2002-03, the Musketeers went 20-10 overall and advanced the NCAA Tournament first round after posting a 12-19 record the season before. In 2006-07, Bradbury helped lead XU to a 26-8 record and another NCAA Tournament berth. In between, his teams made three consecutive WNIT appearances, including a quarterfinal game in 2004-05. In his five seasons, Xavier was 106-50 (.679 winning percentage).

Prior to his time at Xavier, Bradbury was a top assistant coach and the primary recruiter for crosstown school Cincinnati for six years, where he helped the Bearcats to two NCAA Tournament

berths and a 127-57 record (.690 winning percentage). His UC career culminated in the 2001-02 squad going 27-5 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament second round. He also helped guide the 1998-99 team to a 22-9 record and a first-round NCAA game. Bradbury’s time at UC resulted in three WNIT appearances as well.

Bradbury went to Cincinnati after one season at VCU and one at East Tennessee State. At ETSU, his 1995 team took sixth place in the WNIT and compiled a 21-9 record. His coaching career began at Chattanooga, where he graduated in 1993 with a degree in recreation. He spent the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons as a student assistant coach before his first full-time assistant coaching assignment came in 1993-94. The 1991-92 UTC team also advanced to the NCAA Tournament first round.

Harry Elifson, a nationally-known women’s basketball coach, enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Wright State women’s basketball program. Elifson came to WSU after serving on head coach Mike Bradbury’s staff during his three-year tenure at Morehead State.

Teaming with Bradbury, the Raiders reached new heights in 2010-11 as WSU played in its first Division I post-season tournament with two games in the Women’s Basketball Invitational and secured the program’s first 20-win season in Division I. Elifson became a legendary high school coach and one of the most successful girls basketball coaches in Florida prep history and joined the Morehead State staff after several highly successful seasons at the University of South Florida.

Elifson was an assistant coach at USF during the 2000-2003 campaigns and was promoted to Associate Head Coach from 2003-

2006. He helped lead the Bulls out of the bottom of the conference standings to three straight postseason appearances, including the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2005-06. As a primary recruiter, he landed three top 40 classes, according to the All-Star Girls Report.

While at South Florida, he was instrumental in signing Jessica Dickson, the 2004 Big East Freshman of the Year who has since advanced to play in the WNBA. Elifson also helped mentor USF to its first-ever WNIT berth in 2003-2004 and again helped lead the Bulls to the WNIT in 2004-2005. Also that season, the Bulls posted the program’s best-ever record at 21-11.

Elifson made a name for himself coaching at Boca Ciega High School in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he led the girls varsity team from 1989-2000. Taking a team that had fallen on hard times, Elifson completely revitalized the shape of the program, winning two Florida Class 5A state titles in 1995 and 1996 and was a state semifinalist in 1999. During the 1995-96 season, Boca Ciega climbed as high at 18th nationally in the USA Today rankings.

His career record at BCHS was 234-87 (.730 winning percentage), and he coached five players that moved on to Division I schools. In all, 11 of his players earned college athletic scholarships. He led BCHS to three regional titles, three regional runners-up finishes, four conference championships, and 11

district titles. With his team’s success came

numerous state and national honors. He was inducted into the Boca Ciega High School Hall of Fame in 2004 and was a finalist for the 1997 National High School Coach of the Year. He earned the National High School Coaches Association Region III Coach of the Year award in 1997 and was awarded the 1996 Florida Coaches Association Coach of the Year. He was also the Pinellas County Coach of the Year in 1993, 1995, 1996 and 1997 and was the St. Petersburg Times Coach of the Year in 1995 while earning the same distinction from the Tampa Tribune in 1995 and 1996. In addition, he has experience coaching the best girls basketball athletes in the nation as he was the head coach of the East team at the 2000 Adidas High School All-American game.

An Iowa native, Elifson attended Clinton High School before earning his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Driver Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1986. He began his career as instructor and coach at Holy Family School in St. Petersburg and was also an assistant boys basketball and football coach at St. Petersburg Catholic High School before moving on to Boca Ciega.

Valerie King, the career record holder for three-pointers in University of Cincinnati (UC) and Conference USA (C-USA) history, enters her second season as an assistant coach with the Wright State women’s basketball program. King comes to WSU after serving on head coach Mike Bradbury’s staff during his three-year tenure at Morehead State.

