Maj. Mitch Maury, USMC, was appointed the Naval Academy's 28th head sprintfootball coach in July 2010. Maury, who was a four-year letterwinner as a tight end atMaine from 1993-96, brings an impressive list of credentials to the Academy.

"I'm ecstatic to be here," Maury said. "After meeting with all of our players, I'mreally fired up for the season ahead. The student-athletes play for the love of the gameand each has a great attitude. We've got a great staff in place and I'm eager to get going."

While at Maine, Maury served as one of the tri-captains on the 1996 YankeeConference New England Division Champion team for coach Jack Cosgrove. He beganhis career for the Black Bears under current University of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz.

Upon graduation from Maine in the spring of 1997, Maury went to work fortwo years as a contractor for the Navy in Washington, D.C., prior to joining the MarineCorps in 1999.

Following completion of basic training, Maury attended flight school inPensacola, Fla., and Corpus Christi, Texas for a total of two years before his first activeduty tour as a KC-130 pilot sent him to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. He then went on to VMGR-452, a Reserve KC-130 Squadron located at Stewart AirNational Guard Base in Newburgh, N.Y.

The Pennsylvania native was deployed to Iraq on three occasions, mostrecently in 2005 and has accrued 2400 flight hours throughout his career.

Maury inherits a Navy sprint football team that enters the 2010 campaignwith a program-record 23-game winning streak, dating back to 2006. The Midshipmenown a 57-3 overall record, including a 37-2 mark in conference play, over the last nineseasons.

Maury replaced Maj. Jake Jenkins, USMC, whose three-year appointment endedafter the 2009 season. Jenkins posted a perfect 20-0 record in his three seasons leadingthe program.

"We've had quite a run here lately," said Maury. "The excitement around theprogram is tremendous."

2010 Season OutlookOne of the hallmarks of a successful program is consistency, and with arecord 34 Collegiate Sprint Football League titles and a 23-game win-ning streak to start the season, the Navy sprint football team truly ex-emplifies that characteristic. With first-year head coach Maj. MitchMaury, USMC, at the helm and the return of 36 letterwinners from lastseason, the Mids will look to claim their fourth consecutive league titlein 2010.

Plenty of firepower returns this season to a Navy offense that outscoredits opponents by a margin of 219-50 in 2009. A stout Navy defense thatallowed an average of just 7.1 points-per-game last season also returnsseveral key starters.

QuarterbackSenior co-captain Tyler Terronez started all seven games and was anhonorable mention All-CSFL selection last season. Terronez went 61-of-151 with nine TDs and just two interceptions in 2009, and the experi-enced quarterback has appeared in 14 games entering the 2010campaign.

Sophomore John-Rex Spivey and freshman David Lorio have shown theability to perform as well and will serve as solid backups to Terronez.

Running BacksAn area of certain strength for the Mids this season is the offensivebackfield. With several, experienced tailbacks, Navy’s ground game holdsthe key to its offensive attack this season.

“The backfield, by far, is our strongest position,” Maury said. “We havea very good, young group of backs.”

Senior Marty Meehan, junior Jordan Foley and sophomores DenzelReina and Will Harris bring different elements to the game and all willfigure into the mix in 2010.

Meehan averaged 8.9 yards on 20 carries last season, while the multi-purpose Foley racked up 185 yards and four touchdowns on the ground,139 return yards and caught two passes for 46 yards in 2009.

“Foley is such a versatile guy,” said Maury. “We can put him at receiver, too. He’s kind of a jack-of-all-trades.”

Reina was the Mids’ second-leading rusher with 347 yards last season.

The fullbacks leading the way also possess the ability to control theground game for the Mids. Sophomores D.J. Hooper and Tyshan Larrylead the group which also expects significant contributions from fresh-man David Williams.

ReceiversA talented corps of receivers, that features members from each class, will provide Terronez with dependable targets all season long.

“Receiver is another stacked position for us,” Maury said. “It’s a goodmix of guys from every class.”

Seniors JoJo Catrini and Steve Friedrick, juniors Erik Erlandson andDrew Presnell, sophomore Darrin McElroy and freshmen Mike Buckand Tracy Daniels will all get ample opportunities to make plays at thewide receiver position this season.

