Cross CoUntry reviewThe 2011 Cross Country campaign saw the Huskies reach unprec-edented heights while still leaving the squad wanting more in the years to come.

The Huskies had a strong start to their season at the Blue Devil Invitational at CCSU, claiming the first 7 overall spots and 9 of the top 10.

The Huskies then finished 9th at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota, besting nationally ranked teams BYU and NC State. This result propelled the Huskies to a 6th place rank-ing in the Northeast Region and earned them votes in the national coaches poll.

At the Penn State National Invitational, the Huskies were again led by Lauren Sara (3rd, 20:55). Lindsay Crevoiserat (10th, 21:40), Shauna McNiff (15th, 21:52), and Heather Wilson (18th, 22:01) each earned top-20 finishes. The Huskies earned a second place team fin-ish ahead of nationally ranked squads in host Penn State (20th) and Duke (26th). Following this result, the Huskies earned a national ranking of 28th, the first national ranking in program history.

The BIG EAST championships in Louisville, KY played host to the most competitive women’s cross country meet in the nation, with the 28th-ranked Huskies entering as one of seven nationally ranked squads. Sara (8th, 20:16) earned all-BIG EAST honors, while Crevoiserat (35th, 21:17) was the 6th freshman across the line. As a team, the Huskies matched their result from a year ago with a 7th place finish in a meet that saw Villanova defend their title and eventual national champions Georgetown finishing third.

The NCAA Northeast Regional meet in Buffalo, NY saw the Hus-kies improve six places from a year ago to grab 7th place as a team. Sara’s (6th, 20:54) finish earned her a spot at the NCAA Champion-ships in Terre Haute, IN, while Crevoiserat (22nd, 21:26) also earned All-Region honors. Sara took 53rd at the NCAA Championships, her first finish outside of a top-10 all season, capping a sensational sophomore season that saw her finish as the Huskies top runner in each of her races. Sara was only the fourth runner in Husky history to make it to the NCAA Championships.

The Huskies will lose just one scorer from this year’s squad, Heath-er Wilson, as they look to build on their success in 2012.

Distance/Middle Distance

Senior two-time All-American Heather Wilson will lead the 2012 Huskies distance squad. Wilson, the 800m BIG EAST Champion a year ago, fin-ished fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championships, run-ning a school-record 2:05.17. Wilson also anchored the distance medley relay team that qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in another school-record time of 10:59.98.

Junior All-American Brigitte Mania, an NCAA Champi-onship qualifier during the outdoor season and a scorer at the BIG EAST Champion-ships indoors and outdoors, will join Wilson to lead the mid-distance group for the

Huskies. Mania also ran on the school-record distance medley relay and ran 2:05.84 for 800m outdoors.

Senior Meghan Cunningham qualified for the NCAA Champion-ships in the 3000mST, running a 10:11.57 to qualify. Cunningham also captured the BIG EAST title in the 3000mST, and recorded a per-sonal best of 4:22.42 in the 1500m.

Sophomore Lauren Sara, an NCAA Qualifier and school-record holder at 10,000m (33:51.21) will look to build on a stellar freshman campaign that saw her compete at the NCAA Championships as the lone freshman in the 10,000m.

Junior Shauna McNiff will look to score team points at the BIG EAST Championships this year, finishing 9th in the 3000m a year ago. Mc-Niff also ran a personal best of 16:40.26 for 5000m to qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championships.

Freshman Lindsay Crevoiserat enters UConn as one of the most decorated girls high school runners in the country. Crevoiserat holds personal bests of 4:46 for one mile, 9:40 for 3000m, and 16:50 for 5000m. After earning All-Region honors in cross country, Crevoiserat will look to contribute to the Huskies on the track.

The Huskies distance squad will also be relied upon to provide team points in the distance medley relay during the indoor season, as well as the 4x800m relay indoors and outdoors. Sophomore Allison Las-nicki and junior Allison Cooper, a BIG EAST qualifier at 1500m, will look to improve and add depth to the Huskies distance core.

Sprints and Hurdles

With the graduation of All-American Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, the most decorated athlete in UConn track history, Coach Terrelonge and the Huskies will look to a talented group of young sprinters. Leading the way will be Celina Emerson (Newark, DE), who was an All-American on the record setting Indoor Distance Medley and will look to elevate her teammates to the national level.

Short Sprints

With the graduation of 16-time BIG EAST Champion Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, the Huskies will turn to a young and relatively inexpe-rienced group in the short sprints. Danielle Lyte (Burlington, ON), 2009 BIG EAST and ECAC finalist, will provide veteran leadership and championship experience, while looking to earn All-BIG EAST honors. Junior Kewanna Donaldson (Enfield, CT), a BIG EAST quali-fier, will also provide veteran leadership for the short sprints group. Madalayne Smith (Saratoga, Springs, NY), Chantal Scott (Raleigh, N.C.), and Shavon Briscoe (Brandywine, MD) will compete in the 100m and 400m hurdles, the most technical event of the short sprints. Smith, a two-time BIG EAST finalist, will look to be at the top of the conference while making progress towards the national level in 2012. Scott will look to join Smith at the top of the BIG EAST.