Her expertise in outside shooting helped mold Morehead State into one of the nation’s top three-point shooting teams. In 2009-10, the Eagles were the NCAA Division I leader in three-pointers made at 10.3 per game and junior guard Chynna Bozeman was the individual national leader with 3.7 made per contest. During the 2008-09 campaign, MSU led all NCAA and NAIA teams in three-pointers attempted.

King was a four-year starter for the Bearcats from 2000-01 through 2003-04 and ended her career as the all-time leader with 338 three-

pointers - which is also the C-USA record. King is also the all-time career leader in games played (126), three-pointers attempted (847), three-point percentage (.399) and free throw percentage (.866).

King scored 2,156 career points to rank second all-time at Cincinnati and was just 201 points shy of the career record. She is just one of three Bearcats to score 2,000 or more points in a career (Oscar Robertson, Cheryl Cook). A Conference USA All-Decade selection, her point total ranks fourth among all C-USA players in league history.

King also holds the top three spots on UC’s season chart for three-pointers and has four of the top 10, including a season and C-USA best 101 treys in 2001-02. She also is listed three times each among Cincinnati’s season leaders in free throw percentage and three-point percentage and holds the school, conference and Fifth Third Arena record with 46 points in a game against Charleston Southern in 2003.

Among her many acco-lades, King was named First-Team All-Conference in 2001-02 and 2002-03 and Second-Team All-Conference in 2003-04. She was also awarded the C-USA Tournament MVP in 2001, was a five-time Player of the Week honoree during her career and was named Honorable Mention All-America by Basketball Times in 2002. She was signed as a free agent by the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA after her collegiate career

and spent a short time playing professionally.

The Bearcats appeared in the postseason in each of King’s four seasons, including NCAA tournaments appearances in 2002 and 2003. On October 27, 2010, King was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

A native of Washington Court House, Ohio, King graduated with a degree in communication from Cincinnati in 2004 and earned a master’s degree in sports administration from the University of Louisville.

Katrina Merriweather, a former assistant at Purdue, UIC and Cincinnati, is in her second season as an assistant coach at Wright State, having joined the staff in September, 2010.

An assistant for the Boilermakers from 2003-06, Merriweather served as the program’s recruiting coordinator and assisted with scouting along with coaching the guards.

In 2003-04, her first year at Purdue, Merriweather assisted the Boilermakers in a 29-4 campaign, a season that saw Purdue win the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. She also played a major role in recruiting a five-player class rated in many scouting services’ top 10.

Merriweather’s recruiting success carried over the following year, as she helped sign a class rated in the top 10 by Blue Star Basketball. While she was scouring gyms nationwide, Merriweather also filled her role in Mackey Arena, helping guide one

of the youngest teams in Purdue history to a 17-win season and an NCAA Tournament berth.

During the 2005-06 season, Purdue finished 26-7 and again advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 before falling to top-ranked North Carolina. The Boilermakers were second in the Big Ten standings and were runner-up in the conference tournament. The recruiting class was ranked third nationally by Blue Star Basketball.

Before coming to Purdue, Merriweather served as an assistant coach for a year at UIC. Charged with performing duties such as travel, film exchange, scouting and recruiting correspondence, Merriweather was part of head coach Lisa Ryckbosch’s staff that guided the Flames to a 17-11 record in 2002-03.

Merriweather began her collegiate coaching career at Cincinnati, her alma mater. As a graduate assistant during the 2001-02 season, Merriweather handled scouting and film duties. The Bearcats posted a 26-5 record that year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

A native of Indianapolis, Merriweather graduated from Cincinnati in 2001 with a degree in English literature and earned a second degree in secondary education in 2002. Under head coach Laurie Pirtle, the Bearcats advanced to postseason play all four years during Merriweather’s career, competing in the NCAA

Tournament in 1999 and the WNIT in 1998, 2000 and 2001. During her career, Cincinnati posted an 83-41 record.

Along with her college coaching career, Merri-weather has also coached AAU basketball for The Family, Inc., based in Indianapolis, and has served as a summer camp coach at several universities.

