IBM and LuxCloud - Press Release

IBM and LuxCloud set to conquer the cloud computing market

Complementary approaches of the two companies results in collaboration on a “shared private cloud”, tailored to the European market

Hesperange, Luxembourg, March 14, 2011 – IBM (NYSE: IBM) and LuxCloud have signed a partnership agreement covering the implementation of a cloud computing infrastructure in Luxembourg, based on the “shared private cloud.” In addition to being secure and redundant, the cloud infrastructure complies not only with the strictest standards of the banks and insurance companies but also the various laws and regulations in effect in Luxembourg, including the requirements of the Supervisory Commission for the Finance Sector (CSSF) and the National Commission for the Protection of Data (CNPD). Such compliance makes the new infrastructure well suited to finance industry clients who are concerned about the traceability of their data, as well as to international and e-commerce customers, allowing them to secure their data and computer processes while also having a specific local anchor point. In practical terms, the agreement will significantly increase the level of cloud computing expertise in Luxembourg, creating a genuine skills center that will extend Europe-wide and act as a springboard for the future development of IBM and LuxCloud.

A combination of factors have now made it essential for us to change our approach to ICT: the muddled and segmented nature of most existing IT environments; a steep rise in energy costs; an exponential increase in the volume of data; and new requirements from users, who are demanding virtually universal access to information and analysis tools in real time – and in a resilient and secure environment. For this reason, both IBM and LuxCloud were early to recognize the immense potential offered by cloud computing – the possibility of having a mutualized infrastructure, in which a number of different systems are interconnected in private or public networks, enabling businesses to lower their costs and simplify the management of their IT environments. Cloud computing is one of IBM’s three worldwide priorities, along with business analytics and its vision for a “Smarter Planet.”

“When we met IBM in December 2010, we immediately saw that our offerings complemented one another,” says Marco Houwen, CEO of LuxCloud S.A., one of the leading providers of own-brand cloud computing services in Europe. “At LuxCloud, our adaptable solutions enable resellers, software distributors and service providers to offer SMEs the applications and services available on our platform – such as the hosting of applications; e-mail and collaboration; business processes; and packages for infrastructures. LuxCloud was also aware that SMEs were looking increasingly to access operating and administrative services in ‘pay-as-you-go’ mode. So, LuxCloud has positioned itself as a facilitator of the distribution of online business services.”

The two companies’ similar business approaches – proactive and responsive – prompted them to enter into a long-term partnership, divided into two streams: one technology-based, the other commercial. From a technology point of view, LuxCloud and IBM share an infrastructure, as well as computer rooms at data centers. LuxCloud contributes its know-how in telecommunications, while IBM has extensive teams of experienced professionals, along with packaged and innovative hardware and software technologies, as well as IT capacity management services. On the commercial side, the partnership plans to take a joint approach to the market, in order to capitalize on the benefits of combining their complementary skills.

“IBM and LuxCloud now offer a cloud environment installed on Luxembourg soil, which ensures resilience and the total availability of data,” concludes Ludovic Gilles, Sales Manager Global Technology Services at IBM Luxembourg. “Our shared, private cloud model enables us to pool our resources while still guaranteeing the confidentiality of data – an essential criterion for the finance sector in Luxembourg, which is subject to extremely strict regulation. Today, the industrialization of IT centers includes consolidation, virtualization, standardization and automation. But cloud computing is more than just technology: It also enables a company to concentrate on its core business by farming out the management of its IT commodities. This announcement is just a first step – a foundation upon which various parties will come and build their high-added-value applications. And, as a result, businesses will be able to demonstrate they are even more responsive in the face of change.”

IBM & LuxCloud Platform - Financial private Cloud computing Luxembourg for Wealth@Work

IBM Services and LuxCloud offer a flexible cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) designed to provide rapid access to security-rich, enterprise-class virtual server environments adapted to the Financial Sector. With IBM you can access the robust, secure, redundant, infrastructure you need today, without a significant up-front investment. Then tap into built-in scalability that lets you add middleware or services at any time. In November 2010, IBM with support from the “Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier“(CSSF), the Luxembourg Finance Regulator and the “Commission Nationale pour la Protection des Données” (CNPD), the Luxembourg data protection authority, published a whitepaper elaborating on the regulations regarding cloud computing in the financial sector in Luxembourg. Whilst other cloud providers are focusing on the technological aspects of cloud offerings, IBM is working with the CSSF and CNPD to make sure the financial sector can adopt Cloud computing in a compliant manner with Luxembourg rules and regulations.

A bank or PSF (Professional of the Financial Sector) operating on the territory of Luxembourg must observe a number of principles regarding the confidentiality and privacy of its data. Already in 2003, the CSSF annual report detailed data confidentiality and privacy. For the financial sector, Luxembourg already benefits from a unique legal framework that allows Cloud service offerings to be proposed, the provided offering is an enterprise cloud established on the national territory.

Cloud Computing is a new model for consuming and delivering IT services, inspired by consumer internet services. The “external” aspects of cloud do bring up concerns regarding visibility and control, but also regarding privacy and accountability regulations that may depending on the workload type, discourage the adoption of certain cloud models. High value or high risk workloads, like in Luxembourg's financial sector, need direct visibility and control, significant level of assurance and a quality of protection adapted to the risk. Those requirements are best met with a “Private Cloud” model, or a “Shared Private Cloud” Model.

Next to the international “Public Cloud model” (US) solutions, IBM offers a variety of options to the Luxembourg’s companies who want to take advantage of the Cloud Computing concept but are concerned about the security or legal implications. There are several services IBM will be announcing shortly to the Luxembourg market. Specifically IBM is building a Shared Private Cloud in Luxembourg to optimize business applications, storage and smart business development and testing.

IBM focuses on what cloud computing is and how it can generate business value. IBM addresses the privacy issue regarding financial data in Luxembourg, because it is looked at as personal information and has to be managed as such. The security of financial data managed by companies is an important issue; storing and processing can only be done under strict conditions. IT service providers that have a support PFS status (Professional of the Financial Sector), are allowed to handle confidential data of financial institutions. Financial data has to remain within the borders of Luxembourg. IBM suggests several services and possibilities for cloud computing in the Luxembourg financial sector that can be tailored to the specific need of every client.

Depending on your needs, IBM will offer the server management services you need. You then get server management, middleware and data base services from IBM for a competitive monthly fee. Managed Server Services include both traditional hosting and new virtual hosting services and features multiple hardware and software support options and competitive service level agreements.

The  services provided are :         - Governance model / Project office         - Procurement of Hardware & Software, delivery in OPEX mode (as a service)         - Installation services         - Hosting services in Tier-IV data centers        - High Availability and Disaster Recovery services         - Monitoring & problem resolution         - Backup & restore         - Security management         - Network management         - Performance management & reporting on key performance and availability parameters
