Buxton is a native of Blowing Rock, N.C., where he has proven to be a vital element to non-profit organizations in Appalachia. Through the 1980s he served as Executive Director of the sixteen-member Appalachian Consortium, in which he worked with faculty on research projects, scholarly conferences and publications related to Appalachia. books; including “A Village Tapestry: The History of Blowing Rock”, which was recognized in 1989 as the best local history book in North Carolina.

Through his 35-year career, Dr. Buxton has been a teacher, researcher,

publisher, editor and a community leader with extensive international experience. Buxton is a past member of the North Carolina Humanities Council and the Nebraska Humanities Council. Dr. Buxton is married to artist Deborah Keyes Buxton, and they have

two sons: Loren, a technology executive in Nebraska, and Peter, whom lives in New York City working in television and commercial production. Dr. Buxton’s vocational interests include tennis, bicycling and landscape architecture.

Craig McPhail is in his third year as Director of Athletics at Lees-McRae College, where he oversees all day-to-day operations of the Lees-McRae athletic department and the 17 sports the college sponsors.

In his first year, the athletic teams showed great success as the

men’s soccer program competed for the national championship, while men’s tennis, men’s track and field, men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s volleyball reached the NCAA Division II tournaments.

The Bobcats’ success on the field resembled their classroom success,

as 159 student-athletes made the Presidential Honor Roll for athletics, the second-most in Conference Carolinas.

Noticeable improvements were reached during his first year, as

the department received a full-time NCAA Director of Compliance and added banners documenting the department’s NCAA success in the gymnasium. Updated upholstery of the weight room’s equipment; complete with signage and banners, window decals, painting of the front entryway and asphalt seal coating were also new additions.

Newly renovated softball facilities, outdoor tennis complex and

press box, along with the re-introduction of the Hall of Fame and establishment of a Bobcat Club have all been accomplished during his short time at the helm.

McPhail previously worked on community service projects, managed awards banquets, handled publicity and marketing of the athletic department and monitored the overall experience of the student-athletes as Lees-McRae’s assistant athletic director. He has been involved with several College committees for graduation, judicial review, community service and retention.

He has represented the College as a member of CoSIDA, United

States Cross Country/ Track Coaches Association, USA Track and Field, Conference Carolinas chair for both cross country and track and field, and was recently a chair of the NCAA Division II Cross Country/Track and Field committee.

As the men’s and women’s cross country coach for 11 years, his

teams show greatness in and out of the classroom. With 13 conference championships in men’s and women’s cross country, and track and field; a program whose re-instatement of which McPhail was an essential part. He has coached 73 all-conference student-athletes, 31 gaining all-region honors, and has watched them regularly receive Academic All-America honors over the past decade.

McPhail has guided 38 Lees-McRae student-athletes to NCAA

Division II National Championships. In doing so, he has been Conference Coach of the Year 11 times, acquiring Regional Coach of the Year three times.

A member of several organizations, McPhail serves the community well for the local Young Life Organization, the Banner Elk Christian Fellowship Church and the Special Olympics Torch Run. He also is the organizer for the Woolly Worm Road Race and the Turkey Trot, while coordinating Lees-McRae Mountain Day and caddying at Diamond Creek Golf Club.

He earned his degree in mass communications (journalism) from

Winthrop University, with a minor in interpersonal speech. His master’s degree in sport management is from Georgia Southern University.

McPhail is married to former Jill Clawson; as they are proud parents

of one-year old son Elijah Boggs McPhail.

Sebastian Wild enters his fifth year as the women’s basketball head coach at Lees-McRae College. The native of Rostock, Germany was the Bobcats’ assistant coach from 2004-2006 before taking over as head coach in June 2006.

In his first two seasons, coach Wild led the program to an 18-38 record with 15 wins coming in conference play. This also included an upset win at No. 25 Anderson University, which snapped the Lady Trojans 27-game home winning streak. Wild continued with his success by leading the Bobcats to their first postseason win in seven years, upsetting Limestone by two.

Wild has mentored a trio of all-conference performers at LMC, including 2006-2007 all-Conference Carolinas First team selection Dianca Jones. Stephanie Mullinax earned a spot on the second team in 2007-2008, while Lauren Casey garnered second-

team recognition in 2009-2010.Coach Wild has been coaching for 14 years, eight coming as a head coach in his native Germany, where he is considered one of the top developmental teachers

of the game. Wild has won numerous state championships on the youth level, prior to his appointment as head coach of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern All-Star team in 2000. Wild led his home state to its best record, taking eighth place at the annual national tournament.