A 1997 graduate from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Merriweather was a member of the 1997 Indiana All-Star Team.

Progress has always been a major part of Bob Grant’s strong suits through the years and that has certainly shown in his tenure as Director of Athletics at Wright State University as he enters his fourth year in the position.

Being named in the summer of 2008, the Dayton-area native and Wright State graduate was no newcomer to the Raiders as he has been involved in every aspect of the department since hired as development director in 1992. Since taking the reins, Grant has focused on the all aspects of the department and grown the University’s and Raider name in the public through initiatives to spotlight the student-athlete. Among these has been the continuation of an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for 27 straight quarters, revamping the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, signing a deal that included Nike as the major equipment and uniform supplier and helping create more national exposure such as the men’s basketball team appearance on the ESPN format a WSU-record six times in 2010-11.

This type of focus has led to bigger and better exposure that resulted in upgrading schedules and a significant increase in sponsorships and fund-raising. Part of these includes a new cell phone deal with Sprint and tremendous facility improvements have been planned such turf to soccer fields and light to the softball stadium

and many more plans. Success on the field has blossomed as well recently as WSU had its highest finish in the Horizon League’s McCafferty Trophy standing since 2003, men’s basketball recorded another successful campaign with a 19-win season and the women’s soccer team posted a sixth straight 10-win season while women’s basketball advanced to its first-ever Division I post-season tournament. Success off the field has also translated into a new “home” for the soccer teams as the Rinzler Project will transform Alumni Field into one of the best complexes in the midwest.

This success has led to coaches being hired away to BCS schools such as Clemson and Arkansas but also has afforded Grant the opportunity to hire high-caliber head coaches. Through the years, he has had a hand in the hiring of each coach that patrols the Raiders’ sideline through the recent years. In his short time as Director of Athletics and under difficult financial strains and budget cuts, Grant has instituted other changes to improve the fan and the student-athlete experience such as the Raider Lounge, a new Kids Zone, “Lights Out” introductions for basketballs and a new Raider branding within the Nutter Center. Prior to being named Director of Athletics, Grant implemented a comprehensive fund raising plan for athletics many of which are still in use today.

Grant cultivated and oversaw the “Raider Club” annual giving program, the Raider auction, golf outings, fan trips, special events and the department’s dealer car program. Paramount among Grant’s accomplishments were the department’s success under his supervision in countless fund raising and development projects, such as The Platinum Seating Program, The Mills Player Complex, Alumni Soccer Field, The Schwarz Hall of Fame Lobby, Alumni Soccer Dugouts and the Setzer Pavilion/Mills Morgan Center. Grant spearheaded athletics department search committees that have hired over

a half dozen coaches and administrators including, most recently, conference championship coaches Brad Brownell and Rob Cooper from men’s basketball and baseball, respectively.

In 2006, Grant initiated the athletics department’s first-ever strategic plan. This plan is currently serving as a short and long-term roadmap guiding the department into the future. Grant took over supervision and oversight for the department’s $8 million budget in 2006. Monitoring closely with the athletics’ business manager, Grant worked with all head coaches on fiscal issues including budget planning, preparation, management and evaluation.

Beginning in 1999, Grant took on sport supervision, closely overseeing individual teams on a day-to-day basis. Grant dealt directly with head coaches on all facets of their programs including scheduling, recruiting, academics, discipline and annual evaluations. His experience in this area included oversight of swimming & diving, women’s soccer and softball programs as well as the men’s basketball, men’s soccer, golf and baseball programs. In 1997 Grant directed the development of all-new athletic logos, resulting in a significant increase in the university’s licensing revenue. He served on the university’s licensing committee from 1997-2005, oversaw the marketing and promotions area from 1997-2002 and directed the Hall of Fame voting/induction process from 1992-2002. Among his professional highlights, Grant was a 1994 NCAA speaker/presenter at the annual NACDA conference in Atlanta, Georgia, and was awarded the 1998 Wright State President’s Award for Excellence in collaboration.

He also graduated from The Sports Management Institute in January, 2006. Grant received his MBA in marketing from Wright State in June, 2000 and is currently an adjunct instructor in the Raj Soin College of Business. He and his wife, Kim, have a daughter, Jordan, and a son, Braden.
