THE COACH: Steve Sarkisian was introduced as the new head coach of the Washington football team on Dec. 8, 2008. From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didn’t think it would take long to turn the program around and get it back to the high level of success that UW football has enjoyed throughout its history. If the 2009 season was an indication, Sarkisian was right. Washington, which posted a winless season for the first time in school history the year before Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvement of five victories over the previ-ous year. No BCS-conference school in the nation could boast such improvement in terms of wins in 2009. And, Sarkisian’s Husky squad pulled off that feat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the season bowl-eligible. Im-provements came in nearly every category. Washington scored 26.1 points per game, nearly double their per-game average in 2008 (13.2). Meanwhile, UW op-ponents scored nearly 12 points fewer per game, dropping from an average of 38.6 to 26.7. Thus, the Huskies’ average scoring margin made a drastic improvement of nearly 25 points. Total offense was up more than 110 yards per game while total defense improved to the tune of 62 fewer yards per game allowed. Rushing offense, rushing defense, passing offense, punting, punt returns, sacks, turnovers and third-down conversion rate, among others, all made marked improvement. But most of all, owing to Coach Sarkisian’s stated top goal, the Huskies played hard and earned respect from each and every opponent. The result was not only more wins, but a reinvigorated Husky Stadium and momentum. From a memorable 16-13, last-second victory over third-ranked USC, to a near-miraculous victory over Arizona thanks to a late interception. From the first shutout in the Apple Cup since 1964 (30-0 over Washington State) to a season-crowning, 42-10 victory over 19th-ranked California, the season was full of highlights and good memories. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth of experience as a quarterbacks coach and offen-sive coordinator. His string of success is nearly unprecedented as, during his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one of the nation’s most consistent and dominant offenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as the Trojans’ assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He had also previously served as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), quarterbacks coach (2002-03) and as an offensive assistant (2001) at USC, for a total of seven seasons there. During his seven seasons as a member of the Trojans’ staff, the team has posted a combined 74-15 record. As offensive coordinator, his record was 22-3. Aside from his various roles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., in 2000, his first coaching job.Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiate and pro levels. After his stand-out career at Brigham Young University, he was played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for three seasons (1997-99). He had a record-setting two-year (1995-96) career at BYU, playing under legendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-of-824 passes (66.6 percent) for 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His 162.0 career passing efficiency rat-ing ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation in passing efficiency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conference champion Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, earned second-team All-America honors and played in the East-West Shrine Game and Hula Bowl. As a junior in 1995, he earned all-conference honors and led BYU to the WAC title. Sarkisian transferred to BYU from El Camino Junior College, where he played two seasons (1993-94). He was a first-team Junior College All-America selection as a sophomore and earned all-conference honors in 1993 as a freshman. He also played baseball at El Camino in 1993. He originally enrolled at USC as a baseball player before trans-ferring. Sarkisian was a standout football and baseball player at West Torrance (Calif.) High. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from BYU in 1997 after receiving his associate’s degree from El Camino in 1994.

COACHING STAFF: Washington’s assistant coaching staff returns entirely in tact from last season. Last year, every member of the staff was new to the UW (though a couple had worked at the UW in prior staffs). While there are a few of coaches who made their way to Washington via USC, like head coach Steve Sarkisian, more notably, many of the new coaches have very specific ties to the Northwest. Nick Holt is the UW’s defensive coordinator, the role he served at USC for three seasons prior to his arrival in Seattle. Holt, however, is tied to the Pacific Northwest by way of the fact that he was head coach at Idaho in 2004 and 2005. He was also an assistant with the Vandals from 1990-97. Offensive coordinator and QBs coach Doug Nussmeier, who grew up in the Portland, Ore., area was a star quarterback at Idaho, where he passed for 10,824 career yards and won the Walter Payton Award (the I-AA Heisman). He’s also in the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame, just like running backs coach Joel Thomas. Thomas, a native of Port Ange-les, Wash., is still the Vandals’ all-time leader in rushes, rushing yards and rushing TDs. Offensive line coach and run game coordinator Dan Cozzetto, who went to high school in Spokane, is another Idaho grad. Cozzetto, who was also the Wash-ington line coach in 2003, came to the UW from Arizona State, but also coached at Idaho under former head coach Dennis Erickson. Safeties coach Jeff Mills, who played his college football at Western Washington, was a graduate assistant at the UW in 1990 and 1991 under coach Don James. He helped the Dawgs to Pac-10 titles both seasons and the national championship in ‘91. Mills has also coached at Idaho. Defensive line coach/special teams coordinator/recruiting coordinator Johnny Nansen grew up in Long Beach, Calif., but played football at Washington State and came to Seattle after spending five seasons at Idaho (including two under Holt). Finally, as to the Idaho connection, linebackers coach Mike Cox is a native of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, played for the Vandals under Erickson and former Husky head coach Keith Gilbertson, and coached in Moscow from 1987-94. He came to Washington from the St. Louis Rams. Cornerbacks coach Demetrice Mar-tin was new to the Northwest last year, having previously worked with Sarkisian at USC. Another newcomer to this part of the country, receivers coach Jimmie Dougherty, played at Missouri and had most recently coached at the University of San Diego. Washington’s two graduate assistants are Mike Anderson (defense) and Brent Miller (offense). Anderson played at Idaho under Holt and is a native of Lewiston, Idaho. Miller, whose playing days at Arizona State ended with the 2007 season, once scored a game-winning touchdown in overtime at Husky Stadium.