Wild joined a semi-professional club program in 2001, in which his coaching strategies and experience spoke loudly as the squad finished 22-0 his first year. The following years the team became one of the top programs in the region, as Wild compiled a 48-18 record in three short seasons, while continuing to establish himself as one of the top coaches in the country. Wild is still very actively involved with the game in his home country, running multiple clinics and camps every summer.

Tasha Taylor is in her second year as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Lees-McRae College. Taylor joined the Bobcats prior to the 2009-10 season after a record-breaking career at NCAA Division I Clemson University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sport management.

After three successful seasons at Clemson and being voted team’s Best Defensive Player Award in 2006-2007, Taylor suffered an injury, which forced her to redshirt the 2007-2008 season. The Columbus, Ga. native bounced back with a tremendous 2008-2009 season, forcing her way into the Clemson record books and ending her tenure at Clemson ranked in the top five for career assists (433) and assists per game (3.7).

2011-2012 BoBCat WoMen’s BasketBaLL season prevIew

The Lees-McRae women’s basketball team begins the 2011-2012 season with high hopes, welcoming a talented recruiting class into the fold as the Bobcats look to build on their Conference Carolinas Quarterfinal appearance last spring. Head coach Sebastian Wild enters his fifth season at the helm, hoping to improve on last season’s success in league play.

The Bobcats return 10 letter-winners from last year’s squad, including seniors Amber Coleman (Alexandria, Va.), Chloe Parker (Chicago, Ill.), and Sophie Witte (Hamburg, Germany). Coupled with a strong recruiting class and a talented group of veterans, the Bobcats are poised to make significant strides toward the top half of the conference.

Guards

Coleman returns for her senior season to provide a veteran presence in the backcourt, coming off a campaign in which she posted 50 points and 30 rebounds in limited minutes. The Alexandria, Va. native will be called up to fill valuable minutes for the Bobcats this season.

Icey Patterson (Seneca, S.C.) is back for her junior campaign as the anchor of the Bobcat rotation, coming off a strong season in which she averaged 8.9 points, 3.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game at point guard. The 5-4 guard will be expected to shoulder significant minutes as LMC’s floor general and starting point guard this season.

Junior Candace Flowers (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomores Kasey Haynes (Mooresville, N.C.) and Megan Tate (High Point, N.C.) return to provide valuable minutes for the Bobcats, while competing for a spot in the starting five. Flowers appeared in 25 games last season, averaging five points and knocking down 20 three-pointers.

Haynes enjoyed a solid freshman season with the Bobcats, averaging 5.7 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while converting 75 percent of her free throw attempts. Tate’s rookie campaign at LMC was cut to just eight games by injury, as the High Point, N.C. native showed great promise by averaging nine points and 2.6 rebounds per contest in that span.

Junior transfer Juliane Faltus (Berlin, Germany) rounds out the backcourt corps for the Bobcats, joining the Green and Gold from Dawson Community College in Glendive, Mount., where she was named MVP in 2010.

Wings

Junior Zukye Smith (Chesterfield, Va.) and sophomores Paige Whitaker (Harrisburg, N.C.) and Natalija Cakarevic (Belgrade, Serbia) return to anchor the wings for the Bobcats. Smith averaged four points and four rebounds as a sophomore last season, appearing in 25 games while posting a 40 percent clip from the floor.

Whitaker saw limited action in her rookie campaign with the Bobcats, averaging 2.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in less than nine minutes per game off the bench. The sophomore is expected to compete for minutes and a spot in the starting five this season. Cakarevic appeared in 22 games as a freshman, averaging two points and 1.8 rebounds per contest off the bench; she is expected to compete for valuable minutes in the rotation this season.

Freshman DeAnna Waters joins the Bobcats from Dr. Henry A. Wise High School in her hometown of Upper Marlboro, Md., where she averaged 13.5 points and four blocks per game to earn team MVP honors as a senior. The 5-9 wing is expected to compete for a spot in the rotation this season.