Long SprintsEmerson returns not only as an All-American, but was also the New England Indoor Champion at 400m, and recorded the 3rd-fastest 400m time among BIG EAST athletes. Emerson will look to capital-ize on her early success and lead a deep group of long sprinters to the next level. Junior Ana Groff (Orlando, FL), an ECAC Champion, Big East Runner-Up, and New England Record Holder in the 500m, turns her focus towards the top of the BIG EAST podium, as well as the challenge of the 800m. The 4x400m relay team that set a program record while taking 2nd at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships a year ago. Tiffany Daley (Northborough, Mass.), who ran the anchor leg on the record-setting 4x400m relay team, finished second behind Emerson in the 400m at the New England Indoor Championships. Daley will look for podium finishes at the BIG EAST and ECAC

tion to fulfill her potential as a nationally elite competitor. At the indoor New England Championships a year ago, Flowers shattered the meet records in both the shot put and weight throw with performances of 53’ 5” and 68’ 9” respectively. This spring, Flowers will take aim at titles in the shot put and ham-mer throw at the conference, regional, and national levels.

Joining Flowers will be freshman Megan Chapman, a Con-necticut state and New England champion in the discus, and freshman Kodi Udeh, a Connecticut class champion in the shot put.

In the javelin, BIG EAST and ECAC qualifier Danika Ham will look to improve in her final season with the Huskies, while aiming for a trip to the NCAA East Regional Championships.

Horizontal Jumps

A year ago, junior long jumpers Kristen Brown and Whitney Holder scored points for the Huskies at each of the teams ma-jor championship meets. Brown won the long jump at both ECAC and New England Indoor Championships, while Hold-er finished in the top-3 at both competitions. Brown will take a redshirt year in 2012, and the Huskies will look to Holder to continue to progress. As a top-3 finisher in Big East competi-tion, Holder’s consistency and confidence should allow her to break through during 2012. Holder will aim to challenge the indoor school record of 20’ 6 ¼” (6.25m) held by Husky great Cheryl Brantle, a 1992 All-American, and the outdoor record of 21’ 2 ¼” (6.46m) held by Carol Galloway – the program’s first All-American in 1985.

Junior captain Brittany Power, will provide added depth in both the long and triple jumps. Power’s pre-season progress continues to point towards the goal of scoring at the BIG EAST, New England, and ECAC Championships.

Championships in 2012. Briscoe is the team’s long hurdle specialist who will look to improve her individual performance while continu-ing to provide valuable depth on relays. Two newcomers with im-pressive high school resumes should have immediate impact for the Huskies this year. Nyanka Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y) comes to UConn from one of the nations top prep sprint programs at Medgar Evers College Preparatory, and will look to make an immediate impact at the BIG EAST level. Connecticut high school star Brianna Allen (Windsor, CT) will provide depth to an already strong long sprint group in her first year in Storrs. on tHe field...Success in the women’s track and field program has been predi-cated on outstanding performances in event areas across the board. From sprints and hurdles, to middle and long distance, athletes have turned in top performances on both the regional and national levels. Anchoring those performances has long been the tradition of field event athletes, an area of long-standing excellence for the program.

Vertical Jumps

There have been 13 All-America honors in the high jump at UConn. This group is anchored by five-time All-American Deirdre Mullen, a USA Pan American Team member; Tamika Toppin, 4-time All-Amer-ican; and recent graduate and three-time All-American Carin Knight. In 2012, another trio of high jumpers will look to join this particular sorority. The 2012 group will be led by junior Ilva Bikanova, an out-door All-American and ECAC champion. Junior classmate Jasmine Cribb, a former Penn Relay College Division champion and record holder clearing 5’ 11 ¼”, and sophomore Natasha McLaren will be the most recent Huskies to follow in the proud tradition of UConn high jumping.

In the pole vault, junior Angelica Gilsenan has shown great improve-ment and will look to qualify for post-season meets.

Throws

The Huskies will turn to 3-time All-American Victoria Flowers to lead the throws in 2012. Following the graduation of NCAA qualifier and BIG EAST, ECAC, and New England champion Tynisha McMillian, Flowers will be on her own to lead the Huskies. Flowers will, how-ever, redshirt the 2012 indoor season in preparation for a run at this year’s Olympic Trials, but will retain a full year of NCAA eligibility for the 2012-13 school year. Flowers, a runner-up at the 2010 Indoor NCAA Championships in the weight throw, earned All-American honors last year, throwing 72’ 11 ½” in the weight throw, is in posi-