The leading returner is Catrini, who led Navy in catches last seasonwith 15 for 270 yards.

Kaleb Kaetterhenry returns for his senior season as the Mids’ tight end.He caught three passes for 42 yards and had one touchdown a seasonago.

Offensive LineReturning starters Cody Nissen, Sean Fergerson and All-CSFL guardMatt Williams provide the needed stability up front for the Mids. Allthree players started at least four games last season and their experi-ence will benefit newcomers Ryan Keys and Joshua Escobar, who havealready made an impact.

“The young guys have really stepped up so far,” said Maury. “The morereps they get, they better they will be.”

Senior Brandon Beckler and sophomore Drew Owens will also figureinto the Mids’ rotation up front.

Defensive LineSeniors leaders Luke Pye, Jeremy Harbaugh and Emery Persinger willanchor the defensive line; the trio combined for 65 tackles a season ago.But again, similar to other positions on the team, a solid group of un-derclassmen make the defensive line one of the team’s strengths.

“The young guys are really stepping up,” Maury said. “We have threeseniors on the defensive line, but behind them, we’ve got a couple fresh-men and sophomores that are doing a terrific job.”

One underclassman that has impressed the coaching staff is Lewistown,Pa., native Julian Jerzerick.

“Jerz is impressive for a sophomore,” said Maury. “He just seems tonever tire, his motor is constantly running.”

LinebackersNavy’s starting linebackers are also a solid group in seniors Viet Vo andCartwright Hall and sophomore Will Parker. Vo was second on theteam in tackles last season with 38, including 4.5 tackles-for-loss. Hallhad 25 stops last season while Parker stared all seven games as a fresh-man.

“Playing middle linebacker, Will is our defensive play caller,” Maury said.“That’s pretty good for a sophomore. He’s a very intelligent individual.”

Defensive BacksCo-captain Mike Nolan leads a defensive backfield that will play a sig-nificant role in the overall success of the Mids’ defense this season.Nolan joins Zzmarr Stone, Stephen Meidus and James Han; all startedat least four games last season.

“Mike is certainly our leader back there,” said Maury. “He is a straight-up football player and is impressive to watch. He has a great nose forthe ball.”

Nolan and Stone each had three interceptions last season.

“Zzmarr is a pretty big for a corner back and he’s a shutdown corner,”Maury said.

Junior Vince DeBenedetti saw action in six games last year and will beback in the mix this season as well.

“Our DBs could do great things this year,” said Maury.

Special TeamsFreshman kicker Adrian Montecinos will handle field goals and extrapoints and while just a freshman, he has shown the ability to step up im-mediately. Montecinos replaces David Reifenberg, who left as the pro-gram’s all-time leader in extra points and field goals.`

“Adrian has just been Mr. Consistency,” Maury said. “All of his kicks havebeen splitting the uprights.”

Will Parker will handle punting duties while Michael DeLong will be theteam’s kickoff specialist.

What is sprint football?Well … it’s quite simple. It’s the same as regular football. Helmet,

shoulder pads, cleats, oblong-shaped ball, 100-yard field, field goal posts, sidelines, end zones … and the list goes on. You name it and it’s in thegame. The only difference is that the players who compete in sprintmust weigh no more than 172 pounds 48 hours prior to kickoff. Butdon’t be fooled by the size, because these guys can play.

The HistoryThe evolution of 150-pound football was started in the early 1930s

by a Penn president to assure the small student-athlete an opportunityto compete in football on the intercollegiate level.Founded as the Eastern 150-Pound Football League in 1934, the orig-

inal league had seven members: Cornell, Lafayette, Pennsylvania, Prince-ton, Rutgers, Villanova and Yale. Throughout the years, a number ofteams have either joined or resigned their presence in the league. In1946, Navy fielded its first squad, with Army following suit in 1957. Thisyear, Mansfield will play a full-fledged schedule against Navy, Army, Cor-nell, Penn and Princeton.During the next 25 years, athletes became bigger forcing the weight

limit to increase from 150 pounds to 154 pounds, and later to 159pounds. At that time, the league was called the Eastern LightweightFootball League. Prior to the 1996 season, the ELFL increased theweight limit again, this time to 165 pounds just two days before thefirst game of the season. In 2004, the league made another change tothe weight requirement when it upped the maximum weight to 166pounds. Again in 2005, the weight maximum increased to 172 pounds. The 1998 season marked the elimination of the term “Lightweight”