ENTIRE STAFF RETURNS: For the first time in two decades, the entire Husky football coaching staff returns in 2010. The head coach and all nine full-time as-sistants are back from the 2009 staff. The last time that happened at Washington was in 1990, when head coach Don James’ entire staff returned after the 1989 season. Incidentally, both graduate assistants also return in 2010, though that wasn’t the case in 1990, when more GAs were allowed on a staff.

HUSKIES vs. COUGARS HISTORY: The Washington-Washington State series dates back to 1900, when the teams played to a 5-5 tie in Seattle, but only since 1962 has the winner been awarded the Apple Cup trophy. Prior to the institution of the Apple Cup trophy, the winner of the Washington-WSU game was awarded the Governor’s Trophy from 1934 to 1961. Washington holds a commanding 65-31-6 edge in the 102-game series, including a 33-14 record in Apple Cup games. The UW is 37-15-5 against WSU in games played in Seattle, Washington is 8-6 in games played in WSU's Martin Stadium as the first UW-WSU game wasn't played there until 1982 (WSU's "home" games against UW were played in Spokane from 1950 to 1980 and Martin Stadium opened in 1972). UW is 28-14-1 in away games in the series, including games played in both Spokane and Pullman. The Huskies have won eight of the last 12 Apple Cups. Last season, the Huskies posted the first Apple Cup shutout since 1964 with a 30-0 win over the Cougars at Husky Stadium, breaking a two-game losing streak in the series. Two seasons ago in Pullman, the Cougars prevailed, 16-13, in double overtime. Three years ago at Husky Stadium, Alex Brink passed for 399 yards and hit Brandon Gibson with a pair of fourth-quarter TDs to lead

WSU to a 42-35 win. The Huskies broke another two-game losing streak with a 35-32 win in Pullman in 2006. In 2005 at Martin Stadium, the Cougars beat the Dawgs, 28-25, behind a solid performance from Brink, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. Before that, in 2003, Washington pulled a third-straight upset (by AP ranking) in the series when an unranked Husky team notched a 27-19 win over No. 8 Washington State. In 2002 in Pullman, in a game that surely ranks as one of the most memorable ever in the series, Washington shocked the No. 3 Cougars with a triple-overtime, 29-26 win, despite trailing by 10 with only 4:30 to play. In 2001, when the two teams met at Husky Stadium, the 16th-ranked Huskies upset the No. 9 Cougars with a 26-14 win.

