Year-by-Year Results

Career Highlights

In his 14th season as the Director of Tennis at the University of Connecticut, Glenn Marshall enters his 19th season working with the tennis programs overall. He has served as the men’s tennis team head coach since the 1992 season and took the helm of both the men’s and women’s programs in 1997.

Throughout his tenure, the women’s tennis team has continued to rise within the BIG EAST Conference. Last season, he led the team to its fourth consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Marshall continues to look to guide the team back to a .500 record as he did in 2006-07 when UConn finished the year with an 11-11 record and a seventh-place finish at the conference tournament.

Men’s tennis concluded the year last season 5-8, while picking up impressive wins over Boston University (6-1) and Villanova (4-3). The squad finished the 2008-09 season above .500, with an 8-7 record, for the first time since the 2000-01 (13-8) and reached the BIG EAST Tournament as well.

Marshall was elected the president of the BIG EAST Tennis Coaches Association by his peers in 2004. In this position, he represents the interests of all of the BIG EAST tennis programs and facilitates the development of new conference rules and all the details pertaining to the conference championships.

In the 2001 fall season, Marshall’s men’s and women’s tennis teams combined for a 27-14 record, for a .659 winning-percentage, the highest for the women’s program since he took over in the 1997-98 season. The women’s tennis team captured the New England Championships that season. Individually, UConn took championships in five of the six singles brackets and two of the three doubles brackets at the New England Championships.

Prior to that, Marshall led the men’s tennis team to a 20-5 season in 1999-2000. Twenty wins set a single-season record for total wins while the Huskies capped off the season with a seventh place finish at the BIG EAST Championships. That year, UConn earned notable wins against Maryland, Georgetown, Seton Hall and Providence.

Marshall has guided the men’s tennis team to four championships, including in his first year as head coach. In the spring of 1993, he led the Huskies to the New England Championship with men’s tennis capturing the ECAC Championship title that fall (1993). UConn defended each crown the following season, winning the New England Championship and the ECAC titles the following spring and fall of 1994.

Off the court, Marshall has assisted in the research and development of tennis racquets for professional players at Bosworth International in Boca Raton, Fla.

Marshall serves as the Director of Tennis at the Madison Beach Club during the summer months. He and the staff at Madison instruct over 130 juniors and run an extensive adult program that includes USTA league play and lessons.

He attended Keene State College in New Hampshire for a year prior to transferring to the University of Connecticut in the fall of 1986. He was a three-year letterwinner with the men’s tennis program at UConn, graduating in 1989 with a bachelor’s of fine arts degree in music. Marshall was the top singles and doubles player for the Huskies and was voted the team captain for the 1988-89 season. He completed his master’s degree in sport management in 1993.

Marshall resides in his hometown of Glastonbury, Conn., with his wife, Carolyn, and their two children, Carter (15) and Christine (13).

UConn begins the 2011 spring season in West Point, N.Y. for the second year in a row as the Huskies will face Stony Brook and Army once again to kick off their spring campaign. Following their opening dual matches at Army, UConn will head to Puerto Rico for their spring break trip, where the Huskies will com-pete against Bryant and Sacred Heart to get ready for their BIG EAST schedule. The Huskies’ conference schedule begins on March 26 when the Huskies host the Georgetown Hoyas in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies will host Marist College in a mid-week battle on March 31 before welcoming St. John’s to Storrs on April 3 in UConn’s third con-secutive dual match on their home courts. UConn will then travel to in-state rival Fairfield on April 14 before returning home to host Villanova (April 16) and Boston University (April 20). This year’s BIG EAST Tournament will take place once again in South Bend, Ind. and will be hosted by Notre Dame on April 28-30. UConn will rely upon its team leader in Andrew Marcus, who is the Huskies’ lone senior on the roster this spring. Scott Warden will also step up to help guide the team to the BIG EAST Championships. The Huskies welcome freshmen Teddy Margules and Ryan Carr to the mix as both had stellar outings in the fall in their debut season with the Huskies.

Men’s tennis began the 2010 season with multiple solid performances at the Fairfield Doubles Invitational before the Huskies’ first dual match of the year against Hartford, one which UConn dominated with a 6-1 vic-tory. Andrew Marcus led the way winning both his singles and doubles’ matches. The season continued as the Huskies’ hosted the UConn Invitational as Marcus and Scott Warden won the A Doubles Flight, while Warden won the A singles flight, Dave Adams won the B Singles Flight and Teddy Margules won the D Singles Flight. The Huskies continued to dominate dual match competition as they blanked Siena 7-0 in Loudonville, N.Y. Andrew Marcus led the way for the Huskies as he won both his singles match (6-4, 6-4) and his doubles match (8-3) along with teammate Scott Warden. UConn then played in back-to-back invitationals on the road as the Huskies traveled to Bucknell Oct. 1-3 and then to Quinnipiac Oct. 8-10. Marcus and Warden led the way once again with a win in the A Doubles Flight at Quinnipiac. The Huskies’ dual match-up against Sacred Heart was postponed due to inclement weather before the Huskies edged Quinnipiac in dual play by a score of 4-3. With the score tied, freshman Margules won his singles match to clinch the team victory. The fall season concluded at the Connecticut State Championships in New Haven, Conn. In the backdraw singles’ final of the CT State Cham-pionships, Ryan Carr and Warden battled their way into the final where they were set to face each other. They did not play the final match.