Country and track and field team

Bill Morgan is in his 31st year of coaching at the University of Connecti-cut and is in his eighth season as head coach of the UConn women’s cross country/track and field programs, after serving as an assistant coach for 22 years and as interim head coach in 2003-04. Morgan has been a part of all 41 track and field championships at UConn. He specializes in coaching field events and multi-events, for which he has gained a national reputation for excellence after guiding numerous UConn athletes to collegiate, national and Olympic Trials successes. His total of 200 conference champions includes the programs two NCAA Regional Champions, 41 ECAC, 83 New England, 55 BIG EAST titles and 36 All-American titles. Morgan’s programs have earned numerous team titles, highlighted by the recent outdoor ECAC Cham-pionship three-peat from 2008 to 2010, and four-straight indoor ECAC titles from 2007-2011 (UConn did not enter the 2009 competition). The team has earned BIG EAST Championship titles in 1986, 1995 and 2008. The Huskies have been the BIG EAST Championship runner-up a total of 10 times, five in indoor and five in outdoor competition. The past five seasons have garnered the most recognition and accom-plishments in program history, as Morgan led the Huskies to numerous team records and championships. The program has consistently out-paced itself, year after year over the past few seasons. The 2010-11 season was another successful season as Morgan led the team to its fourth consecutive ECAC Indoor Championship en route to completing the year with eight All-Americans. Under Morgan, who was named the Northeast Region Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year for the fifth-straight year, the Huskies broke 19 school records, set a new team record with 11 NCAA East Qualifiers and nine NCAA Fi-nals Qualifiers, and captured both the ECAC Championship and New England Indoor titles. Morgan coached Victoria Flowers to her third All-American title in the weight throw and the title of Northeast Region Athlete of the Year. Additionally, Morgan guided Ilva Bikanova to her first All-American in the outdoor high jump for UConn’s 13th overall high jump All-American nod. The Huskies had their highest ranking of the season at No. 18 as they concluded the indoor campaign ranked No. 22 in the nation. In 2009-10 Morgan led the squad to its third-straight ECAC outdoor and indoor titles. UConn dominated the New England Indoor Champi-onships for the fifth-straight year (29th overall) and the squad placed second at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. The program cel-ebrated eight individual BIG EAST Titles and 10 individual ECAC Ti-tles. In honor of the incredible season, Morgan was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year for the fourth-straight season after leading sophomore Victoria Flowers and junior Trisha-Ann Hawthorne to All-America status in the weight throw and the 100m dash, respectively. Hawthorne, coached by Clive Terrelonge, had a seventh-place finish in the outdoor 100m at the NCAA Championships garnering UConn’s first-ever NCAA Outdoor All-American. Morgan and his staff guided seven student-athletes to NCAA Qualifying marks. Coach Morgan also helped lead Hawthorne to a silver-medal finish in the 4x100m relay with Jamaica at the 2010 NACAC U-23 Championships. In 2008-09, UConn recorded its second consecutive BIG EAST Indoor title as well as the ECAC Outdoor Championship crown and its 28th New England Indoor title. In combination with an outdoor BIG EAST Runner-Up trophy, the team recorded another superlative season. Rec-

ognized with a No. 13 indoor National ranking and its seventh place showing at the NCAA East Regional, the program placed an exclama-tion point to its year. Within the team context, Morgan coached Carin Knight to two more All-American titles adding to her remarkable ca-reer along with freshman Victoria Flowers, who earned her first All-American title as the top freshman in the country. In addition, eight athletes were named to the All-East Regional Team for finishing in the top five at the East Regional. Morgan was honored as the NCAA In-door and Outdoor Coach of the year In 2007-08, UConn recorded three consecutive team titles, winning the BIG EAST, ECAC and New England Indoor Championships in a two week period. The BIG EAST title was the team’s first ever indoor crown after registering four runner-up trophies as a program. Morgan’s charges then captured the New England title as he was honored as the New England Indoor Coach of the Year along with freshman phenom, Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, who won the Athlete of the Meet honors. Morgan’s team continued its surge and was spectacular in winning the ECAC Indoor crown to defend their title from the previous season, becoming only the ninth program to win in the 30-year meet history. Morgan was further acknowledged by being named the year’s NCAA Division I Northeast Region Women’s Coach of the Year. Morgan led former triple jumper, Tamara Highsmith, and high jump-er, Carin Knight, to national level performances as Highsmith beat Mi-ami’s Tabia Charles’ record at the BIG EAST Championship with a jump of 44’ 1.25”, dominated the ECAC competition and concluded with a seventh place finish at the national championship to become an All-American. Knight joined her with BIG EAST and New England titles while earning the All-American status with a sixth place finish in the high jump. UConn followed the indoor season with their first ECAC Outdoor title, displaying the magnitude of such a dominating year. With nine athletes continuing to the NCAA Regionals, four made the All-Region-al Team and went on to the national championship where Highsmith mirrored her indoor performance with another All-American title. The team was not finished as Knight, Highsmith and alumni Deirdre

Mullen (five-time All-American), Bethany Hart (two-time All-Amer-ican) and current volunteer coach, April Garner, participated in the teams’ fifth consecutive Olympic Trials. Mullen climaxed a stellar sea-son by finishing fourth (6-3.25) and positioning herself for the 2012 Tri-als. The brilliant season was capped with members making their re-spective national teams as Highsmith made the USA Under-23 team and Hawthorne made the Jamaica Junior National team, while Phylicia George made the Under-23 Canadian team. In 2007, Morgan’s program produced its first NCAA Regional Cham-pion in freshman high jumper Carin Knight along with four BIG EAST Champions. His team placed fourth at the BIG EAST Championships, their best outdoor finish in 12 years. The program produced 11 NCAA Regional qualifiers along with two ECAC Athletes of the Week in Amanda Martin and Jillian Sullivan. Again, Morgan’s team made histo-ry, marking seven new program records in their outdoor performances. Jillian Sullivan became UConn’s first ever All-American for the wom-en’s cross country, as she picked up Academic All-American status as well. Both cross country and track and field earned All Academic teams honors after both the 2007 and 2008 seasons. During his tenure at Connecticut, Morgan has coached athletes to 27 All-American titles, the most recent being Knight and Flowers in 2009 and Flowers and Hawthorne in 2010. Morgan also coached Tamara Highsmith, Deirdre Mullen, Nicole Toney and Tamika Toppin to the All American status. He coached Toppin in the high jump (1998 and 1999), Bethany Hart (1999 and 2000) and Wendy Berutto (1997) in the hammer throw, long jumpers Carol Galloway (1985) and Cheryl Brantle (1992), Terry Roy in 1992, 1993 and 1995, and high jumper Ronna Deffer, an NCAA National Outdoor Championship finalist in 1992. In July of 2000, he accompanied Hart and Toppin to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento where Hart was the top collegian in the competi-tion. The two were his fourth and fifth student-athletes to qualify for the trials. He also coached Roy, Brantle and Berutto to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta in June of 1996, Roy to the 1992 trials in New Orleans and Mullen to the trials in Sacramento, Calif. in 2004.

