NATIONAL WATERCOLOR SOCIETY

Page 3: 2011 NWS Annual International Exhibition Catalog

Each year at the close of the Annual Exhibition, thirty paintings from the show form a Travel Exhibit. These paintings travel to various art museums or college galleries throughout the country providing opportunities for the pub-lic to enjoy and learn about watercolor. NWS Regional Representatives help with the Travel Exhibit. The NWS Member Exhibition takes place each spring. Both signature and associate mem-bers may enter this juried exhibition.

NWS is also an educating society. In conjunc-tion with the Annual Exhibition, NWS presents demonstrations by nationally known artists at the Education Center in San Pedro. Workshops are also presented. Each year the painting receiving the NWS Purchase Award is added to the NWS Permanent Collection. The early collection, 1925-1954,was donated to LACMA. When the vault at the building is completed, NWS hopes that LACMA will return the early collection to NWS. The National Watercolor Society has a rich history. Its archives are held in the Smithson-ian Institution Branch O!ce in the Huntington Library, San Marino, CA. They are an o!cial part of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art.

With an exciting vision and a new appreciation for an old art form, the California Water Color Society was founded in 1920. As the country grew, painters found inspiration in the expansive western lands and were, in their way, pioneers of a new spirit. The name of the society has changed twice: first in 1967, to California National Watercolor Society; then in 1975, when the members voted to become the National Watercolor Society. The first exhibition was held at the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art, which later became the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The first twenty-five annual exhibitions were held there. From 1946 through the early 1960s, they were often at the Pasadena Art Museum. In the 60's and 70's, the Annual was usually at the Laguna Beach Museum of Art. From the 80's up to 2000's, they alternated at the Brea Civic Cultural Center and the Muckenthaler Gallery in Fullerton.

In 1999, NWS purchased a building at 915 South Pacific Avenue, San Pedro, CA. This has become the society’s center for o!ces, gallery and an education center. The 2010 90th Anniversary Annual was held in the NWS Gallery.

Past Presidents President's Message

As I sit in witness of the jurying process here at NWS, I am in absolute AWE of the quality of the paintings in this show and of the matted works of those who have qualified for signature membership! We are honored to have received a number of paintings from other lands. While the clothes, language and buildings of the artists’ home countries might be di"erent, it is quite apparent that the spirit and pursuit of excellence are the same from culture to culture. What a terrific honor to exhibit these works and to show our high respect for the artists who were accepted. This year, our jury consisted of an extraordinary group of artists whose knowledge of art and breadth of understanding revealed choices that reflect a stunning and diverse exhibition. Their performance in the jurying process was so outstanding that our board was amazed at how quickly the show was selected. You might be interested to know about the process of selection and the fine example of integrity and honesty in the selection process. Three jurors sit in silence and electronically vote “yes” or “no” as each piece is projected onto a screen. A board member inputs the results in the computer while three o!cials witness and monitor the process. The votes are then double- and triple-checked. No person may speak or nudge or sign or gesture their reactions to any of the works. Moreover, no names are obvious or mentioned during the process to ensure that no cronyism takes place. It is my steadfast belief that our system lifts up and recognizes artistic achievement on the merit of the art alone. For this reason, my hat is o" to every artist who is included into this show. Speaking of honor, I must add that I am extremely proud to have been part of this august process and to serve as your president. Congratulations to each and every artist in this exhibition.

Sincerely, M. E. “Mike” Bailey, President

2011 National Watercolor Society Life Achievement Award – Gerald Brommer

"I believe emotional content is the life force in painting. Without it, painting is merely colored decoration."

Gerald Frederick Brommer was born in Berkeley, California on January 8, 1927.

