The 2010 volleyball season looks to be brighter than ever at ETSU. Head coach Lindsey Devine and her staff feature an experienced group of six seniors to go along with one of the most highly anticipated recruiting classes in ETSU volleyball history.

Devine returns all but three players from last year including five of the seven starters. The senior class includes Lauren Baufield, Whitney Cogburn, Desiree Dyck, Dani Howe, Alysa Long, and Erin Ryan. This group will look to provide the leadership necessary to help the Bucs reach the ultimate goal of an Atlantic Sun Championship.

“With the strong play of the six seniors during the spring they know that this is their last year to leave their mark on the program,” said Devine. “With their commitment during the spring and summer we feel that they have put themselves in the best position to compete in the fall.”

In addition to the experienced attack, the Bucs will welcome in a group of five talented newcomers that looks to be one of the top classes in the Atlantic Sun. The collective group has already earned ETSU Honorable Mention honors by PrepVolleyball.com’s list of top recruiting classes in 2010.

“As a staff we really took our time and really watched these young ladies over the past two years,” added Coach Devine. “We wanted to find players that were the ideal fit for our program and I am very excited about this group of newcomers.”

Headlining the group is outside hitter Megan Devine, the reigning Gatorade Tennessee High School Player of the Year and PrepVolleyball.com All-American. Libero Kiley Tamblyn also looks to make an immediate impact after two highly successful seasons at El Camino College. Tamblyn was named First-Team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) this past season after leading the South Coast Conference in digs.

Nici DeVries comes to ETSU from Orangeville, Illinois, where she was a four-time all-conference honoree as a setter for the Orangeville High School volleyball team. DeVries will be called upon to provide much needed depth for the Bucs at the setter position. Summer Kremer is an outside hitter from Mills River, N.C.,

who will also provide depth at the position and should see court time in her first season with the Bucs.

At the net, the Bucs bring back a very deep group including a pair of former A-Sun All-Freshman selections in McKayla Barber and Desiree Dyck. Also back at the net for her senior year is the talented Alysa Long. Barber had a very strong 2009 season, leading the team in blocks and finishing the year with an impressive 11 matches with double-digit kills. Her athleticism and strong arm make her a force for the Bucs in the middle. Long proved to be an extremely beneficial pickup after transferring from Georgia State. She finished the season with 220 kills and a team-best .316 attack percentage. The .316 clip was the fourth best total in school history.

Whitney Cogburn, a senior leader and an extremely versatile player, has been on the right side for much of her career, but this season she will see most of her time as the team’s starting setter. She led the team with 270 kills on the season and finished with 11 double-doubles just a year ago. Lauren Baufield heads into her senior year after a successful 2009 campaign where she earned career highs in attack percentage, assists, aces, and digs. ETSU also returns middle blocker Jamie Stancliff who provided the Bucs with some much-needed depth in the middle. Erin Ryan finished second on the team in kills and also had 12 matches of double-digit kills. She should get plenty of opportunities to score at the net.

The 2010 schedule will test the Bucs early with a handful of highly competitive tournaments to help them prepare for a full Atlantic Sun Conference slate. The A-Sun schedule will feature a single round robin format for the first time since 2007. The previous two years consisted of teams playing each other twice, once at home and once on the road.

“With the single round robin every game is important and I think that is one thing our team learned from last year,” added Devine. “We did not capitalize on the games that we needed last year to put us in a position to make it to the conference tournament.

“Every night we need to leave it all out on the floor and if we can do that we will have a chance to be in a good position at the end of the year.”

York ‘88Head CoachEighth Season

Lindsey Devine

Lindsey Devine begins her eighth season at the helm of the ETSU volleyball program. Under Devine’s watch, the 2009 squad was one of just 94 schools in the country to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Additionally, the Bucs earned more recognition by AVCA as the 2010 recruiting class was named “Honorable Mention.”

Devine led the Bucs to a fourth straight Atlantic Sun Tournament appearance in 2008. Under Devine’s coaching, a very young squad finished at 12-20 overall in 2008, winning its first Atlantic Sun Conference tournament match against Mercer. Devine saw freshman McKayla Barber excel in 2008 as she was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman and tournament team. In her first six years as head coach, Devine accumulated a total of 90 victories, along with five conference tournament appearances.

Since Devine’s arrival at ETSU, her teams have had an equally impressive record in the classroom. In 2008 nine players earned Atlantic Sun All-Academic honors, including returnees McKayla Barber, Lauren Baufield, Desiree Dyck, Jen Neice, Kristan Provchy, Erin Ryan, and Jamie Stancliff, as well as departed players Kelley Coker and Mallory Kiley. Devine’s Lady Bucs accrued a team GPA of 3.18 for the 2008-09 academic year, ranking among the best in the ETSU athletic department.

Devine saw her first player reach the professional ranks in 2007 as former standout Crystal Palmer spent the year playing with AOK Osijek, Akademski (Academic) Odbojkaski (Women’s Volleyball) Klub (Club) of Osijek in Croatia. Also in 2007, another of Devine’s players, Kaena Apana was named one of the top five liberos in the country by Collegiate Volleyball Update. Apana was seventh in the nation in digs, and broke four A-Sun records and three ETSU records. In 2006, the ETSU squad finished 25 - 7 overall, the most wins since 1991. This successful team set a new school record with a 17-match win streak en route to compiling a perfect 9-0 record in conference and captured the first A-Sun regular season title in school history. Seniors Nani Emerson and Jennifer Sartor and juniors Kaena Apana and Callie Kiselich all earned All-Conference honors, while Desiree Dyck was placed on the All-Freshman Team.

HYDROWORXWithout a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

BUCSPORTSThe Jerry Robertson BucSports Athletic Medicine Center serves as both the health center for all Buccaneer Athletics as well as an outpatient health center for the ETSU campus and Johnson City community. Athletic trainers, physical therapists, and a primary care sports medicine physicians help to provide a comprehensive medical program to all patients. Completed in 2001, BucSports provides a variety of opportunities for physical therapy students, medical students and resident physicians interested in the field of sports medicine.

FLUROSCANThe “Mini C Arm” located in the athletic training room allows for quick and efficient exams by the team physician for those athletes that might need an x-ray.

GENERAL ATHLETIC TRAINING AREAThe general athletic training area is approximately 3500 square feet and services the day-to-day practice and competition preparation for the entire athletic department. With 17 treatment tables, various modalities and a large exercise area the general athletic training area allows multiple teams to receive treatment at the same time. Attached to the general athletic training area are three private rooms. Each room is equipped with a treatment table and combination therapy unit as well as one other distinguishing characteristic. The “Normal” room is for IV therapy, the “College” room is for casting and splinting, and the “University” room is for traction.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 26th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sp ort Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology, Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research.

The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport

teams2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to

coaches regarding coaching practices. 3. Advising on the Training Process4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction

between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.