and replaced with the word “Sprint,” a word that expresses the quick-ness, speed and caliber of play in the league, while serving as a mar-keting tool to attract new teams. That year the league was renamed theCollegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL). Five teams comprise the cur-rent CSFL and include: Army, Cornell, Navy, Pennsylvania and Princeton. The league has also produced some heavyweight alums, including Sec-

retary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who was a former standout as heplayed for Princeton in 1954. The league is not just limited to govern-ment officials but standout coaching legends as well. George Allen, who began his coaching career in 1947 as an assistant on the now-dis-banded Michigan 150-pound team, went on to become head coach ofthe Washington Redskins.

The PlayersAt weigh-ins, which are done two days in advance of kickoff, players

must report under the maximum allowed weight of 172 pounds. Sprintis very similar to wrestling in that the players constantly watch theirdiets. In addition to all the football drills that take place during practice, athletes will run several times throughout practice and in their freetime to keep the weight in check. However, after weigh-ins, players can eat what they want as most

reach 175 pounds by game day. The average weight for the athletesduring the season ranges between 155 to 175 pounds.During the off-season, players’ weights fluctuate with some going as

high as 185 pounds. However, as summer practice approaches, playersgo through their own training programs to make weight safely and getready for the new season. Height doesn’t matter in the league. Mostof the players are generally between 5’6” and 6’0” tall, but there are al-ways exceptions to the rule as some are as tall as 6’3”.The league is a perfect opportunity for players to continue compet-

ing in the sport they love. Most of the players in the league were toldthroughout their high school careers that they were too small to playat the intercollegiate level. However, this sport gives them the chanceto fulfill their dreams.Because of the players’ size, proper technique and execution are

taught rather than just bulking up. Due to this element, sprint teamsregularly beat Division III junior varsity teams that have 300 poundersscattered throughout the roster.

Naval Academy TraditionThere are few schools that can match the tradition of sprint football

at the U.S. Naval Academy. The Midshipmen have won 26 outright and 33 total league champi-

onships, both of which are the most in CSFL history. In their 63 years of competing in the sport, the Midshipmen have to-

taled an impressive 310-62-9 record for an .825 winning percentage. Inaddition to those impressive numbers, Navy has also outscored its op-ponents by an all-time score of 10,372 to 3,602, an average of 17.8points per game.In a rivalry as intense as the ‘big boy’ counterparts, Navy and Army

have battled in sprint football 68 times, with the Midshipmen comingaway victorious 37 times with one tie. Navy has rattled off a series-record 10-straight wins against its service academy rival, with two ofthe largest margins of victory in series history during this run.“This lighter side of Army-Navy is no joke,” Sports Illustrated writer

John Walters said in his article about the sport in a November 2003issue of Sports Illustrated on Campus.Former Navy head coach Maj. Joseph R. Clearfield, USMC, concurs.

“It’s just unbelievable how hard these guys (Navy and Army) play. Thiswas how football was meant to be played, with 11 guys flying aroundwith reckless abandon.”

As the undergraduate college of the Naval service, theNaval Academy prepares young men and women to be-come professional officers in the U.S. Navy and MarineCorps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on ac-tive duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy forfour years, graduating with bachelor of science degreesand reserve commissions as ensigns in the Navy or sec-ond lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy grad-uates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corpsofficers.

Founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Ban-croft, the Academy started as the Naval School on 10acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis with an originalclass of 55. In 1850 the Naval School became the UnitedStates Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effectrequiring midshipmen to study at the Academy for fouryears and to train aboard ships each summer. Congressauthorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelorof science degrees in 1933. Today, the Academy offers 18major fields of study, a wide variety of elective coursesand advanced study and research opportunities.

From the first athletic competition played on the grid-iron in 1879 to Navy's recent triumphs, several events, people, rivalries and personalities have shaped the en-tire Naval Academy athletic program. Below is a lookat just some of the history and traditions that makeNavy one of the most storied programs in all of colle-giate athletics.