Coach Morgan with three-time All-American (Weight Throw) Victoria Flowers.

In 2004, Mullen became his second national team member as she earned a bronze medal at the NACAC Under-23 Championship in Sherbrooke, Canada. One of Morgan’s former athletes, three time All-American Terry Roy, also became the Junior National Cham-pion in the heptathlon and participated in the World Junior Cham-pionship in Korea. Morgan continued the team’s progress toward national recogni-tion as he coached Mullen to a conference record-breaking perfor-mance in the high jump. Mullen cleared 1.83m (6’) to capture first in the high jump and set a BIG EAST Championship record while following that performance with a 1.88 (6-2.00) jump at the regional championship. As impressive has been alumnus Hart who became UConn’s first Winter Olympian during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy – 3 months after competing on our USA World Team as the country’s second ranked hammer thrower in Helsinki, Finland. As interim head coach in 2003-2004, Morgan’s cross country team placed 4th of 41 teams at the New England Championship for its best finish in nine years. His indoor squad captured the New Eng-land Championship while placing sixth out of 44 teams at the ECAC Championships. Morgan coached Garner to the New England and ECAC Championship in the hurdles as the season concluded with six individual conference champions, two school records and an All-American. Morgan has taken part in the USA Track and Field Women’s Ju-nior Elite Throws Camp in San Diego as well as the USA Track and Field Women’s Elite Heptathlon Summit in Tucson, Arizona. He has also written published articles on topics related to imagery in sport. In 2002, Morgan was acknowledged as an AFLAC National Assis-tant Coach of the Year for distinguished service at the University of Connecticut. Morgan has been a part of many memorable program highlights since taking the helm of the women’s track and field program – none more significant than his team’s status as an All-Academic Team. Continuing the decorated academic success at Connecticut, the 2009 cross country team was named a USTFCCCA All-Academ-ic Team for the seventh year in a row. The track team was also hon-ored in 2010 as an All-Academic Team. Phylicia George (’10) and Sara Leslie (’10) were both honored as BIG EAST Scholar Athlete’s of the Year. Morgan presently resides in Coventry. He retired after 30 years of public school teaching; 29 of those in the Columbia School Dis-trict as a physical education instructor. Morgan was an undefeated track and field coach at Porter for five years, going 51-0 in dual meets. Among the many age-group athletes he has coached, Mor-gan developed three national champions in the shot put, discus and pentathlon. Morgan received his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1972 and his master’s degree from SCSU in the same field of study in 1973. In 1986, he received an advanced degree in sport biomechanics from UConn.