WASHINGTON-WSU TIES: While Johnny Nansen is the only member of the UW coaching staff to have played at Washington State, he’s one of a number of Cougars who are familiar with the Palouse thanks to having played or coached at Idaho, located about seven miles east of WSU’s campus. UW assistants Nick Holt, Mike Cox, Doug Nussmeier, Dan Cozzetto, Joel Thomas, Jeff Mills and Nansen all either worked at and/or played for Idaho. Nansen earned three letters (1994-96) as a linebacker for Washington State. None of the members of the UW and WSU coaching staffs have worked together. However, Nansen played at WSU during the tenure of current WSU wide receivers coach Mike Levenseller. Only three Husky players come from the eastern part of the state of Washington: WR Cody Bruns (Prosser), OG Ryan Tolar (Pasco) and DT Cameron Elisara (Spokane/Ferris), whose father Matt lettered for the Cougars from 1979 to 1981. Husky sophomore Desmond Trufant’s brother, Marcus, was an All-America corner at WSU. On the flip side, WSU RS-freshman David Gilbertson is the son of former Husky head coach Keith Gilbertson and WSU’s Casey Locker is a first cousin of UW quarterback Jake Locker. While there aren’t that many Huskies from the eastern side of the state, there are plenty of Cougar players from this side of the Cascades. And of course, a number of Huskies and Cougars played with or against one another in their high school days. Elisara attended Ferris, as did WSU’s Jared Karstetter, Connor Hal-liday and Elliott Bosch. Husky safety Nate Williams and WSU’s Nolan Washington both went to Kennedy High. The UW’s Cody Habben, Cooper Pelluer and William Chandler attended Skyline High with WSU’s Zach Enyeart and Gino Simone. UW safety Justin Glenn went to Kamiak, as did WSU’s Skylar Stormo. Coug Jamal Atofau and Eric Block and Husky Brendan Lopez are both Bellevue High products while UW’s Keith Price and Will Shamburger were classmates at St. John Bosco in L.A. along with WSU’s Leon Brooks (WSU’s Tyree Toomer was one year older at the same school). Husky Cole Sager and Cougar Anthony Furney both went to Burlington-Edison HS in Skagit County while UW senior Brandon Huppert and WSU’s Kyle McCartney and Casey Hamlett all went to Edmonds-Woodway. Husky safety Nate Fellner and WSU QB Jeff Tuel are both 2009 graduates of Clovis West HS in Fresno. Lastly, Huskies Senio Kelemete, Luther Leonard and Tobias Togi all went to Seattle’s Evergreen High, as did WSU’s Corey Laufasa.

dAWGS ANd THE NORTHWEST: Washington’s oldest and longest rivalries are against the other three other northwest Pac-10 schools. The Huskies have faced Washington State 102 times, Oregon in 103 games and Oregon State on 94 occa-sions. Washington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies lead the Ducks 58-40-5, Washington State 65-31-6 and Oregon State 57-34-4. Combined, Washington has a 180-105-15 (.625) record against its northwest rivals. Washington has played all three of the Northwest teams in a season on 81 prior occasions. Over those 81 seasons in which Oregon, OSU and WSU were all on the UW schedule, the Dawgs have swept all three 28 times. In the meantime, the Huskies have lost to all three in the same season on only seven occasions.

T E A M N O T E SPLAYING THE TRUE FRESHMEN: In the BYU game, Washington set a school record by utilizing 13 true freshmen. The largest number of true freshmen every to play in a season at the UW was 12, in 2008. Against Syracuse, a 14th first-year man played. Here’s a list of freshmen who have played this year: TB Jesse Callier, CB Gregory Ducre, FB Zach Fogerson, LB Princeton Fuimaono, LB Garret Gilliland, TE Michael Hartvigson, DE Hau’oli Jamora, OL Erik Kohler, S Sean Parker, LB Cooper Pelluer, OL Colin Porter, DT Sione Potoa’e, WR Kevin Smith and S Taz Stevenson. Additionally, eight true freshmen have started at least one game this season: Callier, Fuimaono, Gilliland, Jamora, Kohler, Porter, Potoa’e and Smith.

THE REd ZONE: Both Washington and its opponents have had a good deal of success in the red zone (inside the opponent’s 20-yard line) this season. The Huskies are 27-for-29 with 19 TDs and UW opponents are 40-for-44 with 30 TDs. Here’s a breakdown of the Huskies and their opponents in the red zone this year:

CAPTAINS: At the “Raise the Woof!” kickoff celebration held on Aug. 27, the four captains for the 2010 season, as voted by their teammates, were revealed. They are senior LB Mason Foster (Seaside, Calif.), junior offensive tackle Senio Kelemete (Seattle, Wash.), senior QB Jake Locker (Ferndale, Wash.) and senior S Nate Williams (Renton, Wash.). Locker was also voted as a season captain in 2009. Additionally, at each game, two game captains accompany the regular four on to the field for the coin flip. Here’s a list of those:

at BYU: Cort Dennison, Nick Montana vs. Syracuse: Victor Aiyewa, Andrew Hudson vs. Nebraska: Greg Walker, Josh Shirley at USC: Chris Robinson, Princeton Fuimaono vs. Arizona State: Jesse Callier, Micah Hatchie vs. Oregon State: Victor Aiyewa, Colin Tanigawa at Arizona: Justin Glenn, Josh Shirley vs. Stanford: J. Atoe, M. Criste, M. Hatchie, S. Parker, B. Riva, C. Tanigawa at Oregon: Adam Long, Willis Wilson vs. UCLA: Victor Aiyewa, Peter Follmer at California: Taz Stevenson, Lawrence Lagafuaina

FINISHING FIRST OR SECONd: Washington has finished either first or second in the conference (including ties) in 18 of the last 33 seasons, dating back to a fourth-place finish in 1976. Over that span, Washington has won the champion-ship (outright or shared) eight times – 1977, 1980, 1981, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 2000 – while finishing second 10 other times.

