A Message from the PresidentDear Alumnae/i and Friends,
Welcome to Bryn Mawr’s 125th Anniversary Scholarship Gala.
We have gathered here tonight for many reasons: to honor our past, to look toward our future, and to enjoy the company of those who have been part of our Bryn Mawr journey. But one reason above all others brings us together tonight: to celebrate and to support the students of Bryn Mawr.
Every day at Bryn Mawr, I meet extraordinary young women: aspiring physicians who not only want to care for patients but also want to unlock the secrets of new cures; creative artists hoping to make their mark in music, drama, or fiction; and promising young scholars preparing for advanced study in fields ranging from archaeology to philosophy. What unites them, despite their diverse academic interests, is undying intellectual curiosity, and a passion for social change, whether in this country or around the globe.
Bryn Mawr attracts young women of great talent and merit from many different backgrounds. They make this a vibrant and diverse community. Our ability to enroll these students depends in large measure on the generosity of alumnae/i and friends like you. Nearly two-thirds of Bryn Mawr students depend upon scholarships and financial aid, and the demand grows every year.
For this reason, we are honoring our 125th anniversary by seeking to raise a minimum of $1.25 million in new scholarship funds. Your participation in tonight’s event is helping us to reach this goal. On behalf of the College and all its students, I thank you for celebrating our 125th anniversary by investing in the futures of our Bryn Mawr students.
With all best wishes,
Jane McAuliffe President
A Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees
Dear Gala Guests and Supporters,
Since 1885, promising young women have walked through Bryn Mawr’s archways to begin their studies. Four years later, they graduate and go on to make meaningful contributions in fields ranging from education to business, from biomedical research to community development. This year, we celebrate that 125-year tradition of extraordinary achievement.
We also celebrate the tradition of alumnae/i, parents, and friends who have made a Bryn Mawr education possible for thousands of students. Following the example set by our founder and first benefactor, Joseph Taylor, each generation has generously supported those that have followed. Tonight, we proudly continue that tradition in an elegant fashion.
On behalf of the College’s Board of Trustees, I thank you for your commitment to sustaining our students in this and future generations. Your generous gifts ensure access to the finest liberal arts education for the talented young women who will carry forward the Bryn Mawr tradition of achievement we celebrate tonight.
With gratitude,
Sally Hoover Zeckhauser ’64 Chair, Board of Trustees
A Message from the Self Government Association President
Dear Bryn Mawr Alumnae/i and Friends,
If I were to describe the Bryn Mawr experience in one word, it would be “empowering.” The opportunities and resources Bryn Mawr offers its students empower us to reach for our dreams.
Every day, I am inspired and motivated by my peers, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i to succeed. The Bryn Mawr community challenges all students to take risks and discover new interests and goals. I am thankful to be a student at a college with a legacy of devotion to women’s education, grateful to be part of a supporting community, and proud to be Bryn Mawr.
I was excited to hear that alumnae/i and friends of the College are celebrating the history of Bryn Mawr and showing their support for current students by contributing to scholarships. Thank you so much. As a student who benefits from scholarships, I experience the difference it makes and know how meaningful each supporter is. You make the Bryn Mawr experience possible.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Yong Jung Cho ’12 Self Government Association President

theater group• Hometown: Skillman, NJ
“ Without donors like you, Bryn Mawr would have been an impossible dream. With your help I was able to afford this incredible education within an incredible community, even while my father fought a battle with multiple myeloma.
“ Bryn Mawr has changed me for the better. It has made me a more compassionate and understanding person, while still sparking my skills of critical analysis. I don’t believe there is another institution that can so successfully instill all of these qualities in its students.”
Pamela Burt ’12• Sociology Major, concentration in Environmental Studies• Semester abroad in Milan, Italy• Alumnae Regional Scholar• Owl Investment Club• Hometown: Asuncion, Paraguay
“ Nothing can ever describe the importance of a college education—the doors it opens and the change in vision it brings upon students. I am happy to say that Bryn Mawr College has changed mine. I am now a world leader, confident in following my dreams and proud of my past, present, and future endeavors.”
All proceeds of the 125th Anniversary Scholarship Benefit will support scholarships for Bryn Mawr students. A few of our students
explain how scholarships have made a difference for them:
Why ScholarShipS Matter
Lesley Shipley• Ph.D. Candidate, History of Art• Mrs. Giles Whiting Fellowship in the Humanities• Graduate Student Mentor, Hanna Holborn Gray Undergraduate
Research Fellowship Program • Hometown: Bryn Mawr, PA
“ The Whiting Fellowship gave me the opportunity to focus entirely on research and writing my dissertation during my final year at BMC, and allowed me to complete the Ph.D. in a timely manner. I am incredibly grateful for the generosity and support of the Whiting Fellowship, as well as the assistantships and fellowships I received from BMC.”
Kristi Baker-West• MSS Candidate, Clinical Social Work• Patricia L. Chapman MSS ’81 Scholarship • Student Mentor, Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research
(GSSWSR) Mentoring Program• Hometown: Lansdowne, PA
“ Without your assistance, pursuing a master’s as a full-time or even part-time student would have been impossible. This assistance has given me the help I needed to manage my finances for school and the finances of mothering three college-age daughters.
“ After graduation, I plan to work with veterans and their families in one of the local VA hospitals. GSSWSR is preparing me for the VA or any other career I may pursue.”