four of his athletes to qualify for the Outdoor NCAAs in their individual events. At the Re-gional meet with Terrelonge coaching five of the ten total athletes representing UConn, the program recorded its best finish in school history. Earlier that season, the Huskies won their second consecutive ECAC Championship title. Hawthorne was named ECAC Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet, while just two weeks earlier she had been dubbed BIG EAST Outdoor Championship Track Performer of the Meet. At the historic Penn Relays, the 4x200 team recorded a season-best time which eventu-ally earned them a ninth-place national ranking. The 4x100 team also met success as they became the first in program history to make the “Championship of America” final. During the indoor campaign, UConn defended its title as BIG EAST Champions as Haw-thorne won both the 60m and 200m, while Graves-Fulgham broke her own school record to claim the 400m title. In the process, both gained a berth to the NCAAs. With two champions in three events, and four athletes in the finals of the 60m dash, Terrelonge’s sprinters amassed over 50-percent of the team’s total BIG EAST points. Terrelonge and the Huskies had an outstanding year in 2008. En route to the Huskies’ first ECAC Outdoor Championship title, his sprints led the way, accounting for nearly half the Huskies’ points. At the conclusion of the season, four new school records were set. The 2008 indoor season proved to be historic as UConn pulled off the “triple crown” in the champion-ship season, winning the New England, BIG EAST and ECAC Championship titles. It was the team’s first ever BIG EAST Indoor title, their second consecutive ECAC crown and their third-straight New England Championship. At the conclusion of that season, the program was recognized by the USTFCCA with Northeast Head Coach, Assistant Coach and Field Athlete of the Year honors in Bill Morgan, Clive Terrelonge, and Tamara Highsmith, respectively. Terrelonge and the Huskies performed well during the outdoor campaign in 2007, where five of the Husky sprinters competed in the NCAA Regionals. The 2006-07 squad captured two titles during the indoor season; the ECAC and the New England Championship titles. The Huskies were third at the BIG EAST Championship, which was the highest finish in school history before the UConn victory in 2008. In recognition of his achievements, Terre-longe was named one of the United States Emerging Elite Coaches and was selected to par-ticipate in the United States Track and Field (USATF) Elite Men’s and Women’s event camps, which were held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. July 14-19, 2007. In 2006, Terrelonge coached fourteen athletes to New England Championship titles, and ten athletes to All-BIG EAST status. He finished the season with four athletes competing at the USA Jr. Championship most notably Graves-Fulgham who finished as a finalist in the 400m. During Terrelonge’s first year with UConn, he wasted no time in making an impact. In 2005, he led current volunteer coach, April Garner, to new and presently unbroken school records in the high hurdle events. That year she was the BIG EAST runner up in the 60 hurdles and 100 hurdles, following her ECAC indoor hurdle title from the previous year. She continues to train and compete on an international level under the leadership of Terrelonge. He coached her to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, 2006 and 2007 US Indoor National Championship, 60 hurdle finals, as well as multiple international competitions. Prior to coming to UConn, Terrelonge worked at Brown University and his alma mater, Lin-coln University in Pennsylvania. While at Brown, he helped guide the team to a second place finish in the Ivy League in 2004. Over the two years he served at Brown, his sprinters broke two school records that stood for over ten years in the 100, and the 110 hurdles. In 2004, Brown had its first women’s Ivy League 100m champion over six years. At Lin-coln, Terrelonge helped lead the women’s squad to a NCAA Division III Championship and produced eight All-American sprinters/hurdlers that year. During his time as an assistant coach, the men captured six NCAA indoor and outdoor titles and two runner-up trophies. The men’s sprinters also set five NCAA records and earned over sixty All-America honors. As a collegiate competing for Lincoln University, Terrelonge earned 19 Division III All-America honors in the 400m, 800m and 4x400 relay. He is a former NCAA two-time 400m champion, three-time 800m champion and still holds the 800m NCAA Division III outdoor record. He was also a World Champion and two-time Olympian for Jamaica. Terrelonge was inducted into the NCAA Division III Track and Field Hall of Fame at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship in Waverly, Iowa on Wednesday, May 25, 2005. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Lincoln in 1994. Terrelonge currently resides in Storrs, Conn.

Clive Terrelonge enters his eighth year with the University of Connecticut Huskies, and his third as Associate Head Coach. Coach Terrelonge has been recognized three years in a row for his effort in creating one of the dominate programs in the region. Terrelonge has been named USTFCCA Northeast Outdoor Assistant Coach of the Year for three straight seasons and the Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009. He has completed seven successful years as the Huskies’ sprints/hurdles coach, leading his athletes to BIG EAST and ECAC Championship titles, as well as NCAA Regional and National Championship appearances. During his short tenure, he has coached his athletes to new school records in seventeen events. The Huskies were also named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for their excellence in the classroom. Terrelonge has been at the forefront of developing 2011 graduate Trisha-Ann Hawthorne into the most decorated sprinter in the history of UConn track and field. Hawthorne has dominated the sprint events in the BIG EAST, winning an unprecedented 4 straight out-door titles in the 100m and 200m. She also owns the BIG EAST record for 3 straight indoor victories in the 60m and 200m, tallying an impressive 17 individual titles. She is also the first track athlete to earn NCAA Outdoor All-American honors as she placed seventh in the 100m at the NCAA Championships. As a freshman in 2008, Hawthorne represented Jamaica in the 200m at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championship in Bydgoszcz, Poland. She earned a silver medal with Jamaica in the 4x100 at the NACAC U-23 National Cham-pionships in 2010. Terrelonge also helped guide 2010 graduates Phylicia George and Mandela Grave-Ful-gham to success both regionally and nationally. George competed at the 2009 Canadian World Championship Trials, and the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials in the 100 hurdles and 200m. In 2009, she qualified for the NCAA National Championships as a part of the 4x100 relay team. During the indoor season, George set a personal best in the 60 hurdles placing her name on the record books by tying the school record. Off the track, George has received NCAA Academic All-America, and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team honors. She was also honored with the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Award and at the NCAA Championship, she finished tied for 10th in the 60m hurdles with a new school record. Graves-Fulgham was one of the most consistent performers for UConn over her four years. Her accolades include multiple BIG EAST, ECAC, and New England titles in her specialty, the 400m. She claimed three BIG EAST Indoor titles in the 400m from 2007-2009. Graves-Fulgham competed at the NCAA Championship in both the indoor and outdoor 400m as she holds the program record in both seasons. The UConn sprinters have been extraordinary since Terrelonge’s addition to the program. Since 2005, the title of BIG EAST Champion in the 60m and 100m has been in the sole possession of UConn sprinters Jessi Foreman and Hawthorne.