ANCHORS AWEIGH"Anchors Aweigh" was written by Lt. Charles Zimmer-mann, Musical Director of the Naval Academy in 1906,with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles of the Classof 1906, as a fight song for the 1907 graduating class in-stead of the usual class march Zimmermann had com-posed for previous classes. The song made its debut atthe 1906 Army-Navy game, and when the Midshipmenwon the game, the song became traditional at this game.It gained national exposure in the 1920s and 1930s whenit was heard on the radio and was in a number of popularmovies. In 1997 a one-hour documentary on the historyof Navy football, titled "Anchors Aweigh for Honor andGlory", was produced by NFL Films. The film was deemeda success by both critics and fans alike. Here are thewords:

Stand Navy down the field,Sails set to the sky,

We'll never change our course,So Army you steer shy.Roll up the score, Navy,

Anchors Aweigh,Sail Navy down the field,And sink the Army,Sink the Army Grey

BILL THE GOATThe first recorded use of a goat mascot for Navy athleticteams was in 1893 when an animal named El Cid (TheChief) was turned over to the Brigade by young officers ofthe USS New York. El Cid helped Navy to a 6-4 triumphover Army that year. Two cats, a dog, and a carrier pigeonhave also enjoyed brief reigns as the Navy mascot, butgoats have served without interruption since 1904. BillXXXII and XXXIII and XXXIV are the current mascots. Theyare taken care of by 15 goathandlers made up of five mid-shipmen from the first, second and third classes. Thegoathandlers undergo rigorous training prior to handlingBill on the field.

BLUE & GOLDThis song was written in 1923 by Cmdr. Roy DeS. Horn,USN (Ret.) with music composed by J.W. Crosley. Follow-ing every home athletic competition, the team faces itsfans with their hands on their heart and sings the follow-ing notes:-

Now, colleges from sea to seaMay sing of colors true;

But who has better right than weTo hoist a symbol hue?

For sailors brave in battle fair,Since fighting days of old,

Have proved the sailor's right to wearThe Navy Blue and Gold

ENTERPRISE BELLFrom the bridge of the famed World War II aircraft car-rier, it has been a part of the Naval Academy traditionsince 1950. The late Admiral Harry W. Hill, then Super-intendent, was instrumental in bringing the "E" Bell to Annapolis. Itrings when the Academy observes Morning Colorsand also during special ceremonies when Navy scores a major-ity of victories over Army in any one of the three sportsseasons. The bell also rings during CommissioningWeek for those teams that beat Army and have not par-ticipated in a previous bell-ringing during the academicyear. The bell is stationed in front of Bancroft Hall.

MIDSHIPMANThe word midshipman first appeared in English in the17th century in the form of the word midshipman todesignate those men who were stationed "amidships,"i.e. in the waist or middle portion of the vessel, while onduty. By 1687, however, the second 's' had beendropped to give the current form of the word. Midship-men were originally boys, sometimes as young as sevenor eight, who were apprenticed to sea captains to learnthe sailor's trade.

In the early days of the American Navy, midshipmentrained aboard ship until they were eventually commis-sioned as ensigns. With the founding of the Naval Acad-emy in 1845, it became possible, as it still is, for amidshipman to enter the Navy directly from civilian life. The name of students at the Naval Academy changed sev-eral times between 1870 and 1902, when Congress re-stored the original title of Midshipman, and it hasremained unchanged since.

TECUMSEHThe familiar Native American figurehead facing BancroftHall and Tecumseh Court has been an Annapolis residentsince 1866. Originally, the figurehead of the USS Delawarewas meant to portray Tamanend, the great chief of theDelawares. It developed that Tamanend was a lover ofpeace and did not strike the fancy of the Brigade. Lookingfor another name, Midshipmen referred to the figureheadas Powhatan and King Philip before finally settling onTecumseh, the fierce Shawnee chieftain who lived from1768-1813. The original wooden statue was replaced aftersome 50 years in the open weather by a durable bronzereplica, presented by the Class of 1891. It is considered agood-luck "mascot" for the midshipmen, who in timespast would throw pennies at it and offer left-handedsalutes whenever they wanted a 'favor', such as a sportswin over West Point, or spiritual help for examinations. These days it receives a fresh coat of war paint and isoften decorated in various themes during football weeksand other special occasions such as CommissioningWeek.