Raised in Berkeley, he began drawing in elementary school and in high school

he quickly became known as the kid who did the yearbook illustrations and

designed the posters. Brommer enrolled at Concordia College and made the

move to Seward, Nebraska in 1944. In 1948 he returned to California with a

B.S. degree in education and a job o"er from an elementary school in the San

Fernando Valley. Jerry says, "I began teaching geography,

art and everything else in elementary school, and

enjoyed that incredibly energizing experience for

five years. Then I 'graduated' to high school, teaching

both geography and art at Lutheran High School in

Los Angeles. It was here, working in rooms full of eager

drawing and painting teenagers, that I felt the exhilara-

tion of the teaching/learning process." His work at

Lutheran High was defined by his excellence as a teacher

and the devotion of his students. As art department

chairman he expanded the department size and wrote

several curricula for teaching high school art. In 1961 Brommer completed a

mural for the school entryway. In 1976 he retired from Lutheran High and

began teaching national and international workshops the same year.

By 1960 Jerry had received his M.A. in geography from the University of

Nebraska and to broaden his art background enrolled in evening, Saturday and

summer classes at UCLA, USC, Otis Art Institute and Chouinard.

Originally an oil painter Brommer remembers the day he switched to

watercolor. "In the 1950's I went up to the Carmel area with a group to play golf.

One day it rained so hard that we couldn't play golf so we got in the car and

started driving around. In Carmel Valley there was a little gallery, and in the

window was a Donald Teague painting. I can still see that painting, it was that

impressive. It was the deck of a ship with guys working with ropes and stu"

going on all around. It was absolutely stupendous. I stood in the rain for 15

minutes looking at that painting and got absolutely drenched. I didn't even

notice it was still raining – I was so into that painting. I looked at that thing and

I said, 'That's what I want to do,' and I switched to watercolors. That painting

absolutely turned my life around. I think sometimes

that all you need is that one place in your life, that one

moment that changes your life."

Brommer began to exhibit locally and held his

first one man exhibition in 1957. That first exhibition

has evolved into a regimen that includes a minimum

of three solo and numerous group and invitational

exhibitions annually. To date that count is well over

560 exhibitions. He has painted on five continents and has a current output far

exceeding 6,000 artworks. Jerry gained signature membership in the California

Water Color Society (now NWS) in 1962 and quickly moved into the Society's

group of influential members. He became Treasurer in 1963, VP in 1965 and 1966,

and President in 1967 and 1981. His artwork has been

included in a massive 34 exhibitions and travel shows

and he holds memberships in Watercolor USA Honor

Society, National Art Education Association, National

Art Club, Philadelphia Watercolor Club, and the Rocky

Mountain National Watermedia Society.

He began writing in 1968 as an extension of his

teaching. With subjects as varied as wire sculpture,

drawing, painting, watercolor, collage, printmaking, art history, design, content,

movement and careers, Jerry has watched as his output has grown to cover

twenty-four titles.

Educator, author, and watermedia master Gerald

Brommer has been blessed with a life entwined with his

two greatest loves, that of his wife Georgia whom he met

while still a student at Concordia, and plein air painting.

"Once I get started painting on location I just revel in it –it's my favorite thing to do. Reacting to the environment is what really gets me excited and turned on to painting. I think painting on location is the greatest thing in the world."

Previous Jurors of Awards Juror of Awards – Harold Gregor

BiographyHarold Gregor gained national prominence in the early 1970's within the Photo-realistic movement, turning to the farm structures and sweeping horizon of the Midwest for inspiration. Along with realist landscape depictions, Gregoris also known for his unusual Flatscape paintings that combine an aerial perspective with unique color choices to suggest an essential Midwestern landscape. Currently Gregor, while continuing to paint his realistic farmscapes, is exploring a sense of imaginary, very colorful landscapes called Vibrascapes, and also a series of large semi-abstract forest views called Trailscapes. Gregor received his BS from Wayne State University, his MS from Michigan State University,

and his PhD from Ohio State University. He is Distinguished Professor, Emeritus, Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois. He is the recipient of a 1993-94 National Endowment for the Arts grant and a 1984 NEAA Midwest Fellowship. In 1993 he was awarded the Illinois Academy of Fine Arts Lifetime Achieve-ment award. He is a charter member of the Watercolor Honor Society (WHS) and has juried many watercolor shows and taught workshops throughout the country. Gregor's work is represented in important public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. The Richard Gray Gallery in Chicago, the A.C.A. Gallery in New York City, Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, and the Tory Folliard Gallery in Milwaukee represent him.

