The Vulcans return several key members from last year’s record-shattering campaign. Last season, Cal U established a combined 22 school records with the women’s team equaling its best finish at the PSAC Championships in the last 20-plus years. Senior Brice Myers headlines the men’s team in 2012 after repeating as the PSAC Champion in both the 60- and 110-meter hurdles last year. During the outdoor season, he placed second in the finals of the 110 hurdles at the NCAA Championships by just one one-hundredth of a second. A five-time All-American, Myers will only be competing during the outdoor season this year. The Vulcans will feature a pair of All-PSAC caliber runners in the 800-meter run this season in seniors Alex Smith and Chris Wolfe. Smith set the indoor and outdoor school records in the event last year. He has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 800 meters in each of the last two seasons. Wolfe joins the program for the indoor season after previously running at Louisville. While with the Cardinals, he qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the 800 meters and as a member of the 4x800-meter relay. After an All-American finish in cross country this fall, sophomore Aaron Dinzeo anchors the distance runners this season. He reached the NCAA provisional mark in the 5,000-meter run last spring after nearly earning All-PSAC honors during the indoor campaign. Juniors Jake Hillegas and Bruce McDaniel both return after breaking school records last season. Hillegas set the school record in the hammer throw last spring, while McDaniel broke a 20-plus year record in the decathlon. On the women’s side, Monique Sims returns after posting arguably one of the most successful debuts in school history. She broke a combined seven school records (five individual, two relay), including a pair of records that were set in the mid-1980s.
Sims was selected the PSAC Freshman of the Year during both the indoor and outdoor seasons after garnering All-PSAC honors in six events last year. Seniors Sandy Estep and Shakeria Love return after competing at the PSAC Championships in each of the last three years. Last year, Love scored at both league championships in the 400-meter run and was a member of the 4x400-meter relay with Estep during the spring. Estep scored in the 800 meters at the outdoor championships after qualifying for the 400 meters during the winter. The Vulcans return a pair of record-setting distance runners this season in senior Laurie Hall and junior Erin Kling. Hall broke the school record in the 1-mile run twice last year, while Kling established new records in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter run. Senior Khyalyani Whitaker returns as an All-PSAC candidate in the pentathlon and heptathlon. She has scored in the pentathlon at each of the last two PSAC Championships. Cal U features a pair of PSAC contenders in the hurdles as well. Junior Katurrah Hayman-Alston provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter hurdles last year after posting the third-fastest time in the PSAC. Sophomore Courtnee Whitaker figures to challenge the school record in the 60-meter hurdles after placing fifth at the league championships last year. Junior Amber Saunders returns after provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships last spring in the high jump. She placed third at the league outdoor championships with a career-best height of 1.69 meters. With the amount of experience and talent returning to both programs, the Vulcans figure to again break records in 2012 while continuing to contend at the PSAC Championships and compete at the NCAA Championships.

Daniel Caulfield enters his sixth season as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country programs and an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track & field teams. Caulfield joined Cal U after serving as the head men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at Clarion. A native of Ireland, he started coaching at his alma mater and NCAA Division II perennial
powerhouse Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. While serving as a coach with the Grizzlies, Adams State won four NCAA National Championships in women’s cross country (1998, 1999, 2003, 2004) and two NCAA men’s titles (1998, 2003). During his college career, he was a 10-time All-American and two-time NAIA National Champion and helped lead the Grizzlies’ cross country programs to National Championships in 1993-94.
Since coming to Cal U, Caulfield has mentored four-time All-American Christopher Clark, who holds PSAC records in both the 5K and 10K. He also has coached a pair of PSAC Champions in the 800 meters in Holly Urban and Clare McSweeney. McSweeney also earned All-America honors in the 800 meters at the 2010 NCAA National Championships. Last year, Matt Kroetch became the fourth different runner in school history to win the PSAC title in the 10K.

Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Roger Kingdom enters his eighth year working with the cross country and track & field programs at California University of Pennsylvania. Kingdom, the former world and American record holder in the 110-meter hurdles, serves as the Director of the Track & Field and Cross Country programs at Cal U. Kingdom is a five-time United States Outdoor Champion (1985, 1988-90 and 1995) and two-time gold medalist at the Pan American Games (1983, 1995). He also holds a World Cup gold medal (1989) and won gold at the World University Games in 1989. He remains one of only two runners to ever win consecutive Olympic titles in the 110-meter hurdles (1984 Los Angeles, 1988 Seoul). A native of Georgia, he joined the Cal U athletic program in 2004 before being named interim head track & field coach in March of the following year. Shortly thereafter, he accepted the director position for both the cross country and track & field programs. In his time as head coach, Kingdom has mentored a handful of All-Americans as well as several Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) indoor and outdoor champions.
Under Kingdom’s supervision Cal U has had at least one All-American in each of the last five years, including four-time member Christopher Clark (5,000- and 10,000-meter run) and five-time honoree Brice Myers (60- and 110-meter hurdles). The women’s program has also had two All-Americans, with current assistant coach Danielle Malay receiving honors in the 400-meter hurdles in 2008 and Clare McSweeney earning recognition in the 800-meter run in 2010. One of the most decorated athletes in Cal U history, Kingdom mentored 14-time PSAC Champion and two-time All-American Brad Rager, who excelled in the 200- and 400-meter dashes. In 2006, Kingdom and the Vulcans hosted the PSAC Championships for the first time in program history, and two years later the men’s team posted its best finish in school history at the indoor league championships. Kingdom is a 2002 graduate from Pittsburgh and played football for the Panthers in the 1980s before concentrating his efforts on his track & field career. He set the world record of 12.92
seconds in the 110-meter hurdles in Zurich, Switzerland in 1989. Kingdom retired from active competition in 1998 and in 2005, Kingdom was inducted in to the USA Track & Field (USATF) Hall of Fame. Last year, Kingdom was an inaugural inductee into the USATF Georgia Hall of Fame. While an Olympic hurdler, he was a two-time state champion in the 120 hurdles, high jump and discus and twice was selected Outstanding Track & Field Athlete in Georgia.

In 2011, Cal U qualified 153 entries to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships. Brice Myers became a five-time All-American, posting a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles and finishing second by one one-hundredth of a second in the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. Myers also repeated as the PSAC Champion in both events. Junior Alex Smith qualified for the
NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800-meter run after breaking his own school record in the preliminaries at the PSAC Championships. Senior Matt Kroetch became the fourth different runner in school history to win the PSAC title in the 10,000 meters and reached an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark. Junior Jordan Boatwright also reached an NCAA provisional mark in the triple jump, posting the second-best distance in the PSAC during the year. On the women’s side, sophomore Katurrah Hayman-Alston and Amber Saunders reached provisional marks in the 400-meter hurdles and high jump, respectively.
All six standouts earned all-region accolades from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), while junior Tim Lahmers and sophomore Erin Kling earned Capital One academic all-district laurels. Freshman Monique Sims set a total of five school records and posted a combined six top-three finishes at the PSAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships en route to earning PSAC Freshman of the Year honors for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners.
While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-
Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II,
seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000
alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16
member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