Forwards

Parker and Witte return for their final campaigns with the Bobcats to anchor the front line, having combined for 13.4 points and 11.7 rebounds per game last season. Parker put together a strong junior campaign in 2010-2011, averaging 6.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while posting a field goal percentage of 51.9 percent. The Chicago, Ill. native is expected to anchor one of the two frontcourt spots in the starting five for the Bobcats.

Witte enjoyed a strong junior season with the Green and Gold, averaging 7.1 points and six rebounds per game while leading the team with 13 blocked shots. The Hamburg, Germany native posted a 48.6 percent clip from the floor last season, while making 10 starts. She is expected to start alongside Parker in the frontcourt this season.

Freshman Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) joins the Bobcats from Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., where she was a two-time all-district performer and team MVP. The 5-9 forward is expected to compete for valuable minutes in the rotation for the Bobcats this season.

Outlook

With a balanced roster of veteran leadership and youthful talent, the Bobcats look poised to make great strides in their quest to rejoin the ranks of the elite in Conference Carolinas. Lees-McRae will face some tough opposition this season, including perennial WVIAC contender Concord University, as well as NAIA powerhouse Milligan College.

Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athletics conference made up of 12 teams from North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. These institutions consist of: Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Coker College, Converse College, Erskine College, King College, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, Mount Olive College, North Greenville University, Pfeiffer University, and Queens University of Charlotte.

The league supports eighteen season-ending conference championship tournaments with nine women’s and nine men’s sports. Sports that are sponsored with NCAA automatic qualifications include: Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Golf, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Cross Country, and Women’s Volleyball. NCAA regional and national selection opportunities in Men’s Soccer, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Outdoor Track & Field, Women’s Outdoor Track & Field, Women’s Golf and Men’s Volleyball are also available based on end of year regional rankings and/or season results.

Conference Commissioner, Dr. Alan Patterson about the conference says, “Conference Carolinas is recognized regionally and nationally as a premier NCAA Division II conference which champions scholarship athletics working in concert with student athlete’s committed to academic success.”

History

Conference Carolinas has a rich tradition in roots that date back to its early initial inception on December 6th, 1930. The conference was formed then as an athletic association “for the greater advantage of the small colleges in North Carolina”. The official name given back then was the North State

Intercollegiate Conference but known informally as the Old North State Conference.

The birthplace was the Washington Duke Hotel in Durham, NC and the seven charter members were Appalachian, Atlantic Christian (now Barton College), Catawba, Guilford, Elon, High Point, and Lenoir-Rhyne.

The conference followed a policy of expansion for a period of time. Western Carolina became a member in 1933, East Carolina in 1947, Pfeiffer in 1960, Newberry in 1961, and Presbyterian in 1964, followed closely by Mars Hill.

With the acceptance of the first member from South Carolina in Newberry College, a name change became necessary. Thus on May 20, 1961 the official name of the conference was changed to the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) but commonly known less formerly as the Carolinas Conference.

East Carolina resigned in 1962 to join the Southern Conference and Appalachian and Western Carolina followed. Football sponsorship in the Carolinas Conference was dropped in 1973 when Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry, Presbyterian, and Mars Hill joined the South Atlantic Conference.

Pembroke State University became a first-time member in 1976 followed by Wingate College in 1979, and Lenoir-Rhyne rejoined in 1984.

While Guilford College withdrew in 1988, St. Andrews and Mount Olive were added that same year.

The 1989-90 academic year started a new era as Catawba, Elon, Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate all withdrew to compete in the first year that the South Atlantic Conference would provide championships in all sports, not just football.

The Carolinas Conference then added Belmont Abbey in 1989, Coker College in 1991, and Lees-McRae in 1993.

The 1993-94 academic year brought a change to the conference national affiliation. The conference entered dual membership into both the NAIA DI and NCAA DII affiliation.

The 1995-96 year brought dramatic change to the conference. First, full membership into NCAA Division II was acquired and NAIA affiliation dropped. Thus, this was the first official year of full competition and championship play for the conference in NCAA DII status. Secondly, this was also the same year that Erskine, Longwood, & Queens were accepted as full members of the conference. With Longwood becoming the first Virginia member, another name change occurred and the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (known more universally as the ‘CVAC’) was born.

Following the 1997 academic year High Point resigned to join the NCAA DI ranks while in 1998 Limestone soon joined and were quickly followed by Anderson in 1999.

