The goal of the United for Literacy Initiative is to:Improve the on-time graduation rate and the number of students reading at or above grade level by 50%

This countywide effort is led by the United Ways of Santa Barbara County.

UFL is a multi-stage strategy utilizing proven effective programs (Born Learning, Imagi-nation Library, Reading Plus) to work toward the 10 year goal of improving the ontime graduation rates and increasing the number of students reading at grade level.

The UFL initiative is a result of National research, United Way, and local the Power of Partnership (POPI) community engagement project that included participation from over 5,300 individuals and 230 organizations.

IMAGINE --- $1 per week provides a new age appropriate book delivered to the home of a preschooler every month, or a student access to Reading Plus, for an entire year; as well as the volunteer corps needed to promote and administer the program and interact with the families….

IMAGINE:

The impact your gift can have on the future of our communities’ workforce!

THE NORTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY UNITED WAY WELCOMES YOU TO THE 2010 MAYORS’ BALL

As President of the the Northern Santa Barbara County United Way it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2010 Mayors’ Ball.

This has been a challenging and exciting year as we have continued to build on our Live United efforts. Our focus on education, family financial

stability, and health programs continues to improve lives and create a better community for all of us.

Our economy has created greater challenges than we could have ever anticipated. Thanks to our Board, the UW staff and our generous volunteers we have been able to make an impact in the lives or our friends and neighbors far greater that I could have possibly imagined. We are working with limited financial resources and increasing needs, so I am proud of what we have accomplished. We remain confident the United Way will continue to creatively meet the needs of those we serve.

Tonight our focus is on our United for Literacy Initiative. We believe that by improving literacy we will help build more productive and fulfilling lives. This important project will benefit not only the participants but all of us who call Northern Santa Barbara County our home.

Our extraordinary volunteers are an inspiration to all of us. Once again I salute each of you who commit your time, talent and money as we continue to transform our Live United campaign from a concept to reality.

Thank you for joining us for the 2010 Mayors’ Ball. Together we will continue to change lives for the better.

For years I’ve described excellence in this way with the acronym CREDC. is for caring more than others think is practical

R. is for risking more than others think is safe

E. is for expecting more than others think is probable

D. is for dreaming more than others think is possibleThis year, I took the advice of a colleague, and added I B L E to complete a theme - CREDIBLE

I. for pursuing the impossibleB. for believing in the power of changeL. for leadership at all levels of the community, ANDE. for everyone has a stake in the outcome

BY L IV ING UNITED, WE ARE ALL MAKING A CREDIBLE DIFFERENCE IN THE FUTURE OF OUR COMMUNIT IES!Because we care at United Way, we took the risk of realigning our organization to impact more lives through early childhood education and asset building strategies that give people the opportunity to have a better life. Three years ago we launched the Financial Stability Services Partnership and today along with our partners, we are working together to provide volunteer income tax assistance and access to asset building strategies. That includes partners from the nonprofit, for-profit, government and the academic sectors. This year we will continue to enhance that effort with financial literacy initiatives. This year we began to focus on our education goals with the launch of the United for Literacy Initiative. The three programs which form the foundation of UFL are Born Learning, The Imagination Library and Reading Plus- a proven program designed to improve reading skills, comprehension, and test scores of students from the third grade through adulthood. Our goal is to increase the high school graduation rate by improving school readiness and literacy. You see, your local United Way is a small organization that tries to dream more than others think is possible. Of course, dreams are seldom made a reality without strong

support. In closing, I want to thank the Board of Directors, the staff, the volunteers, the donors and each of you here tonight for your willingness to embrace the vision of a better future. You exemplify what you’ve often heard me say: “If we all do a little, we will accomplish great things together.” Thank you for being literacy champions for United Way and for our community.