I wish to thank those who selected me to be the award juror for the National Watercolor Society annual exhibition. Being asked to do the job is indeed an honor. Mr. Mike Bailey was obliging to work with and was thoroughly organized. Also, I appreciated becoming acquainted with the many members of NWS who helped me while selecting awards. They are an exceptional group of artists, warm, friendly, and dedicated to watercolor as an artistic pursuit. On the whole, I consider the work submitted to be of aesthetic strength and worthy of attention. By singling out work for an award, I hope I have focused attention on the strongest e"orts and not withheld the spotlight from the deserving. In the main I ranked less high those displays of technical excellence that projected a too-usual content or lacked metaphorical extension. I gave greater applause to those works that seemed to evidence a grasp of pictorial space beyond realistic depiction. Clarity of premise was an important factor in my assessment as was an avoidance of the too-often chosen. A refreshing take on an old theme received high marks, as did a sense of daring. There were several artists who seemed to view excellence as a measure of how well their works compared to a known artist. They seemed in search of the "art look" instead of the individual statement. These I found to be of less interest and instead gave the accolades to those works that announced chanci-ness, going beyond a dependence upon displaying the "awesome agony of technical precision" as a primary virtue. All in all, I think the show is distinctive and of very high quality and the participants ought to feel pleased and proud of their acceptance. I hope they do.

Jury of Selection Awards, Donors, and Patrons

As your jurors of selection for the 2011 National Watercolor Society Exhibition, we were not only honored for having been chosen but enriched and inspired by the work represented in the

show. Additionally, we were astonished with the extraordinary outcome of this particular jury-ing process. Together we viewed nearly 1,000 paintings from across the United States and a number of other countries, representing some of the finest watercolors in the world. Our task - to select 100 pieces that exemplify the caliber of work expected of this prestigious organization. As always - a daunting undertaking. After individually contem-plating the expertise, composi-tion, technique, interpretation, freshness, and individuality of

Previous Juries of Selection

each of these fine works, we were rewarded upon completion of our initial round of judging with a perhaps unprecedented result: Having followed the required procedure of voting privately, without consultation or conver-sation throughout the duration, we had each voted for exactly 100 paintings that would become this year's exhibition. This surprising and unexpected outcome is evidence that we had selected from a decidedly strong body of work, and speaks to the universal appeal of the paintings chosen. Our compliments to all who submitted their work for this year's show - a testament to your confidence and commitment to your work, as well as to the National Watercolor Society. Our sincere congratulations to those whose work will make up this outstanding exhibition. Your paintings are both admirable and inspirational. Sincerely, Ted Nuttall, Chairperson

The basis for National Watercolor Society participation – Painting must be primarily water-based media on a paper surface and unvarnished. Pastel or collage, if used, must be in conjunction with the watermedia. The watermedia must be the dominant element.

The goals of the National Watercolor Society are to encourage interest and excellence in watermedia paint-ings by providing quality exhibitions and to act as an educational channel to pertinent information, exhibition opportunities, and beneficial programs to artists and the public. In addition, NWS sponsors programs and grants to children, and student art programs to encourage and assist education in the arts.

SIGNATURE MEMBERArtists desiring membership in the National Watercolor Society must submit an image for the next annual exhibition. Requests for prospectus should be sent to: Exhibition Director National Watercolor Society 915 South Pacific Avenue San Pedro, California 90731-3201

A non-member or NWS Associate whose painting is accepted for annual exhibition will be contacted by the president and will be invited to apply for membership by submitting three matted paintings (not including the exhibited work) that will be reviewed by the Jury of Selection. Artists whose work meets the qualifications of this jury will be invited to become Signature Members of the Society. A second path to membership is open to non-members or Associates who have been accepted into three Open Annual Exhibitions.

Signature Membership entitles the artist to:

and functions;

a lower fee than nonmembers;

NWS ASSOCIATESNWS has an active support group in its Associates. You may join by paying yearly dues, which entitles you to the same privileges as Signature Members with the exception of using the NWS initials after your name and voting. The Society is a not-for-profit organization; therefore, dues are tax deductible.