THE bIG EAST CONFERENCE

The 2010-11 academic year is the 32nd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the high-est level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2010-11 year marks the conference’s sixth straight with the same 16-member group, the nation’s largest Division I-A conference.

The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The out-standing performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2009-10 year was no different.

Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholar-ship winners. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Award as the nation’s top female student-athlete. She also was named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year for women’s basketball. Moore was the fifth BIG EAST women’s student-athlete to win the Honda-Broderick Award.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut women’s basketball team won its second straight national championship and its seventh overall crown. The Villanova women’s cross country team also won the NCAA title. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team reached the NCAA College Cup for the second straight year. The Syracuse women’s lacrosse squad reached the Final Four.

On the men’s side, West Virginia’s basketball team became the BIG EAST’s 16th team to reach the NCAA Final Four and won the conference’s academic achievement award. The Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA championship game.

Individually, three BIG EAST student-athletes won NCAA titles. Cincinnati’s Josh Schneider won the 50 freestyle in men’s swimming. In track, Louis-ville’s D’Ana McCarty repeated as the NCAA indoor winner in the weight throw. Louisville’s Matt Hughes won the 3,000 steeplechase. Another Car-dinal, Austen Childs, was the national runner-up in men’s tennis singles.

BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Cincinnati won its second straight league championship in 2009 and compiled an undefeated regular season. The Bearcats finished third in the final Bowl Championship Series standings. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record. Rutgers, one of the bowl winners, also was recognized for having the na-tion’s highest NCAA APR rating, which measures academic success.

The BIG EAST has continued to produce student-athletes who are at the forefront of athletic and academic achievement. In 2009-10, 22 BIG EAST players from 10 schools were chosen to their respective ESPN The Maga-zine Academic All-America Teams. Over 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors.

The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 28 national champion-ships in six different sports and 128 student-athletes have won individual national titles.

In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national champion-ships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 12 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 11 NCAA titles.

Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger.

In 2009-10, the BIG EAST added men’s lacrosse to its growing list of sports, which increased its total to 24 sport championships.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College com-pleted the original seven school alliance.

While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics.

Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference.

In 2009-10, the BIG EAST had one significant change. Tranghese stepped down from his position on June 30, 2009. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair and continued to steer the conference on its path of success.

The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and ma-jor public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past seven years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball.

More than 575 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recogni-tion and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.

The University of Connecticut men’s tennis program began in 1932, when coach Marcel Kessel first launched men’s tennis at Connecticut. Through the years, the program has been led by outstanding coach-es, including Dr. John Y. Squires, John Chapman and Ben Kirtland. For one year, UConn men’s tennis was guided by legendary Husky men’s basketball coach Hugh Greer, who in 1953 led Connecticut to its first of three Yankee Conference tennis titles. Connecticut, which also won Yankee Conference titles in 1954 and 1964, became a member of the BIG EAST Conference in 1980. Guid-ing the move to the BIG EAST was veteran head coach John Chapman, who directed the men’s tennis team for 28 years (1956-1984). Current UConn head coach and director of tennis operations, Glenn Marshall, has continued the successful tradition of Husky tennis coaches by leading Connecticut to back-to-back New England Championships (1993 and 1994) and ECAC Championships (1993 and 1994), since taking over for Ben Kirtland in November of 1992. The men’s tennis team has reached the BIG EAST Tournament for the past two seasons and doubled its total wins from the 2006-07 season to the 2007-08 season. The Huskies compete each academic year in both a fall and spring season, with the ambitious spring schedule featuring a spring break trip and several non-conference contests in preparation for the BIG EAST Tournament Championships. This season, Notre Dame will host the conference’s championship competition in South Bend, Ind. During the University’s spring break, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams will travel to Puerto Rico for its spring break competition. In recent years, the UConn men and women have taken annual spring trips to Bermuda, Southern California, Florida, Arizona and South Carolina.

Women’s Tennis BiG eAST Academic All-Stars

Women’s tennis excellence is an annual occurrence at the University of Connecticut, where current head coach Glenn Marshall is in his 13th year in charge of a program with a long and proud winning tradition dating back to the inaugural 1974-75 season. Entering the 2010-11 season, the Huskies’ overall women’s tennis record for 36 years (67 seasons) is at an impressive 387-302-3. Along with annual success in head-to-head matches with various collegiate rivals, the program has also performed well at the New England Championships. The Huskies placed third at the New England Championships in 1992 and 1993, to go along with the consecutive second place finishes in 1990 and 1991. After founding the UConn women’s program in the fall of 1974, former head coach Pat Babcock led the team to winning records each and every fall and spring season. In fact, from 1974-90, a total of 16 years, the Huskies played all 32 consecutive seasons (fall and spring) with winning records. Connecticut is a charter member of the BIG EAST Conference and the Huskies have competed in the BIG EAST Championship 23 out of 28 years. For the past four-consecutive seasons, women’s ten-nis has competed at the BIG EAST Championships. The 1994-95 season marked the first time in which the men’s and women’s championship were held together during the spring season. The 2011 BIG EAST Championship will be hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. as it was in 2010.
