The. volleyball. team’s.most. recent. project. was. to. assist. with.a.Special.Olympics.Softball. Skills.Evaluation. event. in.Bryan,.Ohio...Team.members.led.the.softball.skills.testing.session.of.25.Special.Olympic.athletes...They.helped.by.encouraging.the.athletes.as.they.were.tested.in.batting,.throwing,.and.base.run-ning.skills...The.team.also.assisted.with.handing.out.awards.at.the.end.of.the.event.

Many.student-athletes.at.DC.have. taken.active. roles. in. lead-ership.and.service. initiatives.campus-wide..Such.experiences.give.Defiance.College. students. a. greater. awareness.of. a. di-verse.world.and.its.needs.as.well.as.the.leadership.skills.to.cre-ate.positive.change...Volleyball.team.members.Lindsay.McDan-iel,.Caroline.Hesterman,.Chelsea. The 2011 campaign will be the ninth for David Kwan at the helm of the Defiance College volleyball program. During his tenure with the Yellow Jackets, Kwan has piled up a career record of 136-114 and has guided Defiance to a 38-26 mark in league play.

Kwan has coached 21 All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference student-athletes during his stint with DC, en route to piling up four 20-win seasons. Kwan was named the 2003 HCAC Coach of the Year, after leading the Jackets to a school-record 26 victories during his first season with the program.

The Jackets finished the 2010 season with a 14-17 record including a 3-6 mark in league action. The program featured two All-HCAC performers, Marlea Rolander and HCAC Freshman of the Year, Chelsea Ludeman. Ludeman was the second Yellow Jacket in three years to be honored with the distinction.

The team enjoyed success off the court, as four Yellow Jackets were named to the All-HCAC Academic Team. The volleyball squad earned the highest spring grade-point-average of all Defiance sports with a combined 3.64 GPA. The list included 10 boasting grade-point averages of at least 3.70 and four with a perfect 4.00. It was the highest team total in Kwan’s tenure as coach.

Kwan came to Defiance from Toronto, Ontario, where he served as assistant men’s volleyball coach at Humber College. During the 2002-2003 season, Kwan helped lead the Hawks to the school’s first undefeated regular season and a top-four finish in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Championship.

Prior to Humber College, Kwan was an assistant women’s volleyball coach at York University, where he also instructed physical education courses and helped develop some of the top volleyball athletes in the province of Ontario, placing four athletes on the All-Canadian All-Stars.

Kwan began his coaching career by volunteering as the head coach of the boys’ volleyball team of Toronto West Volleyball Club from 1997-2002 and as head coach of the Elite Summer Regional Team of Ontario from 1998-2001, earning bronze in 2000 and gold in 2001. He was also a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach at the Sports Clubs of Canada-Plaza Club.

Kwan has also coached both the 15 and 16-year-old national travel teams for Premier Volleyball for the last five years, having recently qualified the 16-1 team for the Junior Olympics National Tournament in Atlanta. He has worked camps for the University of Michigan, Bowling Green State University, Premier Elite and numerous local high schools in and around the region.

Kwan earned an honors bachelor of arts degree in kinesiology and health sciences from York University in 1999 and a master of kinesiology in coaching degree from York in 2001.

Michael Morici enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Defiance volleyball team. He comes to Defi-ance with a wealth of playing and coaching experience.

As a standout player at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Morici, a libero, ranked top 20 nationally in digs per game in 2005 and top 10 during the 2006 season.

As a coach, Morici has spent time at various levels of the game. He served as a graduate assistant for the IPFW men’s team from 2009 to 2010. Morici has also coached at the Rolling Thunder Volleyball Club in Lake Zurich,

Illinois from 2004-2011, where he was head coach for the 17’s team that traveled to the Junior Olympic Tournament. Additionally, Morici has coached at the Purdue Summer Volleyball Camps in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Morici graduated from IPFW in 2008 with a bachelor of arts degree in media and public communication. He has been trained as a certified volleyball official in Illinois.

Ludeman. enters. her. second.season.after.a.stellar.freshman.campaign..In.2010,.Ludeman,.a.right.side.hitter,.ranked.sixth.in. the.HCAC.with. 323. kills..A.threat. on. the. defensive. end.as. well,. she. posted. 86. total.blocks..Also.a.product.of.Napo-leon.High,.Ludeman.combined.with. Rolander. to. account. for.nearly. half. of. the. team’s. kills.and.blocks.

Tietje.returns.to.the.squad.after.an.injury-shortened.2010.sea-son..The.senior.middle.blocker.from. Patrick. Henry.
