WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY VOLLEYbALL

Willamette University is proud to provide opportunities for student-athletes to attain great accomplishments in athletics and in the classroom. Bearcat athletes excel on their respective teams throughout the year. Several teams have attained postseason success during recent seasons, continuing a history of excellence in Willamette Athletics. These teams and athletes also shine in the classroom. From Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections to several Fulbright, Kemper and NCAA Postgraduate scholarship winners, WU athletes have been honored for theiracademic achievements. It is this combination, along with a strong commitment to community service and Willamette’s motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” that makes BearcatAthletics great.

PAGE 72010 REVIEW AND 2011 PREVIEW

The Bearcats have a young team again this season, with no seniors and a total of four freshmen on a squad of 15 players. Although the team is young, there are still high expectations for 2011.

Willamette features four juniors who have significant experience. In addition, the seven sophores received lots of playing time last year.

Leading the attack will be a solid group of hitters led by juniors Madisyn Leenstra, Nicole Mertens and Danica Reed. Three sophomores — Carly Hargrave, Kirsten Brehmer and Shannon Waltz — can earn big hit totals. As a result, a strength of the team is that any of the hitters can be the leader on any given night.

Taylor Ottomano, who missed much of last year due to injury, and Sydney Smith, who also was injured, will provide additional help at the hitting positions.

Setter Emily Compton is in her second season as a Bearcat. Last fall, she earned 8.46 assists per set.

Two players — Kathy Lee Glenn and Lizzy Balding — will share duties at the libero position and as defensive specialists. The two combined for 441 digs last year.

The freshmen are setter Bailey Kray, plus middle hitter Kathrin Miracle, opposite Elisa Ahern and outside hitter Taylor Gee.

Willamette’s schedule includes a pair of tournaments in California. The Bearcats will play at the Pomona Invitational on Sept. 2-3 in Claremont, and will take part in the California Lutheran Tournament on Sept. 9-10 in Thousand Oaks.

The Northwest Conference schedule gets underway on Sept. 14 against archrival Linfield College. It is expected to be a very competitive conference race that probably won’t be decided until the final weekend of games on Nov. 4-5.

WHERE WE’RE GOINGWillamette University fielded a young volleyball team in 2010, with just one senior, two juniors, 10 sophomores and six freshmen. The Bearcats ended the season at 9-16, 5-11 in the NWC. Six losses were in five sets, including a 3-2 loss against traditional power University of Puget Sound.

The team’s only senior, outside hitter Molly Blankenship, led the Bearcats with 309 kills for an average of 3.40 kills per set. She also earned 45 total blocks and 178 digs. She was second on the team with 18 service aces.

Other top attackers for the Bearcats were sophomore Madisyn Leenstra and freshmen Carly Hargrave and Shannon Waltz. Hargrave registered 166 kills (1.93 avg.) and earned a .244 hitting percentage. Leenstra achieved 125 kills (174 avg.). Waltz made 103 kills and hit .266.

Top defense players for the Bercats were freshman Lizzy Balding and sophomore Kathy Lee Glenn. Balding led the team with 232 digs (4.07 avg.). Glenn tacked on 209 digs (4.10 avg.).

Hargrave led the team with 84 total blocks. She had 18 block solos to go with 66 block assists.

Blankenship was selected First Team All-NWC. Hargrave earned Honorable Mention All-NWC recognition.

Willamette professors contribute a wide range of expertise to create a dynamic

and collaborative learning environment for their students. They engage in scholarly research and publication, but they are also fundamentally committed to teaching and serving as mentors and advisors.

Since 1990, ten Willamette faculty members have been named Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. They have been honored among the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country for excelling in teaching and positively influencing the lives and careers of their students.

With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions.

The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too.

Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette.

Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes.

Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.

SALEM, OREGON

Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block.

Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know.

When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves.

For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports.

Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth.

Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.

Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.

The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.

Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
