2010 Season Outlook The Willamette University volleyball team enters the 2010 season looking to build on the late success of the 2009 season. Last year’s team won six of its last eight games to climb to an 11-13 overall record and 8-8 in the Northwest Conference to claim fifth place. Returning to lead the way for the Bearcats is senior Molly Blankenship (OH, Spokane, WA/Spokane Falls CC). Blankenship was named Honorable Mention All-NWC after accumulating 236 kills and a team-high 25 serving aces last season. She recorded double-digit kills 13 times, including a season-high 22 kills against Whitman College on Oct. 17, 2009. Head Coach Tom Shoji has steadily improved the team since his arrival in 2008. Shoji added six freshmen to his roster to increase the team total to 19 members. The team is young on paper but the ten sophomores on the roster earned valuable playing experience as freshmen last season. There were four freshmen who started more than half of Willamette’s matches. Jaci Abeloe (Medford, OR/North Medford HS) registered 129 kills and will look to contribute again from the outside hitter and opposite positions. Brigit Miller (Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) started 23 of 24 matches at setter for the Bearcats. She recorded 865 assists, good for 9.51 assists per game. Josephine Johnston (Florence, MT/Florence-Carlton HS) and Madisyn Leenstra (Bellingham, WA/Sehome HS) both return at the middle hitter position after starting in 15 matches as freshmen. Overall, Willamette increased its height with the addition of the 2010 freshman class. The team now boasts eleven players that are 5’11” or taller. That height, combined with

depth at the setter and libero positions, will give Shoji more options to work with this season. The team was picked to finish fifth in the NWC Preseason Coaches Poll. Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Puget Sound are early favorites in the battle for the 2010 NWC Championship, according to the preseason poll. Willamette opens the season at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore. Following the WOU match, the Bearcats will participate in the Boxer Kickoff Volleyball Invitational in Forest Grove, Ore., and the California Lutheran Tournament in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Northwest Conference play begins in mid-September and the team will play all eight opponents twice.

Sophomore Brigit Miller led the team with 865 assists as a freshman in 2009.

Conference and National Affiliations

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has 447 members and is the largest NCAA division. Division III is about following your passions and discovering your potential. The college experience is a time of learning and growth. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens in the classroom, through athletics and, ultimately, by earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment, where they can push themselves to excellence. At Willamette, student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. WU often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff focus on the well-being of student-athletes.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

The National Wildlife Federation recognized WU as the nation’s higher education leader in sustainability activities. This achievement, a direct result of student-led initiatives, is further evidence that Willamette lives by its motto, producing responsible citizens of the world who are prepared to live with intention and integrity.

At Willamette, the student-faculty ratio of 10:1 allows faculty members to maintain ample office hours and serve as advisors. The professors are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. The Willamette endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings, plus the Campus Quad and athletic fields. Ford Hall, the newest academic building, was completed in 2009 and houses Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer

Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-square-foot building included an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol. In particular, Willamette students are often chosen for internships with government organizations.

Students gather to study and relax by the Mill Steam.

The clock tower and Jackson Plaza are located outside the Hatfield Library.