In 2010, Terrelonge was honored as the in-door and outdoor Northeast Region Coach of the Year. The Huskies claimed both the indoor and outdoor ECAC Champion-ships as well as the New England Cham-pionships. UConn also placed third in the BIG EAST Indoors while finishing second at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Hawthorne claimed seven titles overall, including four BIG EAST Championships. Hawthorne continued her success finish-ing as an NCAA Outdoor All-American in the 100m. She was crowned Athlete of the Meet at both ECAC Championships as well as the BIG EAST Outdoor Cham-pionships. The Huskies saw three sprint-ers qualify for the NCAA Championships. Hawthorne joined Graves-Fulgham, George and freshman Kristen Brown to compile the NCAA Qualifying 4x100m

relay team. In total, UConn saw nine sprinting records broken on the season. During the 2009 season, Terrelonge led

Andrea Grove-McDonough begins her fourth year as assistant women’s track & field and concluded her first year as the Head Coach of cross country after working with the team for three seasons. Responsible for cross country and the middle distance/distance events on the track, Grove-McDonough has rapidly improved the cross country program and distance corps at Connecticut. In 2011, the cross country team was nationally ranked for the first time in pro-gram history.

Grove-McDonough has also helped to continue the high standards of aca-demic success at UConn. The 2009 and 2010 cross country team was honored as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team as 15 student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for achieving cumulative grade point averages above 3.0.

2010 graduate Sara Leslie was honored with the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. The award is given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or perfor-mances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.

After making great strides in the 2009-10/2010-11 cross country seasons, Grove-McDonough led the Huskies to several program milestones in the 2011-12 campaign. The Huskies were nationally ranked (No. 28) for the first time in program history and sophomore Lauren Sara became only the fourth UConn runner to advance to the NCAA Championships as an individual. Sara had a stellar year as the top finisher in every Husky race she competed in, including taking home the 53rd overall seat at the Championships. The Huskies greatly improved at the Penn State Invitational where they captured a second place finish coming ahead of nationally ranked teams, a common occurrence in the 2011 season.

Under Grove-McDonough’s guidance, the distance runners have continued to set new school records and earn All-America status. In 2010-11, the Huskies broke the 800m, 1,000m, 1,500m, 5,000m, 3,000m Steeplechase, 10,000m and the 4x800m school records. Heather Wilson and Brigitte Mania were named Indoor

Before beginning her coaching career at UConn, Grove-McDonough enjoyed a highly successful professional career in which she won two National Titles and competed internationally in every event from the 800m to the 10,000m. In 2008 Grove-McDonough won the Canadian Olympic Trials in the 10,000m and posted the seventh fastest time in Canadian history in the event. During her twelve years as a professional athlete, Grove-McDonough was a seven time National Team Member, a finalist in the 1,500m at the 1999 World University Games in Palma de Mallorca, Spain and was selected to represent Canada at the 2008 Chiba Ekiden relay in Japan. She also finished ninth at the 2007 Canadian World Cross Country Trials.

Grove-McDonough has garnered an impressive record of six top-three finishes at the Canadian National Championships. She was ranked second in Canada in the 5,000m in 2002, 2006 and 2007 as well as being the No. 1-ranked 10,000m runner in 2008. She holds personal bests of 2:07.12 for 800m, 4:11.04 for 1,500m, 15:31.29 for 5,000m and 32:29.86 in the 10,000m.

Grove-McDonough was also a standout performer throughout her col-legiate career at the University of Minnesota, culminating with a fifth place finish in the 1,500m at the 1996 NCAA Outdoor Championships, where she earned All-American status. She also represented the University of Minnesota in the mile at the 1995 Indoor NCAA Championships. Grove-McDonough was a captain for the Gophers from 1994-1996 and an All-Big Ten Academic Selection. She holds a degree from the University of Minnesota in Human Resource Management.

Grove-McDonough returned to the collegiate scene in 2007 when she helped coach the men’s and women’s cross country squads at the University of Montana. She began coaching and managing elite-level athletes in the mid-dle and long distance events beginning in 2006, including coaching an athlete that represented Canada at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships in Ireland.

A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Grove-McDonough lived in Missoula, Montana for twelve years and now resides in Mansfield, Conn. with her husband, former All-American decathlete, Troy McDonough.

She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as a former UConn athlete, and has been an integral part of the recent success of the Connecticut program. She works intimately with the sprint and hurdle group and was a key factor in elevating the 4x100 and 4x200 teams to national prominence in 2009. In 2010, Garner helped with the development of four-time NCAA Qualifier and sprint/hurdlers Phylicia George, Mandela Graves-Fulgham and Trisha-Ann Hawthorne. As a collegiate competing for Connecticut, Garner compiled a long list of accolades, including four individual New England Championship titles, an ECAC championship title, and NCAA regional and national standards. She reigns as the school record holder in the 55 hurdles, 60 hurdles, and 100 hurdles. Garner also excelled academi-cally, being named to the dean’s list eight times, and receiving NCAA All-Academic honors in 2005. Victoria Flowers also earned region-wide recognition as she was named Northeast Region Field Athlete of the Year. Trisha-Ann Hawthorne collected wins in the 60m and 200m dashes at the BIG EAST Championships for the third-straight year. Hawthorne set a meet record in the 60m dash (7.26s) and was named the meet’s MVP. During the indoor campaign, the Huskies set 8 school records. Haw-thorne’s 7.26 clocking at the BIG EAST meet established a new school record in the 60m dash. Heather Wilson set school records at 800m (2:05.18), 1000m (2:46.97), and one mile (4:46.38). Freshman Lauren Sara set school records at both 3000m (9:32.28) and 5000m (16:35.02). In the weight throw, Flowers recorded a throw of 22.24m to break her own school record set in 2010. The Huskies also took down the school record in the distance medley relay running 10:59.99. In addition to these school records, the Huskies also recorded 19 top-5 all-time performances across 11 events. At the BIG EAST Championships, the Huskies finished second as a team, with Trisha-Ann Hawthorne (60m, 200m) and Wilson each claiming individual titles. At the New England Championships, the Huskies claimed a team title and won ten individual or relay events, setting meet records in four of these. Flowers threw a meet record of 20.94m in the weight throw, and 16.28m in the shot put. In the 500m, Ana Groff ran 1:13.35, and the 4x400m relay team of Groff, Tiffany Daley, Coleen Hepburn, and Celina Emerson ran 3:43.21. Heather Wilson’s 4:46.36 clocking in winning the mile established a new school record. The ECAC Championships again saw the Huskies take the team title, while five Huskies earned individual titles. Flowers was again a double winner, claiming both the shot put and weight throw crowns. Ana Groff (500m), Kristen Brown (long jump), and Trisha-Ann Haw-thorne (200m) also claimed individual titles. Sara also ran a school record time of 9:32.28 while taking third in the 3000m. The Huskies sent six athletes to the NCAA Championships. Flowers took 4th in the weight throw with a school-record throw of 22.24m. Wilson took 4th in the 800m, running a school record of 2:05.18. Hawthorne bowed out of the 60m competition in the preliminary round, but her 16th place finish was enough to earn her second team All-America status. The distance medley relay team of Wilson, Mania, Andrianos, and Emerson took 12th.