In 2003, Longwood University left the conference to explore possibilities in NCAA Division I. Then in 2005 the CVAC added Converse College as an affiliate member before becoming a full member starting in the 2007-08 season.

With the lone Virginia school in Longwood leaving, the league decided to go back to their roots and change their name to Conference Carolinas in 2007.

On June 1st 2011, King College and North Greenville University became official members of the conference and opened the conference to its first Tennessee member in King. With both schools joining, the league now has 13 full member institutions and currently still remains one of the elite NCAA DII conferences in the nation.

Many institutions have been members of the league during its rich history including Anderson, Appalachian, Atlantic Christian (now Barton College), Belmont Abbey, Catawba, Coker, Converse, East Carolina, Erskine, Guilford, Elon, High Point, King, Lees-McRae, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, Longwood, Mars Hill, Mount Olive, Newberry, North Greenville, Pembroke State, Pfeiffer, Presbyterian, Queens, St. Andrews, Western Carolina and Wingate.

Barton is the only remaining charter member followed in longevity by Pfeiffer’s membership in 1960 and then Mount Olive’s and St. Andrews both joining in 1988.

Mission

A Presbyterian-affiliated institution founded in 1900 to serve the educational needs of the Southern Appalachian region, Lees-McRae College continues to provide a quality, values-based edu-cation in an ecumenical environment, inspiring and enabling in-dividuals to contribute to a changing society with integrity and civic responsibility. Through a curriculum rooted in a liberal arts core and emphasizing leadership and service, graduates obtain knowledge, skills, and a holistic understanding of themselves and the world.

College History

“Banner’s Elk,” as the village was once called, is said to have been settled around 1850. By the end of the century, the Presbyterian Church was becoming established in the area and in the summer of 1895 Concord Presbytery sent a young student from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia to organize a church at Banner Elk. In 1897, newly ordained, the Reverend Edgar Tufts returned as pastor of the church and remained to serve the community until his death in 1923.

In the winter of 1899, concerned with the limited offering of the district school which was supplemented only by summer school work conducted by the church, Mr. Tufts took some of the young people of the neighborhood into his study for further instruction. This small group, called the Class of 1900, marks the beginning of Lees-McRae College.

Mr. Tufts saw, however, that this effort was not enough and that there was a need for a boarding school, especially for the girls of the mountain region. A small amount of money was raised at a prayer meeting and the promise of lumber and labor made possible the opening in 1900 of a frame dormitory for fourteen girls and one teacher. One of the summer school teachers was Elizabeth A. McRae, originally of South Carolina, who had been sent to Banner Elk by Fayetteville Presbytery. Knowing the devoted character of her work, Mr. Tufts, named the institute for her. A few years later, after a boys' department had been opened at Plumtree, he added the name of Mrs. McRae’s friend, Mrs. S.P. Lees of Kentucky and New York, who had been a generous benefactor. The schools were chartered by the state in 1907 as the Lees-McRae Institute. In 1927 Lees-McRae became coeducational when the boys unit was moved to Banner Elk after the buildings at Plumtree had been destroyed by fire.

Lees-McRae Institute became Lees-McRae College in 1931, gradually eliminating the high school department to form an accredited, coeducational junior college. In 1987 the Board of Trustees of Lees-McRae College voted to seek senior college status. In June of 1990 the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted Lees-McRae status as a senior (four-year) college.

Over a hundred years after its founding, Lees-McRae Col-lege continues in the vision of the Rev. Tufts meeting the educational needs of the Southern Appalachian region and beyond. The college continues to fulfill its motto, in the mountains, of the mountains, and for the mountains while extending its ministry of education and service to diverse populations.

Today, Lees-McRae is a small, private, four-year, coeduca-tional liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. with over 900 students from more than 20 states and countries. Lees-McRae offers 22 outcomes-based, learner-focused major programs of study and sev-eral minor programs of study, providing a quality, values-based education in an ecumenical environment, inspiring

and enabling individuals to contribute to a changing society with integrity and civic responsibility. Through a curriculum rooted in a liberal arts core to educate the mind, body and spirit, combined with an emphasis on leadership and service, graduates obtain knowledge, skills, and a holistic understanding of themselves and the world.