THE 100-YARd FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 171-52-3 (.763) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies have five games with 100-yard rushing performances this year: Chris Polk vs. Syracuse (117); Polk vs. Oregon State (105); Jake Locker at USC (110); andPolk (138) and Jesse Callier (107) vs. UCLA – all wins for the UW – and Polk (110) vs. ASU, a Husky loss.

HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 75 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 62-12-1 (.833) in those contests. Since the 1995 season, Washington is 37-9-1 (.798) when rushing for 200 yards.

PLAYING AT HOME: Washington has gone unbeaten at home 13 times in its history, including six times in the last 20 seasons. Washington has won 87 of its last 133 (.658) games at Husky Stadium with one tie (87-45-1). Since 1980, the Huskies stand 135-56-2 (.705) at home. Since 1990, the Huskies are 55-32-1 (.631) at Husky Stadium vs. Pac-10 opponents.

HISTORIC HUSKY STAdIUM: The 2010 season marks the 90th season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. Thanks to several major renovations, Husky Stadium’s seating capacity has increased to its current total of 72,500. UW’s all-time record in Husky Stadium currently stands at 352-168-21 (.670).

FAMILY TIES: As is the case with most seasons of Husky football, there are a number of players on the Washington football team related to either current or former Huskies. The team has two sets of brothers in Jermaine (Jr. WR) and Ja-maal (Fr. LB) Kearse, and Johri (Jr. TB) and Zach (Fr. FB) Fogerson. Both Fogersons are related to both Nate Robinson (former UW football and basketball player; current Boston Celtic) and former Husky basketball standout Dion Brown. Sopho-more linebacker Jordan Wallace is the younger brother of former Husky safety C.J. Wallace. Another sophomore, Talia Crichton, is a cousin of former DE Daniel Te’o-Nesheim RS-freshman quarterback Keith Price is a cousin of former UW tail-back Jelani Harrison. A little further afield, freshman TE Michael Hartvigson is a cousin to former UW baseball pitchers Chad and Grant Hartvigson. Incidentally, at least four Huskies have close family ties to Washington State. Both Cooper Pelluer and Cameron Elisara’s fathers played at WSU, as did Husky cornerback Desmond Trufant’s brother Marcus. Sophomore safety Nate Fellner is the grandson of for-mer WSU head coach Jim Sweeney. Pelluer’s uncle Steve, however, was a UW quarterback and his father Scott was an assistant coach at Washington.

OVERALL ATHLETIC SUCCESS: Having firmly established itself as one of the top broad-based Division I intercollegiate athletics programs in the country, the University of Washington once again placed in the top echelon in the annual NAC-DA Directors’ Cup competition in the 2009-2010 academic year. Husky athletics finished 24th among all NCAA Division I institutions (283 schools earned at least a point and were ranked) in the annual standings. Washington scored a total of 770.75 points in the Director’s Cup, which is based solely on NCAA championship competition (and therefore didn’t include the Huskies’ strong showing in men’s rowing, which is not an NCAA sport). In 2009-10, Husky teams won Pac-10 titles in women’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s rowing and softball. The men’s hoops team won the Pac-10 tourney and proceeded to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament while the softball program made yet another College World Series appearance. The previous year, 2008-09, was highlighted by a number of team and individual successes, including NCAA championships in women’s cross country and softball, plus the national title in men’s rowing. The Huskies also won the Pac-10 championship in women’s cross country (posting the best possible score), men’s basketball and men’s golf and posted top-10 NCAA finishes in men’s golf, women’s rowing, women’s volleyball and women’s tennis in 2008-09.

THE PAC-12: Last month, Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott announced arrangements for the 2011 season, when the conference will expand to the Pac-12 with the addition of Colorado and Utah. Washington will play in the Pac-10’s Northern Division, along with Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford and California. Each year, teams will play the other five teams in their division and four teams in the other. The Pac-12 championship game, pitting the two division winners against one another, will be played at the home of the team with the better record.