The Cal U track & field teams were started in the early 1970s by longtime head coach Marty Uher with the help of Phil Coleman, who ran in the 1960 Olympics. The Vulcans competed as member of the NAIA and AIAW for nearly a decade. Bill Birch, high jump, and Dean Shaw, cross country, were two of the first athletes in school history to qualify and participate in the NAIA Championships. In the first few years after Cal U made the transition to competing at the NCAA level within the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), the program featured some of the best talent in the country. Arguably the most decorated athlete in school history, Brian Ferrari was a two-time NCAA National Champion in 1983 and 1984. As a freshman in 1981, he captured PSAC titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Ferrari repeated as the league champion in the 10,000 meters the next two seasons before winning both distance events again as a senior in 1984. His PSAC-record time in the 10,000 meters stood for 25 years until it was broken in 2009 by Cal U standout Christopher Clark. At the same time Ferrari was excelling in distance events, the women’s track & field team featured some of the top athletes in school history. The Vulcans boasted four individual PSAC champions from 1982-85. Jenise Lockhart, a three-time PSAC champion, was the 1985 NCAA National Champion in the high jump and still holds the school record in the event. Scott Harrison won the long jump in 1986 after winning the high jump and setting the school record in the previous season. In 1994, the Vulcans featured their first All-American in a decade when Don “Skip” Bakewell garnered laurels in the javelin. The PSAC began sponsoring a winter championship for indoor track & field in 2002 with the Vulcans making their first appearance at the event the following year. In 2004, Cal U hired one of the most prominent names in U.S. track & field history as an assistant coach, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Roger Kingdom. The following year, Kingdom was hired as head coach and the Vulcans enjoyed instant success. The men’s track & field team placed eighth at the PSAC Outdoor Championships, equaling its best finish since 1987. Cal U also boasted its first PSAC champion in 20-plus years with freshman Brad Rager capturing individual titles in the 200 and 400 meters at both the PSAC Indoor and Outdoor
Championships. For his efforts, Rager was selected the PSAC Track Athlete of the Year during the indoor c a m p a i g n and PSAC Freshman of the Year during the outdoor season. In 2006, Cal U served as host of the PSAC Outdoor
Championships for the first time in the history of the program and finished eighth in the team standings. Running at Adamson Stadium, Rager repeated as the PSAC Champion in the 200 and 400 meters after winning the title in the 400 meters during the indoor season. Cal U boasted its first All-American in over a decade in 2007 with Christopher Clark earning the honors in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Clark also posted runner-up finishes in the 5,000 meters at both the indoor and outdoor PSAC Championships. Rager captured his third-consecutive title in the 400 meters during the 2007 PSAC Indoor Championships, while freshman Joanna Nist became the first women’s athlete to garner All-PSAC honors during the indoor season after finishing third in the long jump. The programs made a large jump forward in 2008, as the women’s team placed eighth at both PSAC Championships and the men’s team finished a program-best fourth during the indoor season. The Vulcans won their first-ever relay during the indoor season in the 4x400, Rager repeated as champion in the 400 meters for the fourth-straight year, Clark won the title in the 5,000 meters and Holly Urban captured the win in the 800 meters to become the first women’s champion in any event since 1985. The outdoor season featured two more titles for Rager, who also ran on the winning 4x100 relay, while Danielle Malay won the 400 hurdles. Clark garnered All-America honors in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters as a senior in 2009 and was selected the PSAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the league title in the 5,000 meters. Cal U also featured a NCAA Indoor All-American in Brice Myers, who was named the PSAC Indoor
Track Athlete of the Year. Myers continued to develop into one of the top hurdlers in the country in 2010, posting All-America finishes during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He also captured PSAC titles in both the 60 and 110 hurdles. At both PSAC Championships, the women’s team finished sixth in the team standings to mark the program’s best finish in 25 years. Cal U claimed its first win in a women’s relay since 1985 when the 4x400 relay won the event at the outdoor championships. Senior Clare McSweeney, who was a member of the relay, won the 800 meters and earned All-America honors during the spring. Last season, Myers repeated as the PSAC Champion in both the 60 and 110 hurdles and finished second at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 110 hurdles by just one one-hundredth of a second. Senior Matt Kroetch became the fourth different runner in school history to win the 10,000 meters and newcomer Monique Sims was selected the PSAC Freshman of the Year during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. With the size of the track & field program continuing to grow each year, the Vulcans are set to build on their recent success at the PSAC and NCAA Championships.

2011 REVIEWABOUT CAL U
29
On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852.
He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning.
In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for
Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.
Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan track and field. I am confident that Coach Roger Kingdom, his staff and the student-athletes will continue to build upon the track & field tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second place- finish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2010-11 academic year, a total of 225 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 245 student-athletes earned the honor during the Fall 2010 semester. For the 10th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park. Track & Field and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2012 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