outdoor The 2011 outdoor season again saw the Huskies again set numer-ous school records, though they endured some disappointing team results. The Huskies took third at the BIG EAST Championships, and finished 2nd behind Duke at the ECAC Championships. Coach Bill Morgan, however, again earned region-wide recognition, as he was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year, an award he also earned during the indoor season. As they had done during the indoor season, the Huskies continued to rewrite the school record books, establishing 11 top marks. Trisha-Ann Hawthorne capped her remarkable career by matching her own school record in the 100m running 11.31, and establishing a new school record in the 200m at 23.22. Hawthorne also captured the BIG EAST title at both 100m and 200m for the fourth year in a row, mak-ing her the first athlete in conference history to win four consecutive titles in two different events. In addition to Hawthorne’s two titles, Meghan Cunningham also took home a BIG EAST title in winning the 3000m steeplechase. Cunning-ham followed her BIG EAST victory by running a school-record time of 10:11.57 at the NCAA East Regional, qualifying her for the NCAA Championships. Cunningham capped her season with a 19th place finish at NCAAs.Brigitte Mania, Leah Andrianos, and Lauren Sara joined Cunningham

2010 Cross CountryThe 2010 UConn Cross Country season was a major step forward for the program. In a sign of good things to come, the underclassmen led the way in seven of 10 races this season.

The signs of a strong season began with a victory at the Army Invite in the first meet of the year and a second-place showing at the BIG EAST Preview in Syracuse, N.Y. The Huskies placed second overall, besting na-tional powerhouse West Virginia in the process. Sophomore Shauna Mc-Niff led the way, placing fourth overall. The very young team made some noise early in the championship season with a second-place finish at the New England Championships, the highest finish ever by a UConn squad. Freshman Allison Lasnicki finished first for UConn, placing 14th overall.

The team followed with another historical finish at the BIG EAST Cham-pionships. The BIG EAST Conference proved once again it was the top conference in the nation as the league placed four teams (No. 1 Villanova, No. 4 Georgetown, No. 9 Providence, No. 10 Syracuse) in the top-10 at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Running in the most dominant conference in the country, the Huskies placed seventh to set the top mark in the his-tory of UConn Cross Country. The team was led by one of the hottest freshman in the conference, Lauren Sara, who finished among the top-five freshmen in the BIG EAST. Hot on her heels were two underclassmen, sophomore Shauna McNiff and fresh-man Allison Lasnicki. The top-five runners for UConn were consistently over five minutes faster as a group than the team from 2009. The Northeast Regionals saw similar results as Lauren Sara ran the top mark for UConn, finishing 41st overall and as one of the top-six freshmen in the Northeast Region. All of UConn’s top seven ran personal bests at the NCAA Northeast Regionals (Lauren Sara 21:19, Shuana McNiff 21:33, Leah Andrianos 21:49, Heather Wilson 21:57, Kimberly Moran 22:04, Al-lison Lasnicki 22:13, and Courtney Dinnan 22:15).

2010-11 track & field The 2011 season was an historic one for the UConn women’s track and field team. While the Huskies excelled in competition, they were most importantly recognized as a Division I All-Academic for maintaining a team GPA over 3.0. And this academic success laid the groundwork for a year that saw 19 school records fall. In 2011, the Huskies sent 11 athletes to the NCAA Championships and earned 8 All-American awards. At the indoor NCAA Champion-ships, Victoria Flowers (Weight Throw), Trisha-Ann Hawthorne (60m dash), and Heather Wilson (800m) earned individual All-American honors. Wilson, along with Mania, Andrianos, and Emerson earned All-American status as members of the distance medley relay. At the outdoor NCAA Championships, Ilva Bikanova earned All-American honors in the high jump, while Meghan Cunningham (3000m ST), Brigitte Mania (800m), and Lauren Sara (10,000m) earned NCAA Honorable Mention status. As a team, the Huskies collected indoor titles at the New England Championships and the ECAC Championships. The New England title was the Huskies sixth straight, while their ECAC Champion-ships marked the programs second consecutive, and fourth title in the past five seasons. At the indoor BIG EAST meet, the Huskies fin-ished 2nd, a mere 1.5 points behind Louisville, though they collected three individual titles. Outdoors, the Huskies failed to claim a team championship, finishing 3rd at the BIG EAST Championships and 2nd at the ECAC Championships. The runner-up finish at the ECAC Championships snapped a streak of three straight outdoor ECAC titles. At the BIG EAST meet, the Huskies claimed three individual titles and extended their streak of top-4 team finishes at BIG EAST Championships to ten consecutive meets.

