NEW Medication Disposal Made Easy

Relatively few people are awareof the significance of prescriptiondrug and alcohol abuse amongolder adults. While those over 65years of age make up only 12%

of the current population, theyuse 1/3 of all prescription drugsand nearly 1/2 of medicationspurchased are over the counter.Prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drug abuse is a serious

concern in Boone County.

One way to prevent theimproper use of OTCmedications is to dispose of thedrugs in a secure location that isboth safe for people and theenvironment.Recently, theBoone County Jail

installed amedicationdisposal cabinet inthe jail entry.

The disposal is available sevendays per week and is open for

public use. The project wasmade possible thanks to the  joint efforts of the BooneCounty Sheriff’s Department, the Boone County HealthDepartment and the Boone

C o u n t y S o l i d W a s t eManagement District whichalso provided funding for thedisposal cabinet.

Thank you to Drug Free Boone County

for awarding BCSSI with a $2500 grant to support efforts to better educate Boone County seniors and their family members about

prescription and OTC drug abuse.

Sheriff Ken Campbell and  BCSSI Executive Director

Sue Ritz properly disposeof old medications.

I realized

several

years ago

that every

patientcommonly

asks about

two different

conditions--cataracts and macular

degeneration. In a two part series, I

will attempt to answer some

questions about these ocular health

issues that might cause problems

for some of you. First, the simple

definition of a cataract is a yellowing

of the lens inside of the eye. Many

times, eye care professionals refer

to the eye as a camera. Just like in

a camera, a normal eye has a lens

which is very clear that allows for

the eye to focus. When cataractsdevelop, the lens in the eye

becomes yellow and opaque, and

therefore vision seems hazy,

cloudy, and/or blurry. It may take a

few weeks to a few months or sometimes even a few years to

cause vision to become bothersome,

but regular eye exams can detect

the early formation of cataracts.

Once the cataract is affecting your

vision, your eye care professionalmay refer you to a surgeon to

remove the cataract. This is a rather

simple procedure where two small

incisions are made in the eye, the

cataract is removed, and then aclear implant is placed in the eye.

The eye heals quickly and will be

fully healed within a few weeks.

Sometimes blurry vision can also be

caused by other conditions, so

always call your eye care

professional with any slow or quick

changes to vision, or check for any

other problems. Check back in the

July/August issue of the Sr. Sounds

to learn more about wet and dry

macular degeneration!

ARE YOU A CAREGIVER IN NEED OF SUPPORT?By Jayne Brickey

Participant of the BCSSI Caregiver Support Group

A Caregiver may be a spouse, son, daughter, neighbor, closefriend or distant relative, youngor old, who generally gives uppersonal time and makessacrifices in their own lives toprovide emotional and physicalcare and support to an elderly or ill parent, spouse or friend.

During theyears Icared for my mother,I wore“manyhats”- wife,

mother, grandmother, sister andlast but not least, a full timeemployee, and I didn’t want to

admit to anyone that I might beexperiencing one or more of thesymptoms of “Caregiver Stress”.The Caregiver may experience:1) Denial; 2) Anger;3) Social Withdrawal; 4) Anxiety;5) Depression; 6) Exhaustion;7) Sleeplessness; 8) Irritability;

9) Lack of Concentration;10) Health problems.

When I realized I needed to try to

alleviate some of the stress in mylife so that I could continue tofunction and care for my mother, I:1) Set realistic goals andexpectations;2) Established limits;

3) Asked for/accepted help;4) Took care of myself;5) Involved other people, and6) Found a Caregiver Support

Group whose members were

also Caregivers experiencingsimilar issues.

Fortunately, I found the Caregiver Support Group sponsored byBoone County Senior Services,

Inc. that meets from 6:00-8:00p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month at their officelocated at 515 CrownPointeDrive, Lebanon.

Please consider this an openinvitation to join us as we travelthe “Caregiving Road” together.