indoor Following victories at both the New England and ECAC Champion-ships, Head Coach Bill Morgan was named Northeast Region Coach

The Huskies also established school records in the 4x400m, and 4x800m relays. The team of Emerson, Groff, Daley, and Imani Sudlow ran their record time of 3:40.84 while tak-ing 2nd at the BIG EAST Championships. The 4x800m team of Andrianos, Mania, Cunningham, and Wilson recorded a time of 8:33.94 to take 5th at the Penn Relays. In addition to establish-ing 11 new records, the Huskies also recorded 12 top-5 all-time performances across nine events during the season. At the ECAC Championships, freshman Ilva Bikanova took home the high jump title, clearing 1.81m to set a personal best. Bikanova went on to qualify for the NCAA Championships, where she finished 14th, earning second team All-American honors. Bikanova’s clear of 1.81m placed her 5th on UConn’s all-time list.

in the ClassroomTheUniversityofConnecticutwomen’strackandfieldandcross country teams have been a success not only in compe-tition, but in the classroom as well. The cross country team has been named an NCAA Division I All-Academic team for the past six years, while the track team has earned that dis-tinction for the past five. Themain criteria for the awardis that the cumulative grade point average for all student-athletes for indoor and/or outdoor track and cross country must be 3.00 or higher. In 2010, Phylicia George and Sara Leslie were named BIG EAST Scholar-Ahlete Sport Excel-lence Award winners. The awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic cre-dentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. The Huskies had 31 team mem-bers acknowledged on the BIG EAST All-Academic team for achieving a 3.0 or higher for the 2010-11 academic year. In 2008, George was one of 10 individuals chosen for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. In 2007 former UConn distance standout, Jillian Sullivan, earned Third Team Academic All-America honors by ESPN The Magazine as announced by the College Sports Infor-mation Directors of American (CoSIDA). The program attributes its success to its work ethic and support staff. The team devised a plan to help enhance academicperformanceandpromoteteamunitythroughorganizedlearninggroups.Theplanisflexible,low-impactand positive. All historical feedback from programs like this have indicated it is successful at achieving the objective set forth. Also helping to achieve the team’s objective are its support staff, including now retired John Miceli of the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes. The Huskies welcome a new support staff with Lindsay Darcy who hastakenoverthewomen’strackandfieldprogram.CPIAisaunitwithintheDivisionofAcademicAffairswiththeprimary goal of assisting student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in intercollegiate athletics.Asacademicaffairsofficers,CPIAcounselorsfunctionasliaisonsbetweentheathleticandacademiccommunities. Counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students’ successful transition into college life by instituting academic and social support programs, includ-ing, but not limited to, Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial and Life Skills Programs.

in the Community

The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fieldsandcourts.Communityserviceisanintegralpartofthe UConn experience, as Husky student-athletes contribute count-less hours each year to a number of worthy causes. The women’s track team has also started a charitable initiative on the team since the 2009-10 season, “Team Hand-Off”. Each month, student-athletes from the program can give a presentation totheircoachesandteammatesforaspecificcharitythathasaf-fected their lives. Each month, the staff and program donate $50 to a pair of charities chosen by the student-athletes. Some orga-nizations that have been chosen include, Chituka Village Project,

Windham Area Interfaith Ministry, Sail to Prevail, Samaritan Purse, Teen Challenge and Malawi Desk Program. Thewomen’strackandfield/crosscountryteamshavebeenactiveinseveralcom-munity service activities, including working a drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross that raised a total of $30,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The team has also been individually recognized for its efforts as Leah Williams, a 2006 graduate and former UConn volunteeer coach, was chosen to represent UConn

at the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference. Each school is permitted to send one representative to the event. Williams now works with HuskySport at UConn, working with student-athletes in the local Hartford communities. The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The leadership conference also promotes better communication amongstudent-athletes,coaches,administrators,facultyandcommunities.Thefive-dayconferenceconsistsofdailyexercisesand activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group. The conference is an outreach of the NCAA’s highly-successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. Criteria for selection include the student-athletes’ demonstrated ability and strong desire to be a leader and the student-athletes’potentialtobenefitsignificantlyfromaleadershipdevelopmentexperience.Inordertobeeligiblefortheconference,the student-athletes must be in good academic standing, and must have athletic eligibility remaining for the following academic year.

UConn student-athletes and SAAC held a toy drive in December 2011- Women’s track and field members

Jasmine Cribb (SAAC Secretary) and Ilva Bikanova (team rep) participated.

Senior Heather Wilson, junior Ilva Bikanova and red-shirt senior Meghan Cunningham were named to the

2011 USTFCCCA All-Academic team.
